I did lose head hair with low / no carb and lost 50#'s, but it came back by the end of twelve months. The hair not the weight (weight loss is going on four years now). Seems to have gotten a bit darker than it was previously.
The only bad part of keto is buying new clothing, unless you hoard your old smaller clothes.

I switched to a ketogenic / IF lifestyle about 8 months ago and I've lost 65 pounds. At some point I did experience hair loss. I have very long dark hair, and while it was never coming out in clumps, it was impossible not to notice it around the shower drain. I accepted it, moved on, and forgot about it. (Don't sweat the small stuff!)
It wasn't until watching this video that it occurred to me that I'm no longer seeing hair around the shower drain. 👍👍

I was keto most of my adult life due to diabetes but was still very overweight. When I went ketovore/carnivore my weight loss started rather rapidly. I lost 70lbs in the first year! Now my weight loss is much slower and any hair I lost in the first year has regrown & then some. Your hair will regrow. Now I'm down 85lbs, full head of hair and feel so much better. Don't let TEMPORARY hair loss scare you away.

I lost 20 lbs slowly doing low carb then transitioned somewhat naturally into keto and dropped another 20 lbs in about 6 weeks. Dramatic hair thinning at that point, at least 50% reduction and it took a year to come back. Appreciate this so much, I assumed I was lacking nutrients during my quick fat loss phase.

I’ve lost 140 lbs over the last year on keto /carnivore, and yes my hair did thin a bit in the beginning. But it has come back nicely and is as thick as it was when I was in my 20’s.

My partner is not doing keto, buth he combines a low carb real food approach with intermittent fasting. He has had male baldness since puberty. We noticed that when he adds in one 24h fast per week, that his hair grows back. And he's so proud of that.

Well, is this ever timely personally. I have been eating Keto 3 months now and just noticed in the last couple weeks that my hair is thinning. Since I have hyperthyroidism/Graves history that is currently in remission, I was becoming concerned that my thyroid was wonky. I have none of the other hyper symptoms I had when things were really bad, but after listening to this video I am entirely reassured and not panicked. My 6 month thyroid bloodwork is approaching anyhow but I surely appreciate being able to look at the long game after understanding better what’s going on. Probably one of the more impactful videos I have seen of yours. Thanks Doc for what you are doing here, keep up the great work!

    Great video Dr. Cywes!
Most point you're talking about were accurate in my case except... I've dropped carbs the cold turkey way. It wasn't painful for me no keto flu etc. The other thing - I went NUTS! Totally NUTS! And that helped me a lot - macadamia and brazil. I Went 80-95% animal products for almost 3 months. Then some salats were introduced.
I haven't lost any hair (lucky me) and I have all my hair 3 years later. They are thicker, stronger and shiny.
I try to eat 2-3 macadamia and brazil nuts on everyday basis.
You're doing great job to people in need, Stay safe mate!

Well when my husband and I first went on Keto, we cut out the carbs and yes have both lost weight and had hair loss which made me worry about it me from 62 kg to 50 kg. I would be more comfortable being an extra 5 kg more but feel much healthier for it. I am fasting for about 14 to 15 hrs and have a good breakfast of bacon and eggs plus Haloume cheese, half avocado and 2 slices of tomato but vary it and might have an omelet or scrambled eggs etc. The hair thinning which I did lose from the crown of my head is coming back but slowly as I have Hashomotos disease also so the reason going Keto was to treat this disease. Was diagnosed when I was 53 yrs old had to be wheat free and dairy free but back then was hard to find food that I could eat etc just found it difficult to stick to but also was prescribed natural troches for menopause symptoms which I was on for 10 yrs. Now I will be 70 this year so the more I find out about the foods can eat etc the more interested in keeping well and enjoy my food and telling others about it. Not all want to do this but thats up to them to ask and can help others and direct them to watch the videos to get the advice they need.

    Hey doc!
I actually heard that the actual opening of the follicle can expand to allow thicker hair through as the scalp becomes healthier causing unhealthy thin hair to “fall out in clumps”
I noticed when I switched my diet I had hair loss but it grew in a lot thicker and in places I once had very fine hair.

