I like collecting CDs because I like to see my collection fill up. It feels much better when it actually takes space and is not just an image on a Spotify playlist

    Man, what a topic!
The main problem today is that we can have everything and pay literally nothing. But when you have too much, you don’t give it the proper time to listen, watch, etc. You don’t get the excitement we used to get.
Waiting in front of a store the day your favorite album was released, finding that horror movie you were looking for so many times, seeing your friends jealous because you found that rare album before them, or simply discovering hidden gems in the music store randomly.
Also, when Spotify/RUclips didn’t exist, it didn’t matter if you liked the album you bought or not. You had to listen to it until the next month when you had enough money to buy something new again, often ending up liking the album. 😂
    I miss those times, goddamn.
P.S. We were born the same year!

      @@roaming740 , sounds like a personal problem, bro . . .
In other words, are you saying that you're unable to sit there and listen to a full album, unless you have to push a button to pop out a CD OR change out a vinyl OR hit stop and open to switch out a tape? You lack enough basic self-control to . . . avoid clicking skip (and thus avoid playing other songs and other albums before the current album is done)? It's one thing you're like, "LOOK, SAM, MY 'ADHD' MEANS I ALWAYS HAVE TO SKIP THIS ONE SONG I HATE!". But that's not what you're saying.
Also, as a sidenote, stop using "ADHD" as an excuse for lack of basic self-control.

I like having physical media because I don't trust companies to store what I paid for. And the reason is that when you pay for digital content, you pay only to license it, not to own it. You pay for them to ALLOW you to listen/watch/read it. But that license can be taken away. Netflix can take your favourite movie down any moment. A band might decide for whatever reason to take their music away from Spotify. Amazon can erase stuff from your Kindle.
Aside from that, wi-fi access isn't always available. Sometimes electricity is out and a book doesn't need to get charged. And all of this without even mentioning the beauty of the object itself.
I'm 7 years older than you, and lived through the last period of the tape swapping era. Those were good times.

I'm a Gen Z'er (an older one, I turn 20 in a month, but still) and I couldn't agree with you more. I inherited a pretty decent sized vinyl collection that I've since added a lot to and also own maybe 30-40 or so CDs. I use streaming services when I'm out and about since I don't own a portable player, but the act of sitting at home by myself listening to a physical copy of an album is so much more intimate, especially with vinyl since every record has its own pops and crackles that add just a drop of character to each one. Also, my grandpa and I used to listen to a lot of these together and the thought of building onto his old collection and someday passing it down to keep the cycle going makes me pretty happy.

I like physical media primarily because I like to own my stuff, and this goes not just for music, but also movies, television shows, anime, and any other forms of entertainment. I like owning that things I enjoy, so I can't be told by a record label or streaming service "oh, you can't listen/watch this because it's not available in your region." And there's also a number of albums that exist that were never on streaming in the first place, such as the Black Faith album from Cancer, which I absolutely adore.

  • @dreamakuma
    @dreamakuma 4 месяца назад +6

We're about the same age and it's eerie how close we share these opinions. I do have my own great reasons for enjoying physical media and I gotta share them.
Putting on a CD, Tape, or record unplugs me from a screen. At 35, I'm outright tired of the news. It is draining that the device I can communicate with also exposes me to so much shit that shouldn't effect my day. Sure I should keep an eye on the world, but it's too much sometimes. So I get off the computer, get off the phone, grab an album I like and that's all that's around me. Sometimes I'll read a book or a comic while the music is going. For however long it is, my music room is peace and it's the only place I am at.
Secondly, shopping at a record store is a borderline religious experience. I enjoy discovering new things and getting a random album from a band I've never heard of and maybe even a genre I might never thought to try. It's not an algorithm seeing what I listen to and just recommending me new bands in the same genre or style(Which is still cool) but there's a chance I get a dud or open myself to finding stuff I'd never consider.
    Great video btw dude.

