That was his downfall. He went and said Eurovision was the gay olympics, he thought if he was the gayest he could he would win. But it’s not working that way

2:12:30 Being in the arena I can inform you that the answer is lamer and much more awesome at the same time. There were two stage crew that were constantly going to the plate, counter balancing it or leveling it for the spins, then quickly leaving the stage to make wide shots possible. But for ALL of the shots they were completely framed out of the broadcast feed. Kudos to the Swiss and SVT's choregraphy and visual directions, that was broadcast masterclass
I don't know if anyone else commented it, but Ievan Polkka was not originally a Hatsune Miku song. A Hatsune Miku cover of it went viral, but the original song was a " Traditional Finnish polka" song from 1928.
I think it's hilarious how the EBU tried their best to limit flags like Nemo bringing in their nonbinary flag and countless people getting rejected with EU flags (despite the fact the dutch staging had a few of them) but the funniest part is when Petra was asking a fan to name any Eurovision song and that she'll sing it, there's just a huge costa rican flag right behind her. Costa rica, infamously known for being in Europe
1:12:48 At Eurovision, Australia counts as Nordic bloc. Remember that they were invited in the first place due to passionately following the contest for decades. And what music has long prominence in Eurovision? Nordic music. Australian market happily eats up Skandi hits, resulting in a similar music style emerging there over time and eventually even more cultural exchange. For example, we've seen a half Australian Mileo competing in Norwegian NF this year.
I can’t believe I’ve watched the whole thing. I couldn’t agree more with the point about watching Eurovision precisely because it’s political. Thank you for making this

Great video, but I find that your segment on Israel is not entirely correct. 1. While I agree that "October Rain" should have definitely been rejected for political lyrics, "Hurricane" is not an inherently political song. The melody isn't political and neither are the lyrics. To determine whether lyrics are political, I use the Switzerland thought experiment - if Switzerland sent "Hurricane", would people immediately condemn the song for referencing Oct 7th? No. Showing the song to non-Eurofans who had no idea that this song was representing Israel, none of them could tell that it was referencing Oct 7th. The closest response I got was that "it was about grief and loss", but most responses were "it's a break-up song", "it's about a divorce". 2. While the Ministry of Public Affairs should have definitely not made Eden record videos begging for votes, it should be mentioned that nothing in the rules specifically forbids countries from doing this. In 2021, Malta did something similar. 3. 2:20:57 This is the part that is straight-up wrong. VRT DID show Israel's performance in its entirety in both the semi final and the final, as failing to broadcast or even censoring any participating country's performance would result in an immediate disqualification, loss of broadcasting rights or at the very least an extremely hefty fine (See China 2018 Semifinal 1 and Lebanon 2005). The message that was shown was only shown before the start of the show. 4. While I agree that some of the comments made by the Israeli commentators were bordering on extremely insensitive, the comments against Bambie Thug that many seem to have an issue with were mistranslated. The part about Cats Square? It was a reference to the place being a place that was synonymous with goth culture in the 90s, not a reference to a massacre. "Prepare your curses?" It was a mistranslation. A more accurate translation would be "prepare for the witch's curses" (referencing the fact that Bambie Thug quite openly calls themselves a witch). "There was some controversy surrounding Bambie's participation." Was that not true? The Australian commentators themselves said that "there is some dissent regarding the participation of Israel", and yet no one thought that that was insensitive. 5. The reason behind the apparent censoring of Palestinian symbols in Eurovision were because if you think about it, nothing about it was because the singer was genuinely fascinated with Palestinian culture and wanted to showcase it in their performance. We know this because Eric Saade, in his rehearsals, did not perform with a keffiyeh and Iolanda had white nails in her semi final performance. Wearing a keffiyeh or having your nails painted in the patterns of a keffiyeh are not inherently political, but here it IS a political statement. Why wear one now? Why paint your nails like that now? Note: I am not for censoring anything, but this is the actual reason behind the decision made by the EBU. 6. I do not believe that anti-booing technology was used during the entirety of the show. Call me delusional, but I have reasons for believing this. The footage shown in your video of Eden being booed was not of the grand final, it was of the jury final. Eden herself had said that "on some days the booing was worse than other days", and this is verifiably true. People in the audience during the live grand final have said that there was more applause than booing for Israel. In the live broadcast, you could hear some booing that would have been silenced by anti-booing technology. Even if anti-booing technology was used, it was clearly not used during the voting segment, which should be the case, because audible booing could influence how the televote votes. 7. Saying that Eden condones all of Israel's rule violations during the contest because she represents Israel seems a bit weird. She's there to sing, not to comment on whatever her delegation did. Note: I do not support infantilising her either. 8. I completely agree that some things that members of the Israeli delegation did were out of line, but Eden did, to my knowledge, nothing rule-breaking during the week. Disqualifying Eden for the actions of some of her delegation members is, in my opinion, extremely unfair. Plus, her hairstylist was ejected from the venue during the week. You made some great points, but I wanted to add some extra context.
