The Honda CR-V is one of the best crossovers of all time. However one of my favorite things ever in the Honda scene is people who take their daily drive B20 powered Honda CR-V and throw a big turbo on it! The B20 is a popular budget swap in some of the lighter Hondas, as well as it's all wheel drive system. So what's it like driving a turbo Honda CR-V? Let's talk about it!

@@TikusTakusen agreed teaming up with a predatory gambling site is cringe.
The real OG subscribers of this channel know that the turbo noise in David’s intro to his videos, is from the teal blue integra shown in this video!🤘🏽
Last time I was this early David was driving a 300hp turbo B-series “sleeper” EG 😂 yeahhhh I’ve been here that long
Damnnn!!! Still my go to video to introduce people to my obsession with Sleeper builds
Sameee
Me too bro
I remember that vid😂😂😂
Not a big Honda fan but I love seeing first gen CRVs on the road. This is just perfect
Sounds to me like you might be a bigger fan than you think lol
Fake patina is stupid though
Makes me regret selling my mine.
I was the first person in my area to slam a CR-V, '00 5MT AWD. First ever big project, had to learn all the quirks of the platform on my own, definitely a smiles per gallon car! I was actually getting ready and building up parts for a turbo build before someone offered me twice what i had in it.
Need to snatch another one up before they get more popular as a platform.
Amazing video as always David!
the manual ones are definitely taxed these days but still can find em for pretty cheap. i mean its a 90s honda
Those CRV's also had a folding table in the rear where the spare tire would normally go if it was not mounted on the tail gate.
I regrettably sold my 1st gen CRV years ago, but I kept the table and still have it! 😂
I think as unique ICE platforms get more and more scarce, first generation crossovers (CRV's Foresters, Suzuki Sidekicks, etc.) will become increasingly popular for tuners. AWD is tried and true, plus it was a standard feature. A lot of people have discounted that but I'm sure that's coming to an end.
I've been thinking crossovers in general will be the next tuner platforms for a while now also. Same drivetrains as tuner cars in a lot of cases, and a lot of older car enthusiasts don't want them, so they're cheap and not in high demand. I could see a lot of young car enthusiasts starting out modifying crossovers in the future.
I'll take a suzuki SX4 over the sidekick
The AWD system on these are weak AF. Most people who made big power with these back in the day would remove the driveshaft so they wouldn’t blow the rear diff up.
@@bestmillimeter1858That's the thing, you don't need big power. A turbo crv is not meant to be the fastest car on the road. It's different and fun as heck to drive.
@swanginfleet thats funny you say that, because literally the only thing i ever hear honda guys say is "yeah bro if I awd swap and turbo mine i can beat anything on the road"
After blowing through countless piles of money on two STi builds, a guy in my car club brought me into the world of AWD Civics. It took me 5 years but we built an AWD EM1 Si (my favorite generation), at the moment we’re still fine tuning more or less everything as we literally finished it last weekend. I’ve always liked the B16, so for the time being I’m going to keep it, I don’t want to be one of those guys who puts his whole build sheet in a comment but even at 7PSI it’s a genuinely good time!
Sometimes it's all about what the car means to you. Congrats on your car bro!
just finishing my awd ek ( b20 crv engine ). its one of those projects thats taking a while but its worth it in the end eh.
Building mine now 98 crv with unfortunately low comp b20. Bought a 2000 itr head and in the process of doing my b20vtec. Love the crvs
I have a full Integra type r motor in my 99 CRV paired with the CRV 5 speed 4WD transmission! 9k rpms in a CRV!
Things sick bro. Love the cluster, was that from the ITR?
@@benjamingaray5660 Cluster is from S2K. 04-05 with conversation harness.
@@matthewl2260 Ahh, thought I seen one somewhere before. Killer ride man. Any other plans with it?
@@benjamingaray5660 With all the mods I've done, I honestly drive it and do basic maintenance. Just put new tires on recently. I'll have to get a new video of all my mods soon.
CRVs are getting more popular recently it feels like, super good to hear, I have a '99 with the 5MT at 300K miles on original motor and trans, thing is a trooper. Perfect 2nd car.
