This is one of what makes this series interesting. Hiding one's power is something many anime protagonist did and so this isn't a new idea and just a cliche. However the reasoning is slightly deeper, the enemy isn't a haughty human noble who looks down on others simply because their power seems weak, the enemy is a race whom, to their core, believe that mana is directly related to strength and thus can dominate others and you SHOULD showoff your power so that others won't dominate you, which is why hiding one's strength is something that never crossed in their mind and why that is their weaknesses.
Just as an extra detail. Demons can suppress their mana. But they usually only ever do it for stealth in surprise attacks. But as you said earlier, they rarely enjoy such tactics.
Little precision on that : it's not just simply hiding one's mana that is a strategy against demons, it's doing it so much than it becomes second nature. Because power (and mana) is the basis of the life and the society of demons, there's no race in the frieren universe that uses it as instinctively as demons (not even elves). Anyone can hide their mana for some time but it would be temporary and quite flawed if not done expertly, so that wouldn't fool a trained demon. One has to dedicate their whole life to hiding their mana just to be able to fool demons, which is quite insane when you think about it : Frieren has sacrificed years upon years of growth just to be able to trick demons.
@@firestrike42 And mages do think the same. Suppressing your mana and hiding you talent is weird. They take pleasure in strenghening their skills, searching for powerful spells, they don't understand why you'd canter to basic/boring spells and hiding who you are when there so much magic to learn and developp. Why learn spells if you don't use it ? Message is that Frieren decided/realised that spells helping in the daily life are more important than fighting. That what her practice revolves around. I like Frieren's subtext.

It was such a cool reveal to know that, despite what she said about suppressing mana being useless, Serie is actually suppressing her gargantuan mana as well AND the only person to ever catch on is Fern.
Having not read the rest of the manga i think serie means frieren isnt strong enough to need suppressing her mana , unlike her who would basically ko everyone by her presence like shanks
There's others that know, ya boy denken knows that serie is suppressing her mana s well. Frieren obviously knows as well. There's a couple others as well.
It's amazing that it was because of Freiren that Heiter thought Fern to also suppress her mana at a very young age. Heiter knew that it will also be beneficial to Fern if she also suppresses her mana constantly just like Freiren. The foretelling was superb!
In this context it kinda is, cuz she could've devoted her life to increasing the amount of mana she has, which would've raised her mana levels near to those of Serie, but instead, she developed the ability to suppress mana just to kill demons, cuz for them, it's unnatural to suppress mana since their social standig is defined by the amount of mana they have, so its a pretty impractical skill for demons to practice or even think about. Which is why they never see Frieren coming.
The crazy part is I bet plenty of demons have had the same revelation as Lügner but in the same position as him, when it's already too late to adapt. But there's a reason she's Frieren the Slayer after all. The amount of techniques she has on top of that trump card make her an absolute monster. She's so damn cool.
Frieren gave him what he truly wanted that even Lernen himself didn't know. It is not doing something remarkable to be noticed by Serie, but to be ingrained on her mind. Frieren said Serie never forgets about her students and to that Lernen replied he and Serie are alike as they are both not good with words of affirmation.
Could you imagine a scenario where Frieren is sleeping or otherwise incapacitated, and she releases her control unintentionally? Imagine you're just your average low level demon minding your own business, when all of a sudden you feel the equivalent of a small sun appearing a few miles away from you.
I think she can also control it do it while sleeping. It's like practicing breathing techniques in Yoga. First you do it deliberately all day and sometimes return to your usual pattern. But as you practice everyday, your default breathing pattern changes to the one you were practicing (so it's same during sleep too)
@@Krmiby Still, that would be a nice point in time in which she stops withholding her powers. I want an unleashed Frieren, solely focused on destroying.
I think the reason why no one realizes Serie is surpassing her mana is because the sheer amount of mana she has even then is insane. So even if people noticed a slight fluctuation before they’d overlook it or never consider someone as strong as Serie actively suppressing her mana. It’s also why people figure out Frieren is suppressing her mana, she is such a legend in the world that her total magic power makes no sense for a mage who fought the demon lord.
Lernen noticing Frieren surpressing her mana is far more impressive than Fern noticing Serie surpressing her mana. Fern has been taught about surpressing her mana from Frieren and must have taken active notice of Frierens own mana surpression while Lernen noticed it Frierens surpression instinctively.