The reason why Estonia and Ukraine gave point to eachother this year may be because Estonia is one of the largest supporters of Ukraine in the war, and there are quite a lot of Ukrainian refugees in Estonia.
I was wondering all this time why everyone liked France's song so much more than me. And I think you're completely right - I understand the lyrics, so it sounded like such a basic love song!!! Aaaaaaahhhh it all makes sense now!!!
Also, about Azerbaijan and Fahree's relationship with the state - he DID collab with Ilkin again to make a song called Azerbaijan where they just repeat the country's name over and over while holding a flag. So... he might be a little sus...
Love ur content im also Flemish im 20 years and love eurovision. in the future i will make also a lot of those video's those video's really inspire me :)
On your question why Moldova gave so much to Azerbaijan: Apart from them having shared Soviet history, Moldova has a significant Turkic Gaugaz minority, which might have really liked the traditional Turkic style of the Azeri song
While that is true, the Gagauz minority is actually primarily speaking Russian. In Romania Moldova and some other Balkan countries, oriental sounds can be heard in local music as well, it is just more familiar here than it other parts in Europe.
Finland - im afraid youre coping. The egg is based off Finnish mythology as confessed by Teemu himself. That said given Teemu's life philosophy im sure he is pro trans
1:16:16 this has actually happened quite a few times. while some have made it to the left side, getting close has happened. I’m not exactly sure if you’re only referring to getting close, but just in case ima list some cases where they got past because I can. from top of my memory: 2005, Latvia qualified in 10th place above Poland. And shot up to 5th in the grand final. no clue why, i think the song is pretty bad. 2006: North Macedonia qualified in 10th once again right above Poland. NM then went on to tie for 12th. Since there was 24 entries, and the second 12th placer Croatia did receive more 10’s than NM, NM barely didn’t make it to the left side. 2006 was lacking in general and this song was fine so i see how it got up there. 2007: Natalia Barbu actually came 10th in both Semi Final and Grand final. Beating out Portugal in the semi by 3 points, and then beating Bosnia for the 10th place spot by once again 3 points. Songs a banger though 2011: Moldova once again, scraped in and then placed 12th in the grand final. 2015: Azerbaijan sent a song about wolves and maybe furries liked it and that’s why it got 12th? 2019: I do not know why Denmark did so well in the GF. I do not like that song, and probably shouldn’t have been 12th. 2023: Alika being a goddess and using her awesome vocals to sway the juries and get Estonia 8th in the grand final.
So as someone who has watched every edition of Eurovision (except for the two we only have audio for), 2024 is one of the best years music wise, and it's a shame that the participation of that one country over-shadowed so much of that.
1:16:25 Yes actually jumps like these aren't too common, but they have happened before, infact you may have (kind of) discussed one earlier in video. Back in 2007, Natalia Barbu was 10th in the semi final and 10th in the final, meanwhile a more mind-boggling example is Latvia in 2005. In the 2005 semi final Latvia placed 10th. In the grand final, Latvia placed 5th. Most of these jumps are from the 2000s to be completely fair but a more recent example is Serbia in 2015, who placed 9th in their semi final by 1 point and then placed 10th in the final.
As an american, this video is the first time ive cared about eurovision since Lordi from Finland won in 2006. Thanks for making it interesting for a yank like me!
1:15:34 just saying as an Overlynationalistic Scot that Scottish isn’t a language in itself but Scottish Gaelic (Celtic) and Scots (Germanic) are. But yeah i agree having more representation from minority languages and music genres would be incredibly cool to send as a Eurovision Entry and I'm sure even if it was English and in a Celtic Style it would work incredibly well. Other than that small thing I had to be annoying about for absolutely no reason, amazing video that I thoroughly enjoyed!
Also, maybe it's just me, but the Irish entry seems to be somewhat cautionary. Both the music video and the live performance have Bambie eventually attacked by the creature she created. If I were promoting "satanisim," I don't know why I would have myself attacked by a "demon" in the end.
20:45 Not really - in East Slavic languages we call it "lodya" which is the word for ancient Slavic longships. Some langages call the rook - "cannon" (cool) and the original Persian name was "chariot".
