Making anything sound good out of the Albert Hall is nigh on a miracle. They've been trying to fix the acoustics since just after the very first concert there in 1872. It's the rotunda form that causes dead spots and other distortions.
Probably helped that the only live mics on the stage would've probably been for vocals, crowd mics and the drum kit - pretty sure they'd have everything else running direct with Axe-FX units and whatnot.
I don't get emotional, but that last part with the screams sounded like real suffering and I couldn't help but cease breathig and tear up. This is true art in its simplicity.
Devy is one of the most talented and most humble guys in metal. I have seen him live 4 times and every time is a transcendent experience. You should check out his earlier band Strapping Young Lad. either "Detox" or "Love?".
When Devin's screaming he's screaming in tune. You can hear the note he's screaming as well as the articulated words coming out of his mouth. He's got his vocals down... and his song writing skills and his guitar skills, production skills etc... He's just one extremely creative guy who perfected "The Wall of Sound" style.
Grace is like an out of body experience. the Live one at retinal circus...pure heaven. Stormbending (official video) and supercrush (live) Universal flame (live) are good ones too.
Love that you noticed the way he looks at and talks to his audience. I’ve seen him live a few times, and I think it’s confidence, but also understanding and gratitude. There’s playfulness and love there, I think it has to do with maturity gained over the course of his own journey. It’s part of what makes him beloved and a legend in the metal community.
Totally agree. Saw him in Denmark some years ago in a smallish venue, and after the concert we were about 30 people standing around talking. And then Devin and all of the band members came out and just said hello to everybody, and had a little talk and a photo taken if that was your thing. Very relaxed and down to earth all of them. And if my memory serves me right they all spend about 45 minutes doing these very informal meet and greet. Myself I just thanked Devin for a great concert experience, and he said "thank you for saying that". And he seemed to really mean it.
Haha I JUST watched your video for "kingdom" and wondered "I wonder if he has seen deadhead at the royal albert" and then... "1 MINUTE AGO" you upload this hahah
Fucking hell Devin... I don't know how many times I've listened to this song but every time the dude leaves me in awe. Those pitched screams are just sublime dude...
Bruh I'm dying😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 "It looks like someone threw some hot water on his back" 😂😂😂😂😂 That's the best description of a singing face I have ever heard in my life. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
My guy this is one of the few voices on earth that have ever moved me to tears just with its tremendous power and presence. His voice is just as all encompassing as the music.
Devin's pitched screams are on a whole 'nother level from what I've heard anyone else do. Thanks for checking this one out! It's a special performance.
Devin has that talent to entertain. He's straight forward and honest with his audience, never more proven than when he entertained a crowd for about twenty minutes whilst techs repaired a broken amp situation.
I just love your reactions... Every time I see you hearing a song for the first time I become a little bit jealous because it's such a wonderful feeling hearing such a masterpiece as Deadhead for the first time.
Two of Devin's guitars are sitting in my dining room right now. Nah, I didn't steal them, my son is his guitar tech. He's one of the nicest guys on the planet. A tormented genius. Long live Dev.
Thank you man !!! I saw Devin live 8 years ago and my reaction was smile ... yeah just smile. This music getting through the vein and stay in this. Devin is so charasmatic and the music do the rest. Absolutly perfect !!!
Going down the Devin Townsend rabbit hole is really fun. I hope you check out one of his songs that feature Anneke, like Grace: her singing really complements his music and vocals.
Yes! Definetly go see Devin when ever you can! It's worth it, wether you're into this music or not. He's such an entertainer, and really funny. This band is done though, the Devin Townsend Project (DTP), but he's ALWAYS working on new stuff! I caught the last tour wit DTP, I've seen him solo acoustic and I've seen him with his newest concept. A bunch of AWESOME talents that he gathered. You know what? Now he's even started something completely new in our isolated corona virus times, and it's of course called 'Quarantine'! That man is so brilliant at doing his thing! I love him! A tremendous FORCE of good in this world! ❤️
In my experience as a long time listener of Devin Townsend, he has a way of writing music that really hits you on a pure emotional level like no one else. I've listened to some of his stuff and felt emotions I didn't even know existed before I heard it in a song.
I've seen some amateur footage of him singing Bring Him Home... I tend to really not like musical theatre, but Devi and an acoustic guitar is really good.
Roger O'Donnell Here’s some “Pro” footage with audio mixed by Devin of Bring Him Home for a special he did with CBC ruclips.net/video/9hf9bwelMW8/видео.html
Fuego hoodie! Stoked you checked some more Devin. I've seen some comments from people saying check out Strapping Young Lad. It really will blow your mind. Devin also does ambient records that are amazing.
Devy is just... words can't describe him. His music spans every emotion and when you meet him he's the sweetest guy in the world. He's not pretentious, he's not arrogant, he's not at all what you'd think a "rock star" would be. He's just a guy who signs your forehead, chats with you, and gives you a huge hug. The total package.
I am still so sorry I wasnt able to travel out for this show that weekend. They also had a pre-rehersal show for the fans that came in early that night. Devin is a master and I often mention that he should really start teaching in Manhattan. I love this guy. I still wanna book a weekend show for him a few years down the road for Carnegie Hall or Radio City. He'd sell it out like he always does. I night with Sir. Devin Townsend and Friends..
You are absolutely correct when you say that that feeling is great. It is also not ego. It is a god-given gift that you are sharing. He is confident, but he has suffered greatly. He is a shining example.
Townsend is by far one of my favorite artists of all time. He is a musical genius. There will never be another Hevy Devy. Empath is such a great record, if you haven't listened to it yet, i highly recommend it.
Devin Townsend has been the second best concert that i have seen live. Nightwish is the favourite, Jinjer and Arch Enemy very good too. Hard to pick from hundreds of concerts that i have been through my life.
