Yes of course the other Beatles were on this song but it was written totally by Paul. As most of their songs were written individually after they quit touring. Of course they get in the recording and all the Beatles contribute their parts. But on this one I don't think any of the other Beatles played on this. Same with Eleanor Rigby and there was another one that they just had an orchestra

I was born in 1963. I am an only child who was raised ( and still live ) on the family farm I discovered the Beatles in the mid-late 70's when I heard Got To Get You Into My Life on the radio. It was a moment that I will never forget! I played French Horn in the school band at that time. But, then I bought a bass guitar and began learning Beatles songs. I would buy an album and learn every bass line before I purchased another record. That was my disciplined approach. I knew that I wanted to become a musician. A couple of years later, I purchased a Gretch guitar ( because George Harrison played one ). When I graduated high school I went to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. where I studied jazz ( due to the fact that jazz is a great learning tool )
The Beatles were largely dismissed at a school like that. But, I never lost my love of their music. During my twenties, I played mostly as a solo act with an acoustic guitar while also developing a Beatles show that lasted for one hour. I recorded all backing tracks at home but performed the lead guitar parts live and, of course, sang live as well. I even had a Seargent Pepper's outfit to wear on stage. Music has brought me so much joy and I have met and worked with wonderful musicians. I love the fact that you are just now discovering this music for yourself! It is so good to see you taking this journey. By, the way, I still play today. Take Care, Scott.

Love Paul's voice on this one. He doesn't sound like he warmed up to sing at all. He just opened his mouth and what came out was the final track. If this was on American Idol or The Voice the singer would try to make every note perfect. Paul sounds like he's been crying for an hour and then recorded the song...so much emotion.

    • @Lucille_McCartney73
      @Lucille_McCartney73 3 года назад +3

That’s what I was thinking! Either he cried right beforehand, or... He was trying to keep it together for the length of the song... There’s a part of the song where, it sort of sounds like a yawn? Maybe? But I keep thinking that maybe he was choking up or tearing up? Something like that...

For my money, one of McCartney's best composition. just gorgeous. A lot of people always give Phil Specter a lot of shit for his production on this, but i personally love it. You can hear the stripped down version on 'let it be naked' and the song certainly holds up in the stripped down setting but, i think the strings, the choir, the horns are perfect on this...

This song is so packed with emotion as far as I can tell. Paul's voice is poignant and wistful and matches the lyrics. It never fails to touch me. Apart from the seemingly obvious interpretation as a love song , I've always thought that perhaps Paul was reaching out to John knowing that there was a developing void between them. In places, Paul's voice sounds like he is close to tears. It is difficult to pick any one Beatle song as being special but this one comes close. Glad you loved it Harri. I really enjoy hearing these songs, that I have grown up with, through your ears.

    • @rheailiarome2287

I agree with you I think Paul was reaching out to John who by then had lost himself in drugs and was besotted by yoko and leaving the Beatles behind.
I think John's behaviour affected all of them very deeply and we have George singing All things must pass and Ringo with his song Photograph. Different songs but somehow the same theme. John lost his way and was leaving them behind. The end was approaching. So sad I can't help my tears and the sense of loss I feel.
I'm certain that they would be back working together had John not been so tragically taken away. 🙏

@@porflepopnecker4376 I guess it has to do with the fact that we're so used to it, but in this case I think Paul was right. This is a true singer-songrwiter type of song where Paul is supposed to shine, and I think the orchestration makes it too "epic" and takes away from the calmness and simplicity of the song. Just done with him and the band. They wanted out, but Paul didn’t, and he just couldn’t take it much longer... It was tearing him apart and breaking his heart. The emotion in Paul's voice here is obvious and heartbreaking. It was a difficult time in his life, he knew The Beatles were reaching the end of 'their' road and his heart is clearly on his sleeve.
As to the Spector 'contribution' I totally understand Paul's ire because these changes were made *without* his permission. Irrespective of whether the strings etc. worked, the final say should have been Paul's.
Paul McCartney actually wrote a letter to Allen Klein and gave him a right bollocking for allowing someone (Spector) to interfere with his music. The last line of that letter from Paul was:
    "Don't ever do it again!"
    Go Paul!!!
    Enjoying this channel v much.

Much of the Beatles success can be attributed to their reliance on producer George Martin. He took them from a talented and prolific rock band to an artistic trendsetter. All the art rock of the 70’s can be traced back to George putting strings on Yesterday.
Likewise, you don’t hire one of the most successful music producers in history and tell him to push the buttons when you say. If McCartney wanted a yes man, there were thousands they could have hired.
Spector was brought out board for his input and insight. Ultimately it didn’t work out because of a clash of egos, but Paul being pissed because Spector added strings is ridiculous. First off, they’re beautiful and second, they could have been removed at any time from the master.

@@sdfried4877 the difference between George Martin and Spector was that with George, it was a *collaborative* effort. George was not Paul's 'yes man'. They had a great relationship and were very much in sync musically. Spector (at Lennon/Klein's invitation) did what he did *without* Paul's knowledge or assent.
Paul had every right to be "pisssed", it's *his* song - you say it's ridiculous because *you* think the strings are beautiful. So? What? Paul should just shut up because sdfried thinks the end product is beautiful? (TBF, I actually like this version, in addition to Paul's 'original'. But I will always defer to Paul's preference on what *he* wants *his own song* to sound like.)
For the record, Paul didn't have an issue with Spector. He was furious with Klein. He fully understood that Spector was just doing as he was told. And he DID ask that the song be altered to his specifications but his protestations fell on deaf ears and Spector's version was released. George Martin was also angry about it and supported Paul's ojections, complaining that it had all been done behind his and Paul's backs.

The original is on Let It Be Naked. There's a letter somewhere on the internet where Paul writes to Spector and demands that he take the strings off his song, saying that he had no right to add them! Quite an angry letter.

@@tedregal7574 Phil Spector was given the Let It Be tapes to work on after Phil produced John Lennon's "Instant Karma" single. I haven't read anything in books or seen in interviews about John's relationship with George Martin at the time. What isn't mentioned here is that Glyn Johns was approached by Paul in December, 1968 to be "engineer, bordering on producer" for the Let It Be sessions. John even offered Glyn the Let It Be tapes so that Glyn could put together an album, but after doing so, The Beatles rejected Glyn's version.

Being born in 1963 and raised in a house where pop/rock music was a daily routine, I grew up with The Beatles from a very early age. But of course it wasn't until years ater that I really could grasp and understand their musical geniality and impact on the world. And on me.
I still remember the first time I really listened to this song. I heard it before, but never really payed attention. When I did it struck me how clearly this song was in fact a Paul McCartney solo song. By the time this song was recorded there wasn't much left of the Lennon/McCartney collaboration. And especially in this song it shows. And for the first time I became aware of my preference for McCartney signatured songs within The Beatles.
Although it's virtually impossible to pick out a favourite Beatles song; gun to head I would this one would be a big contender.

Someone once described Paul McCartney's voice as being like an impressionist artist, I think it was the rolling Stones magazine when they were breaking down the 100 best vocal artists of all time they said that his voice each note is very simple and honest but put together it makes this masterful piece of color -- put on a Sonic level because of course it's singing

As my friend was playing guitar and I was playing the piano while going through a Beatle’s songbook, I had to stop and get my cello out to add in the mix. I just felt that the string mellowness was missing. I put the cello between myself and the piano, after a few times it worked. This was just a cold winter afternoon with the fireplace burning and the cello was warmth.
