Great informative video. You captured all required information precisely. If I have to design with two types of spindles, one 0.5" and the other 3 3/4". How do you calculate the number of spindles and spacing?
I would have to watch the video again to remind myself. I think I covered the concepts so you can change the numbers and still know how to get your answers.

How do you do spacing on spindles going up stairs??
Won’t you get the same result if you take the length of the spacing divided by the number of spindles to get the spacing for each spindle and then just place the centre of the spindle on the designated point.
Yes you will! That’s how I do my baluster layout, but you will have to add an extra baluster or spindle either way 👍🏻

easier way if it doesn't need to be exact IMO (IE: deck railing panels) : take your length of the panel say 48"
using 1/2" spindles..and spacing at 4"
on your top plate measure over 1/2" and mark a line where your first spindle will sit
measure from the opposite end of the plate back to that line. =47.5"
round down to the nearest 5 or 0. so round down to 45"
that leaves 2.5 inches we have to make up in the spacing
now just add for example 1/4" to each spindle spacing across the length of the panel
until you have made up that 2.5"
a 1/4" extra in this crude example would probably be noticeable compared to the spindles at the 4" spacing but if you had and 8' run it would be more like an 1/8" here 3/16" there so it would be practically impossible to notice any difference in spacing with the naked eye.
..
this is just an example to show the process if your not trying to be absolutely EXACT but want it to look like it is. Obviously adjust the math to make sure your project is to code.

Easy trick I learned in regards to this predicament: take two tape measures out; pull out the both tapes to about ten feet (don’t really see any railing going wider than this between posts). Flip one over upside down. With a black permanent marker, as one is aligned next to the second one, draw a 1” black square Every four inches. Then take a red permanent marker and draw that 1” square at the half of every four marked, which would be 2”. Now just use this upside down tape every time you have a handrail section. Find center and see how the balusters would line up with equal spacing on both side before the posts. Hope this helps.

What a load of baloney and typically American. All you need to do is group your spindles tightly together then divide the remaining space by the nos of spindles + one. Bingo.
And just when I was thinking his method sucks, I made it to your comment.. You should built a pyramid. Start by grouping the stones 😂 😂 😂

@@paparobbo62 I've built 1 deck and that was for a friend's house. What I do, requires much greater precision, and is at a much larger scale. But, I digress, if you can tell us how many 2" spindles, with 2" space are needed for a 100" opening, without "grouping" spindles together, then your method above, though it works, it's a waste of time. 🤞

Old video but this is the only one that i found that help me to resolve this challenge, I'm not an expert at math but also not dumb, but trying to find the right spacing has been very difficult, but with your method seems way easier, thank you , I definitely liked this video and subscribed
For the top rail, I rip a price about 1/2 inch by newel post width and screw that from top. Then I cut a 1/2 deep channel in the actual top rail and brad nail from below. Looks good and is strong.
Hmmm... I finally followed Ann's advice and took Stodoys. It's great for beginners and has some advanced stuff too.
Good way to explain it. I have to do the same thing building log rail systems but I have to take the average diameter of the log spindles and also find center. That gets me started. Sometimes I have custom railings with log spindles from 3in dia to 4in dia, depending on which way you twist it! I either have to just find centers of all of them to drop my mortise in the rail and have unequal spaces or grab an arm full of spindles and lay them out until they all fit with the same spacing. With stairs, I'll end up just finding the pitch and cut an average sized spindle and measure the face to find my "Unit" length.

This was confusing as hell
I thought of a story pole system with desired spacing pre determined and all you would care to do is to space equally the spindles closest to the post on each side. Kind of brainless method. It works thou.

Wouldn’t recommend anyone getting close to 4” if inspectors are really strict, many spindles are curved or walls/nulls not leveled which will make you pass those 4” 👍🏻
I never go more than 3"...
tested it in autocad in several different spaces and spindle thickness spacing worked out perfect to the thousanth thank you sir

Ive been watching videos all morning, how do you do this when you have virtually no width and you are just evenly spacing holes in a 6 ft board? No one will explain this. Ive seen the diagonal trick for spacing the width
Its about evenly spacing, so the spacing is always adjustable until its evenly spaced
Same as in the video. How big are your holes and how many holes do you want to drill. Your board is 72 inches. Add one hole to that and divide by the "units"...

Thank you so much for this video, I know you posted it a while ago but I just found it. I started a new job making stair cases and railings for high end homes and the guy "training" me didn't explain how to get the measurements right and it really frustrated me. I think this video dumbed it down enough to where I can figure it out.