I’m a Honda guy from way back and since I sold my CRX I’ve been into building classic C10 pickups. I found a 99 CRV at a garage sale a few years ago with a blown engine and I bought it cheap and put a low mileage JDM b20 in it and it’s bone stock. It’s been my daily driver for 3yrs now. Unless I need to haul my big trailer my trucks just sit in the shop. You’d be blown away with all he stuff I’ve hauled with my CRV especially with the roof rack.
Another point is the space. I have a 09 Forester X thats lowered with full suspension. We got snow today and I threw my snowblower in the back and did some of my friends driveways. Cant do that in most cars. This CRV looks good. Personally I would bless it with a good paint job.
Favorite grocery getter sleeper?
1st and 2nd gen Taurus SHO. The original sleeper. Literally the first one. Faster than the same era mustang GT
A Hilton tune on my V70 T5.
2000 Buick Regal GS!
I have a b20v with the greddy kit. Made 267whp. Blew two b20s and finally going b18. Only aiming for around 400whp with a 3rd gen rear diff.
Should be a party.
Gotta pay homage to where the awd drive phase actually started not with the Honda CRVs but a few years prior to the rt4wd wagon from the 88-91 bodies
Yeah and the original awd was much better as I'm sure you know.
Weird seeing this video as I prepare my beater manual AWD CRV on the same exact Evo 8 wheels for winter.
Helll yeaaa first gen rd1 owners let’s gooo 💪🏼💪🏼
always wanted to see one of these. i knew a girl that had one and after getting hooked on k swaps from the boosted boiz i always wondered why someone doesnt have a 1k hp awd crv. but really 400-500hp woudl be a good daily
I remember having a 100% stock looking 98 civic sedan and i stuffed in a b20b and s80 gsr trans. Still ran hubcaps n all lol. Bad thing about boosted b20's are they have thin cylinder walls so no high boost unless the walls are strengthened
Also that crv has a really long arm throw because its not an upgraded shifter. Its just an extension. If you look at it, it just has a shifter lever with the cnc'd piece of aluminum with another shaft and shiftknob on top thats tightened down to the length they wanted it at. I used to have one in my old 2015 civic si
Anyone notice the missing lug nut on the front driver side lmao
Had 8 now lol now own a mk1 jdm performa model , manual and only 38,000 miles on the clock and zero rust 👌it’s my baby lol ❤
I had a '90 Civic Sedan with a B20Z2 in it, 2000 CRV engine if I remember correctly. Had a 280z, WRX, and a few other fun projects but that EF sedan is to date the one I most regret selling. Old Hondas just a fun factor to them like nothing else, went from a FWD hater to not caring about that pretty quickly.
Now I am hating myself even more for getting rid of the 98 I had -.- ALSO some people don't know this but the plastic tray/cover in the back that covers the jack and all.....turns into a table
My first manual was an AWD RD1. I miss that car every day.
Was always a fan of the B16 and B18. They were so abundant, and good, back in the late 90's.
I have a 1st gen crv on just 6 psi of boost. It is a blast to drive. It just barely pulls away from my friends 2020 STI.
I built a 1st gen boosted crv as well. It was a blast. Used to take it offroading and to the dragstrip. Multi use
I’ve been wanting to build something like this but with a Toyota rav4
Thank you for this buddy!
Had a 2002 CRV, beige on beige. Drove the hell out of it, left foot braking was the solution to corners. It was fun but I don’t miss it. Odd thing is that it was more expensive to maintain than my current 2008 e60 535xi, nobody believes that but true. Both are/ were high mileage.
This is why started watching this channel years ago
mine is 98 or 99 and i love it so much, it comes with its own lil table in the back too, great for picnics, everyone calls it the rainbo car, and everyone borrows it in the winter when their cars won't start my son calls it the whip
Having the intro car(noise) in the video….that was smooth😌🤌🏾🤌🏾
Big Turbo This Big Turbo That. How about a Tiny turbo that lights the instant u hit the gas. But on an old car that made like 200hp. But only makes a little more now but spools way quicker! Now THATS something unique in todays world of overpowered cars.
