  • The chemistry major can be very fulfilling but people also want to know if it will be worth it as a career goal! Today I look at the American Chemical Society survey on the salaries of chemists in the United States to give you guys an idea of being a chemistry major and then a chemist or chemical engineer is worth it to you!

One thing I would note is that, all though the median vs BS/MS is similar. The median years of experience between the two probably differ greatly too. I.e. I would agree that the BS is probably more heavily skewed towards old folks, with much more experience.

Hi Zahl, can't thank you enough for creating such a great content. I am switching my major to chemistry, do you recommend taking analytical chemistry 1, organic chemistry 2 and inorganic chemistry 1 in one semester since I have completed the core requirements, so I don't have many options left.

Hi Zahl, could you maybe provide some info on Environmental Chemistry? How well paid is a PhD level and what are the career scopes? It sounds perfect for me but worried if I’ll be able to live well off of it.

Im not afraid of learning programming i think it's a good idea for chemists and especially engineers but if my job was just doing programming all day i am pretty sure i would want to unalive myself very quickly or at least trash a bunch of keyboards or send a brick through the monitor
addendum: pure sciences at large universities are moving away from masters degrees if you want to stay in academia they will just go directly for the phd track. this differs markedly from engineers which have the opposite viewpoint. most graduate level engineers that want to go to industry get the 'mEng' degree which trades research for practicums and interships
second addendum: i attended at least one scholarly talk where the entire point was *if you want to get into industry you REALLY need the phd to be hire-able*

Depending on where you are it would differ. The US has the ADA which prohibits discrimination against employees with disabilities and usually there are accommodations that can be made!
