They have shown the server meshing that everyone said was gonna be impossible they now have it working and showed us so I doubt anything can stop em now! short of an apocalypse or at least economic collapse in at least one of the many countries they're developing parts of the game in! and we are talking about the US, UK and Germany which are doing okay enough I'm a bit worried for the American economy, the UK government tried trickle up economics by giving the poor money packages to get by and it worked because the £ has bounced back to full stability from what had been the worst value of the pound after 30 years of stability! so with all that in account lets just say I was losing hope until this years presentation, and i'm not religious but I have faith once again that this game and it's multiplayer counterpart can seal the deal we made as players when we invested our money all those years ago!
I knew it wasn't gonna be a smooth ride or a quick one, like Rome it was built from the ground up and it wasn't built in a day!
Also the way they've done their server meshing is gonna revolutionize the games industry because it makes large scale high quality mmo's like these with physics systems on par with scientific simulations possible we are gonna see a lot more mmo's with simulation level physics, no loading screens and 80-90% universe or game wide crashes!

that is probably what delayed SQ42 so much, them constantly changing things and having to rework core aspects of the game, meant they had to delay the development of SQ42 until some of those core aspects were set into stone.

@@danilooliveira6580 Honestly the opposite is more the case. A LOT of resources have been poured into SQ42 and (for better or worse) they've been pretty hush-hush about S42 progress. But there are a bunch of features that only exist in S42 that have never been ported to the PU for multiple reasons (most of them server-related), so a lot of progress on the game was invisible to players on the MMO side of things. The general idea, though, that making essentially 2 games at once delayed both of them, is basically correct.

By showing that there was MASSIVE interest in space games people started making games big and small all over the place and its been wonderful to have so many options. Astroneer, Cosmoteer, Elite Dangerous, Space Engineers, Everspace 1-2, Hardspace Shipbreaker, Kerbal Space Program, No Mans Sky, Rebel Galaxy, Space Pirates and Zombies, The list goes on and on. I think it's more likely CIG will take on other projects for publishers post Star Citizen... so like 5+ years. As a long time backer of Star Citizen and Squadron 42 this was funny to watch, although I sometimes wanted to scream on the screen if there were misconceptions or false guesses ^^
    Some facts:
    - Squadron 42 is the spiritual succesor to the Wing Commander series fomr the 90, Chris Roberts (the Star Citizen guy) ...is actually the guy who made Wing Commander back in the day (and the intro scene from Lord of War with Nicholas Cage but thats another story).
    - Squadron 42 was the plan BEFORE Star Citizen. They just saw the interest in a new space game was so big they also wanted to make a multiplayer part (in the spirit of the Wing Commander: Privateer and later Freelancer games). With the planet tec they developed they split it up into two separate games already in about 2014, since then the development is parallel, with a focus on Squadron 42.
    - all in there was game engine, no pre-rendered scenes
    - you can land seamlessly without any loading screen in Star Citizens alpha for years now so thats really not a new feature for a Star Citizen backer ^^ (WARNING: if you play the alpha for about two weeks you get so used to it that other games then feel really really small...)
    - they already scripted Squadron 42 part 2 and part 3
    - the pilot in the beginning which you hear bnut not see is no other than Henry Cavill, who saw the developement in around 2015-ishe and tasked his manager to reach out to Chris Roberts to play a role in the game. It worked out, he plays one pilot now in the game.
    - this is the first QUADRUPLE A game proving that the normal gaming industry with publishers is way behind what would be technically possible with games
    - the campaign will have around 40 hours of gameplay (around 28 chapters / levels).
    - I recommend to watch the Star Citizen official channel on youtrube and see the CitizenCon 2023 panel videos, especially the tech demo about StarEngine and server meshing. Then its clear why Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are lightyears advanced compared to current games.
The star Citizen community is very welcoming, there is an official guide system where players guide you with your first steps in the universe and the current price for Squadron 42 is about 45 dollars. not too expensive I d say.
Cant help it but to all the haters: its gonna be good, we told you so ^^