Its like a noble choosing to live as a commoner for years. Sometimes a noble might take on a commoner disguise for a purpose, but fully living as one is incomprehensible to them.
It’s cultural blindness. Demons only learn enough about their prey to deceive them. They never bother to learn how they might be deceived. That’s what makes them monsters and not people.
Lernen could not only notice Frieren suppresses her mana. He was able to correctly judge her true mana pool from seeing minute fluctuations in suppressed mana. The dude is a beast.
She literally does. That’s the whole point of the show. It broke her heart to realize she was too slow to notice the man she admired loved her, and she in turn loved him too. She spends the rest of her practically immortal life remembering specifically him (and their friends), where as she contently left Flamme in the past. I think that speaks volumes in an immortal’s perspective, where a forgetting spell would be so much easier than remembering the pain of realizing too late.
and that is what seerie has become. Frieren is not at that level yet. Frieren is just lucky to encounter himmel co and fern co. Otherwise she would become another seerie
Funny how everything Serie thinks is useless is what birthed the hero and the party as well as destroyed the demon king with uncounted other powerful demons.
Can you imagine if she does not suppress her mana? You have seen here mana field in its natural state when she confronted Aura. If she does not suppress, then every mage within a 2 miles would know a powerful mage is coming. Same goes for Serie. At their level, it is a necessity not an option.
Yes, Serie is also suppressing her mana. Fern is, too. This video is solely about Frieren's own mana suppression being discovered, however. Edit: I am aware that there are many other mages who cloak their mana output, but the point remains that this video is solely about Frieren's.

dang, the scene with heiter gives me shivers because serie is right. just as how demons can never fathom being lied to about something as crucial as mana supply, elves can never comprehend that the human population is basically moving at supersonic speed compared to them. elves live long, but, quite literally, "look how much time they need to mimic a fraction of our power" i love media that exemplifies the stengths of humans. we are also a specie among elves, demons, and what not in fantasy settings. surely we have our own advantages :)
Lerne began his apprentice with Serie as a boy. Now an old man, thinks he was never an accomplished mage. He assumed she'd forget him soon after his death a mediocre mage. Kind of sad he doesn't understand how elves memory works, and how proud Serie was of mastery of mana detection that he causally preformed a feat only the all powerful lord of demons was previously capable of.
I had that experience with a pirate captain in D&D after we outmaneuvered him. "All right, I surrender. Four on one just ain't fair." "I was not aware it had to be fair."
Crossover-wise in 'Tensura: Isekai Memories', Rimuru Tempest could tell that Frieren is holding back her true power, as well as the Demon Lords of that world.... though Frieren could intelligently tell that Rimuru is intently holding back info of what he actually is to her.
As a gamer I kind of do the same thing. I often dont equip perks or flamboyant equips that shows off that im special or been grinding or playing a lot. Usually preferring to appear as plain Jane as I can because aesthetically I prefer non-showey effects and equips, and prefer plainness or dresses. My favorite Mario Kart equips are the basic default frame, default wheels, default glider, even though stat-wise its a detriment to me, because i like the look of a default kart more than I like any of the more flamboyant or effective sets. So if I was a mage in that world, Id probably constantly be mana supressing.
Its funny that only Demons cheat or use dirty tricks to win battles. But when someone did it to them they cry and that isn't fair 😂... Its like defeating a hacker in a game and they'll cry soo much
Frieren keeps saying she’s lived for 1000 years which isn’t inherently wrong, but that’s how long since she was found by Flamme. Given that she looks like she’s in her mid-late 20’s during her journey and she looks like a teenager when Flamme finds her, I think it would be accurate to assume that Frieren is somewhere in the region of 2500-3000 years old in total now
I think to suppress your mana in the world of Frieren, is like to wear a level 99 armor. But in order to fool your foes you made it invisible. So to them you only be running around in your underwear.
therefore... identifying if someone is surpressing their mana was also a skill because the rest of Lerner colleagues didnt even recognized it. It also show how skillfull is Heiter :D
Heiter is skilled to some extent but I think it has to do more with their 10 years of journeying together that he has bound to have seen the oddities in Freiren's mana or a couple fluctuations during some intense moments when Freiren couldn't have focused on suppression. Heiter isn't that skilled compared to the Serie's disciple who saw through it at first glance.

