Scotty when I was 16 years old Michelin came out with a new tire. They claimed it was so long lasting , you didn't even need to put a mileage warranty on it. So they put a 4-year warranty instead.
I was 16 years old and they had just sold me a set of tires, they said when these ones wear out son come on back for more.. for free, in the next 4 years.
Scotty I had a Camaro, I was out there having a blast.
That tire shop put four sets of tires on my car, in 4 years for one original purchase price.

While I agree with you, I've run into tire places that will not install tires that aren't rated above the top speed of the vehicle. Once tried to get ones rated 112 for the 2000 Accord my wife used to have and they wouldn't do it. I even dared them to name one place in the US where 112 wouldn't already be considered "reckless driving".

For me it's not about speed ratings; it's about handling, grip and hydroplane resistance. I just put Micheline Pilot 4S All seasons on my Mazda. They are rated at some ridiculously high speed, my Mazda would never reach that speed, but I love the way they handle, and if they save one crash because of their ability to stick to the road and not hydroplane when I make an error in judgement, the extra cost is worth it. Why the all-seasons you might ask, well this way they will last long enough for me to wear them out before the rot, but won't cost me an arm and a leg replacing them as often as the summer-only Pilots.

my all season 168 mph rated nitto’s have been great on my 14’ taurus went with a 245/55/19 , great looking tire they like to turn grey fast, but tread wear is minimal after 40k miles of driving . They were about 1200. Very tough, kinda rough . great traction in winter, not as much in summer besides at high speeds they do awesome; they are kind of heavy.

I have 10,000 miles on them already and I've noticed a difference in ride quality, and braking compared to the original Bridgestone's that came with the truck. Tires that come on a brand new car usually are sub standard traction and last 40k to 50k tops if you rotate when you should every 5k at least and check the air once a month. Most folks neglect rotating and checking air, you usually need more than the door recommends for tire pressure for max life and even wear. The front tires go bald on the shoulders, the outsides, and the rear tires go bald in the center. You never rotate you have steel cables showing and leaking air out of the front tires after 20k to 25k miles, if it's a little light car, the back tires will look nearly brand spanking new. If it is front wheel drive. I know it all, seen it all, done lots of tinkering, you'd be surprised what 2 psi difference can make so your tires wear more evenly. I had an 86 Honda Crx, very light 2600 pounds empty. I could grab the rear fenders and lift the tires 2 inches off the ground, I weigh 160 pounds. Front wheel drive, 195 55 r15 WR rated toyo F4's, wore perfectly even with 36 psi in the front tires and 32 psi in the rears. All the power is being put down by the fronts and thats where most of the weight is. Allwheel drive never mix tire psi, rotate more often and keep perfectly even psi in all four tires. Rotate and balance every 3500 miles. Allwheel drive cars are all tire Killers. Then, when they are too different in tread depth, you damage the differentials and transmission. Tires are neglected and you blow a differential or transmission under warranty, they check your tires first, more than 3% tread depth difference from front to rear or left to right, like if you blew one tire and only got one new tire, warranty voided. You are supposed to shave that new tire to match your other tires or get 4 new tires. Oh so much to learn, that so many folks neglect to learn about their Subaru. It isn't Subarus problems, it's simple physics, you have to take extra care of all wheel drive vehicles or you will pay extra money when they go boom. Volvos too. Seeing it so many times it's sad everytime nice people don't have the money, kids cars that parents gave them and they just didn't learn how to care for the car. I'm not calling anybody bad I'm just begging save money read the owner's manual, take the cheap constant care of the car and you won't be left stranded and with a huge bill that costs more than the cars value, all the best take care. P.S. I've seen well over 70 Subaru's totaled because parents took good care of the car, gave it to their kids, kids didn't do basic maintenance like rotating the tires. They all blew a transmission and before 130 thousand miles. They show up with a flat tire and it barely shifts, they have 2 or more different tread patterns and tread depths on the tires, meaning they blew tires out, only replaced one, drove on a flat until the tire was toast rather than pulling over and putting the spare on. Oh fhe car won't shoft gear's, you need a new set of four tires and a $4800 transmission and that's just parts, not labor, and you have no idea how bad you chewed up the three differentials. Complicated rigs that perform very well need way more simple and constant love man. Just the way it is.

I spent 10 years recovering road accidents for a living. Common theme in many accidents is cheap tyres. Cheap tyres tend to break traction suddenly, leading to unpredictable handling. A good quality tyre will loose grip much more slowly, giving you time to respond in a more controlled manner

For anyone you care about, only put Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Yokohama, Continental, on there and forget about it. @@jasonb9085 Simply looking at the VIN tells you the country of origin. And the country of origin only matters to the assembly quality, and does not cite the problem of poor designs of German vehicles. On my Regensburg assembled E90, all gaskets are made by rubber which fails prematurely, leading to oil leak, whereas Honda vehicle made in US / Canada uses polytetrafluoroethylene with metal insertions very often. The engine oil / coolant is designed to operated at 105 degrees (85 for most Asian vehicle), which accelerated the wear on gaskets and water pipes even more, and the only purpose for such high engine temperature is to achieve greater efficiency, but will cost you way more in repairs than the fuel saved. Water hoses are connected using plastic quick connecting joint, the Germans can cut corners on assembly line but these joints lack of the durability of traditional metal clips, which are still widely used in Asian / US vehicles.
However, I would say the continental tires are just fine… The worst German company is Bosch, avoid their parts at all cost because they fail prematurely too often

The crossclimate is designed to operate in both Cold and normal weather, and if you don’t drive below zero then for sure it’s a bad choice. For Canadians a set of all weather tire saves condo owners saves the owner at least $200 (tire swap + storage fee) a year and the overhead cost of another set of rims, this is where all weather tire shines.
But you really should ditch those tires more than 10 years old even they looks good. If you don’t drive that much, my suggestion is to upgrade to a higher performance category, the cost per tire is usually the same but you get shorter stopping distance, at the cost of lower tread life.

got killed in a collision with a palm tree because her car didn't handle correctly.

