Now that the PTU is out I finally got around to giving this a try. Thanks, this will be necessary as we start getting more solar systems, ships and locations ingame, I wouldn't be suprissed if SC ends up being a 400-500 gig game by the end

It's not a Copy On Write trick: you actually download the additional 8 Gb of the PTU and the data is added to the same Data.p4k file in the LIVE folder. If you start and verify the LIVE version again you'll have to download more than 2Gb. This can work for now, but might break at any moment. Backup your LIVE folder before you try this if you don't want to do the full download again.
I don't understand what you mean. People have been renaming their folders and verifying files for years. As far as the game is concerned there is no difference.
@@SubliminaLstv You'll have to update 8 Gb, 2 Gb every time you verify the PTU and the LIVE game before launch. I was checking if there was some CoW mechanism and the system in Windows that employs this technique is VSS, but it involves drive letters, and that can't be used with SC (because it assumes all releases are in the same directory)
The updates may also be a bug in the launcher always dowloading the latest update, unclear to me what is going on, it's not going away.
I didn't bother with any test servers in the past, even when I had access. This guide will probably change that.

Didn't work for me. Downloaded 13 GB, got an error and now downloading the entire 100 GBs. Oh well. I did not have the EPTU install before so maybe that caused the hick-up

Definitely great for those that have consistently good internet. But having to none stop verify these is annoying. I will be doing this but just for the tesing channels. Live will remain to itself for quick access

i normally copy that single file over to the ptu
but since i bought a back up SSD i have been able to downscale files using more then 50% of the Nvme seems to show slow down for me.
This broke something, I have a permanent QR code now that can't be removed through the console, in my PU.
You just have to turn that off in the settings. Options > Graphics > Scroll down to the bottom and click "Session Information QR Code"
This is a new-ish feature maybe they disabled the console command.
I did this, but now when i go to verify the files, the live and ptu will no install, i re-installed the launcher, reset my pc and it wont work.
This just broke my PC, it made the new files unaccesable so i couldn't do anything with it and now i have to reinstall live
My anti cheat did not like this at all. Everything seem to work Screen shoot shortcut and everything. Download, and RSI file check. But the anti cheat did not find any exe in the "right place". 😞
There should not be any anti cheat issues. Your download must be corrupt somehow. I've been re-naming my LIVE folder to PTU and verifying for years and never had an AC issue. This is no different.
Be careful with this method, you never know how libraries, launchers, or anti-cheat systems handle symbolic linking.
I have thought of that, but can't think of how those would show a false positive. If it does at some point we can just stop doing it.
The way mklink works is that *every* program, dll whatever uses the folder being pointed at and has no way to know it has been redirected.
@@RobinHartJones I'm not quite sure what you mean, I don't operate on Windows except to game. However, I just validated on Windows that you can make a call to winapi to see if a file is a symlink. I can think of a few reasons a developer might do this, especially with anti cheat.
Although I think it is unlikely to break something, there is always a chance someone has written code to check for canonical paths. Also note that dynamic linking will not be affected by symlinks.
Just to be clear, is what you are getting as a result each time the same as you would if you had renamed your LIVE folder to PTU? You are telling your PC "when I ask to use the PTU folder just invisibly use the LIVE folder instead (including any attempts by the program to access folders in PTU) "?
That is not a criticism, it is much easier using mklink. I just wanted to check what is happening.
Yes it is exactly like renaming, but it's almost like its automatic.
Is there some reason you're creating an extra symbolic link for Live? Why not just leave Live alone and link everything else to it?

Do I need to undo this somehow? I tried it and did not work for me, game will not launch, stuck on window with Star Citizen(not responding). After a while all proces stop, cpu spools down and then nothing after. I tryed uninstall and reinstall, no luck... Im locked out of game now.
To undo this you simply delete the new shortcuts folder. Your issue cant be related to this. I has to be something different or you did something wrong during the process.
@@SubliminaLstv Ok thank you. I did remove them. In the end, I had to uninstall Star Citizen and Easy anti cheat both and reinstall them after removing all associated files, then after couple of attempts and relogs it started working again. I have no idea what was causing it.
Symlinks, yeah works. Git is better. Also your drives are way too full! Ssd's do not like that..
Oh that last tip was really retro, kinda reminded me of the .bat(ch) times.. ;)
