Nice. I learned a lot. Pull router instead of push, burn away the burs, choice of bits. This is what I come to RUclips for!
Thank you very much for the great comments and I am glad I could help!
I'm a fan of the chisel wave effect but this just gained my attention! I can't wait to try it. well Done!
thank you and i really like to add this effect onto plaques. really makes them just a little different. go for it and keep the cuts small. I cut off more than one letter practicing this technique :)
I liked watching and learning about the edge guide. I also liked watching you create the background effect. Thanks for posting these sign making videos.
My pleasure bud, lots more to come!
Thanks for the tip on the grain!
I just learned I'm getting a router for christmas...your videos are gonna be a huge help, like a fast-track tutorial!
Excellent video quality btw. I'm subscriber #881...you'll hit that 1000 mark soon!
Thank you for watching and subscribing! Never thought I.would get this close to 1000 natural subscribers. Good luck with the routing and if you Have Any questions just send me a message!
you really make this look easy.. ive been learning for a year now and cant do near as nice as you can!
thank you! alot of practice
Very different back ground very interesting. Sign looks great
Appreciate that Tommy, and thanks for watching!
Loving your videos Jon. Great help to a noob router sign-maker!
My set of bits arrived by the way, thanks bud
Glad you like the videos and very happy to help with the bits! If you have any questions just send me a message
Great technique! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your nice comment!
I do the chisel effect with a 90% bit
I do that to sometimes, I like the random wavey effect the gouge brings. Also I find that the cuts are cleaner if I use the gouge, no little wispy bits
Enjoyed your video, very nice work! I have never used my router this way but I can see it would enhance my productivity immensensly. May I ask where do you pruchase your bits? and what are the various sizes that are used? Do they come in a complete set or is that really necessary? Thanks again for the info and keep up the great work, really did enjoy for sure!! Thanks August
Thank you for the informative video. How do you avoid burning the wood with going either too fast or slow in movement or router speed?
each piece of wood is a bit different, i cut it out in layers so i get a feel for how the woods behaving. generally I run the router at full speed and make sure the bits are very sharp. that really helps with any burning of the wood or tear out
Nice effect... thanks for the instructions... well done. Why did you burn then paint over it?
Hi Gary, I burn to get rid of all the tiny wisps and burrs
Could I use my existing 1/8" shank Dremel bits with a 1/4-1/8" adapter to use with my (DeWalt 611) router?????
yes, as long as you get a good fit with the 1/4 to 1/8th collet reducer
Nice work .. how long did the whole process take.. including design on computer?
sorry for the late reply! project time from start to finish was maybe three hours? these ones dont take very long
Watching with interest. May have a go myself. What wood chisels do you recommend, i rather like the outset look. Thank you.
Ah, I see you mention kirschen chisels. Thanks.
You don't really need expensive gouges, most important thing is for them to be very sharp. Most chisels need a little work out of the box, but some good ones are kirchen, pfeil or flexcut. They are all good quality and mostly sharp
@@JohnathonWhittaker I'll check em out, thanks
Brilliant
Thank you!
Beautiful letterings.
May I know what software to use for such calligraphic font? Thank you very much!
Hi Kelvin. I use a program called Inkscape. Ita free to download and I have a few videos on my channel showing how to use the program to design signs. Thanks for watching!
Liked and subscribed,in the video you say you use a dremel like tool is it a foredom?
I use a similiar tool to the fordom, it's called a Wecheer, 1/4 horse power with a foot pedal, works great!. I also use a dremel 4000. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnathonWhittaker Thanks for taking the time to reply, looking forward to more content
@@sandman2651 no worries bud! I try and do a new video every one to two weeks
another great project! curious though what you chose to transfer your letters from paper to wood? Carbon paper? tracing? thanks in advance!
Hi Sean, I don't use carbon paper anymore, I use a method called lazer printer and lacquer thinner transfer. it requires a laser printer but works great. if you look at my other videos, I demonstrate how to do it a few times
I dont get the burn if your just going to paint it?
Hi Mark, the burn is basically a short cut. This is pine and tends to get lots of little wispy burrs and splits. A quick burn cauterizes the wood, gets rid of all those sandy bits amd changes the texture of the wood. Gives it a slightly more "polished" look. I'm not a big fan of the burn only effect so add paint. If i was going to leave the background more natural, i would have skipped the burn and hand sanded more. Hope that answers your question and thanks for watching!
I didn’t see where do I get the bits and the color for the quarter to a eight
Hi there, since i am in the UK the bits are a bit country specific. I order the 1/8th shank bits off Amazon and eBay. They usually come.from China. As for the colour, it is Marsh spray ink, black. You can adapt this technique with any router bits you currently have. Any bit with a fine point, and straight bit for clean out
Can You write what exactly KIRSCHEN model You use for a background? #11:40
I mean 8mm and 14mm. What are these models? Maybe some link to them?
Thank You!
Yes will do
Hi there, so.for this video I used 3 different straight gouges. A number 3, 5 and 7. I have these in both the 10mm and 16 mm depending what I need at the moment and Which one is sharpest . This is a link for Kirschen chisels, definetly cheaoer options out there though www.amazon.co.uk/Kirschen-3114010-Carving-Chisel-Handle/dp/B001EGG2P6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537459405&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=kirschen+gouges&dpPl=1&dpID=313BaCbba%2BL&ref=plSrch
What font do you used?
This was Hanford script, available on Dafont. Thanks for watching!
What font is that? Great job btw
Thank you! I believe this was a font called black chancery, got it from the dafont.com website
hello, nice work. what bit you are using? could you send a link of that?
Hi There, I am using 1/8th shank bits and a collet reducer in a normal trim router. Will add some links to the bottom of the videos. Thanks for watching
How did you get the text printed so nice on the wood?
DINO IL CAGNOLINO if you check out my other videos I show exactly how to transfer the image onto the wood
Why burn it if you paint it
I burn it to get all the little wispy wood hairs off, it raises the wood grain and rounds off any sharp edges a little. I generally only burn if i am using pine .Plus i like using the flame;)
¿Que modelo dewalt es? What dewalt model is it?
Hi Oscar, Its a Dewalt D262 trim router. I had a modified base plate made for it
muchas gracias
@@ElGatitoDubstep de nada
looks like a real handy base.
@@rotoclip3427 it is! highly recommend
making one
Why didn't you just mask it off and sandblast it?
I wanted the gouged background. Sandblasted signs are very common around here so need to give something different. That Hand carved look
@@JohnathonWhittaker Thanks.
Love for you to make me one of these I'd happy to pay plus postage sir
Hi jake, I can certainly do.one.of these for you, currently fully booked until November but can certainly accommodate you then if thats not to.much of a delay
@@JohnathonWhittaker November is fine be mid November round 16th if its OK how much with posting to Scunthorpe UK plz sir
@@jakecarter2775 scunthorpe is not a problem. Maybe £6 1st class? I am based in Devon so not that far
@@JohnathonWhittaker that's fine sir just let me no nearest time bad memory old age lol could you do me one saying gamblers den plz sir if so how much for both posted
How do you get your pattern on the wood?
Hi Sean, I use the lazer jet / cellose thinners method. If you look at my other videos, i show exactly how i do it, printer, thinners, everything. Must be lazer printer though. Ink jet does not work with this. Need to use heat instead
dont see any reason to burn it dont see any change
Mostly I do a light burn because it's pine. Gets lots of little wispy burrs and flame takes care of that, also seals the wood
