I have resorted to shutting down my m1 air everyday now, which I feel helps a lot. Before I was averaging 50GB a day and over time slowly went up 300-400GB a day. Now that I have been shutting my laptop down nightly, the write usage rarely goes over 50GB/day. I know in another video you said that it is probably better to not shutdown your laptop often, but I feel like this is a case you should.
There's a good possibility your write usage decreased due to the recent Apple software updates, not shutting down your computer nightly. However, I have heard some people having to shut down nightly due to the excessive write issue.
Maybe I'm asking for too much and this isn't possible, but what about connecting an external SSD of modest size, say 512GB, and having all caching to be done on THAT SSD, rather than the internal one? Sort of a sacrificial lamb as it were. That way - when that drive does fail - you're only losing the investment of a modestly priced, EXTERNAL drive, rather than a drive that's soldered to your mother board and contains vital files. Is that setting even provided and an option? IF this were an option, and if most data intensive work is done at home in a desktop setup, then maybe the use of that external SSD could be reserved for only using at home, so you don't need to drag it along when using the laptop portably.
Can you have a video detailing the "other" section of the ssd drive and how to see what files can be deleted in the "other" section? It's increasing day by day and I don't know how to clean it up without any other consequences. Thank you

Please, talk about Battery Wear Levels and Battery Calibration. On Some windows laptops (i.e. Lenovo ideapad) if you discharge it down to 0% or charge it up to 100% Battery Wear Level will increase by about 10% and you then will have to Calibrate (discharge fully and charge fully) battery or you will have smaller usable capacity to work with. In addition for reference Asus zenbook doesnot artificially increase Battery Wear levels, So it will be intresting to monitor Battery Wear Levels while you will be conducting experiments with M1 Macbook.
Hello, I am new Mac user and have never used Macs before but what about cache in safari? Do I have to switch them off, cause I sometimes watch videos on RUclips through safari
UPDATE: Actually the thing is, current chrome version doesn't have that flag anymore. That's why chrome will continue to write data to SSD every single time. To test this, I was monitoring activity monitor while watching a 4k video. I saw chrome doesn't write much data to SSD anymore. I think the problem has been fixed. BUT STILL, I can't trust chrome :") cause it's behavior wasn't stable in activity monitor. Lastly, the solution I am applying is I am browsing the internet with chrome only. And when I have to watch a video, I am switching to Safari. (got it from reddit)
I am not doing much (no video or photo editing), and after 3 months and 20 days of use, it's already used 46.7TB. I've started to closely monitor the usage, and the Swap Used under Activity Monitor was showing 0 MB this morning which was all good. But after being away for half an hour, and sleep kicked in, upon resume the M1 Mac, Swap Used is now 600MB!! Looking at the KernelTask written in Disk tab, it was 150MB prior to sleep. After resume, it's written 4GB. What's going on? I'll try not to sleep next and see.

Same here. I think it's related to Spotlight. Did you fixed your problem?
Real, genuine, not trolling question, why do some Mac users keep using other web browsers instead of Safari?
Brilliant video... love the Australian accent my friend.
Lets say you got the MBA for 6 months now, and is at 100% ssd condition… does not make it like almost 50 year’s estimate functional time? I can not see why all the fuss about it.
very helpful video thanks
Please make a video on how to treat the battery if i use my mac in a docking statioin.
It's always connected to the chargeer
Hey Liam, I have a question concerning safari's ram usage: I don't know if you read or heard about it, but there is currently a bug with Disney plus, where it uses practically all Ram available and eventually crash/ safari reloads the page. It's really annoying because it happened literally every 5 to 10 minutes:( Can you help me with that? Greeting from Germany @CreatedLabs
Great video, thank you.
I think that people thinks too much. Because shall iPhone has the same issue to read/write data on its SSD drive? My friend watched the video on the iPhone 6 (32GB) every day, and it had been 5 years, no problem at all but the screen became dark. During this period, he only replaced the batteries several time, until purchased the SE for replacement last year.
Thank you mate!!
Thank's, am I need to turn this off on my safari browser?
I've never heard "cache" pronounced that way before...is it an Aussie thing?
Can you do a video on your desk set up please? Where you go the desk, monitor etc? It looks awesome and I need some inspiration
this is really helpful with my 256gb storage, but do you have a fix for Safari though it's not writing too much on the ssd? I have made changes already for Firefox and Chrome. Thank you
Gonna get a macbook air m1 tommorow, thanks for the tips! Hope i will se how and when to charge it.
What's that macbook stand at 0:01 setup looks dope btw
The command isn't working nor can i locate the option on opera nor chrome. Kindly help someone please.
Great vid. Thank you
Using a safari browser then watching youtube videos is fine?
This does not seem to work any more. I can't find the setting in the menu.
same here :(
This might need to be revised if its in TB's per day and if any reported issue on its failing over certain TBW as it might vary based on chipset die quality one last longer than other
Thank you for your great video. I am planning on buying a m1 mba. I have a question. in a previous video, you said that 8 GB of ram was enough. However in the video I see that you are using 7 GB of ram out of 8 GB with only few apps open. why? Is there something I don't understand?
Oh my God, Apple M chips making PC setup neater & neater!
Safari doesn't cache streaming content to disc like Chromium based browsers so you are fine to leave it as it is.
@@HighwayRamos thank you
So I entered the link you put for the Google chrome one, and it doesn't work on my laptop. Nothing pops up
Well shit I've been watching nothing but 4k youtube videos on 2x speed nearly all day long since January on my 256GB M1 Mac Mini 😥
I cannot find "chrome://flags/#turn-off-streaming-media-caching-always" this on my chrome. What could be the problem? Can anyone help?
UPDATE:
Actually the thing is, current chrome version doesn't have that flag anymore.