its open freeform, do the tutorial learn the absolute basics and start picking up missions as you explore you find POI that have things to do also, there is mining and cargo hauling, piracy and criminal activities, a prison system if you fail in your criminal enterprises. the graphics are beautiful but even on a great pc can get choppy walking through some of the cities, i rarely experience crashes or 30k since the latest update, but server fps can be quite low occasionally resulting in lackluster ai behavior like tposing or oblivious hostiles on foot, i have not seen the same effect on enemy craft they still do an ok job of fighting back. as it stands currently in the PU i would justify the price tag of the starter ship package of 45$ you can definitely find that value and more in what is currently in the game. and the best experiences i have ever had in any game had nothing to do with any official missions ingame, i bought in game the 890 jump space yacht/luxery cruise liner which has zero purpose currently, my entire org dressed up in suits and we toured the system RPing the Elite industialist oligarchy and bestowing upon new commers of the game a free trip to any landmark or station they would like to see, we had a blast and made a ton of ingame acquaintances and many new members to the org. that being said i still tend to get burned out about 6months of playing until the next major patch as currently it has not achieved imo enough content to be a forever game

It honestly feels like it is, and I've played Star Citizen for awhile. The PU has so many bugs and crashes all the time. You lose your inventory when you're playing, which if you're doing hauls, means a ton of money. If I'm mining I might lose my Prospector or it gets stuck in the middle of nowhere with Quant in it and explodes. Or my mining laser stops working randomly. Or the server hiccups and a quant rock explodes me and my vehicle all because I had the laser on when the server went funky. Or, the only way to test the new content is locked behind buying vehicles that can only be purchased with money, like salvaging. If I do bunker runs, my inventory can get bugged when looting and then I can't pick up anything or take anything out of my inventory.
Don't get me wrong, the game LOOKS AMAZING. Flying feels nice, your ships have weight to them, especially in atmosphere. The gunplay is great. But the little things break the game, and it is server wide.
It seems like they put a lot of effort into the game, and the beauty and scale of the game shows it, but the engine they're running on was never designed to be for an MMO, and they're too deep into it to start all over. They were forced to develop all this tech so they could increase their max server limit from 50 to 100 players. They are doing a lot to make the game feel great, but like everyone is saying, Squadron 42 took up 80% of their dev team. Star Citizen itself has basically been on hold until they finish Squadron 42, with minor adjustments for PU. And with the servers basically in the same state as when I started playing, I can't go back until I see that the servers are no longer 30king over and over, every hour or so.
I've had too many times where I get on the PU, suit up, ship out, get to my destination for the server to 30k, and then log out, log in, suit up again at station, recover my ship, ship out, only for the server to 30k again, not even 30 minutes onto the new server. Sometimes it will be 4 hours before it happens, sometimes they've nailed it on a new patch and it doesn't happen at all for a few days. But the constant threat of, restart everything you have been doing with so much setup keeps me from coming back until they fix the server issues. Not to mention the lack of real content for the game other than "earn money to buy ships" with no other real features.

The crazy thing is that they did full mocap for all the animations, the cutscenes, and the combat animations are from real soldiers. So there are several Bengals overall, I think there are 3 known of lorewise, not many of them, the rest of the ships are Idris / Javelin capital ships which will be available in SC after SQ42 launches, you can already fight them or clip through them to steal the NPC ships right now, but they have no real interior yet there, unless you go to the event which lets you tour the inside of one partially

It's even common for people to spend many thousands on building their sim setup, some even going so far as to build entire rooms to look like the cockpit of ships they like.
As a member of the community I'll tell you that that's why you're never gonna convince them it's a scam because at the end of the day it's a community that enjoy the game that's already there. Because at the core of the game the flight mechanics just feel amazing. And you'd be surprised how far having a good community to play with that organizes events and keeps things fresh can go.

As a longtime backer and SC player.
Sq42 is the single player story game. It’s set in same universe as SC just SC is a open world MMO.
Yes there are no load screens in flight in SC or anywhere in game. SQ42 should be mostly same except of course being story based there will be cutscenes.
Most features in SQ42 are in SC. In fact they test somethings in SQ42 first like master modes. SC is just obviously more massive more ships etc.
Also if you are already SC pledged when getting SQ42 its just a $15 add on.
There are also huge updates that were covered at the con this weekend which are also going into SC.
As far as SC it’s a game that won’t technically be finished. Yes there are goals but it will continually be updated and features added. Chris has said this from the start.
As far as frames optimization is last but even in SC over the years you can feel improvement.
Also I know SC and SQ42 gets heat because of funding and time. But this is a crowdfund project where they are extremely open with us. A lot of times they will publicly say things that are just concepts and ideas so of course it takes time and you can see delays. Some of it may even get scrapped. People fail to see many games go through many years of development but you only know of them last as most of it is kept under wraps unlike SC and SQ42. Also a lot of funding has gone to expanding the studio etc. they basically have created their own engine. On their site they have funding breakdowns. Basically here you are seeing everything that happens in game dev vs other games most of it is out of public view.
I know it’s a lot but I suggest ppl check out the whole con. A lot of great info there and great things coming. Including server meshing. They finally have a working test of it and the plan will be SC will introduce this and instead of 100ish players per server how it is now all players will see each other and play together through meshing. They will be the first to introduce this in gaming at this scale.
Also at the end right after this video finished (not seen here) when Chris Roberts got emotional I think you can see how much he cares and wants to deliver.