The most surprising here isn't that she is suppressing her mana, its the fact that she is part of the party that killed the demon king yet these demons don't know her😂
Here were are given a small glimpse at Hitler power as a mage. As a human, after 10 years, saw the mana suppression - compare that to Aura who lived 500 years and saw no change in 50; remember demons are acutely aware of mana manipulation, almost precisely. Besides headpets, he was the one who created her staff *_AND_* taught her the offensive spell Zoltrek. The anime failed to give this contribution to Hitler, mainly giving most praise and memories to Himmler Edit: *_HEITER and HIMMEL_* God damn autocorrect doesn’t recognize those character names but definitely recognizes those…
Heiter didn't actually know. Himmel is the one that knew and told him. Himmel always knew. Himmel is way stronger than anyone knows but I think the show will expand on that soon.
No one really understands just how INSANE heiter seeing Frierens mana is suppressed. This man never got special training, and was definitely weaker than frieren when they started their journey together. This means that even though he was at a MUCH later stage in his life, without any sort of training earlier on - he reached a point at which he could detect somthing that only the Demon King and Lernen(Fern and Syrie) could see. He is GOAT.
So basically, Serie, Lernen, demon king, Fern and possibly Methode(since she’s good at detecting mana despite clone Fern suppressing her mana) Knows she’s hiding her mana? (What bout Himmel and Aisen ?)

Frieren specialized in demon slaying basically all her ability counter demon so bad that in the manga she event crack the gold curse At current era Fern as frieren apprentice is great at controlling mana and detecting it, surpass most of all mage
You know Serie does have a point. Neither she nor Frieren need deception to win against demons, it just makes it a little funnier. It hasn't really gotten Frieren anything substantial so far. The Demon King saw through it at the time and now that she is even more powerful, she just got to trick a demon into defeat that she would have easily beaten in a fight anyway. Fern profits from it because compared to the elves and demons she is weak and in learning. But between the big girls there is scarcely a point anymore. They are gods walking the world.
when Frieren was not as strong, supressing her mana helps her win against demons. When Frieren is strong af, supressing her mana lures demon to her so she can unalive them. Demons would never show up near her if they detect her massive mana pool.

Little precision on that :
it's not just simply hiding one's mana that is a strategy against demons, it's doing it so much than it becomes second nature.
She's learned mind shattering powerful ones, but she revels in simplicity, practicality. Fighting isn't what she wants, it doesn't make her happy, but travelling and helping people do. That what her practice revolves around. I like Frieren's subtext.
@@firestrike42 You can see an example of that when Flamme was rescuing Frieren the first time they met, they were ambushed by demon mages, the demons were suppressing their mana to land a sneak attack until they noticed their targets were also a mages, so they decided to show themselves and be cocky, a proper thing for a demon to do as they thought they had more mana, and of course, they got literally blasted to smithereens in one single attack by Flamme because of that cockiness.
@@jairo8746 a little correction in the end they revealed themselves moments before the attack because they have pride demanding they show their true might over other mages it's not a matter of them being stronger necessarily but that they are mages
Unrelated but,
Serie remembering her students is one of the most, if not the most heartwarming scene i have ever seen in anime.
"That's unfair" said the guy who's entire species focuses on deceiving the other
"You're a disgrace to all mages"
If being a renowned mage means being where you are now, on the ground about to die, then I'll take being a disgrace any day.
"Hang on, that ain't fair."
"I was not aware it had to be fair."
Lying to face is fair while hiding power isn't, XD

Why not fren if fern shaped?
Wait, dang, no I just connected the dots on how great potential fern has when series saw her, like i thought it was good and all, but when compared to series saying only the demon lord able to see frierens true mana, I finally understand how special fern is

"That is, until this moment, Lernen" dude, what a compliment.
1:30 the ability to sense the mana flux from frieren as Heiter is actually insane, if he met with Serie she would've 100% taken him in as her student.
Now you made me imagine what would Heiter say to Serie since he is a devout believer of the Goddess.
Would be awesome to see Heiter shut her down.
Heiter couldn't tell when he first met her though (he really thought he had five times her mana in their first encounter), he only realized after years of hanging out with her. Contrast that with Lernen and Fern who both just glanced at someone and immediately realized it.
@@giantWario it's not like that with Fern she was a child when she met frieren she got to learn from Frieren all the way up to her teens/nearing adult hood Frieren taught her everything her mentor taught her that's why Fern is able to have more potential/experience than the above average mage like Denken, Fern knows her ways and follows orders from Frieren with excellent execution/follow ups.

@@Potato-wz4keNo? Even her student didn’t notice the fluctuation and only Fern, who was directly taught by Friren, noticed it.
It's amazing that it was because of Freiren that Heiter thought Fern to also suppress her mana at a very young age. Heiter knew that it will also be beneficial to Fern if she also suppresses her mana constantly just like Freiren. The foretelling was superb!
Freiren barely even noticed baby Fern's mana at the time when she meet her, so yes, Fern have always been hiding her mana

@@ripLunarBirdCLHIt's rare to see another Jingles watcher out in the wild.
For a 1 on 1 fight, or small scale fights, it kind of is.
"You're a disgrace to all mages."
Fern: "Cry about it."
Still feel kinda sorry for Lernen
Frieren gave him what he truly wanted that even Lernen himself didn't know. It is not doing something remarkable to be noticed by Serie, but to be ingrained on her mind. Frieren said Serie never forgets about her students and to that Lernen replied he and Serie are alike as they are both not good with words of affirmation.
The level of praise Serie casually dished out in that scene is astounding.