Sidewall strength usually correlates well with upper speed-rated tires, so if you value good steering response at normal speeds, that's a good thing. I really never recommend going BELOW the speed rating the car came with. It's not much to do about top speed, more to do with the handling envelope the car was designed for. IMO.

  • @triplevxd

The speed rating is tested in straight line laboratory conditions. It has little relevance to real world conditions in which most people would never drive consistantly at those speeds. The more important factor to consider however is that higher speed rated tyres are made using softer compounds meaning that they will have improved handling, grip and stopping power.

Bad advice, especially in the southern USA states during summer heat. If Your passenger car came with T speed rated tires then get at least T speed rated tires as replacement tires. , BUT if available then get H-speed rated tires for the additional heat absorption capabilities . Running 80MPH on the lower T speed rated tires isn't the wisest choice. You're more prone to tread separation and degraded steering qualities . S speed rated passenger car tires are mostly dedicated winter/snow tires that will degrade significantly when operated at interstate highway speeds in typical USA southern states summer heat. Pay attention to the UTQG RATING for the passenger car tire. Ideally you are seeking something like 400+ AA A. 400 or more treadwear rating, AA traction rating, and an A temperature rating.
For lots of H speed rated tires you are more likely to find: 400+ A A: A greater than 400 treadwear rating, A traction rating of A, and a temperature rating of A .
Lots of high quality H rated tires will have an A traction rating with a B temperature rating.
Michelin Defender T&H tires for example are relatively high quality tires that oddly often come with an A traction rating and a B temperature rating.

I doubt the tires on that Lexus are "R" rated. most tires sold in the US have a minimum speed rating of S, or 112. T, H and V are common as well with 118, 130 and 150mph if I remember correctly. R is probably printed on his tire as 215/60 R17, just to mean radial.

I work at a Discount Tire and my best advice for anyone balling in a budget, literally buy anything other than the cheapest tire and you'll be at least halfway okay. If money's not a problem go Michelin, best bang for your buck is Yokohama, worst tire is definitely Sentry and anything cheaper or a similar price. Worst bang for your buck is definitely Pirelli. Pirellis are way overpriced and always go out in the weirdest and premature ways.

For anyone who wants a really good yet 'average' priced tire, go get Michelin 'Defender' tires, I've tried other more expensive ones and the Defenders are just as good and just as long-lasting. Avoid the Chinese crap at Walmart (but 'do' get the Defenders at Walmart if you can find them there.) For people who live in areas that get snow in the winter, but the Nokian WRG4 / WR G4 'All-weather' tires = They are snow tires that you can keep on in the summer.

I sell tires for a living of all brands. In new england as well. Chinese based brands suck, but michelin sells there tires for so much, i know exactly what my company pays for every model and size of michelin as a distributer and its literally crazy bro. I live in a snowy area and I would take a dedicated winter tire over an all season tire every time. The winter tire is going to be made of a different rubber that performs better in the cold, there's just no comparison - no way an all season tire can be as good as a winter/snow tire.

I somewhat disagree. I know a friend who lost her nice FWD Lincoln Continental sedan because she fitted it with not so great tires. She was trying to brake and swerve around a vehicle that had darted out of a parking lot into her lane. The ABS did its thing, but the tires were not up to the needs for a combined swerve and brake situation like that. Her car lost most of its front end in the collision.

There is an amazing amount of people that drive on nearly worn out tires, or even weather-cracked tires. Even in the snow-belt they try to get one more winter out of a set if at all possible to save money. In my opinion having a fairly new set of tires with good tread depth is more important than the brand, whether you buy a new set of premium big brand tires or budget priced Chinese, you are safer than old worn out ones. I have used or installed most brands, defects are not necessarily in the cheaper brands, in fact I haven’t really seen problems with the cheaper ones at all. Of course the supporting made in North America is another issue.

They also have date codes on them. Used tires sometimes can be budget friendly. Also tire size has a bearing on their price as well. The bigger the tire the more rubber and materials the more cost. Pro tip for those of us that winter in the north. Buy an extra set of rims from a junkyard and mount snow tires on them then just swap them out when the seasons change...

I bought aluminum OEM rims off of Craigslist with Falken all-seasons (with lots of tread left) for my 2011 Honda Fit Sport for $200, which I'll put on in the Spring. I also bought used Bridgestone Blizzaks (used by the previous owner only 6 weeks last winter due to the lockdowns) for $100. All I need to do is go to the tire shop and swap out my current balding all-seasons and put the winter tires on. Now, I have two sets of tires with factory rims for less than $400.

As someone who worked the majority of my life in the tire industry I can tell you with certainty that when you change the speed rating it changes not only the tire life but handling and performance of your vehicle, in some instances it won’t change your opinion but it can and that is something to think about.