I'm really happy that you made this video. I'm 27 years old and I buy cd's and prefer to listen music on RUclips. Fun fact; Most CD's being sold today are most of the time rock and metal.
There is a store in Belgium where they sell cd's under every genre. Jazz, classic, pop, every spot is as good as empty, except the spot where the rock and metal CDs are, that spot is PACKED. There are very kind people that recommend each other CD'S and its crazy how in depth they talk about the music. Like "oh that last album was good but at this song they lost their sound and went the commercial route" blah blah. and so on
    It's crazy 🤣

its the same with movies, just going onto netflix and seeing thousands of films you honestly dont feel too connected to and can just click it feels boring and effortless, the pure JOY of owning the dvd/vhs etc and physically being able to look at the art and special features just feels so much more purposeful. Plus a lot of older films (in my personal case, many horror films) just aren't on many streaming platforms at all and physically owning something that is difficult to find in todays day feels sm more special

I was born in 1999. I personally love collecting Physical Media for music and movies. I have a large collection of Vinyl and CDs and I've gotten more into collecting cassettes lately, finding both old school bands and newer underground bands that release cassettes, I find it's fun and adds to the experience of listening to my favourite bands. I still use RUclips an band camp for streaming (I don't like Spotify) but it doesn't feel as fun or impactful as actually picking up and album and setting it up to hear it in full.

  • @FolencioGarcia

For me it's a matter of comfortability. I spend a lot of time in public transport to get to my job and returning home so Spotify and RUclips are straight forward options for me because I can listen to a shitload of albums in a daytime. Also, for the gym it makes it easier.
But, if I really like an album or an artist, I want to have it on a physical format, so I totally endorse your points in the video.

Damn, I love this video. This is a whole lot of why I love physical media in one video, but the bit about albums as a format being a better conveyance of the artist's intent is my favorite part. I still buy vinyl and CDs largely because I think I get more out of listening to an entire album than I do listening to one catchy song. Listening to a song is taking a walk. Listening to an album is going on a journey.

Within the last few years, I've gotten back to collecting up physical media. I used streaming services primarily for a good bit, but if I wanted to listen to say...Headless Cross by Black Sabbath, I was out of luck, because it wasn't on any streaming sites. Not only that, but I love to look for new Black Metal specifically, and I feel like buying the physical media is like getting a small piece of the band. Not only that, but in an age where we don't own the things we buy digitally, I can hold up this Unholy Calamity cassette and say "I own this!" Your point, Sir, about the album being indicative of where the band is in life at that time? Love that. its very true.

  • @AntisaDod

I am exactly the same age like you Farvann and don't know if that's the reason I totally agree with you or not, but I feel the same way regarding music and even video games feels the same way for me. I own around 200 albums mostly on cd's and when I am searching for an album, it means that I want to listen to that album at that moment and don't have to wait until the ads are done like in youtube and stuff, I can touch the case and even remember pretty much when I bought them and how long I have been with them whom I was with during that period of time. Those kind of things may sound dumb but for me it does matter. Like it also takes me back in time and I can say how depressive or happy I was and just memories comes into my head. New technology is fine but not for everything and will never have the same touch as old stuff. I can barely imagine how my grandfather was when listening to his music in the 50's, I think those feelings and memories stays with you until you die.

What I really like to do when buying a new CD is to take the booklet and to read all the lyrics while listening to the song. That always gave me a deeper connection to the band when I realised that the lyrics touched me in any way. My best example for that would be the former german black metal band Eis (or Geist in the good old days)

I just got into collecting CD's and tapes almost accidentally, but once I started I don't regret. I agree with most of your thoughts: owning something physical, not just an image, supporting the artist, treating album as a whole, as a piece of an art, not just another track on "Super-duper best metal 2024 spotify playlist". There is something in it, that tells me this is the right way. And to be honest - if most people do something - I do the opposite, if they're using digital - I go physical. Great Video!

Saving up money to buy a cd and read through the lyrics and enjoy the artwork while listening to the album as a whole is just an experience. I also have mp3 players for convenience, but its starting to bug me that bands are doing more singles and digital releases. I hope the physical album as an artform never dies.

I've got probably 1000, 1100 CDs after a bit over a decade of serious collecting and with my streaming library I listen to roundabout 800 different artists. Some got one album, or at an average something between 10 to 15, but others like Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Frank Zappa and Johnny Cash got 70+ studio and live recordings... That's quite an enormous amount of music I'ld have to purchase. I use streaming, RUclips, bandcamp, my vast array of CDs and I'm thinking about getting into tapes. Therefore I'm trapped in the middle - I'm an avid streamer but most of my own money not needed for living and so on are spent on physical media.

