  • Every 4000km or so you will need to check and adjust the valve clearances on your Honda CB125E. This is a relatively easy job for anyone who is handy with tools.
When you check the valve clearances the engine must be absolutely stone cold, do not check them unless the engine has not been used for at least eight hours. Leaving it overnight is best. If the engine is warm when you measure the valve clearances you will not get an accurate measurement.
Please consider checking out my other video, Valve Clearances - What are we actually checking?

G’day, I just brought a 2012 CB125e and it has a ticking noise coming from the rocker cover. I thought it was the valve clearance. I followed the instruction in your video and sure enough the exhaust valve was .02 of a mm too tight. I adjusted them to spec but after I put the bike back together I’m still hearing the same ticking noise. I used to own a bonneville in my youth and I was told that its valve ticking was normal. Is that the case with a CB125E? Is it normal or am I going to have to do a deeper dive into the engine to find the source of the ticking noise.
Also having a real problem with it overheating on the freeway, my guess is that because the crankcase breather is plumbed back into the carborator it has nowhere for the excess heat to go resulting in me melting my shoe sole when it touches the engine casing.
What are your thought on these issues mate?

What other symptoms of incorrect clearances? Poor starting? Fuel in oil? Misfire?

Symptoms depend on if the valve clearances have become too small (usually caused by valve recession) or too loose (usually caused by wear). Poor starting, lack of power, high fuel consumption, misfiring and excessive valve train noise are the most common. Check the valve clearances at the appropriate intervals and none of these problems will be yours! :-)

With your experience ,realistically when does the first valve clearances need to be performed ? My 2017 has just under 4000 kms.. As good as these things run, hard to tell without visible checking the valve clearances.

Tricky question mate, one of those "your results will vary" ones... They should be checked at 1000km and then every 4000km after that according to the owners manual (from memory) however checking does not necessarily mean adjusting. I've known bikes that have not needed to be adjusted until 12000km and I can only think of one that needed adjustment at 1000km (might have been built late friday afternoon at the factory?). I wouldn't wait any longer than 8000km before checking them.
