It almost feels like this set is sort of reverse engineered: first the designers came up with as many creative building techniques and part usages they could think of, then they designed a building around all of those. Solutions looking for a problem, but in an awesome way. For a Lego designer to be allowed to work on sets like this must be the ultimate reward....
If you want to learn more about the designing process of this set in particular, the designer (Markus Rollbühler) did an interview with New Elementary, might be worth checking out.
actually I find it more repetive than it seems, whole base section is rather plain build, with the same techniques for each building, city docks are much more diverse, but the worst thing about this set is easy dissasembly and it feels more flimsy than original city, also putting top of the museum is a nightmare. great set, but it's still least fav out of this three.
@@Px4164 I agree with you. I love the set, but building it felt more like a chore to me. All those little cramped up rooms with millions of tiny pieces. And for some reason everything feels so... fragile? I don't even want to disassemble it. Also, 66 stickers, ugh. I have the city and the docks as well, and IMO they were a lot more fun to build and look better.

I probably watched this at least 4 times, in addition to watching the build stream. This provided me with enough information and detail that I felt certain that I would be happy with what is admittedly a large outlay of cash. I subsequently bought the set, and have to say that I absolutely love it. I have a few bags to go, as I'm stretching out the build, but it has been a veritable parade of delights and surprises from the start. It's worth noting that I have no history with the Ninjago theme. So thank you for being the one to provide me with the entry point to this wonderful set.

Yeah this set is awesome. I missed out on the docks and all the stores don't have it in stock now so they're being resold for over 800 which kinda sucks but hopefully I'll be able to get this set

Jang, thanks for the review. I caught the tail end of your livestream Saturday night. It was cool watching this build. One Lego youtube suggestion a month ago caught my eye, I clicked on it, and got all caught up in Lego again. In the late 90's I bought a Lego train set, next thing I know, a started collecting Lego city sets along with the airport shuttle set. Several years later I gave those sets to my nephews as I had no space for them any longer. Now, I have the space and I'm starting to collect sets once again. It's your channel along with several others that have rekindled that love for Lego and I so appreciate that! I've subscribed and I'm looking forward to more videos on your channel.
The Cheesslope is also a reference to a designer who was known for his building techniques. The orange helmet and the roller skates represents the elemental master of shapeshifting. She is the last elemental master that has not yet been as a minifigure. Well done, keep it up 👍
I'm not remotely a Ninjago fan, but I bought all three of the large Ninjago City sets. I plan to remove some of the more fantastical features and direct Ninjago references, and then set them up as an offshore East Asian island away from my regular city. The architecture is not too far removed from real life examples like the ramshackle high rises of Kowloon Walled City.
I like the colours and love the museum, Chen’s noodle house and Ronin’s shop. Really feel like it needed better minifigure access and the minifigures could’ve been much better. Loved the review.
I put this set together in three days and it was one of the most enjoyable builds I've had. The set is so packed of love and detail, creative part usages and just amazingly fun connections that I can barely even believe it. The Ninjago City line has proven to be my favorite in all of Lego. Standing this next to the original Ninjago City and the Docks creates this perfect visage of the beautiful landscape that the design team wanted and I'll forever cherish being able to have all three together.
@@TheCoolFactor Hahah so close... 91 GB! I tried higher-bitrate recording again for awhile early in the season and it just wasn't worth it. No normal hugefig could visually tell the difference, but my hard drives sure could.

Personally I prefer Ninjago City and Docks just because the colours are a bit more realistic. More muted tans, greys, browns, blues etc with bright and neon accents whereas this is all non stop colour everywhere you look Cool set though
Hey Jang! I love your reviews. The quality of the filming and narration is astounding. However, I do have a real criticism, one that has been floating around for a while in my head. When you're reviewing a larger set such as this one a lot of the time I find myself wishing for more context - not with information but rather physical context. Where are things and buildings in relation for one another. Your closeup shots are remarkable and done greatly, but there is a lack of some wide shots of the floors to help me understand the placement of parts of the set. I hope you will be able to read this and maybe take something from it.
I absolutely love all the little builds with interesting uncommon part usage. I've always liked small minifigure scale builds with a good amount of detail and I'm really glad to see LEGO doing them more and providing more and more new extremely useful parts. I also love to see LEGO bringing out new colours for parts that have been locked to a single colour for years such as all the recoloured minifigure utensils.
Wow, this set is really impressive! I love all the little details and references, especially in the museum and in the apartments with the replica Lego sets which are so simple and perfect! That window treasure chest technique is absolutely brilliant. Very impressed by that. And that arcade cabinet! The roofs, the robot, so much more. This set is truly a masterclass of lego design
This set seems more than just a giant celebration of the success of Ninjago to me. It is also a tribute to the various themes, current and past, with the use of all the different unique building techniques and part usages as well as the little references on the signs, that without which Ninjago wouldn't exist today. It is a true testament to the concept of Lego as a toy and a company, being so adaptable and inspiring.
I appreciate your objectivity and honesty when reviewing sets. I have done a couple of builds that you have reviewed and have found that some of the insights that you give during your reviews have helped my builds go much smoother than it would have gone otherwise. On this particular one I got to bag 6 and towards the end I found myself short a 1x8 dark red brown plate and seemed to have an extra 1x6 dark red brown tile. Normally I would have taken that section back apart and simply rebuilt it (because I do make mistakes from time to time), but a 1x6 tile is an unusual piece to get an extra of and you mentioned that you had a wrong piece left over also so I didn't panic. I subbed out the best I could. I didn't have any 1x8 plates free and no dark red brown so I put a 1x6 and 1x2 black plate in there so that the angled corner would line up properly when the building was closed up. and also so that I could keep building because bag 6 is very early in this build. I wanted to thank you for this review and also for your Porsche 911 review. I bought that on the strength of your review and didn't regret it one bit. Thank you for all of your useful content. Honestly I didn’t even know that there was a Trolls lego theme till you said lol. But it was great to see Clutch honored here, especially since he was the first Lego thing besides Star Wars I really liked. Personally I wish that honestly they went back to the old styles for the legacy sets, because they’re just so iconic and I am not a big fan of some of the character designs. But still a great nonetheless. If the new modular for 2022 doesn’t impress me I know what set I’m getting lol.
It was on page 39, of this great and enjoyible set, that i started to laugh out loud uncontrolably. Nobody understood it, becouse i had a smile on my face sinds i bought this set... But it was great to see Clutch honored here, especially since he was the first Lego thing besides Star Wars I really liked. Personally I wish that honestly they went back to the old styles for the legacy sets, because they’re just so iconic and I am not a big fan of some of the character designs. But still a great nonetheless. If the new modular for 2022 doesn’t impress me I know what set I’m getting lol.
It was on page 39, of this great and enjoyible set, that i started to laugh out loud uncontrolably. Nobody understood it, becouse i had a smile on my face sinds i bought this set... But there it was... on page 39... the magicle, mayestic, owesome and holly PINK CONE!! Thanks for making my day Jang and thank you for this great revieuw. 😁

I saw the reveal pictures for this set and even though I loved what I was seeing I refrained from looking too much into it because I knew Jang was going to eventually give an in depth, satisfying, and entertaining video about it. Did not disappoint!