I have the same weird connection (very emotional) with few albums, the first I ever got. The first real physical media I ever got (original stuff, i had few dozens of cassetes I made by recording stuff from radio, just as Farvann did) was a Korn and their "Issues" album. it was a gift from my sister. I was already into more metal stuff bacl then but it was a gift and I loved it, i still love it and enjoy listening to that album using cassete player. The second, my first CD album, was Nile and "Into their darkened shrines". I bought it myself and it is one of my most emotionaly valuable things I own. I cannot agree more - real physical media is more than just music, it is real, hard memory of a moment in time, snapshot of what you felt and loved back then. Digital stuff lack that.

We have a choice these days and I like that. You can use a physical format, a digital format or both.
I'd say circumstances pushed me towards a digital format. No CD store in sight or at least no albums I'd want to own. Before Spotify I had my iPod Schuffle. You couldn't have more than 300 songs there and I had to chose carefully which songs to add. Now that I use Spotify I have discovered a lot more music. I love having multiple playlists.
I have to admit that at the start of this decade I had this mentality "why would you buy physical albums when everything is digital these days". Needless to say I don't think like that anymore. If I have a chance to get my favourite albums I would. Physical media makes music seem more real.
Also I agree that listening to an album is a journey. The same song can sound different to me depending on whether I am listening to it on a album vs the playlist.

I'm 20, and I have a CD collection that I started just a few years ago from scratch. There are several reasons for that:
    1. CD quality is CD quality. Everything else is questionable. Even Tidal serves lossy garbage as lossless when it can.
    2. By buying an album, I'm supporting its creator far more than I would by paying for a subscription service (which I still do, but it's mostly for finding new music).
    3. As you also said, they can remove music from an online service, but they can't remove CDs from my shelf.
    4. CDs are cool and retro to me.
    5. I can put a CD in my player and listen to it without using my computer (which always leads to distractions).
    6. CDs often come with tracks that aren't available on streaming services, and the lyrics booklet is guaranteed to be accurate, unlike online lyrics.
    7. Unlike vinyl, CDs are still convenient to use, sold by most bands, and reasonably affordable, and unlike cassettes, they sound good. Digital also has the advantage of being rippable.

I have been into physical media since I started listening to music.
I bought CDs and ripped the albums on my computer and put them in my MP3-player (now smartphone).
I try to listen to bands that should suit my taste on Spotify, but I tend to get bored very quick. I wonder if that's because the accessibility makes it hard for me to connect with new music.
I went to a physical record store yesterday. I usually buy CDs online, but now I realize it's not the same experience as visiting a physical record store.
A nice song started playing on the speakers, so I asked one of the guys working there what I was listening to.
I left the store with one extra CD (Old Star by Darkthrone).
    I liked that!

Here is the twist though… I just rip them into WMA format at higher bitrate and store then in a second (music dedicated) phone with no SIM card. So I have the convenience and can still que up the entire album or play by genre or my own created playlists. Maybe I’m somewhere in between haha😊

I do love streaming services. Especially since I can download stuff. I take the bus everywhere. With my phone I can have a ton of music, audiobooks, movies, games. Whatever I'm in the mood for. And if I see a recommendation for a band, I can find them and listen to them in seconds.
Bur I also do feel like there is a slight disconnect now. Part of it as you mentioned, the album. It's so easy to just find the song I like and just listen to that. And I find myself doing it more and more. Every now and then I'll find myself looking at the list of songs, and I wonder why I haven't listened to them yet.
I also just don't connect with the music itself as much anymore. If you listed a band who's CD I owned, I can probably talk about the album. I can still have a pretty good idea of how it sounds. And not just the genre, but really hear it in my head. But I probably couldn't tell you about half the albums I listen to now. With jumping from one to the next so much and with so much available, I can just listen and move on. Back when we had to buy an album, actually going to get it, having to constantly put it in, seeing the cover with it in my hand, having to listen all the way through, let alone needing to put money down to get it, I was more mentally invested. And I've been craving that again. Because the only CDs I buy now are ones from shows. I usually try to get a shirt and a CD to support the band. But even those I mostly just rip onto the computer and throw it on my phone, and that's if I can't just download it through the steaming service.
Unfortunately I am in between places right now. My CDs are packed. I don't have room for a sound system. But I am hoping to only be here for another 6 months or so. So I decided to get ahead of the curve, and I actually now have a few albums. Once I can get to someplace more stable, I would love to get some sort of set up where I can just play music and relax. Maybe have a chair for reading with my books nearby so that I'm not reading in bed. And then I won't also have to worry about a roommate that needs attention every 30 minutes if I'm not locked in my room. But I actually really want to connect with the music I listen to again, and I'm thinking this will probably be a great way to do it.
Also, I was also born in 89. So that's fun.