Honestly a B16 head on your B20 is a great first step. You just have to run premium after but you get a noticeable boost in power. I off-road mine.
B20VTEC is a fool's errand, you need to build bottom end to rev past 7500 safely on a B20. It's 80% the cost of doing a K24 swap. B18b rods/pistons/turbo build 400 whp makes more sense.
@@TopClips7777 Cool anecdote. You can't drive an anecdote.
@@Diesel257 how's Marsha doing?
Funny to see this, I have a JDM RD1 and I love it. Just started in -40 like a champion
LOVE my 01 CRV. Modded 09 Si gets parked for the winter. the crv is sweet. and LOVE the table in the back lol
These are actually pretty common around Toronto
I just got a Crv from a car dirty Santa party I went to. Took a clapped out Grand Prix and came home with a pretty nice Crv…. After watching this I just want to turbo it now 😂
The newer crvs have k series motors. I’m curious on if the results of doing a similar build would be worth it
2nd gens DID come in a manual, just hard af to find
There is a few boosted ones on RUclips and they rip
I daily a bone stock 1991 Honda Accord with the F22A1 and a 4 speed automatic (no rust) she's not the fastest car I've ever owned but she's got a decent suspension. No ABS, traction control, or any drivers aides, but I enjoy driving this thing to its limits. Got a Stage II brake pads and rotors (drums in the rear) because I need to stop before I get to any power adders. It does have the electronic seat belts (with lap belt) and I've no intention of getting rid of this little tank. 84,000 miles and she's not going anywhere.
Turbo tegi sound bite will always be iconic
That thing just sounds so freaking good.
Let’s go this gives me hope for my turbo CRV build
Just trust the process brother
So happy to see this platform recognized by David love my V and always making it better.
Nice CRV bro, I got one just like it, a 99 in clover green pearl with the 5speed AWD, mine has 300K miles though.
@@fridayworm3898 nice mine is auto with 235k, was looking for auto I daily drive mine every day.
Had one for four years with a Orthia head and a bunch of other stuff. It was slow and the rear differential was sooooo weak and left me on the side of the road (temporarily) 3 times while having to take off the damn driveshaft because the U-joints snapped. Finally got tired of it and drove it around exclusively fwd until I sold it. Kept the driveshaft for my EG hatch 😂
Nah that makes perfect sense
This thing is so fucking wicked. I'm sending this to my wife since we need a family vehicle
😂 my wife hates it! 😂
5:18 the famous turbo noise for all of David’s intro vids
Super cool. I’ve been looking into crv’s. Originally wanting to lift one but now idk if I want to lower one now
Ive wanted a first gen CRV for years. dont know why, never driven one, but theyre just kinda cool and quirky and i want to build one.
I want a turbo car. Thing is I dont know which one to mess with. The lancer or the outlander. But after this vid I think the lancer will stay the way it is. 😅
I have a 91 integra rs with a b20b in Puerto Rico for my vacation cars and man that fucking engine is the best it can sit for a whole year while I’m gone and start back up, get beat up for 3 weeks on the mountains and repeat, jus wish it had vtec at times, you can really feel where the power falls off on high revs
Got an 2000 EK Civic, 1998 RD1 CRV RVI and 2004 RD7 CRV RVI. Wanted to build a 4WD Civic but kinda want to turbo the RD1 now too. Then slam it on EVO wheels.
5:17 so THATS where the audio for your into came from!
Let’s goooo CRV gang, I love my 2000 crv 🙏🏻
RD1 CR-V in my very bias opinion is the perfect vehicle. Everything was made for fun. Literally a “Compact Recreation Vehicle"
I own a gen 2 crv and all the sleepers I see are of the 1st gens with the b series, mine has a k24 from factory so I’m excited to build it and prove even the worse models of the k24s can still be mean in the right hands
I have a 2nd gen also. Been wanting to build it. Done a couple small cosmetics but nothing under the hood other than a starter replacement. Have over 300,000 on engine and trans
Super hype for the plaidessey review. The reaction is gonna be great😂
Best reviews are your bonkers builds and the sleeper ones
I have a supercharger kit destined for my RD1. The goal isn't to make it fast. It's to make it reasonable 😂
I love the RD1 though! Honestly my favorite car ever.
