      Thank you Daniel. I really hesitated to include music, like in the other video. In some ways I still think that it can complement certain parts of a video, but just in some cases. I do like to create the best experience for everyone though so I'll have to experiment a little. Thank you for your inputs!

      it looks more difficult than just digging the soil actually. what's the reason behind no-dig gardening? wouldn't it be better to prep the soil?

    • @thematrix3663
      @thematrix3663 2 года назад +5

      My understanding is that every time the soil is filled it destroys mini ecosystems and the soil is in a constant state of rebuilding. No till adds rather than takes away. The ultimate is to build the fertility of the soil to a point where little to no amendments will need to be made to have successful harvests.

    Yeah, the cardboard. I started collecting cardboard boxes at the top of my driveway at the beginning of the pandemic back in February. The post office staff and various delivery drivers must have thought I'd turned into some kind of hobo or something. About a month ago when I started spreading the cardboard on my lawn my neighbors must have joined the post office and the delivery drivers thinking I've lost my mind. I now have an 8mx8m space for growing things. Thanks for the video! We're not all crazy :)

      Me too! I've got some collected beside my shed to lay down before winter maybe. Not sure if that's a good idea or just wait until spring and try to keep it dry. Suggestions welcome! I used some this year for onions which worked, plus I started a wildflower meadow circle on my front lawn with just two layers of newspaper then compost: paper doesn't suppress weeds enough!

      @@TerryMcGearyScotland Hi Terry, I'd go ahead and do it now to make absolutely sure that the weeds have croaked by early spring. In my space I'll be covering the exposed spoil that has no plantings with a tarp which I will remove when planting season rolls around.

    Whenever you try something new, keep a usual planted few to compare. The cardboard for me kept the weeds down which I liked. But that section planted in corn seedlings and one section of corn seedlings without cardboard and there was a difference. The ones with the cardboard were yellowish compared to the good green old style way. I carefully pulled out all the cardboard and those plants greened up and caught up to the healthier ones thankfully. I did like your presentation though. And there is much some can learn in just watching you setting things up.

    Awesome video. I am going to try this in my garden this year. Quick question(s) - how thick is the layer of soil? Will this work for pumpkin/ squash/tomato plants too since I assume they have bigger roots? Thank you.

      I think you could check the packet or instructions for planting the seeds and base your soil depth and wood chips on that.

    I like the way you were so passionate to get the video done you carried on despite the rain. With your quality of well rotted compost mulch and garden tools gardening is a cinch at your place. Hope you sell a lot.

    This a very very good idea to prevent weed too.
    You're so smart to get rid of the paperboard too.

    Is the dirt deep enough for the roots to thrive, I thought you were going to make a mound ,impressive

    • @louiekiwi
      @louiekiwi 3 года назад +2

      I think it is just deep enough, but in 6 months it will need topping up, that's how this method works.

      Glad to find others with like-minded mind. I still don't get how little soil he used while others apparently was just into the ASMR aspect of it. I'm looking for the educational aspect.
      If anyone could educate me how this work, please? Is that only for certain crops? Because topping up the soil would rot the crops. Or do you top up the soil after harvest? I'm so confused.

      The roots work through the rotting cardboard into the soil below..connecting to the mychorrizal network and absorbing nutrients. Topping up is done after harvest, usually in winter

    I LOVE this get 'er done method. As a long time avid gardner, I've only recently discovered youtube, and the timesavers! Always been flower/Rose fan, this year going for veggies for the first time. From turning/not turning, raised beds, free base layers, to now.... no dig, plop that baby right on top of cardboard, AND remove the twine??! Boom! Anything is possible....
