@@aazhie Like what? What are these provocative insights that she is so uniquely and courageously sharing? It’s all in your fantasy. She has said nothing that hasn’t been said, shown, or represented by numerous others. Not as interested in fame or money? Then why is she interested in being signed to a huge record label and touring with big acts like Olivia Rodrigo? Everyone who seeks to get into the major-label music industry prioritizes money and fame. Atlantic records would not invest in anyone that didn’t prioritize that. It’s how they make money. If you go back to the years before her fashion and image was a priority over her music, she made organic, good art. Now she sings cheesy pop songs. Because the masses, the dumber, cheesy, bigger crowds love it. And she prefers the bigger paychecks and bigger crowds. So she’ll make the music they like, instead of making more artistic, genuine music that is better but appeals to a smaller, more selective crowd. She’s a sell-out. Just like other pop-stars. Nothing original. But kids like you always think their faves invented the wheel.

Ooo I love this parallel. Another aspect of it is that both Harry and Chappell have been told that, whilst they have good points, they just "didn't say them in the right way" which is an excellent way of upholding abusive systems. Harry had been telling the public for years that he wasn't happy about the structure of the royal family or the press, and nobody listened until he started going public in a strategic way. I strongly suspect that Chappell complained to her team and individual journalists in a more polite, constrained way before going nuclear. However, people always focus on the victim's reactive explosion and say, "Well of course we'd have listened if only they'd have said it nicely." It's an excellent way of pretending to be a good person whilst continuing to uphold problematic systems.

    • @360shadowmoon

ALL OF THIS. I can tell you from personal experience that victims of abuse almost ALWAYS first try the gentle approach FIRST and no one listens to them. Then when they say it louder they get dismissed as angry or rude.

I'm open to discussion on this, but I have to say I don't care about Prince Harry and it does seem like he's seeking attention and then whining about it. His book and interviews keep getting shoved down my throat. I'm sympathetic to the abuse he's suffered from his family and the public. But, as an American, it feels like he's a Kardashian now.

It’s wild how some people feel entitled to every single aspect of celebrities’ lives.
Also something I don’t see people mention nearly enough about Chappell yelling at that photographer on the red carpet at the VMAs is that she was actually defending her stylist (the woman fixing her dress). Apart from shockingly many people that claim to have a mental illness themselves and still insist that 'that's life, you just have to pull yourself together, you can't just not go to work' -- I'm especially appaled by those who say someone as 'unreliable' ought not occupy a job were anyone depends on them, ought not go touring.

Chappell is in the great position that she has nothing to lose. She can stop music and has probably a few million dollars more than last year.
She has the luxury of "not going to work when she feels like it" but that doesn't mean that she's ungrateful. It just means that maybe people should (esp in the US) demand for a dignified basic such as paid sick days.

    • @TheNwr1
      @TheNwr1 Месяц назад +8

To be fair to those people, yeah, that’s often what they have to deal with. They’re just parroting what they have to put up with on the daily. Not that they should parrot it, not that they should deal with it, but I get it.
I don’t think Chappell Roan cancelling a concert is equivalent to missing a day of work, it’d be more like missing the final week to the completion of a big construction project that you were the foreman for, or something to that effect. It’s not the average day of work, and missing it has ramifications for people beyond the foreman. It is the reality though: there are some occasions where you will need to work through illness or injury. Only so many people can call in sick at a power plant or water treatment plant before shit starts breaking down on a societal level. If someone is in distress consistently enough, it’s fair to say that maybe that job is not a good fit for them (and let me be real clear on this: that does NOT mean employees can choose not to accommodate people. I mean it in the sense of: it wouldn’t be fair to hire someone who can’t lift more than 20 pounds, at a job where the only thing you do is lift 100 pound boxes).
At the same time, we’re always pointing out that mental health issues aren’t an excuse for the harm your behavior causes, and embracing the whole ‘suck it up, deal with it, push through’ mentality is a natural response to that. If you drop everything because you’re going through shit, you’re still responsible for what you dropped, right? It’s not unfair to extend that to Chappell…to a degree. Totally fair to be upset and never buy a ticket to one of her shows again. Completely unfair to harass her about it. Completely unfair to harass her in public just because she’s a celebrity. Celebrities, and people more broadly, don’t owe people shit. But that goes both ways, and you can’t really have a functional society full of people who operate solely under that ethos.