I've not experienced any hair thinning on LCHF but my weight loss isn't rapid after the first two weeks of water weight. Having some temporary hair thinning while eating LCHF seems acceptable to me given the health benefits I've noticed in the past few months.
My wife is vegan and she goes through hair thinning phases at times but it always grows back. What I've noticed is when she drops the vegan junk food and sticks to mainly whole foods is when her hair thinning starts but it doesn't last long. I just have to be mindful of our plumbing during those times :D

I started Keto in summer 2020, and at that time my 95 year old mother also had a stroke, she survived but had terrible brain damage. The stress of both dealing with her new living requirements, especially during covid lock-down, and losing significant weight (66 pounds/30 kg) resulted in losing a lot of hair. A lot of it has grown back, but I still feel like it hasn't returned to its previous thickness. Perhaps, the on-going stress of planning her funeral, and other estate business over the 2 following years has kept the stress levels higher than normal, and I will get more hair.

Due to unknown very low D vitamin I had multiple virus infections over the whole year, starting with covid that all caused hair loss (that was all discovered afterwards).
My dermatogist prescribed mynoxidil and it helped a lot. Of course that new hair is shorter and it takes time to grow.
I started keto half a year prior to all that and I was glad to already be fat adapted when all of that hit.
Now several years later my eyelashes and brows are thicker than ever, I attributed that to minoxidil but I'm not taking it anymore for a long time. I only spotted couple of gray brows. F57. Btw I never gave up dark chocolate.

I lost nearly half of my hair early last year after surviving COVID (caught it long before I was eligible for a vaccine) and endured more stress and grief than I thought was possible for a person to endure. I was about a week away from going G.I. Jane, but the growth cycle finally kicked in. This year, I'm trying to clean up my life style (as little sugar and starch as possible and no processed food) and I had to undergo a total hysterectomy because of uterine cancer. I was lucky because I got to skip chemotherapy and only had to endure a handful of sessions of brachytherapy. I have lost a good bit of weight and I'm back to losing hair at an alarming rate (thanks in part, too, to a total loss of estrogen). Your insights give me hope that it might grow back in time.

Keto since 2018 w/o any probs. Keto through CA. Hair came back darker but same texture/thickness. After a year on aromatase inhibitor hair is falling out, 2 bald patches and hair is texture of cheap doll hair. Is it meds, is it keto? I wish it would all fall out entirely again and the maintenance free.

Anyone here losing/lost 200/300 hairs daily from keto? 4 months in and this is traumatic! 😢
I know it takes months to re-thicken but when does the shedding stop?
Also, I went keto/carnivore to fix Seborrheic Dermatitis, not make it worse or lose weight as I'm athletic, and believe me, it's worse than it's ever been.
    Anyone the same?
Is Seborrheic Dermatitis not appropriate for a high fat diet?
Btw, seeing as I have you 😂. I had a few beers this weekend after months and quite literally felt morbid depression the next day. Never experienced anything like that before. Have I just destroyed the biome/enzyme capable of handling this? This is equally traumatic for an Irish man 😂

Any thoughts on hair loss in cycles... I'm keto...BUT also have lupus? Just keep a balanced keto diet and hope for the best more or less?

    • @WideAwakeHuman
      @WideAwakeHuman 2 года назад

personally I would do keto consistently until your lupus is really controlled (if it gets there) and then add in fruits every day when their in season - i believe diet should cycle with the seasons as it would have before refrigeration. Meat/fat all year long - fruit for a few months in the summer/fall, berries at the same time... then back to keto.

Biotin is amazing BECAUSE it works! When I can take a supplement and see for myself the direct result of taking it, I’ll take it. It’s inexpensive and no one is pushing plain Biotin so no wallet biopsies there. I have very very slow growing hair. I’ve been taking biotin for quite some time and I get compliments now on how long it’s getting. One lady even asked if I had extensions! That’s enough hard proof for me.