I am a Little bit older then you but I am completely with you. Specially the 3. topic. And to add, due to the point the a band „caged“ themselves for some certain time to a studio and here point where the magic kicks in and some unforgettable stuff gets created!
Also a different point is that you sometime force yourself to here album again and again to understand that record. My example was Manila Road and Crystal logic. I hear so often that this is a great album so I bought it. I know necropolis from the Visigoth cover so I like that but the rest I can’t get into. I have in my head I bought it, I pay money so i have to try it even more. And at one point it kicks in and I understood the album. And then I love it. I think that never happens with streaming.

I really respect your opinion! It’s always nice to see people go the old-school way as far as how they purchase and listen to music. It has a certain charm to it that listening to music on streaming does not have.

Hello. Nice video! I love vinyl Because when I listen to it, I am sure that the player will not receive a message from work. And as you rightly said, the album should be listened to from beginning to end if possible. I have Spotify, but it's more of an earplug on the commute. But when you go on a trip, there is a Walkman and two or three favorite cassettes. Which become even more special with each trip. It is as if you are writing down your travel memories on them. Although only music is recorded there.

While I do use Spotify for the convenience (listen at work etc), and love it for the music recommendations, I also still prefer physical media.
The feeling when you get a new album that you’ve wanted, and play it for the first time. Or when you take out an old favourite, and you can basically hear the music just by holding it in your hand. 🤩

There's only 4 record stores left in my country, so it's rare & expensive to find albums I actually want to buy, but once I get to own it on CD, it elevates my enjoyment & attachment to the album/artist. For some reason, I also find myself listening to the whole album on CD, while on (streaming) music apps I often switch to sth else after a few songs.
I don't think it's possible to buy all music you like on physical media, unless you have much disposable income & devote your life to it, but it is awesome, if you get to own CDs of stuff that means most to you (I recently got such a holy grail).
Tldr: Nothing wrong with listening to music just digitally, but it's nice to get physical albums that mean most to you.

Nothing against streaming networks, but when you mentioned that these also suggest to you music you would probably like... well... I like it better when a friend recommends me something, because that usually doesn't concern a specific genre of metal, but they know me and know what gets me going. Seeing as we're very close in age (I'm two years older) I understand exactly what you're trying to say. I've had my first Judas Priest CD since 1997 and it has become a bit of a family heirloom. :D

I like physical media. I've gotten a nice collection of vinyls over the years, some new, some from 60's, 70's and 80's. Vinyls are especially great, there's always a"hunt" associated with them and the dopamine hit of finding something you were looking for or even weren't looking for but it's a release from you're favorite band or artist, is unlike very little else on Earth. On Bandcamp I'm waiting until Bandcamp Friday (coming up sep 6th!!!) To buy physical media from new artists I've discovered over the past year. I've already got an Igorrr and 2 SunnO))) vinyls, Fit for an Autopsy, Ohio Players, and Redman vinyls in the past year alone. And yeah, setting aside time dedicated to music, with a device dedicated to playing music....there is something intangible there that is beautiful

Last weekend I got the first and only record by 4 Non Blondes on CD on a second hand market for just 1€. I didn't know any of their songs before, except for "What's up", but I gave it try and they are one of my favourite bands now. I think I would have never listened to the full album on a streaming platform. Some months ago, I bought the entire LotR Story as an audio book for just 4€.
I rarely buy any CD's in a regular store anymore because they're to expensive, just from rather unknown artists I stumbled upon to support them, but you will find records of the "big names" on nearly every second hand market.
I was born in 2002 and none of my friends really understands why I still have a MP3-Player instead of paying for Spotify, but it's just a totally different feeling to listen to a full album instead of listening to a playlist on shuffle.