Just for some context, Bethesda started work on Starfield the same time that CIG started work on Star Citizen and Squadron 42. Now Star Citizen is a long way from being released, but it is also an open world multiplayer sandbox with no in game loading screens. Squadron 42 has not been in the same open development as Star Citizen so we don’t know the exact state of the game or how long it will be before release. That being said what was shown was actual gameplay and some cut scenes all done inside the game engine.

It was always very clear that both would be developed alongside each other, most ressources went into Squadron 42, after the tech and Infrastructure (Company) had been/is being developed.

@@Achilles374 Thats a misdirect. Consider the following..... if the MMO side has limited servers, whats the point of putting all the resources toward that? Imagine having a massive star system with thousands of POIs..... and the server still only runs at 10 ticks with 50 players logged in to share all that space.
Get the single player game out the door so people stop bitching about it, while waiting on server improvements to run stuff at passable performance. Then when the servers work better, go churn out a bunch of content for it without it dying constantly.
And at this point, its not a question of "if" they get the servers working. Its only a question of how its gonna take them. They've already done the widely proclaimed "literally impossible" three times now..... so I stopped bothering to question the "ifs" involved. My bigger question now is "why can't a "competent studio" do this, and do it faster?" when 5 of the most popular multiplayer games could all benefit from the same kind of modular loadshare system a niche sandbox game is doing.

@@Achilles374 thing about the PU is its focused towards a player driven experience, if its a content focused and hand held experience like virtually every other game = gets old fast, like any MMO, people want the next expansion, content release with new raids, dungeons, bosses and drops etc... which they grind for months, because what else is there to do? were gambling addiction is the primary reason players remain committed despite your average MMO content wise remains very much in alpha state of development when you think about it, just bug free as what u can do in your typical MMO is limited....
the PU isnt supposed to played this way, or so limited in what you can do or restricted by content as your only activity = the idea is to yes provide you content to do, but your core experience and what you do, what ultimately happens to make it fun will often involve random and player driven experiences / interactions and nock on effects not directly aimed at you, using the tools provided and content as catalyst to triggering many of these experiences...
as already is the case when you drop into the PU and why many drop in, despite the lack of available content / features and despite the lag / bugs when it does work = its a wonderful experience despite again the lack of content / features... and the fact you can have so much fun, with so little there to work with, it not hard to see why folks become optimistic for the future, as every new feature and new tool to increase what players can do as the choose... expands the possibilities and possible fun to be had, absent the dependency to more traditional content and its grind to extend its shelf life, with rewards to making what otherwise is a brain dead experience, worth doing... again not what the PU is intended emulate.
      also...
most the assets/tech for sq42 are designed for the PU (same engine, just SP mode vs MMO mode, shared assets, AI etc etc), this includes most the core ships, so like the sequence showing the 2nd fleet = all ships intended to be in the PU and player flyable, some of which already are which u can fly like the hammerhead, were others may be exterior implemented and AI piloted for special events etc, but wont be player piloted and interior implemented until after sq42 releases like the idris, which will be player flyable when sq42 drops alongside other ships that are rdy for PU release, but wont release until sq42 drops, alongside allot of other stuff likewise so sq42 will be the first wow moment players have when seeing and experiencing it, before it migrates to the PU for the MMO experience.
so essentially 90% of the $$$ and time put into sq42 = PU development as well, the main diference is the PU needs the server meshing and backbone fully implemented to support the MMO aspect, which is not required for a SP experience.
its no diferent then 1 game releasing with a SP and MP mode, but instead of releasing the 1 game with the SP and MP at the same time, they separated them, so backers could access the developmental build for the MMO side of things to see progress was being made = PU, while the core teams focused on the SP aspect as a standalone polished AAA release and could keep key aspects under wraps as to not spoil the experience for release, but were other things can be droped into the PU when rdy for implementation for MMO side of things or testing related, were things like the idris will be flyable in the PU after sq42 drops for example...
      food for thought.

