I agree with that sentiment, the calm calculated approach is very refreshing. I can understand a Pyromancer drawing upon a wellspring of rage to channel a conflagration but not for traditional mages. Traditional mages have too much to calculate to waste energy on excessive emotions. Mages have to calculate the mana cost, output, range, the potential collateral damage, and their spellcasting glyphs while trying to be aware of their surroundings to defend themselves. A lot of mages shown in anime are often downright in the uncanny valley when it comes to believability.
One thing I think Frieren does better than almost any modern anime is show how knowledgeable and powerful a being thousands of years old would actually be, she dissects and plans rather boasts about her prowess, she’s even aware when she would lose in certain situations. This anime is such a breath of fresh air in the modern landscape, I think Gigguk described it as “Tolkien-esque” and I think that’s pretty much the nail on the head
Tolkien's view of fantasy has been pretty much the go to for a lot of current-day stories about medieval fantasy. In fact, the way we spell the word "elves" was because of him. Before Tolkien, the plural word of elf was spelled "elfs." Pretty crazy to think about.
With this and Serie's comment, it's extra funny to know she did all this just to let another mage shine. She even didn't do it to show off, or to say hello to Serie. She just wanted Kanne to be able to use her abilities.
@@dc1397not exactly, Frieren was indulging in a whim. She thought it was rude to magic for the barrier to be interfering with a mage's test. So she broke it to let that mage enjoy water magic in the rain. She didn't do it to be nice, or to let the youngins grow or anything. Her principles just said "this barrier is offensive, I'll remove it."
@LibertyMonk she did it for the exact reason we stated, for her teammate to win her battle. Frieren even recalled a conversation about how every party has a different makeup. Frieren fulfilled her end by defeating Denken and Laufen to destroy the barrier for Kanne and Lawine. She cannot move on to the second stage without the girls. They all learned from each other.
we see from the conclusion of the exam, Frieren never wanted or intended to pass, she was mostly there to support Fern, and it seems like she thought while she's there she might as well do something for the other aspiring mages she got paired up with.
She probably had multiple ideas behind it. She did it because she felt the barrier was a limitation on the test, she did it to let her team win, and she did it to say hello to serie
As the strongest mage in history (serie) casted an unbreakable barrier, Frieren the strongest mage of today used her imagination, and said "Throughout the world of magic, Heaven and earth can be turned upside down, as I am alone the honoured one", Frieren broke the barrier with ease, Serie smiled, and replied "stand proud Frieren, you are strong"
And right after it, the next frame is a green impact frame with young Frieren's silhouette, it's trickier to see than Serie's (a black and white impact frame). I love it when they hide little details like that, unless you frame by frame it or lucky pause it, you're bound to miss it.
I liked how the barrier breaks and Sense simply pulls out an umbrella, while Genau sits there getting rained on. Sense planned for the unexpected while Genau was so sure that nothing could possibly happen.
REALLY like how they foreshadowed Frieren was going to break the barrier by revealing her party members could control water/ice early on and then several times over the arc showed the Rain hitting the barrier (even having characters comment on it). That combined with the commentary made this my favorite scene since the Zoltraak fight. Magic is often described as "making the impossible, possible" so they were right on point with the dialogue 👏🔥
It's fun watching the episodes leading up to this moment. They make sure to let you know over and over and over again that it was raining outside of the supposedly unbreakable barrier. You knew going into this episode that Frieren was breaking that barrier for the two girls to make usage of the rain. It wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when and how. Made the anticipation all the better. Instead of it being a surprise, you knew it was coming and knew it was going to be a big moment.
Yeah I'm rewatching with my mom and this entire time she's been thinking that they did that to show that kanne isn't weak, this is just a counter to her. And then this happened, she was really excifed
She's not even THAT strong. Frieren appearing USUALLY solves a problem, but not always. Especially later on, I won't spoil anything but as they get deeper into the northern lands more and more threats appear that give Frieren a hard time.

And this thought came later, but that situation, her arm turning to gold, might be the reason she stopped fighting demons (when Himmel the Hero ask her to join them, she said it had been 500 years and had forgotten how to fight them, so on the note, the time line matches up).