Indeed. We've also got 'fortress' as an option in the Slavic world. I think 'tower' is mostly a Germanic one. (uncertain about Romance languages though)
I actually really liked the aurora inspired visual design and the bento box layout this year, plus it was really really funny that Malmo is the southernmost big city in Sweden so is like the one place in sweden that barely gets any Aurora, but eurovision weekend just so happened to coincide with the biggest geomagnetic storm of the past few years and basically all of europe got to see the Aurora Borealis... not me tho, I was sleep :(
I'm just gonna reply to my own comment with other observations I see while going through the vid lul. I'd argue We just love eurovision too much is more of a sequel to the opening act of semi 2 of 2016 "What is eurovision", it has a much more similar musical style to that one than to love love peace peace, so I think it makes sense for it to be the semi 2 interval. As for why it wasn't in the final I guess they thought that the fake ABBA performance would be a much bigger deal than it actually was I dunno.
I dunno how aware you were of belgium's track record in eurovision before getting into the fandom, but historically Wallonia has been the stronger of the two regions at the ESC, Flanders kinda overtaking them is a relatively recent thing. Look at 2015 and 2017 for instance both placed 4th and are big fan favorites among eurofans and those years were handeled by RTBF
Honestly I wouldn't describe Windows95man's win at UMK this year as smashing the televote, it makes it look like that since they shot up from last with the juries to first overall, but the public vote scores were a lot more spread out than in years with dominant winners like Blind Channel and Kaarija, less than a 10 percentage point difference between Sara Siipola and Windows95man 23% to 32%... honestly at this point I don't even get why finland's national selection even has the juries if the public can get a last place jury song to first overall without even needing a massive landslide win.
16:32 I'm not alone with that opinion anymoreeeeeee 2:11:51 People keep asking me why I love this song so much... I'm just gonna tell them to watch this video, and that's literally my thoughts 😂 2:15:40 I have watched at least 7 shows and rewatched every single contest since 2002, and this year's contest is definitely one of the best if not the best. The songs have definitely never been better than this year and the same for the staging. The contest itself, ignoring what else happened, was the best, in my opinion. There are no words to describe how much I love this year's contest and I hope 2025 will at least be close to this year
Yesss! Finally somebody who talks about the mid French lyrics! One of my biggest pet peeves this year was that everyone hyped it and it just sounded whiney to me because of the text 😭
1:45:13 as someone from Czechia. Marcus and Martinus have fans over here. They were really popular. When I was in middleschool. They are attractive and had songs that we liked. I was surprised that they aren't as well known as I thougth :"D
Herreys, the old men from the end of semi 2 are a Swedish Eurovision winner from 1984. Also about Sweden making fun of Finland, that's pretty much the point of our relationship, we're like rivalling siblings.
2:12:39 I saw live and it was kind of weird seeing people dressed in all black running around on stage pushing the spin around. Still an amazing performance though and a very worthy winner
After 6 days, I have finally finished watching whole video hahaha loved your review! So many great songs I still listen to, I hope to see Baby Lasagna perform in Basel next year like Käärija did this year, but at the grand final opening
You mentioned your first video in the outro and I noticed that it was published on 9/11! What was that about Malta’s Sarah Bonnici doing it on purpose at 2:29:24
Hey I appreciate you not blaming the walloons for the poor performance :) the RTBF is a functioning broadcaster but of course there will always be a blame game for our loss
Germany not only placed 12th, but they placed 12th for the first time :D Edit: I understand french to a degree and I found the lyrics of Mon Amour quite cute and he dropped the song at my birthday. :D
Olly Alexander broke the boundaries for what was believed to be possible - he was somewhow *too gay for Eurovision*
Nah, the song and performance just didn't land.
I don’t think anything is ever “too gay,” but there’s a limit of how much disconjunction fans are able to handle from lack of matching aesthetic.
@@Erik_Emer Eastern Europe might disagree.
That was his downfall. He went and said Eurovision was the gay olympics, he thought if he was the gayest he could he would win. But it’s not working that way

I WAITED SO LONG FOR THISSSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSS
I get the feeling that Mon Amour’s lyric are simple but i really feel the emotion of slimane’s voice makes it more like an actual poem than a song.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONGGGG
Yay!! I’ve been waiting for this 🫶💚
HOLY SHIT?! 3 HOURS OF EXILE IN EXTRA?!
