NASCAR Cup Series POSTRACE INTERVIEWS: Grant Park 220 | 7/2/23 | Motorsports on NBC
/ motorsportsonnbc - Спорт
So to recap: Van Gisbergen has never driven a NASCAR, new team / Crew Chief / learns the terminology and rules for NASCAR, has to drive on the other side of the car, opposite feet for the pedals and has to shift with the other hand. Soaking wet conditions for a lot of the race, then puts the hammer down and drives it to the front and the WIN! Bravo sir, bravo. 👏
He was absolutely fantastic, however the pedals are the same in both left and righthand drive. It's the seating position and the hand he's shifting with that are different. Which is still crazy.
Amazing talented driver for sure, but there is nothing that can take the place of EXPERIENCE and confidence. As a winner of 80+ races and 2x Champion, and with nothing to lose as it was his first race, he gave it his all. . . . but it starts with pure talent and racing ability, and that he has.
@@esciteach7997 3x Champion I believe!
A drivers a driver no matter what you put them in.
Pedals still the same order " clutch, brake, accelerator " but shifting with different hand
Shane van gisbergen was a full second faster than any other driver at the end there. Unbelievable performance and statement. Trackhouse winning at all levels
yup; great also for Justin Marks who dreams big.
how was he so fast at the end? you reckon his tyres? because 1 second is too big to be a skill gap, lol, unless he is THAT good.
Old tires vs older tires plus talent wins again. He was the perfect man for a street race hope he gets another race lets see how he does on the ovals
@@multitablez7825 Manage the tyres well throughout the race, then late pit for a fresh set to burn up is kinda classic Supercars strategy.
@@multitablez7825 he had 16 laps less on his tires, so that no doubt had a lot to do with it. However, the Kiwi is smooth as they get. You don't win 80 supercar races without a lot of talent! Congratulations!!!
When I saw this man heel toe'n in a cup car I knew he was a different breed
The Motorsport talent in Australia/NZ is insane, between SVG, Piastri, Ricciardo, Power, Dixon, McLaughlin, Lawson, etc
Great stuff
@d-marie
True, top tier talent in 4 Motorsport categories
Let's not forget Hartley LeMans champ
have a rethink on that one
KIWI's can fly...
SVG certainly can!
He'll Yeah!
He's pretty good in the wet👍 all those wet Karting days paying off 😜
Haha
Good call!
SVG spoke about how the drivers showed respect many times. Fans should show respect to each other as well with their comments.
This is so cool, everyone in aussie and NZ are talking about Nascar!
For the Guys saying Put him in an oval and let's see how he does,
Well I compete in Rally here in New Zealand and we thought exactly the same thing when he entered that, and well he Destroyed it at that as well, He really is just a massive talent
FYI he had more Oval experience than Rally when he did his first Rally and he crushed it. I had to sit next to him in the Rally Novice Briefing, Such a great guy.
I'll second that.
"Had" to sit by him in the briefing....or "got" to sit by him?!!!
Hes pretty handy sprintcars as well.
Let’s put a NASCAR Cup Series champion in the Bathurst 1000 💥
Lol how's that going go when they struggle on road course let alone a closed track like Bathurst
@roblapouple7552 also gotta worry about the wildlife crossing in front of a race car.
I nominate Tony Stewart!!!
You gotta realise indycar multiple winners Alex Rossi and James Hinchcliffe attempted bathurst and were backmarkers who couldn't keep up
@ACougarSwagnumI guess u could say same thing about any super car driver attempting to race against the cup drivers on an oval. Both are different skill sets and both deserve respect for their respective skills
The Giz was like a circling shark in the first half of that race, just sitting comfy in 3rd or 4th watching the action. Then he got bumped back to 18th and went on a feeding frenzy. That was some drive.
I think Supercars and NASCAR should do a deal where cup series drivers come down for a race on the mountain in supercars and have supercar drivers go over there and try a roundy round race in cup cars
That is definately something i would like to see.
It would be like an Agatha Christie novel. Death on the mountain
God I would love to see that.
nascar turning into indycar, I am here for it! Congrats SVG!
Na, there are still boring 1.5miles track.
I'm SO here for it.
Yup; great also for Justin Marks who dreams big.
Nah, most people watch NASCAR for the spectacular 200mph wrecks; still need the oval superspeedways for that.