I saw two anime that present both sides of the. In one, title something like Strongest Demon Lord Reincarnates, person reincarnated did everything and kept them save, so they didn't really have a chance to grow. The other was strong, yes, but didn't have the reflexes to apply their strength, thus being defeated by someone weaker. Both were very lower-mid tier anime, same world reincarnation, super strong mc types. Cool scenes with magic... definitely not for everyone.
The entire build up to this scene was insane. Everything was pointing to the barrier braking, the music,Frieren’s confidence, the feeling that the doubters are about to be proven wrong. So the moment Sense confirmed that it was going to break just made the stillshot of the broken barrier hit even harder. Such an amazing scene!
I love how Frieren is super arrogant when it comes to the most trivial things, like blowing a kiss, or how the spell to detect a mimic is only 99% accurate, or how she has the perfect present for Stark (a potion for making clothes vanish), but her absolute control over magic is not one of those things. She pulled off an impossible feat just so then two girls she just met could shine in a magic test.
I love how Frieren is such an underdog even while being the mage of the Hero’s party, and its written so that this isn’t really a main focus and just a byproduct due to the long passage of time. Like many characters are still aware of who she is and her title but not exactly how powerful she is.
Since Flamme asked for it... It makes sense. But, if you consider the real life equivalent, there are mountains of examples of this happening over and over again. For instance: Who's the guy that killed Bin Laden?

I always thought of magic as using mana to manipulate reality, therefore mana is "doing" science similar to the black hole.. Thus the triangles are fractals, and the barrier is built using fractals, it like she is literally injecting different shaped fractal to break the structure of the barrier, like throwing a rock to disrupt the gears of a machine.

The scene after with Serie talking about how she knows it's Frieren and that magic makes the impossible, possible was such a good counterpart to this conversation. Humans in this world must *really* not have ever thought about the consequences of elves' longevity - maybe because they're so rare that they've never *had* to think about it - but it's not unwise to assume that any elf you pass by must've lived much longer than humanly possible and so should have magic capabilities far stronger than yours if they're a mage.
You can have a lot of fun with the human inability to comprehend that kind of longevity in DnD. Either as a DM with elf NPCs, or as a player with an Elf PC. A middle age 400 year old elf can really trip a DM up when they talk about ancient ruins that are 200 years old, only to realise one of their PCs was alive and kicking back then. :P Or that moment when one of the players thinks to just ASK the Elf who was there when it happened for details on what actually went down instead of trying to read ancient legends.

And the effect of the barrier being cracked in the digital then physical sense here as well at 0:33.
Thank you for waiting a week before uploading this. It really does suck getting spoiled by Crunchyroll uploads, so I’m glad people who are watching Frieren at least have a week to watch it (rather than the usual couple hours)
I love that it took the entire time she was there to analyse the barrier. It wasn’t some instant analysis, it took time and effort to understand and create a counter.
When I first watched this scene I thought, for sure this is the anime's peak. Nobody was expecting something like that even less this causality, her blasé attitude as that was just one more Wednesday, was very surprising. But this was until the "heigh of magic". The director for this anime deserves all congrats because this anime is pure gold.
I like to think that Frieren broke the barrier with a combination of otherwise innocuous spells like “create shaved ice”, “de-rust copper”, and “see through clothes”.
It’s probably why she actually could do it , while in this era most mages just go along with the teachings , most don’t even understand how the basics truly work , which is why the most OP understand that with the basics you can do anything
Probably a tome from Graf Granat helped, too. Let's not forget that one. The tome is fake, the barrier it describes is nothing like the barrier used by the city. But it probably was similar enough to this barrier? Every little helps! What I LOVE about Frieren that NOT ONCE did she pull something simply out of her "posterior" - everything she does is foreshadowed and accounted for. And all the other characters, as well.
@@Cordisen Also she was an apprentice to Flamme who made the city barriers. It makes sense that she has a better understanding of the secret techniques behind barriers than most, and never shares them for fear of them falling into demon hands.
