- Tacos 1986 is a phenomenon in Los Angeles. Jorge “Joy” Alvarez-Tostado opened the business as a taco stand in November 2018, and he's already opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant that has quickly become one of the best restaurants in LA. Here's how the famous trompo is made for the delicious pork adobada and why Joy is so passionate about this project.

Here in LA, it's like OMG. In Tijuana, it's like on every other corner.
Even in LA it’s really easy to find quality Al Pastor tacos at like half the price.

As a Mexican I am pleased that Mexican food is becoming known around the world greetings friends
VIVA MÉXICO 🇲🇽💓🇺🇸
It’s actually a middle eastern than became a delicacy during the last century, mostly in Germany, Mexico, France , Russia . But the originated centuries ago in the Turkish Lebanese region.
@@Visit_Tangier technique maybe. But flavor no. 🇲🇽 🇺🇸
@@jamesmedina6015 Nothing comparable. In Mexico only pork is used and 90% of the flavors are the same with the pineapple on top. In turkey they have a huge variety of flavors, and they sometimes use beef or chicken, turkey, veal, mouton and even pork for Christians turks. I’ve tried many al pastor in Mexico, they all tast the same, they are not bad at all but they are not even close to the delicousnes of a real doner kebab in Germany made by Turks. And nothing comparable if you visit Istanbul, you will see what flavor means.
Sorry, but the Mexican version of the doner ( al pastor is a bad imitation of the original )
@@Visit_Tangier As a Catholic I’m sure I’ll never make it to Turkey 🇹🇷. Maybe if it becomes Constantinople. Mexican food is # 1. But I’ll keep an open mind on food from the Middle East.
@@jamesmedina6015 Why won’t you go to turkey because of being catholic? I’m a non-practicing Catholic and the Catholic community of istanbul is quiet big and thriving. They are many Catholic Churches in Istanbul and all over turkey. It’s quiet extreme to not visit a country just because it’s not fully Catholic “if that’s what you meant by your comment”
Regarding your opinion about Mexican food being number one, I won’t judge as taste are different from each person. Although, I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world and have been able to try food in many countries.
I have had really good things in Mexico like colchinita Pibil, different types of moles, and I really like how the arrachera steak is marinated and grilled. The taste of that steak was memorable!
Although, I thing that Mexican food along with Argentinian and Peruvian are the best of both south and North America. I’m Salvadorian and our food shares many similarities with Mexican cuisine.
But as a food lover I don’t consider the American continent as a place for food travelers/lovers like me.
As for many American cuisines, the variety of spices in Mexican cuisine is very restricted but I was very impressed by the number of different chilies that can be found in Mexican cuisine. From the big, small, thin, sweet, dry, fresh etc.
For me, Mexican food is really number one for chillies !
I live in LA for 40 years love my hometown and thank you for showing our multi ethnic culture and good eats.

Nah its super cringe and I'm dying of secondhand embarrassment
honestly these tacos are good but, you can just drive across a bridge into east LA and get better tacos for half the price. This place is taking advantage of those that don't know any better.
u right lmaoo, but u gotta admit its smart on their part
They got charm
Tacos los poblanos
Business model. So I don’t blame them. Can’t be a charity if you’re selling a product.
Taking advantage or charging whats fair for a downtown lease? Dont be a hater please, i know what you mean but this is why everyone expects to pay 80s Mexican food prices, bet you 90% of those places don't make fresh tortillas.
Lease, huge staff, time invested into preparation amd product; few are using diesmillo for their carne asada.
Authentic tacos use the cheapest cuts to be honest but then you get those that complain about "gristle" please carne asada simply means grilled meat or beef not steak. Some peope want steak for $1 or $2. Get real!

You need to accompany those tacos with a Mexican Coca Cola.
Francisco Delgado have you try tacos de al pastor con agua de horchata?? 👀 just saying 🤷🏻♂️
Alejandro Cerna they’re 💯 better with a Coke. The cola flavor ignites the spices. Horchata tends to quench the flame.

That's a cool beautiful producer hosting this. really adds value to this wonderful food video❤️❤️
Been there, they're good, not great. Wouldn't go out of my way again. Leave it to the hipsters in DTLA.
You dont know what you are talking about, Downtown LA is where is at for tacos.
I am Mexican and just to start, you don't put guacamole on the taco al pastor, I don't care his style Mexicans just don't do it... period. so that mean those tacos are not the best, neither a good ones...
I can't stand his arrogance either, the best ones are not the ones who say they are the best themselves, it's the others who say it, unfortunately in the USA you don't have as many options as in Mexico to eat tacos if he were in Mexico he probably wouldn't even be at the top 10 of the best in their own city ... believe me there are incredible tacos in Mexico with more humble people
I agree. They were not good at all. The tortillas tasted like they added way to much baking soda or salt. Wouldn’t recommend.

This is the sharwarma's Mexican cousin. Tacos al pastor, tacos arabes, tacos de adobada (so named in Northwest Mexico) are essentially the same thing with seasoning variations they are not specific to Tijuana. The approach is a standard across Mexico. The vertical spit cooking is the main differentiation and clue to the Levantine origins of this amazing variation on tacos.
Shawarma (from the Turkish word "çevirme" - to spin) and döner (another word for spin) is originally from Turkey. From North-East and Ankara (capital city). Arab countries got it during the ottoman empire.
@@meralozdemir551 except we use pork in Mexico 😉

The Lebanese did bring it in to Mexico! Their is a massive lebanese population down in Mexico!
the taco al pastor is 100% Mexican, in the tacos al pastor the only thing Lebanese is the rotisserie, what was adopted from the Lebanese foreigners was the way to put the meat vertically in the form of a spinning top and rotate it on the fire. Because it should be remembered that: Muslims do not eat pork; In addition, ingredients such as nixtamalized corn for tortillas or achiote and chili peppers to marinate the meat, all of them are native ingredients of Mexico, the Arabs do not eat pork and less marinate their meat with very hot chili peppers and the tortilla is a totally indigenous food from pre-Columbian times. The tacos al pastor were not brought from the east, what we do adopt from the east is the way to put the meat on a top. But the preparation and everything else no, People say that because in the al pastor tacos the Arab rotisserie is used, apart from because the Mexican tacos resemble shawarma, they are two similar dishes that work in the same way but both have no historical or cultural connection at all
At first I was like: "Nice Döner Kebab", but then I saw Tacos and my interest turned into attention.

Look for 'tacos al pastor' or 'tacos de trompo' they are the most popular tacos in Mexico. They come from Puebla, Mexico and were influenced by a Lebanese dish called 'shawarma'. They're also known as 'döner kebab' in Turkey and 'gyros' in Greece.

do lebanese use pork and pineapple?
Lebanese brought it to Mexico but the Mexicans used pork instead of lamb
edmundo oliver Nah I meant how they stack the meat on the rack. I’ve seen same done with beef , lamb, chicken
Lebanese and turkey make them the same trompo or meat stack but Mexico added the pork with the hot sauce and chili and pineapple or if you want to make them with lam they are called tacos arabes

@@brian1436 nope. Tacos in Baja are "adobada" not "pastor". Adobada is spicier and does not have pineapple. Mountains of pure mashed avocado (not guac per se) are the norm in Tijuana. I've tried these they're ok but just below average if you compare to any taco in TJ. The only thing whitefied is the price and venue.
Thats al pastor only DF does that adobo is good to but al pastor on trompo better