Devin is the man. Saw him live a week before the COVID lockdown of everything. He performed Deadhead and he also went back and performed Love? from his old days with Strapping Young Lad. Would LOVE to see you react to THAT. A much more angry and aggressive Devin Townsend in those days. Love your reaction videos.
Oh man. so glad you went back to explore some of Devin's stuff. his range is so vast, that its hard to pick his style off one song. if you want to hear him do some mellow, blues/country stuff, listen to his other band "Casualties of cool" or if you want to hear when he does metal, listen to his former band "Strapping Young Lad" that is part of what made him so good at his controlled screams!
That face is pure and untainted passion. Every album of his and anything he appears on is incredible, but watching him perform live, even if on youtube, gives his music so much more life
Absolutely unreal performance, Devin is truly a phenomenal musician, he can do everything and produces pretty much everything he releases. Great reaction video Jamel, you’re very authentic and I think it’s awesome that you can appreciate music that might be radically different to what you’re used to. Ps, you’ve done a few Rush songs but haven’t done Xanadu yet! That is a must listen to song, you’ll enjoy it. It is as epic as they get!
The best way to listen and understand metal style vocals is to think of vocals like brush strokes. They are painting a picture. Pain sounds like pain. Anger like anger, love like love, etc. Devin is one of the best at this.
Woooooh! Mah boy couldnt wait! I understand you completely, with all the comments hype,if i werent aware of this performance,i would go super excited too! And i love that you brought in the heaphones (as usual) for this one too,as you will hear everything about the instruments, vocals, atmosphere etc. 10:12 I know Jamal i know, this is the part wich has made people just confirm that Devin is from another planet. He goes soo high here, that he is on that thin thin red line of what is humanly possible to do,explained by a few vocal coaches allready. And how long he stayed up there.......beyond mindblowing! And that guitar is his own build, his own design. Insanely dedicated guy,who is a passionate guitar nerd, and not slightly worried on admitting it. Watch a few of his interviews about him and his guitars, and you will understand just how complicated, unique his guitars really are. Amazing stuff! You might be right about him being related to that male boss thing in I Am Legend, afterall😏
Take a look at the Royal Albert Hall itself. Then imagine a handful of Canadian dudes not only filled it with people, they filled it with pure, beautiful NOISE.
Devin is able to scream in key. It's truly one of the most difficult things to do. The groove in the song has everyone locked in and enjoying this piece of art. I KNEW you would like this one.
Ive only played small smallllll gigs yet still that look and feeling youre talking about in the beginning is a great feeling. Its definitely worth it all at that moment.
Almost jumped outta my skin when I saw the title of this video! This felt like a religious experience the first time I heard it. So glad you liked it :D
This is my favorite version. Hopefully it stays up. I found several that have kept theirs, but a lot have also gotten blocked. Wonderful reaction as always!
I really don't know why your channel was recommended to me, but hey, glad it was, and I just so love your reaction to the not of this world talent of the Devin! See that top you have on, that's where Devin hales from😂 🤘💝🇦🇺
So damn good every time I hear it. Highly recommend The Death of Music by him also Live at the Royal Albert Hall. It's a more mellow song but shows his vocal prowess super well.
Jamel, it's not yelling! He's on Pitch everytime. Plus if you knew what the song was about you'd understand why he sings the way he does, especially in this particular song. There is always a "Method to his Madness"! His singing voice is Perfect in my books, I literally Love Devin!!
I clicked on that pretty quick. I can see why you wore the Star Wars Shirt, that reaction was out of this world. All of your star wars shirt reactions were great.
Saw him in Seattle at a 150 person bar/club in like 2012. He was awesome, but it is sort of strange - and cool - to now see him playing in front of thousands when I saw him with 100 people, some guys with 5 yo kids on their shoulders. He rules, very cool dude. Thanks for the reaction!
I’d buy you a few drinks if I ever saw you at a concert just because I appreciate you giving this genre a chance. Your description about the hot water on his back had me dying though. I’m gonna think of that every time I watch this video now lol!!
I’ve seen many comments that he was sick with a cold while performing at Albert Hall. To be under the weather and still sound that amazing is a testament that he and the band are Master Class Musicians!
Dev did a whole bunch of live-streamed concerts to raise money for hospitals, I recommend the song “Why?”. From there.......he also did an outdoor show from an ancient amphitheater in Plovdiv, Romania, backed up by an orchestra. Dev’s music got me through some bad times, I’m glad it’s finding it’s way to more people.
Ya know what separates you from other reactors in my opinion? You don't start your videos off "HEY WE'RE BACK WITH ANOTHER REACTION!" you're just a chill dude trying to listen to good music, and I like that. Been watching your stuff for a while now and that just stood out to me.
Just keep going. The death of music is Epic. So I saw Devin and was right in front. Like 2 ft away. I just stood there like a statue . I was in dis belief. It was amazing.
Also the Retinal Circus is an amazing show to watch. I was there and it's handsdown the best show I've ever been too, devvy spent the entirety of his break during the set meeting the front row of people. And of course it's narrated by Steve Vai, and Ziltoid has a baby
wondering if i should say as i dont see anyone has brought it up that i can see but devin had laryngitis during this performance which to me shows how talented he really is, love the music and love the reaction , keep it up
This gives me chills no matter how many times I’ve heard it
Always brings a tear to my eye.
Me too!!
Finally saw him play it in December and I was crying by the last chorus
Cant stop seeing this video and reactions of it. Amazing performance!
Softens my frozen black heart
The sound engineer deserves a Grammy, it was a eargasm.
Pretty sure that's Devin too?
Yup, Devin mixed the recordind for the DVD.
That would be Devin Townsend... Again :P
Making anything sound good out of the Albert Hall is nigh on a miracle. They've been trying to fix the acoustics since just after the very first concert there in 1872. It's the rotunda form that causes dead spots and other distortions.

