  • @johnton5656

A respectful comment based on 45 years making signs. On that split wood on the 3: there is a technique called "climb-cutting" - you run your router the "wrong" direction. In the case of the 3 where you had trouble, you'd run the router right-to-left. Use this technique in any area where you come to a situation where the router's going to get caught in the grain like that. Even the sharpest brand-new bit can dig the grain like that, depending on the species, grain, and dryness of the wood. I think of it as "rolling" along the wood rather than "back-pedaling" against the wood. It is a slightly dangerous technique and MUST be used with great care and a firm grip, as the router can skitter away from you in a fraction of a second. Try this on some scraps - great thing to remember on the two troublesome outside corners - which most rectangular signs have - these can present the same grain-splitting issue.

    • @davidographicsguy
      @davidographicsguy  6 лет назад

Very well said John, that’s a great explanation of flowing with the grain. Cedar is more like digging through thick carpet whereas Redwood, the grains are like speed bumps 😁 I was a little careless going around the bottom of the three. I have to have my head in the game every second. Thank you!

Those scoop things - they're called gouges. Cedar is a very "stringy" wood for carving and chips out a lot when using a router. A good wood for carving this type of project is Basswood (Linden). Its soft like cedar but has very little grain pattern. A favourite for realistic decoy carvers.

    • @davidographicsguy

I agree! I love basswood. I choose cedar for exterior durability and rough 'ol world' look. :)

    Just one little question:
You start the video with a COPY PAPER on the wood, then you draw the digits 534 on the paper. Yes?
Why didn't you draw the digits right on the wood from the first place?
What is the copy paper for??!
    And one more note:
It is a pity that the thickness of the digits is not light brown or even white.
Emphasize that the digits are thick and not flat.
Anyway thank you for great work and very good video.

Good question. I did not mention it in the video, but the letters were created with my computer and vinyl plotter using a pen tool.

@@davidographicsguy thank you for your answer.
It looks like you draw the digits with your free hand!!
I made a lot of billboards in my life, and always colored the thickness of the letters.
A color that will be neutral.
A little different from the background of the sign, and a little different from the color of the letters.
In your case the background was dark gray, (almost black) and the letters were gold, so light brown (or gray) could have been amazing for the thickness of the letters.
I know you're an artist, and that's just my advice.
I hope you understand what I mean to color the thickness of the letters.

I think you mean an outline added around the numbers. I did not think of that. That would be a great idea and add a touch of elegance. Thank you!

NOT a line on the letters!
But color on the thickness of the letters.
The letters have a height, they are not flat. Paint this height.
Hahahahaha Too bad you can't attach a picture to the comments.
Thank you for your time, answered me.

Very helpful video (as are all your videos...I'm a fan). 1 question...Did you varnish over the gold leaf after engine turning, or is it just bare gold? Thank you for your videos.

No clear coat over gold. It diminishes its luster.

Nicely done, very nicely done. Why did you paint the numbers gold, then put the metal film over them? Is that metallic film translucent? Thanks, great job!

Thank you! No film was applied to the gold, I just spun it for texture.

@@davidographicsguy By "film" I meant the gold coating that came off the paper that you put on then brushed/blew off.

It's fun to watch and it's very informative at the same time. It's just a shame the borders should have been left with the pre-stain instead of putting the actual stain on it. The grain and the natural color of the wood were somehow under appreciated

You can use different fonts but the bolder fonts are the best cause the pop out even more.
You can also reverse the process as well by sinking your design in the material.

    I have two questions.
What was your total time on this sign?
Was it built for a paying customer. ?
    Thanks