Some physical albums have a story. My 7th Son lp I bought when newly released, had in on the steering wheel of my bike, had to cycle home half an hour and it started to rain. So you try and try and try to keep it dry and I almost succeeded, for one tiny spot halfway the sleeve opening. Dent and it dried up a tear. Now, 35 years later, I still remember me cycling home, trying to save the 25 gulden ( 22,50 Deutschmark at the time, a lot of money for me ) costing record safely home. And the joy or reading the booklets / inner sleeve, checking the sleeve art for Easter eggs, trying to guess the artist, looking at the label itself. We were - and sometimes still are - living the music. And that's why I still buy my cd's, tapes and lp's ( I refuse to call it vinyl, I'm not a bloody hipster ). Streaming is fine to listen to when busy with other things and to keep track of new releases and old discoveries but if possible and I like it and it's not crazy priced I'll buy it.

Interesting fact about cassette tapes - in the past, cassettes contained not only music, but also games - yes, games! So, in order to copy (pirate) a game, it was broadcast on the appropriate wave on the radio, the rest of the city recorded the "broadcast" and could also enjoy their copy :) This is how it was done in the 1990s in Eastern Europe

I fully understand what you're on about, I still kept all my cd's from earlier and can't get rid of them but I do prefer streaming in the car now, and when taking a shower or doing a task somewhere in the house... the randomness of the playlist and discovering new music even that way with smart shuffle is quite okay... that being said, when I wanna take the time to really listen to music I would never use spotify, maybe play a whole album, specific songs I wanna listen to in detail, if I wasn't a minimalist I'd probably buy a retro vinyl player and have myself a whole collection, but that would be totaly contrary to calling myself a minimalist and enjoying being able to move quite easily etc. :), a small whisky collection and 4 guitars and a guitalele is probably the only thing not rly minimalistic in my place but some hobby's are okay to have, but I wouldn't call anyone a boomer or old to prefer vinyl, cd's, taking the time to connect with one specific artist and ignore the fact u could discover a lot more in that same time frame but on a much more shalow level... I'd call it respectfully and interesting, I can go on a one artist/band journey sometimes though, but for me that's more like searching all kinds of youtube videos, listening on spotify on shuffle but only to that specific artist and get to know the songs/albums that way while driving, cycling, ... or just sit down and listen usually searching for more information as well like age, if they already passed away then when and how, former bands they were in, colabs, personal life stuff I stumble on (that being said I also think whatever the artist wants to keep private about themselves, even if that means pretty much everything personal it shouldn't be put out and kept private). All that really gets me close to an artist as well even when it's a different path in a way.

I remember in my youth listening to the music of a CD I had bought just based simply off of the album art and the appeal of the band/album name. I would look at the lyrics in the CD booklet as well as the art, the acknowledgments, etc. as I listened.
It gave so much more importance to the music I was listening to. It's such a different and more satisfying experience than typing in a band name on RUclips Music and listening to a single track to see if the band appeals to me. That's the thing - I didn't specifically spend money to listen to it, so there's less interest in giving it a chance to truly sink in. It's entirely possible I've listened to and written off bands that could have possibly become my favorite band ever simply because there's no feeling of obligation to listen to an entire album all the way through multiple times.

I think we are losing ability to listening to music. As You said many people use it as a background for their activities because it's easy but they end up listening to music only while doing anything else. If we are putting an effort to get an album everything changes. Sadly everything goes "faster" now so it's hard to explain that listening itself is a beautiful activity and it hits very different this way. Yep! 90's boomer here too ;)

Prior to Spotify I discovered new music through RUclips, and before that through friends and going to recocordstores spending hours digging through the shelves and if an albumcover looked interesting giving it a listen before deciding whether or not to buy it.
In a way Spotify (and co) is the new tape-trade of days gone, it gives small artists a chance to find an audience without having to go to a label (with the chance of being turned down). Also without labels artists can work at their own pace, without the pressure of a contract demanding certain numbers of songs and albums to be produced within certain time frames.