*I absolutely love everything about this*
"Take parts from a 'certain car' and make it awd" .... I guess those diffs are getting very hard to find 😂
Technically the holy grail is the civic 4wd wagon that came with a viscous coupler in the driveshaft, and a pretty much indestructible rear diff up to about 700whp. The crv awd system is actually kinda trash unless you upgrade them. S1 built makes lots of awd parts for them. To get the crv drivetrain to hold any power you need to upgrade and or lock the clutch packs in the rear diff and you need to run a coupler if you lock the rear diff. Which you get from the wagon or a freelander.
I'd like to do the same with the Honda element, then add the sc bumpers on
Having a CRV like this makes sense. I’ve never considered it before but this is a sweet sleeper
I have a stock 01 automatic and I love it. I'm already looking for a manual I can turbo.
Fun vehicles for sure, and a LOT can be done to them. I always have a soft spot for the gen 1s. They just look good.
My daily is a 10th gen civic si with full bolt ons. It makes all the sounds besides the flutter.
Just realized the Integra clip he shows is also the one in his intro, dope
I found a cheap one for 1k with 90k miles and a turbo kit for 1,3k should I do it😂 I wouldnt have much to loose anyways
And if I keep the look lowkey cops would care anyways "just another crv"
I wonder which model of the crv is the best to turbo..
i would put a slick on the spare just to mess with people. having a daily that still makes turbo sounds is always fun.
I have a turbo k 24 awd 5th gen prelude and lo e the awd it never spin and I'm pushing 600 wheel
Giving Collector Car Feed more B roll to use, aye?
Makes complete sense to me
I loved my 99 crv, sold it to buy a TL, would rather have the crv now, you forgot to mention the spare tire cover is a table as well
It also has a built in table.
Yeaa! CRV love 😤😤😤
Love the full size spare and the picnic table in the trunk .
I liked the K24 Supercharger EK you reviewed
the crv's are a slept on car me mother had one that was stock right, hand drive and man that thing would move
I had a b-series in my 90 integra which they came with a--duh lol but b18 non vtec head work full exhaust and just an intake. But I took everything out the engine bay that I wasn't gonna use. Cruise control etc. Only had 2 seats door panels and dash. B&M shirt throw cheap ebay clutch (was 2009) lowered 17s ..and man that thing would move. Would bark 3rd. I prefer b-series.
Funny that earlier today i was looking to buy one to do that same lmao then you drop this vid
David threw an Easter egg in this video, 5:17 is the sound clip in the intro.
I feel blessed my first car was a 98 crv now I’m driving a soon to be big turbo b20 ek swapping soon
i love my dd crv its the best car ever
wanna build one idk hom horse power i could put in it reliably but definitely would do it
I'm coming up on 300 thou wow on my 2012 pilot. Might be time to modify...
Other Easter eggs..there is a picnic table in the back of every cr-v in that generation
Sleeper status
does it have the table though?
Yes it does
After my frs build, im gona TRY to find a decent accord 2dr cd5 to build for another daily. Miss my old accords.
That is a nice modern ratrod. I would defo have it, it looks sick.
The fake patina is not cool though. Honestly just makes it look goofy
@engineerisengihere44 that's what I like about it. It looks like a cartoon van lol
Better thank a little island names Montserrat for the b series build especially b20. The first place and country to build a b20 in a ef civic,,then e.g. then integra and I mean b20 with vtec
Can't wait for someone to kswap a 1st gen crv and you test it!
WHAT ARE THE ODDS I JUST GOT ONE TO BULD FEW WEEKS AGO LETS GO!!!!!
B20s are the absolute worst b series for boost ( unsleeved). The factory cylinder sleeves are way too thin and crack sleeves all day. It’s the same sleeve as a 81mm ls or Gsr but bored to 84mm and it takes all the meat off the factory sleeve. Junk
But how are the air bags? Love it man.
My first car was a crv and i turboed it, a ton of fun but was honestly super unreliable lol
how does this one compare to the track-built V you reviewed before? you seem to be a lot more forgiving here and speaking very highly on the control opposed to before