@@live2thefullest617 Superspeedway and short tracks are fun to watch on TV and live, and Pocono. Other oval are trash.
I haven't watched NASCAR, or the Supercars for a few years (Since the Commodore/Falcon rivalry stopped). I love how these cars can crunch the barriers, reverse out and keep going. I think I'll definitely start to watch some more NASCAR events. It was a great show.
Proud Aussie and Kiwi Right now ! 🇦🇺🇦🇺
We need one street race every year. The race blew all expectations out of the water
Both Nascar and V8 Supercars are great series. I was hoping V8SC would take off in the US after the Texas race years ago.
Well they are not v8s anymore. They are Yeats ahead mentality. No way Texas was ready then
@amfk8079 what's not V8's anymore?
@@TommyToboggan611they are 100% v8s still
The series is no longer called "V8 Supercars", but they do still use V8 engines.
SVG just sold a few million dollars in local tourism for En-Zed.
Watched this live. SVG made history in Chicago.. my city. 😊 congratulations to him. I really thought Bell had it. But, sadly he got caught in the middle of the wreck
Well done SVG!! You are the man!!!! 🇦🇺

@@LawsonBrown123 I know.
Congrats Shane on your first NASCAR win
and Justin Marks
That was an enjoyable race and so awesome for SVG getting the win, he drove a superb race for Trackhouse.
It was really was
Congratulations Shane !!! 🏆🏁
Kyb and Larson had good things to say about him. I heard he was using the old heel-toe method like Ricky Rudd and Darrell Waltrip used to do. 👍
It was perhaps not as beneficial to do it back then (although Ricky Rudd and DW were accomplished in their own right), but the way these cars drive compared to those old beasts is totally different, and very few teams seem to have fully grasped how to make the most of it. I can guarantee you there's going to be some guys trying the heel-toe method now.
SVG was awesome to watch.
Been following all forms of motorsports since the late 70's. This is very high on my all-time moments list, if not at the top. First time in 60+ years a debut Cup driver won. What a phenomenal run! Wtg SVG & crew!
feel the same way; and remember to credit Justin Marks, who had a dream/idea . . . . .Awesome race and win
Does '& crew' confuse you @@esciteach7997? Marks is an awesome driver in his own regard. Won a Tran-Am race recently & has won in IMSA too...
It’s 2:45 am here and I just watched the cup race! All I can say is incredible !
The skills learnt in V8 Supercars with their relatively narrow tyres is why SVG's tyres were 16 laps fresher. Nascar drivers don't have much experience with tyre demands on street circuits and it's a skill they will need to develope if they are to be competitive.
best races ive watched so far. Congrats svg!
Love it when a foreigner can come here and spank our guys. Kudos to him! WELL DONE
I guess you could call this a clinic. Not surprising considering he has been running 410 Winged Sprint cars at Western Springs, Australia last year. They seem to be the guys with all the talent. Kyle Larson would know! Being a supercar champ doesn't hurt either.
A great wheel man is a great wheel man. He's also a road course guy in very good equipment. Add to that, the wet track and a totally unique and unknown track for all the drivers. So, all and all, not all that surprising really, though I was quite surprised until I gave it some thought. He deserved the win in my opinion.
Nascar goat resumes: SVG
My man Noah Gragson was in the tire barrier every 5 minutes. I think he needs the mullet back. Ever since he's adapted the Kim Jong Un bowl cut things have went down hill.
That turn 6 became his mortal enemy 😔
He ate more wall than he ate bacon.
the hair cut was necessity as he lost a bet. I love the guy too. He's in year 1 Cup . . . . he's a winner and will do fine
I knew it was the Wendy's car without having to ask
It was a long day what with all the rain showers in the morning and afternoon so the tire barriers were starving so Noah really had no choice but to stick the Wendy's Baconator car headfirst into the tire barriers!!!🙉
Thats awesome for Shane Van Getzmeaburger!
Shane is the Kiwi Dale Sr.
Fight me.
i would had said a Kinser but i'm a dirt track Ozzy
Jim Richards Jr.
The Gismeister strikes again. GGs.
Career Avg Finish: 1
Epic
Love good racing! Some very good drivers here especially realising where you need to change. Respect to all the drivers!
