I have a tiny yard. I have used old filing cabinets, on their backs with drainage holes drilled in, then up on bricks. I have 7 four drawer and a couple of 2 draw ones that run right around the edge of the yard to leave a space in the middle for somewhere to sit. I filled them like this and my window ledges are full of veg seedlings ready to go in. Beans, courgettes, squashes, nasturtiums etc. I also have 4 dwarf rootstock fruit trees in the cabinets too. Next, it will be growing some mushrooms in the mulch. My first full summer in this yarden so looking forward to seeing how productive it can be.
You’re an absolute gent mate. I’m new to gardening, have bought your book and watching your videos on RUclips. I’ve learned so much in a short time, thank you 👍🏻
Just planted my first tomatoes! Also some rosemary and basil... ill translate your message to my language. You changed the way I see the world. Thankyou so fkin much!
This is exactly how we filled our garden beds , same style as yours . We went to the saw mill and collected saw dust for in between the beds . With the tomatoes we companion plant with basil and plant marigolds as pest management . Love your work brother , keep the great content coming . ✌️
Your shorts have found their way into my algorithm and you have inspired me to finally grow my own food. Growing up we always grew our own food but moving into the city has changed that for me. I can't wait to learn again!
Dio mio! Wild animals on the allotment! I live in the woods, so I have hungry groundhogs and deer. I do understand. Perfect timing for me to discover this video, as I’m starting two new raised beds. I’ve saved good cardboard, suspecting it would be useful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I lived in Rome and later, Assisi for quite some time. The fresh, seasonal vegetables were a flight to heaven. I’ll always trust an Italian gardener-you. Grazie tante!
I've been saving cardboard for 3 months, big and small! My daughter and I love your channel,we used to live in East London Snaresbrook and kind of miss it! 🙏😘🫂🔥💚🌱🌱🌱
Hello Spicy Moustache.. i have been a rebal gardener for a number of years (i am not to far from you) your book arrived today, i am currently having a read. Tha k you so much for you time in creating this book and your videos. You sir are a legend
I really love your videos because you explain everything so thoroughly. You say why to do things, not only how to do things. It is really important and helps to understand the whole process. Thank you 💚
Thank you so much for this!! I have been searching high and low for recourses on how to cheaply fill my raised bed so I can plant herbs and I’m so glad I found this video! Thank you so much for making growing your own food more accessible!
I know that the things I've learned from you and your channel I can't use right now, but I plan on using the skills you teach someday. Much love, continue the amazing content!
Amazing, I first came across your shorts, now I'm filling my giant flower bed 💪🏻 would be amazing to get a video on all the things we can grow this time of year in London.
Great video, I will definitely be watching more. I used to have an allotment and I remembered how peaceful it was even when you’re in the middle of town 😊
Again another amazing video!! Me, as someone from the Netherlands, having an Italian girl are so curious about your accent! We've been trying to guess i honestly think Greek? We would love to know! Thanks for teaching me so much! Keep up the good work! 💪🏼
I just discovered your channel and I’m very impressed! I will definitely be buying some of those raised garden beds. Much love and respect from Arizona, US ❤
Here's a tip to scare off the birds: Crows are pretty smart and will figure out that a scarecrow ist actually real. A great alternative is to buy prey bird decoys that are attatched to a stick that fly around in the wind. These decoys are a lot more effective at scaring of birds and are preffered by farmers.
Thank you for this video and sharing your knowledge learning so very much! Much appreciated! I am new here and a few years into gardening! Sincerely...............
I love today's video I just wish where I live they let me have the type of garden like that I would love that but I live in an apartment building and there's very few things I can do or should I say I'm allowed to do but if I ever get my own home I will have that type of garden I love this video
Check for shoots and when you see them coming out of the ground as tiny green shoots it’s time to remove it. Note: they might be pale green almost white at first but they will pick up in colour and shape pretty soon :)
They're perfect for dry areas because the wood holds so much moisture. There are some great Hugelkultur videos of people showing their green beds compared to the surrounding countryside (somewhere got and dry in the US)
If y'all use this method keep in mind that you'll have to fill or top off these beds continuously due to the materials breaking down over time, it basically just spreads out the cost because eventually you will have filled it with soil. It will settle quite a bit for the first few seasons and then slow down a bit just keep in mind that you will need to add more soil year after year 👍👍
@@Tao_Tology The problem is they don't actually make much compost so the soil content will continue to drop 🤦♀️. The system is a good system but people need to be prepared for what ACTUALLY happens, apologies if that offends you 🤷♀️
Do you have issues with ants ? My garrden and my yard is full of them. I layed down cardboard made them worse. We do live in the south. I want to get rid of them naturally. Thanks
Sorry, just cannot see the point of those raised beds, except for gardeners in wheelchairs, or people gardening in a swamp. The cost and environmental impact of all that colourbond steel is out of all proportion to the returns received. The practice of burying big logs and then having to add huge amounts of soil and compost on top to grow in, seems crazy to me. All that heavy work and expense, when you can plant into soil and compost at ground level! Raised beds and hugelculture in such small containers, greatly increase the drainage which means having to water plants daily for months. The metal sides heat up in summer and get frigid in winter, damaging plant roots. The soil at the sides dries out and pulls away leaving big air gaps, or freezes. God created the earth, and the first thing he did for the people he made from it, was to plant a garden in the soil. Gardening best practice. Use the soil! The earth is full of it.
This is a great option for people gardening on concrete, terraces, etc. my whole backyard is on concrete. Also, you will defo not spend a lot of money to fill them up. Hugelkutur retains moisture, helping you to water less. The metal doesn’t over heat or gets cold at all and having raised beds it’s the perfect way to be in full control of your garden regulating what goes inside in case your ground has polluted soil (they work even in open ground). Not everyone has soil and land like you said and it’s good to give people options.
@@SpicyMoustache Yes, those things are certainly true. Probably more true in your milder climate than in Australia, where it has become a real fad for people to think that starting a garden means they have to spend money on these metal beds, even when they have perfectly good soil to start with. And here, I certainly have seen the problems with soils drying out fast and pulling away from the sides of raised beds, because our summers can be so hot with no rain for several months. Then watering every day is necessary, which becomes very expensive, and often there are water bans where watering is not permitted. So in your situation at home, of course you need to use raised beds, and it is just wonderful to see how much you achieve in a difficult environment. But I think novice gardeners may not understand how to determine the best option for their situation, and if money is very tight, the idea that buying commercial raised beds is essential, might be the nail in the coffin for their plans and dreams. I hope you also show how to start garden beds in the soil, now that you have that lovely allotment, so people understand the possibilities.

Keep checking and lift off when you see the shoots 👍🏼

Is the raised beds suitable for growing watermelons and aloe?
Yep they are
Freaking AMAZING, Thank you so much!
Do u sometimes check on the PH level of the Soil or Water that u give your Plants?
Nope. Soil doesn’t need to be tested unless you do grow in hydroponics or other soil less medium
We have billions of chips, but, Douglas Fur. Should I use hard woods? Thank you.
Good information.
Hi great😊
Is there an home made way to make the raise beds?
How long after you built them and added everything were you able to plant?
You can do it right away 👍🏼
I can't wait to own a house

All the more reason to make compost. Even lazy mans compost will make enough to top off each spring.
