Just to clarify since a lot of people in the comments are asking-- Rutgers University was my safety and I got into a great program at the engineering school there. It's been a great experience so far and I have no regrets!

Is amazing how strong you are, I’ve seen videos of people crumbling apart when they don’t get into the unis they want. If universities took in count balls you’d definitely be in.
I ended up attending a school that I had NEVER visited. I don’t even know why I ended up applying in the first place. I liked the location? It had an appealing major? And in the end I am SO happy with my decision. I fell in LOVE the moment I actually reached campus. This comes from that over achieving high schooler who didn’t end up where they expected. I’ll echo Aelric you’ll be ok!! Accept the unexpected.

As someone who didn't get into their dream school, left my back up school after 8 months, and finally took admission in a university faaaaar away from my home, I feel your pain.
I don't know why this video was recommended to me since I'm graduating college this year... but I ended up watching the whole thing and I absolutely loved how positive you stayed! I didn't get into my dream schools either and ended up going one of my safeties, but I don't have any regrets- I fell in love with the city, the people and I decided to stay for grad school.

I got into my dream middle/highschool and it had a 20% acceptance rate, but now it’s time for college so I’m like nervous. This reminded me that we’re all still human and if we get declined it’s okay 👌
You don’t even need to get into MIT to get access to their education sys. They have a literal site with videos of all their lectures on literally any major/ subject
I got rejected by both my dream schools too... guess i'm taking a gap year :) i'll try again next semester after i take some exams that should make my application look better

I got waitlisted for Chicago, rejected from NYU and, rejected from Cornell. The waitlist one hurt the most tbh. Ended up just staying local and went to med school instead of Economics. Currently a doctor in a worldwide pandemic so probably not a very good decision on my part.

I was waitlisted from the schools I wanted to attend. Now, four years later, I'm graduating with a 3.8 at Fordham University. I didn't let the application system defeat me, I attended a low-tier school and transferred.

Very brave of you to share your experience with the world. It is an insight more in tune with the real world concerning ivy admissions -since they reject an obscene amount of applicants more than they admit, twice a year (99.4% of students don’t attend ivies). For what’s worth, Ivies aren’t but little glorified pain factories run like cut-throat corporations. And they even resist implementing the latest research on education into their curriculums in the name of tradition. I should know, after giving it a shot, just as you did (because there’s only one way to find out, right?) I got accepted to Columbia and Penn. I did well in the former one but, believe me, all I did was miss my old school.
I literally cried when I got rejected from my dream school... the pain is real! However, I am now at my "safety" school and love it. I've had so many great opportunities and have several friends from high school who go to school with me now :)

How do they select people? Where I'm from some university are accessible to everyone, it depends on the subject of your studies, for example studying literature or law is accessible to everyone, but other subjects you have to take a test to go in. I think it's pretty fair.

I'm sooo grateful that it isn't neccesary to "apply" for colleges in Denmark. We can basically go wherever we want to go, if only our mid grade is at least D...

i was rejected by 9 out of the 10 colleges i applied to -- also all ivy leagues and selective liberal arts colleges! the one i DID get into and ended up enrolling at was an afterthought, somewhere i hadn't really thought about, but i'm here now and i can't imagine myself anywhere else. it's sort of like dating, there's a reason you're being rejected and it's as much about them not being a good fit for you as it is about you not being a good fit for them haha. enjoy rutgers!!! xx
Just a random comment passing by... I got rejected from my dream school 2 years ago. It sucked and I ended up going to a school I did not want to go but... I applied as a transfer and officially got into my dream school this semester. So just so everyone knows freshmen applications are not the end of it.

I got rejected from every college except my 2 safety schools, I feel your pain brother.
Our reactions were pretty similar which was nice.
Before and afterwards, I struggle with feeling disillusioned whenever there's digital tours/orientation/etc for colleges. I don't know why, maybe I feel cheated, maybe I feel disconnected, maybe I feel like it's a waste of time, maybe I feel guilty for not feeling good which makes me feel worse. I don't know. I've never once toured a college. That was supposed to happen. I feel like my life has been altered significantly by covid. I won't go on about it more because I'm sure you know how I feel.

Whats it like? I never got officially rejected because I only applied to 3 schools and I only got "rejected" from UW Madison (my last choice) because my application was incomplete.

Just remember not getting into a certain school doesn't mean life is over. At the end you just get a piece of paper with a different name on it. You can be a very successful person as long as you are happy and proud of what you achieved

Man I saw the emotion come out right as you cut the clip. It’s easy to act stoic when we first get bad news, but these college admission decisions really make people feel like they genuinely aren’t GOOD enough.
That's one of the reasons why I'm going to a community college. I don't have a lot of money so I'd rather save my money. Also it's hard for people to get accepted into the school of their choice as a first year student unless you have a 4.0+ GPA, involved in 5+ clubs, 100+ hours of community service and 1200 SAT score. LMAO

It can be a little heart wrenching seeing college decision reaction videos as the majority of the students featured in them win outstanding awards, take the most difficult courses, and simply are well-rounded in all the ways one could be. Truthfully, one can’t feel jealous, rather one could only only wonder why becoming said “ideal” student was so difficult to begin with. Dang it...life can really hurt, however, this is only the beginning so it’s important to keep going :,D! Most of all it’s crucial to remember that these decisions don’t define your worth (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise), so keep working hard, you got this :D!

Medical student advice: Even more important than the name of your school... is what you do in the 4 years you're there. Also, go to the school that gives you the most bang for your buck. Do you really need a 200k degree from Harvard if the career you want doesnt make at least 200k per year.....? No.... you really don't. I know its exciting to leave home and go to expensive schools and have your own apartment but PLEASE be financially conscious.

Edit: so some people didn’t get my point. It’s way harder for poor people to make it into an Ivy League school, compared to a rich person who can just pay the tuition. It’s still possible but your school probably doesn’t give you the Pre Harvard material, like how a lot of Fancy Private schools do. And it’s so unfair for poor people... so unfair.
That's absolutely not true. Many low-income students not only get accepted, but also get generous scholarships at these top schools.

@@SamuelSamuelSamuel1 this is also not true. There are scholarships that are based on financial need and those that are based on merit. Those based on financial need usually also have some cutoffs for GPA and standardized exam scores, but they're not impossibly high, and simply there to incentivize them to actually try at school, to ensure that they're giving the scholarship to someone who really wants go to school, and not just on someone wanting to take advantage of the money. FAFSA is also a great option for low income students. I think maybe you should talk to a guidance counselor about these options because it sounds like you havent really heard about how much help there is!
Hey, you should check out Questbridge, a nonprofit organization that gives low income, high achieving students an opportunity to receive full ride scholarships from top schools. It's possible to go to a top school even as a FGLI.