Hot take: shane is one of the greatest drivers of our generation, let him try indycar and if he gets even a podium , ill put him top 3 of this generation , thats how close he is
lol Crew Member in the Back Keeping that Bottle .. Excellent Race, Loved it. Ty NASCAR
SVG = 💥SUPERSTAR 💥‼️
uh, won 80+races and two Championships already. Yup; world wide Superstar for sure.
Great racing on the streets of last night, great points day for Kyle and Cliff as a congratulations to Project 91 at TrackHouse Racing led by champ crew chief Darian Grubb to secure the checkers on the streets of Windy City.
Wonder how SVG will do on an oval? My guess is that’ll take a lot longer to adapt to.
He’s raced in midgets and New Zealand sprint cars so he’s got a bit of oval experience but yeah it’ll definitely take some more adapting
he has also raced Sprint cars, but ovals are whats been putting him off racing Nascar.
Finally nascar change the way racing should be, I love this road street race in Chicago…amazing track. Maybe whoever win’s this year championship, should be give them the opportunity to race in Le Mans…love this track!!
Oh hallelujah Shane V Gisbergen you’re the best better than all the rest.
Nothing is beyond your reach in racing.
he had darian grub as crew chief.. helps a lot there
Exciting race.
Good job everyone
Congratulations Matey!!!!!!!!!
Finally a guy who can drive!
Justin Marks & TrackHouse Racing that was some great racing. Shane deserves another chance. Love this Win 🏆
the shout out to Western Springs Speedway Yo. Og!
Well done SVG!!!! What a legend.
Wild you interviewed the entire top 5 except Kyle Busch which did the most during the race good job 😂
Maybe Kyle didn’t want to do an interview
Yes Kyle may have shot out of there, after jumping out of the car.
@@timechanger9162he was in the media center so he interviewed.
He didn't win ? So he didn't want to maybe ? Sad looser .
NBC is going to do their best to interview Kyle he always gives gold I don’t think they didn’t on purpose
nascar should come to the Toronto Canada street course
Pretty interesting race considering the weather, shout out to Bell and Reddick holding up 2/3rds of the event! Hopefully the next street course will have better weather conditions
Really cool !!
Happy for him
SVG just showed how mediocre full-time Nascar drivers are. The fact that they didn’t know about heel-toe braking despite driving cars with three pedals was very telling.
not necessarily. Indy-F1 - Nascar each have their own style of driving, pedals, etc. Doesn't make it mediocre. Over 100 penalties were given out in F1 today for "going too far over the curbs." (and changed the order of finish.) Glad Indy and Nascar don't have that nonsense. Not "mediocre" just different.
@@esciteach7997 The penalty thing was absolutely ridiculous, you’re right about that. But my point is that he stepped in and showed them a major technique to be used in their own cars that’s been around for decades in every other type of three-pedal racing. Ayrton Senna has a cool video of him demonstrating this while wearing dress shoes driving an NSX around Laguna Seca. They’re so stuck in their ways they never bothered to think about how other series are better and more diverse with these kinds of techniques.
I guess Jenson Button was used to his f1 winning ways that he forgotten how to heel toe....
Negative. NASCAR drivers primarily run ovals. No need for heel and toe. And NASCAR teams have been bringing in ringers for road races forever.
I think this more proves how good SVG is, rather than proving anything negative about Nascar drivers. The last decade and a half of the Supercars series were almost completely dominated by Whincup, McLaughlin, and SVG, so if you didn't know any better it would be easy to assume their competition in the series was "mediocre".
And now we are going to have a lot of Nascar experts after watching one race
The guy in second was so full of himself to acknowledge the guy who showed him real racing skills. Give him a taste of V8 Supercars to make him realise. I'm sure he'll be out there finishing last saying "what can you do, it's my first try and they've been doing this for so long." LOL.
Keep blaming the tyres lol .. only reason he was anywhere near the front is because he choose not to get new tyres .. and to claim he was keeping up lol he was losing 1.5 secs a lap .. Shane closed 6 sec on him when he had clear track in front and Shane had to pass everyone ..
Typical young gun with MT Ball Bags.
Looked like a spoilt lil brat ready to fire up at like Dennis Connors 😂
SHANE lets goooo
9:03 LOL the building light says “driving access.”
Shane Van Gisbergen will soon be starting up his own driving school and all NASCAR Cup,Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series drivers and fans like you and me are welcome to enroll!Sign me up mate!!!🤩🙉😻🤘❤️
So proud to see a fellow kiwi doing so well overseas
Great race
For nascar to survive it has to be less like nascar
Man Kyle Larson is a good dude. Hes a mate of SVG's as well so he would be feeling pretty stoked for him.