Devin Townsend has to be the most underrated musical performer of the 21st Century. I think he's fantastic.
I don't get emotional, but that last part with the screams sounded like real suffering and I couldn't help but cease breathig and tear up. This is true art in its simplicity.
Same
F'en eh! gets me every time
Devy is one of the most talented and most humble guys in metal. I have seen him live 4 times and every time is a transcendent experience. You should check out his earlier band Strapping Young Lad. either "Detox" or "Love?".
I would add "Aftermath" and "Relentless" to those as well hehe.
Wrong side is still my favorite...
don't forget "all hail the new Flesh"
SHitstorm as well
Add a vote for SYL the song itself, as well.
My favorite part is when he made fun of the crowd for all clapping out of rhythm with each other. "Pick a tempo!"
Hehe I was wondering if someone was gonna mention that part lol.
This song literally chokes me up because of how beautiful it is.
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
When Devin's screaming he's screaming in tune. You can hear the note he's screaming as well as the articulated words coming out of his mouth. I second all of these! Great choices.
Definitely Grace from The Retinal Circus!
he played that at my first concert, devin townsend is one of the greats for sure
Devins music can be described as a waterfall of sound. That's why it grabs people and is so universal to all.
Love that you noticed the way he looks at and talks to his audience. I’ve seen him live a few times, and I think it’s confidence, but also understanding and gratitude. There’s playfulness and love there, I think it has to do with maturity gained over the course of his own journey. It’s part of what makes him beloved and a legend in the metal community.

lol yeah I love when he looks out over the crowd of people all clapping out of tune with each other and tells them to "Pick a tempo!"
That and the balls to rock a SKULLET for years lol

In perfect pitch too 👌 LMFAO!
I love this song and it's energy! What amazes me is that last scream, how far away he is from the mic . Such talent
In these times of isolation, watching these reaction videos is like having a friend. Thanks.
My guy this is one of the few voices on earth that have ever moved me to tears just with its tremendous power and presence. His voice is just as all encompassing as the music.

Devin Townsend - Why
It’s a journey in and of itself
I'm going to see him in Dallas in March. Looking forward to it.
I’ve seen many comments that he was sick with a cold while performing at Albert Hall. To be under the weather and still sound that amazing is a testament that he and the band are Master Class Musicians!
Spirits Will Collide is his latest and one of his greatest songs. Another misty eyed song. Hits me every time.
God those pitched screams at the end will always give me goosebumps
Whooo, goosebumps every time 🤘
Jamal, he will be touring at some point this year. If he is stopping by your city or close, go check him out! Experience it!

Funfact, he was singer for Steve Vai when he was 18 or 19.
For real eargasm you MUST see the Retinal Circus concert, just litterally mind blowing.