Keep in mind the barrier was cast by a great mage, Serie. The most elite mages of that time considered it unbreakable. Also, there was a similar barrier created by Flamme, protecting Graf Granat's domain, which demons, including the Demon King, could not break for hundreds of years. This is all just to highlight how insanely skilled Frieren is.

0:25 I like how analyzing the barrier was like decrypting code, and the vector crossing effect made me think of lattice encryption, which uses coordinates, fixed position movers, and 100+ “dimensions” to encrypt data. And the effect of the barrier being cracked in the digital then physical sense here as well at 0:33.
What... is your degree in? Mine is Space Studies, and I really only know what about half of that is, but I couldn't even start to put it into practice
Those 2 frames of Serie at 0:28 is so cool
HOW THE HELL DID YOU CATCH THAT???
Nice one!
OH DAMN, dude how did you even catch that?!
very smart
I really love how all of Frieren's most epic moments....she hardly moves!
The epic pigtails beg to differ.
Thank you for waiting a week before uploading this. It really does suck getting spoiled by Crunchyroll uploads, so I’m glad people who are watching Frieren at least have a week to watch it (rather than the usual couple hours)
As someone who discovered and watched the 1st season recently, this scene STILL gave me goosebumps!! One of the best animes I've seen!
Yup
It makes sense that she has a better understanding of the secret techniques behind barriers than most, and never shares them for fear of them falling into demon hands.
cannot get over how perfect the music is for this
Music was hitting so hard I had to turn my tv up
We could’ve really needed Frieren in Undertale
Why? It's been many years since i played it so i forgot if there's a barrier or something
@@scio577yes… the magical barrier that sealed all the monsters underground…
@@mathieul4303 oh my bad lol. When's the next deltarune chapter btw?
@@scio577that barrier is pretty much what the plot of Undertale is about
A while a long while. But probably mid this year@@scio577
I love that Sense brought an umbrella full well prepared for the barrier to break
She targets the weakest point of it as well. Furthest from all support points on the ground and under the most tension. Smart
"No one can break the barrier"
Frieren: "NUH UH"
Now I need to hear frieren say NUH UH
I’ve been repeating this part agian and again, do even remember it’s around 14:40something. Thank you crunchyroll
2023: Anime of the Year.
2024: Anime of the Year....again?! No fillers. No Reruns, No Non-Sense. If anything, it's getting better and better like a fine aged wine. UNREAL.
As a German, it is entertaining to see that all Persons/Places are named after german verbs/nouns
What do the main character names mean
@@friedhotwings Some of the names in this show are really funny because they are so on the nose :)
Frieren - to feel cold/freeze (verb)
Fern - far away (adjective)
Stark - strong (adjective)
Himmel - sky/heaven (noun)
Eisen - iron (noun)
Heiter - cheerful (adjective)
@@nionafleming4301 thank you
Japanese VAs usually butcher foreign words but they took the extra effort to pronounce most German words correctly which just shows how much everyone is doing their best with frieren.
@@friedhotwings also Denken means to think and Richter is a judge. It describes them so well, how one always tries to plan and rhino ahead while the other judges other mages too quickly
Gods!! The music makes this show alone!!! Eargasms for all
This was one of the most epic scenes in the show, eclipsing even Frieren as a dark souls boss
Not just the show of the scene itself, but the whole build-up to it
just this clip doesn't capture a shard of the whole .. epicness
The score and sound design for this show is impeccable. It brings so much life and grandiosity to the character and the world.
This show is a masterpiece. Most shows use their most dramatic music every time there’s tension, this one only uses it when she does something truly powerful and I love that
The ost in general is really one of the best. It's perfect fantasy music.
HELP THE TITLE 😭😭 I SWEAR SOMEONE HACKED INTO CRUNCHYROLL'S ACC
Very unpopular opinion, but I think this might just be my favourite scene in all of anime. It gives me goosebumps every single time I watch it.
"Genau. It' gonna break"
"It WON'T. It won't break"
"Genau it's gonna BREAK"
"No it won't"
"IT'S BREAKING!"