Btw. I also listen to video game OSTs! You shouldn't feel bad about it at all! It's kind of like modern classical music, in a way. :)
Love ur content im also Flemish im 20 years and love eurovision. in the future i will make also a lot of those video's those video's really inspire me :)
i like how EBM has no enthusiasm in his voice and he speaks alot more monotone compared to extra. that's very cool 👍
2:21:05 this was actually shown before the beginning of the show, not during the Israeli performance
Luxembourg: some of the dancers were Portuguese and this was mentioned in the commentry so this could have contributed to Portugal givijg them points
i love this!! 💚 awesone video
On your question why Moldova gave so much to Azerbaijan: Apart from them having shared Soviet history, Moldova has a significant Turkic Gaugaz minority, which might have really liked the traditional Turkic style of the Azeri song
Oh thats cool I didnt even know Moldova had a Turkic minority
While that is true, the Gagauz minority is actually primarily speaking Russian. In Romania Moldova and some other Balkan countries, oriental sounds can be heard in local music as well, it is just more familiar here than it other parts in Europe.
Or maybe Moldova just really liked their music.
Finland - im afraid youre coping. The egg is based off Finnish mythology as confessed by Teemu himself. That said given Teemu's life philosophy im sure he is pro trans
i don't really care about eurovision but enjoy watching your content and hope for more in the future
finally finished! a great video was seen!
New video! Let's go!
i remember you
Knowing Lynda Woodruff is a character feels like me as a kid being told Santa isn’t real😭😭😭🙏
I attended Eurovision in person in Liverpool, but boycotted this year, so this vid was useful.
1:16:16 this has actually happened quite a few times. while some have made it to the left side, getting close has happened. I’m not exactly sure if you’re only referring to getting close, but just in case ima list some cases where they got past because I can.
from top of my memory:
2005, Latvia qualified in 10th place above Poland.
Songs a banger though
2011: Moldova once again, scraped in and then placed 12th in the grand final.
1:50:00 Portugal had acapella at the start...
God bless you
1:11:53 The Egg... Has broken 🏳⚧
37:31 good day m'sire, have you heard of a group called pauseAI?
love the kirby and undertale music
Also, maybe it's just me, but the Irish entry seems to be somewhat cautionary. Both the music video and the live performance have Bambie eventually attacked by the creature she created. If I were promoting "satanisim," I don't know why I would have myself attacked by a "demon" in the end.
I'm glad portugal got so high, I also liked what they did their stage and costumes
2:01:35 A lot of artists have a metronome going in their in ears, so Slimane might've had that to cue him on when the music would come back.
16:32 I'm not alone with that opinion anymoreeeeeee
2:11:51 People keep asking me why I love this song so much... I'm just gonna tell them to watch this video, and that's literally my thoughts 😂
2:15:40 I have watched at least 7 shows and rewatched every single contest since 2002, and this year's contest is definitely one of the best if not the best.
RAAAAAH NOG EEN TOPVIDEO VAN M'N FAVORIETE BELG 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
eerste en enige boven acceptable Belg
ur videos r great!
1:45:13 as someone from Czechia. Marcus and Martinus have fans over here. They were really popular. When I was in middleschool. They are attractive and had songs that we liked. I was surprised that they aren't as well known as I thougth :"D
1:19:24 yeah.... maybe give congrats to like Zorja or Konstrakta or something? 😅😅
yeah uh ooooops 😳
BITI ‘ZDRAVA!!!1!!1!1!!1!1!!1
have pneumonia rn, this vid made my fucking week brooo
Hope u get better soon :)
I'm confused on what went wrong at 35:49
Edit: As it's finishing up, this is a great video!
2:01:35 I think most if not all artists have click tracks on in their monitoring on Eurovision stage, so pretty sure this is a solved problem
1:05:40ish - and elevate it to the highest heights
Me: WILL YOU CATCH ME WHEN I FALL
OH YEAH
Herreys, the old men from the end of semi 2 are a Swedish Eurovision winner from 1984. Also about Sweden making fun of Finland, that's pretty much the point of our relationship, we're like rivalling siblings.
2:12:39 I saw live and it was kind of weird seeing people dressed in all black running around on stage pushing the spin around. Still an amazing performance though and a very worthy winner
It's 1 am I gotta watch this in the morning. I was here though!
What was that about Malta’s Sarah Bonnici doing it on purpose at 2:29:24
YEAAAAAAA ITS FINALLY HEREJ JEHDJWNSJWKGJW NOW I CAN LISTEN TO THHIS IN THE BACKGROUND FOR 3 HOURS AND PLAU GAMES TOO YEAAAAAA
A well researched, written and insightful video. This sort of content is what my autistic brain exists for :)
Hey I appreciate you not blaming the walloons for the poor performance :) the RTBF is a functioning broadcaster but of course there will always be a blame game for our loss
5:24 update: they decided to be in the in eurovision 2025
22:15 Iceland has a really big Polish diaspora.
Germany not only placed 12th, but they placed 12th for the first time :D
Edit: I understand french to a degree and I found the lyrics of Mon Amour quite cute and he dropped the song at my birthday. :D
