the way magic powers have certain caveats sometimes or make even the most powerful of mages have a bad matchup against others with specific abilities is dope and they handle it quite well in this anime.
The directing in this series is so godly. We get POV shots like the one where they were fighting and that one between both of her legs. It makes the scene a lot more dynamic and fun to watch(in more ways than one)
compared to Laufen, who is fast and nimble with her cqc, i love how HEAVY and slow Ubels attacks are and it shows in the destruction she creates. most shows have characters with fast attacks coupled with heavy destruction which in my opinion takes away from the action. but with Ubel you can really take in the weight of her attacks BECAUSE of how slow and impactful they are

I was expecting a Witcher reference, since the evil in "If I have to choose between one evil and another, I'd rather not choose at all" is "übel" in German.
This is only because german makes difference between Bose and Ubel as Ubel is used in lesser evil. In original Witcher polish version there is no semantical difference in evil as there is in german ubel vs bose. I'd even argue than Bose makes more sense in this context if we ignore lesser evil phrasal verb translation as (if i remember correctly from my german language education) Ubel isn't inherently tied to making decision against morality(what is defined as good in the meaning of good-evil conflict) which is the meaning of quote in original Witcher

This show is a rare masterpiece among anime. The animation is breathtaking, the characters are wonderful, and it succeeds in giving you a sense of wonder for magic that a lot of media seems to fail to do anymore.

The first few episodes hit hard, but then after a while, I was considering dropping it until they wound up going up against those demons, and suddenly the show became a lot more interesting. Then it went back to being somewhat boring until we got to this mage exam arc, and now it's back to being a must-watch anime.

My favorite moment is when she asks you really want to die. I wondered if she meant herself, and then she increases the distance to become paralyzed. This is fantastically writing.
While she didnt want to fight herself, she did. Solo. She did use Land as a distraction but the fight was all hers. Say what you want, she earned her 1st mage spot.