Happy to see an outsider come in and put on a show like this. Would have like to see what would have happened if NASCAR didn't have to change the length of the race due to weather/lack of light. That change during the race really through a wrench into things, but still happy that SVG won the race 👍👏🏆
Go the Giz! Kiwi Legend!!
Against all odds we kiwis do fly🐐
WAY 2 GO SVG!
Awesome performance
Awesome race and cool win
Miami, Dallas, kc, dc, Des Moines, Denver, Boston, Green Bay, Atlanta, etc ...i can see other cities wanting to host these in the future. this was phenomenal.
Someone knows about the old Des Moines Gran prix. I would love to see that.
Grand Rapids MI
Seattle, WA
Honolulu HI??
Just great SVG a Kiwi
Shane is so impressive today
Great Race
I'm actually quite shocked one of the cars engine broke...racing is just different now days...anyone can get in this car and win...I liked the racing when they were more stock..60s-70s...not million dollar machines with computer this and computer that
SVG 🐐🐐🐐
GJ ! ! !
Impressive good for him.
Is this race uploaded to RUclips?
I think most people forget he had 16 lap better tires and can make most drivers seem like Superman. Enjoyed watching him win though
Wouldnt have mattered if he didnt. His heel and toe technique saves tyres. He races street circuits all the time and they are demanding on tyre wear so the V8 Super car guys know how to preserve them.
He gave those guy's a lesson on how to drive a street/road course.
I hope the rest of them learned something and whatever happens don't let Hendrick hire him. That would SUCK!!!
Project 91 is ELITE
We'd even line up to watch him race a shopping cart...
WOW ! Gizzie who said kiwis can't fly!!
Burton butchered Van Gisbergen’s name so bad near the end he just stopped talking! JR kept calling him Gisbergen leaving out the Van 95% of the time, Rick just continues to repeat what others say, every time. A couple times he tried to go out on his own to start talking about something and would just not finish sentences….! I lover the NBC broadcast but Rick has to go. Give it to Jr and let Parker go in the booth. Really impressed with the racing for a street course. Lots of action!
Rick was fine as every time Burton SCREAMED something, which was every comment, Rick was there with a smooth, understandable comment himself. We have to mute the TV b/c of Burton's screaming.
JR was perfectly fine calling him Gisbergen. Van is his middle name there's no hyphen. We call him Gisbergen, Giz, Gizzy, Van Gisbergen. SVG for the dub! 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
😂
Nah it wasn't all that bad. People might stumble on a name they arent used to seeing, especially when you have to talk almost as fast as the cars youre talking about
@@LawsonBrown123 ??? VAN IS NOT A MIDDLE NAME nor is Mc, Mac, Le (as in Charles Le Clerk). Wow. Van means "of" as in of the Gisbergen family" or Von as in the Von Ryan family.
SVG was himself, focussed with his controlled aggression and the guys “racing IQ” is at the genius level. I reckon Kyle Larson would take him to school in a sprint duel though. That would be an awesome spectacle.
So... NASCAR AT VEGAS! just saying.... that would be MENTAL aka AMAZING!
NASCAR at Bathurst?
Kiwi legend.
Sure he was about to shed some tears.
Figured this cuz the cars are similar to v8 super car an it’s a road course congratulations to him but put him on an oval

@@432htz3very true .. let's share him. He's a legend.. and it's sooo good to see him beat the yanks at their own game
Love to see you yanks try to drive Bathurst. You think you're embarrassed now 😳
They’ve sent a few for a go, most didn’t even finish.
“Some full sends” lol
Yo Tony, you best sign this dude
Can we just agree that everyone who hated this race is just set in their old ways and the "if you aint turning left, that aint right" mentality is outdated? I've been a Nascar fan for over 30 years and that street race was one of the best races I've ever seen. SVG kicked A$$ and took names, plain and simple. And yes they do have NASCAR in Australia, and they apprently drive the wrong way 😂.
SVG what a demonstration of your ability, absolutely fantastic… but realise guys that he could not beat Scott McLaughlin in the supercar series for 3 years!!!
Well, that may have been mostly due to the car he was in.
he lives in queensland australia because he racers in au