"Complaints" are actually questions they don't want to hear or can't answer. They are mad because a child is asking a question that they never thought to ask themselves.
Also, I had tickets for one of the shows she cancelled. I got an email a few days prior (with a refund, that seems to be debated?). I was disappointed, but didn't think much of it. I was traveling a bit for the concert, but everything was already booked and I knew I would still find other things to do and have a good time. A day before leaving, curiosity got the best of me and I made the mistake of googling why she cancelled. I could not believe how many "fans" were so outraged and calling to "cancel" her. Demanding that she refund lodging and travel fees. Like...if you were able to afford to go in the first place, you're not as desperate for money as you think you are. Things happen, just take the L and have fun anyways. What was scary was, as I scrolled through the comments, I started to feel angry, too. I had to check myself, like "wow, these comments are actually so powerful at inciting how people "should" feel about something because I literally barely cared two days ago". If I was a young chronically online fan, I could totally see how I'd get so sucked into the mob. It was a really scary feeling and made me feel really sad/scared for the youth or those who simply aren't as aware of themselves. They aren't just being socialized on what treatment to accept, but also how to treat others and if we look at that as what they deem as "appropriate" or "deserved" it is very worrying indeed.

A consequence of that no-boundaries nepo baby work culture is that it does actually trickle down to the rest of the performing arts. In the worlds I’m familiar with (dance, smaller scale full time musicians, and circus) many casting directors don’t hire folks older than their 20s not because there’s some sort of clock on their skills- patently untrue- but because folks develop too many boundaries as they mature and start asking too many questions about the work culture. I have literally heard casting directors say this. It’s not everyone of course but it is shockingly common.
In that and other ways, the work culture is normed toward folks with a lot of social capital in their industry already, and often some external financial support (you’d be shocked what a full time dance salary actually pays and what kinds of hours it asks, not to mention implied hours of cross training, recovery, outside classes, etc).
So, yes, it probably harms the nepo babies as well. Watch “Dear Hollywood” for more on that. AND it asks those same sacrifices of those of us who aren’t nepo babies and don’t have those resources in order to just stay in the field.

The people who escape get rejected by the people still in the cult or abusive family because the idea that they could also escape is too painful, much like you said in the video. And then others in the cult/family see how hard it would be leave, the total loss of support, and stay. Once you're in that situation, every decision is painful. Most people who responded to me were understand and in agreement but there were a few stand outs that didn’t. One basically said that I shouldn’t be a mother (to be clear, I made no mention of motherhood in my comment) and the others said that cancer sucks worse so suck it up, which is just unhelpful. What you said about people being resistant to breaking the status quo reminded me of this. Like can we not just agree that pap smears are generally a bad experience? I feel like there is this thing where ppl excuse anything bad by saying 'but they're really rich'. Like, in theory we know that 'money doesn't buy happiness', but was also seem to think that being wealthy means u should be happy/ok with whatever treatment/life u have. You can 100% be rich and/or famous and absolutely miserable. And having either of those things don't remove your need (and right) to basic human needs/wants. Edit: hah yep u just said exactly this

I don’t know anything about Chappell Roan but I do have experience with a kind of “nepo” baby syndrome because arguably we all experience this in our daily lives. How many people do we know either got a job because they know someone or was able to get into such and such school because of their parents. I work in US healthcare and it’s super common.
When I’ve struggled to get through an interview process at such and such hospital and eventually get hired on and surrounded by people who all know each other on some individual level prior to their employment. Is this so different than celebrity nepotism?
Over time or age I’ve learned not to begrudge this because these are the tools and resources that these people had to gain whatever they feel they need to be successful but like said in the video at what cost? What about the better skilled or more knowledgeable person getting passed over because they don’t go to the right church or come from alumni of a specific school.
It’s such a stranged and nuanced issue. That book sounds really interesting I’m gonna have to check it out.