"OH-"
This is just how elven mages say “hello”.
"The 1st test is to capture a bird"
*Frieren (New Game+): casually shatters impenetrable barrier with EPIC visuals and OST to give party member rain buff
"The 2th test is to Raid a Dungeon"
*Frieren becomes the Final Boss and Sense it's relegate to vigilante labours.
I can't wait for the full soundtrack to be released
This video should be 20 seconds longer to approciate the music until the end
I love that she just humbly made that epic flex for the sake of her teammate to help her out. Our girl is learning.
"Even if the World turned upside down..."
*Barrier shatters*
Gol D. Roger watching from a distance, turns to Rayleigh. "Send an invitation. I need her on the crew!"
THE TITLE IM CRYING??
I just noticed that Sense had an umbrella ready. Just in case.
Man i don’t know, but the hype moments in this show are done so extremely well. The music elevated it 🔥
Shout out to Evan Call this soundtrack!!! Perfect
One of the most epic scenes.... this and episode 26.
Evan Call is the Goat.
Como eu amo esse anime. Já assiste umas 3 vezes. ❤ Comprei todos os mangás. Inglês e japones. Que primor de historia.
Genau: But that’s impossible!
Frieran: Darling, you have no idea about what’s not possible.
I think i now get why Flammes barriers re so strong. By imbuing the spell into something that will grow in time the spell will only grow stronger.
Title should have been: "Frieren flips the world upside down."
I didn't acknowledge how much the soundtrack adds to this scene the first time I watched it!
Denken's reaction is perfect
Kanne: Ya know, I’d be truly terrifying to fight in a rainstorm. Too bad that barrier is unbreakable.
Frieren: Roger that, breaking the barrier.
"Can you imagine defeating a mage who controls water in the rain? At the very least, I cant." - Frieren to Denken, just before this clip.
*ALL HAIL FRIEREN THE DESTROYER!!*
How many triangles? YES
Props to whoever named the video
Whoever names these videos is not paid enough.
90k...
Now i have to go back and check if any other titles were changed lol
The Serie flash when she casts is only for the splitest of seconds yet it was seen. Amazing
Music, animation, story, characters. 10/10 anime
Damn Denken's beard has better animation then most shows out there
dont forget the silver pigtails! Those have their own personalities
Genau: “you can’t just turn the world upside down, man”
Frieren: “I can, but that’s because I’m not a penniless hippie”
Absolute peak. They were gassing Frieren up the entire episode saying this is was impossible and she absolutely killed it. It would have been sick if they didn't cut the next 20s when they show Serie and her line about sometimes magic turning the world upside down
HOW CAN THE MUSIC BE THAT GREAT
I think the holy symbol might have been something from Flammes time. High ranking continental magic association members still recognize it because as Series students they are fairly aware of Flamme and by extent things like that. She's the last great mage bec she's one of flammes students and Series students from long past eras. That's my theory anyways.
0:28 There is a badass black and white impact frame when Frieren casts the spell good luck stopping the video to see it.
The black and white impact frame has Serie, so cool
The best part is the experienced old mage watching in awe as a more experienced old mage breaks the "unbreakable" barrier
For those wondering the name of the soundtrack is "Frieren the slayer" it was released a few weeks ago.
What i loved about this anime is despite super simple art style, when it came down to it, it had some of the most amazing animations
Such chills, every time I rewatch this scene
0:56 I've seen this clip multiple times and I just realized that Sense is opening/invoking an umbrella.
Nice detail.
God, this show is so good. I'm already tempted to watch it a third time this year.
That scene is amazing.
Can we all appreciate the music of this show? It never fails
*Denken thinking he was being flashy.
*Frieren: Shield go brrrrr
The goddamn title! I swear it's changed from when I first watched this clip
for moments like this i would love special episodes that would just concentrate on others reactions during that scene
I can’t stop watching this clip
This scene would perfectly fit to the soundtrack of skyrims "dragonborn". Right when the refrain hits and the barrier breaks.