@@Krmiby yes, she can - this has been established. My point was just purely hypothetical.
@@Krmiby Still, that would be a nice point in time in which she stops withholding her powers. I want an unleashed Frieren, solely focused on destroying.
Funny thing is serie is also constantly suppressing her mana but because it's so large, her suppressed manaflow looks like she's letting it all out
I think the reason why no one realizes Serie is surpassing her mana is because the sheer amount of mana she has even then is insane.
Lernan's situation still bums me out. He's finally reached the door to mastery of magic by being able to notice that suppressed mana, but he's literally too old to cross the threshold now. 😢
As a wise man one said:
Mana suppression is like holding in your poop
These elves are gross..
Mana suppression is an active skill that Frieren basically turned into a passive skill

*Fern:* Then there’s no incentive for me to fight fair now, is there?

Fact that demons can’t fathom the concept of suppressing mana
It's like girl who have bough nice clothes but only wear a baggy and ugly one. It's unthinkable for those who value such things and treat them as sign of status
@@TheDarshes that maybe works for materialistic people but not regular peeps that can see those can be comfy.
To the average person it would be like using makeup to add severe acne and uneven skin. I would never look at someone and wonder this at all.
they can do it, but only do it sometimes and not for a long time, if it only until they reach their victim, like when flamme save frieren, and 3 demons appeared, flamme only noticed them when they appear because they were supressing their mana, but they always show off in front of their enemies, but flamme still maintain her mana aura lower to have the chance to kill those 3 demons in a single hit.
Frieren seems like the type of girl that would break everyone's heart cause she just doesn't care, and she'll outlive them all anyway.
Calling a mage a sham for suppressing their mana is like demon talking about familial connection, so I guess that's fair.
Fern also detected how Serie has mana fluctuations
Funny how everything Serie thinks is useless is what birthed the hero and the party as well as destroyed the demon king with uncounted other powerful demons.
It's impressive that demon was able to piece it together, considering demons can't even fathom suppressing your mana your entire life
Heiter being able to recognize she's suppresing her mana is quite commendable
The irony of Luegner complaining about being deceived...
I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the best anime between 2020 and 2030
Can you imagine if she does not suppress her mana? You have seen here mana field in its natural state when she confronted Aura. If she does not suppress, then every mage within a 2 miles would know a powerful mage is coming. Same goes for Serie. At their level, it is a necessity not an option.
Serie suppressed Mana is the same as Freiren unsuppressed Mana.
Freiren is terrifying because of her sheer power. Serie is more than her.
Aura was unfortunate to encounter Frieren the Low Tier Mage
Isn’t Serie also suppressing her mana somewhat as Fern was the only one who noticed?
Yes, Serie is also suppressing her mana. Fern is, too.
This video is solely about Frieren's own mana suppression being discovered, however.

Himmel also know. however in his case it is more like a gut feeling.
dang, the scene with heiter gives me shivers because serie is right. just as how demons can never fathom being lied to about something as crucial as mana supply, elves can never comprehend that the human population is basically moving at supersonic speed compared to them. elves live long, but, quite literally, "look how much time they need to mimic a fraction of our power"
i love media that exemplifies the stengths of humans. we are also a specie among elves, demons, and what not in fantasy settings. surely we have our own advantages :)
Lerne began his apprentice with Serie as a boy. Now an old man, thinks he was never an accomplished mage. He assumed she'd forget him soon after his death a mediocre mage. Kind of sad he doesn't understand how elves memory works, and how proud Serie was of mastery of mana detection that he causally preformed a feat only the all powerful lord of demons was previously capable of.
it's always funny when evil tricksters like demons complain about the other people not playing 'fair'

Given that she looks like she’s in her mid-late 20’s during her journey and she looks like a teenager when Flamme finds her, I think it would be accurate to assume that Frieren is somewhere in the region of 2500-3000 years old in total now

Episode 11, near the end of the episode.
Frieren: "Hmm hmm."
As her mentor pointed out that hiding your man will make the demons think you’re not a threat. When she fought arua she told her if you attacked me with all your forces, I might’ve been in trouble. She was so overconfident she didn’t bother because she thought she would win immediately.
I think lernen just guessed though, even if it was an educated guess I don't think he saw the literal fluctuation. Or else he would have seen series.