She's so right for standing up for her boundaries and personal space, putting her foot down that she won't tolerate abuse from the media or her fans. We've had decades of celebs being treated like show ponies and turned into basically objects, from Pamela Anderson not having the theft of a private tape taken seriously when it got publicized and basically laughed off since she was blonde and had a specific image, to Brittany's very public meltdown over not wanting to be touched anymore. It's beyond time we recognize that this life is extremely stressful behind all the glam, and that these people are still people, artists who work hard to make their art, and still treat them with respect.

Your thoughts have made me have thoughts. I saw an interview with someone who's written a book called inheritocracy about the wide reaching importance and class significance of the "bank of mum and dad".. the idea that so much wealth is stored in our parents generation (if you're millennial or gen z) that access to that is very important for class position. Was thinking about that when you mentioned about nepo-babies which is just another way of accessing the bank of mum and dad but more their bank of connections and favours and contacts. I was also thinking about fame being dehumanising only yesterday cos I watched one of those "celebrity reads their own thirst tweets" vids and I thought it would be kinda funny and it was actually not very nice?? Like.. the stuff they were reading was dehumanising and pretty gross and I thought about how isolating it would be to be treated that way.. and I don't really write thirst tweets or whatever but I don't always see celebrities as real people either.. it's like when you're in the car and you wouldn't walk really close behind a slow walker on the street but somehow the casing of the car means you tailgate or swear at ppl (although they can't hear you).. you treat them differently because other drivers are also not really people somehow

I think we need to remember that being a celebrity is a separate job from the work you are "famous" for. People are not famous because of their art alone - it's networking, favoritism, marketing. Creating the illusion that this person is special. Hiring promoters and marketers and managers who do all that social work for you. You have to work to build fame. Today, being good at what you do does not naturally bring you money from fame and recognition. You generally have to participate in other activities that build a story around you, dehumanize you and turn you into a myth or an object for consumption. And it's usually someone else doing it to you, or for you.
It's sad that we equate fame and recognition with success at all. Success according to whom? Why are we deciding if someone else is successful? You don't even know if this is what they really wanted.
We dehumanize each other in so many ways. I think it's definitely a problem that we excuse abuse for celebrities, but it's part of the greater problem of fame and prestige in general. It doesn't make sense to worship other human beings the way we do. Celebrities are dehumanized by their very status as celebrities - they shouldn't be treated poorly, and I also think they shouldn't be treated better than people who are not famous. Not to mention the obvious absurdity of their incomes. Good lord.
I don't know what a different culture would look like, but the one we have now is based in so much manipulation. Marketing is truly out of control, and I don't know what the solution is, other than companies scaling it back. Ordinary consumers scaling it back. The news and entertainment media scaling it back.

@@alexjames7144 first of all, most celebrities are not part of the 1%, which is mostly comprised by big companies and their owners. Secondly, mental health issues do not care if you're rich, and they should always be taken seriously, regardless of the person's economic status. "Hoarding wealth" isn't relevant context to someone's mental health. You can be anti capitalist and still recognize the importance of mental health. Thirdly, defending someone's right to privacy and basic human decency is in no way related to a person's ideological beliefs about the economic system. Claiming that in order to be anti capitalism, you _must_ want rich people to suffer is nonsense. The problem is the system and the people upholding it, and those people are politicians and business owners, not a random pop singer who is asking people to respect her basic human rights. Shouting about how much you hate celebrities and the one percent online does absolutely nothing to solve any of these issues. People defending celebrities' right to privacy and bodily autonomy are not automatically defending a Capitalist system, they're defending other people's human rights.