Those who don't understand the polishing phase is the 3rd to last step sometimes 2nd to last step before launch this is usually done in tangent with optimization and so on, however the first year is often heavily focused on correcting areas that are not up to par with the standard set as we saw with the knife in the neck scene in the single player campaign among some other areas that were lacking and that is usually the focus to bring different areas up to par. As each section finishes that area they move into optimization and that I will be honest I do not expect many machines to run as it's always been designed for the bleeding edge in technology. Some mid-high end systems will probably be able to play on lower settings but don't count mid and low ends systems being able to do much if at all.
As asmongold mentioned optimization usually happens within the last year of development and around that time a launch date is given as well.
They are in the end of the cycle of the game and not giving a set date is a good idea. Often companies will spend a one or two years on the polishing phase which bleeds into the optimization phase and technically launch phase near the end of that period. It is likely that we will receive a launch date near the end of next year as most the devs started polishing months ago when it was rumored for it to be feature complete. It is even possible that we may receive one earlier closer to the middle but I do think around October that would be the case and expect a launch in 2025, my guess would be near the end of 2025 however they can always move it forward.
If something goes wrong then I would suspect a 2026 release date instead that.
If somehow everything goes perfectly in some god tier manner you could expect a launch end of 2024 but I find it quite unlikely as that's barley enough time to polish and optimize and considering the scale and I believe if i remember it being open or semi open world then it needs that time to do a proper set of pass overs with QA.
They know they cannot fuck this up at all and I will suspect launch to be rough regardless it's very difficult to never have something happen for launch no matter the title something usually happens or shortly after launch.
Either way this is massive to see considering how long its been in development being not too far behind most triple A development studios the average game takes 7-8 years from concept to finish and sequel take 3-5 years depending on scale and so on.
This also means since they are near the end that more resources will be poured into Star Citizen which is the multiplayer persistent universe that yes has been shown more love within the last year and by next year will receive a ton more love and progress something many have been waiting for and I do not blame them.
Thing is most of the work and setbacks were strictly because of the game engine.
Cry Engine has a plethora of issues but in 2012 there wasn't anything better and so came the long overhauling process of the entire engine something amazon was working on for many years and released their lumberyard engine in 2016 which basically restarted the project they are now taking the amazon lumberyard engine and modifying it further and especially the backend for netcode and so on being a complete catastrophe among other things add on feature creep because the backers wanted them to go wild with development and well we are here today.
I honestly give them props and props for working on a technology that has mainly been theorized and never tried, something that recently in 2017 one other company attempted and so far has not been very successful with and so even seeing the start of it functioning is impressive along with many other software's and things that previously didn't really exist or didn't exist to such a scale.
People really don't understand the complexity of something in this scale, chris roberts has been a very ambitious man even back in wing commanders days under Microsoft and it's been something that has been a long time coming and seeing him being closer to reaching his goal is definitely something the man was very emotional on stage at the very end and even cried when he first saw server meshing function. I don't think people realize how big of a success that is alone to accomplish and props to Spatial OS for being another pioneer of that technology even if they haven't been successful yet, because it is nothing something easy nor cheap to accomplish and if it moves from static to dynamic in some manner it would absolutely be a massive breakthrough for MMOs across the globe and not just for games but for many other unrelated professions.

Right, the last years SQ42 had the priority in development, so Content where developed for SQ42 first and then they come over to SC. That's why SC didn't show so much progress, even when in the studios internally much more is already ready for SC. And also many features and content depending on the server meshing technology. Before that is not ready enough they can't build it into SC. Server meshing is a so important technology for SC and if it works it has the potential to change MMOs and Online Worlds for ever.

The starter package is all you have to buy after that, you can earn your ships in game. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on ships unless you want to support the game. Some ppl dont understand what they doing there.
Squadron 42 is the Singleplayer / Campaign for Star Citizen (PU)
They Focused 80% of the 1300 devs on the Singleplayer, getting Tech done, Ships, Stations Planets and so on.
Those Tech will now transfer into the MMO Star Citizen, meanwhile Devs also Developing new Tech for the Univers.
0 Loadingscreens, Maps interactive over all scales, full control over shipdoors modules and so much more.
All those tech wasnt there and still isnt on the open Marked. This Team made completly new unseen tech.
Ppl have no clue how huge all this is.
Also Server Mesching, the Tech Demo they showed, no other Company in the world archived this, if they get this whole thing Dynamic its dmn awsome.
Yes the game takes for Ever, 10 Years alrady, but they build up Tech from scratch, not seen.
And Just for Scale, Red Dead Redemption 2 Cost beetween 370 - 540 Million and took them OVER 8 Years.
Star Citizen is building a whole universe as MMO with tons of Gameplayloops.
Ppl just cant handle Open development with all Pros and Cons, and that they dont show hours of Real gamplay im happy, i want to experience the game and not want to see hours of Gampeplay before the game is out.
Same with Ashes of Creations, they show the development process and ppl cry about, scream scam couse they dont handle it like Cyberpunk which hypes and cant deliver or Starfield.
Also Teams like Ashes or Star Citizen are try to listen to the community, which leads to rethink things and develope them different.
Other teams give a s. and your ending up with something you may not like.
What i saw those 2 days at Citizen Con was dmn awsome, from gamplay view and from Tech view.
And to all those who cry about FPS.
Optimizing a Game is with the Polishing the last things a dev team dos.
Cry about it if it is still bad after Release, same for the Universe, its a Alpha not a finished released and optimized game.
It was CPU Heavy, and for those who didnt watched citizen con, they alrady work on it with changing some of the workload from CPU to GPU.

Backer since 2014. I can't wait for this to really bloom.
Already spent a few hundred hours in Star Citizen mining explosive quantanium, doing mercenary work, getting put in prison for failing, stealing other peoples ships, watching my friend fly off in space because the ship turret was blown off and couldn't find him since the early UI years ago didnt have indicators, doing events when rep just got implemented and getting stuff added to my account permanently showing i've done it. Seeing someone fight the spacestation's defenses while all the bullets fly in the air with tracer rounds, ramming someone at max speed while they were trying to stop me from leaving the station and us both blowing up, getting baited into a cave area and getting hit by rockets, doing a 2v1 and forcing one of them to quantum jump before they die, ect. It's been a fun ride.
The singleplayer is also functioning as a practice exercise for a lot of things in multiplayer, forcing them to go 'gold standard' on ships needed for SQ42. I hope they take the time to get it right. "A delayed game is eventually good, a rushed game is forever bad."

Starfield is built on an aging engine from the Fallout series of games and having put 120ish hours into Starfield I can say without significant modding it is not great in the graphics department. The look, score, exploration, and weaponplay are quite good but after two thourough playthroughs I am just more playing around with mods now trying to get more out of the game and hoping for a DLC soon. Squadron 42 has the Persistent Universe which is already online which is a multi-player experience of all the single player gameplay that is in Squadron 42, between both games there is far more replayability. @robinv1485 Год назад +1

I guess you never heard of Dual Universe? That game had dynamic server meshing, and it worked pretty well. There's other examples but that's one of the most known ones.
That being said, dynamic server meshing has it's physical limitations. The reason some engineers say it's not possible in a game like star citizen is due to that. Then they show a video that any university student could pull off and people believe it's working. Problem with that video is that the physical limitations are not present, it's in lan, there's no latency, 3 rooms, etc.
That's the reason that people with knowledge laugh about it, because if they wanted to prove it, this wasn't the way to do it. In fact it's the way to prove the opposite, they even used the common "jump when going through servers" that students used in the past to hide the flaws.
I'm a big SC fan, and I support the project full on, but expectations have to be managed, and I can understand both sides, some don't have education in the matter, others see those and think they are scamming people. I don't think most people are aware of the limitations to such a system. Then you get people like @GUNNER67akaKelt below saying "it scales up". Unless you have it in your hands or see it like DU did in the past, there's no reason to believe it does. Think about it, it would be very easy for them to add a ton of clients and servers together for the demo, there were in fact hundreds of PCs with their builds there, but they chose deliberately not to do it.
Manage your expectations, the tech does exist, it has been done before, has a ton of limitations they have to work around, and they haven't even touched on that so until you get to see or play it working on the PU there's no reason to be hyped about it. Now Pyro on the 31st, even if it's on a separate server, that's something to be hyped about!
