    I love the way you covered this man. Always comprehensive and detailed. For people who want to do this regularly and all over the place in random locations, it's worth buying one of those wifi routers that have a sim card slot. Then get a sim card and register it as a data-only plan. I recently set up one for the local shop after comms went down for weeks following local flooding. This way you can plug ethernet from atem and laptop into the router and live-stream via the sim card. Also, unlike with tethering your phone, you don't have apps in the background using your internet connection while you're trying to livestream. I plan on getting one of these routers for myself so I can roam around doing live-stream events for businesses.

    Fantastic. Great video Joseph. It was s so detailed. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to have a SIM Slot for the ATEM Mini, who knows. But for now this works great!. What I've been doing lately is using a 4G Router which has multiple Network ports to connect more than one device.
    I'm planning on getting an ATEM Mini PRO or ISO. Still feeling a little bit hesitant on streaming form the ATEM instead of my computer. Been too attached to OBS Studio for a while.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  3 года назад +1

      If you’re using OBS for titling or anything like that, then that’s totally understandable. However if you’re just using it for live streaming, then I highly recommend jumping to the hardware encoder of the ATEM!

    • @Eddy04tv
      @Eddy04tv 3 года назад

      @@photojoseph I only use the ATEM Mini for the Switch. Everything else I'm doing from OBS. Titling, Animations, Lower thirds, Replay ( I also do sports) and extra tweaks. Personally ATEM somewhat feels daunting and I've been watching your videos to ramp up.
      I really want to make a more professional live content and perhaps using ATEM might get me there. Also wrapping my head on how to still implement OBS if streaming from ATEM.
      Btw, in your experience is there any benefit streaming from ATEM Mini vs. PC? Network efficiency, bitrate and reliability wise?

      Hmm. Good question. The USB protocol switches decoding what you plug in. You can use a hub for multiple drives, but not to go to a drive and to the computer. Since it’d be sending the compressed data to the phone, that’s probably the same protocol as connecting to a computer and not to a hard drive but I don’t actually know. You’ll have to test it!

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  3 года назад +2

      You certainly can, as the mobile upload speed is likely quite a bit slower and less reliable than a high speed land connection. You really want a very good signal, and as fast a connection as possible of course. You should always measure your upload speed using an app like SpeedTest, and test from exactly where you’ll stream, then set an encoding bitrate well under that. I’d say half should be OK.

    When connecting directly to the switcher with ethernet from a Windows PC both the PC and the ATEM use APIPA adresses so no additional IP configuration is required

      Really! What the heck is APIPA? “Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) is a feature in operating systems (such as Windows) that enables computers to automatically self-configure an IP address and subnet mask when their DHCP server isn't reachable.” - very interesting but it also seems like this was removed from macOS a decade ago? Maybe security reasons? Very interesting!

    Great video PhotoJoseph! I have a question that may fit within the context of your video.
    BACKGROUND: We stream our worship services live. I currently use an ATEM Mini Extreme, connected to PC via USB. PC is hardwire connect to network switch. We use four blackmagic cameras, three are hardwired to ATEM and one is connected via Hollyland wireless transmitter. For Tally for the wireless cam, we just bought a CUEBI wireless tally - but I realized that in order to connect to ATEM, both the cuebi and the PC have to be connected to my router (which for streaming purposes, I do not want to connect PC to router). We do not stream directly from ATEM. We use Livestream Studio.
    QUESTION: The cuebi connects via wifi. Here's the kicker - even with PC connected to network switch, cuebi cannot communicate with ATEM, even though atem is connected via ethernet to router, as well as cuebi connected via wifi to said router. May be a long shot question but here goes - Is there a work around in order to maintain my hardwire connection to my network switch, using THAT connection to live stream, but somehow to get the cuebi to connect to ATEM without use of a router?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 года назад

      I don't totally follow. Why not have everything on the network; PC, ATEM, Livestream Studio and the CUEBI? Wouldn't that resolve the issue? You're referring to the hardware Livestream Studio right? So the stream happens from there; so what if everything else is on the network, too? I haven't used the CUEBI but it appears that it has to be on the the same network as the ATEM, just via WiFi, right? So again, just put everything on the network, no?

    • @ApostolicLifeChurch
      @ApostolicLifeChurch 2 года назад

      @@photojoseph Well, I do not want to stream from router - I'd need to hardwire directly into network switch. In order for cuebi to work, it'd need to connect to router via wifi. If I connect the ATEM to the router via ethernet, and also connect to computer via usb (said computer would also be connected to network switch), the atem does NOT read the router network IP address...it is picking up the network that the PC is connected to.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 года назад

      I don’t follow. By “bridge”, do you mean the ATEM Streaming Bridge? If so you’ll need to explain what you’re trying to do. Ethernet should connect to your network switch, as should your computer, ideally also over Ethernet. Wifi should be avoided if possible.

    Your videos are terrific. I have subscribed. I have a live event coming up, super simple...one camera on the main speaker, one camera on a WS as a fall-back (OMG) shot and a PowerPoint presentation. My boss is most worried about the internet connection since we'll be in a building with not much AV support and questionable internet connectivity but we are in a city so we do have pretty good cell service. I'm planning to use an Teradek, VidiU Go with two nodes, connected to the CORE service feeding the various web streaming services. So, I'm covered on potential signal loss. I'll have a ATEM Mini Extreme. One HMDI out will feed by monitor for Multi-view. The other HDMI out will feed an Atomos Shogun to record a Pro-Res version of the live event. One USB-C will connect the ATEM to my Mac computer. So, question: how do I connect this set-up to the VidiU Go...via an Ethernet cable? Via the other USB-C output on the ATEM? Or should I use one of the HDMI out's to feed the VidiU Go and use the Other USB-C out on the ATEM to record the show on to a fast SSD? This is the one big thing that I find SO confusing about live streaming. Thanks.

    • @photojoseph

If the primary connection is slowed down not allowing a good streaming, does the switch happen on the secondary line anyway? Maybe you can set a threshold not to exceed via software? In any case for me, having two connections to the atem is enough to buy it. Thank you for your tips

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 года назад +1

      That’s actually a really interesting question. I’ve only tested it with a complete disconnect; I don’t know if it’ll switch over if it simply has not enough throughput. You can download the user guide from Blackmagic website. Just go to the Support page and search for the ATEM. You can download the installer which includes the manual, even if you don’t yet have the hardware. As far as I know, it will only switch on a disconnect, and there definitely is no threshold setting. But I don’t know if it’ll switch if the bandwidth is simply too low.

    Wow this is next level stuff! I had no idea the Atem Pro could connect directly to a cell phone for streaming, I thought only the Yolobox could do that. I wonder if you could do a comparison in what the dropouts would be on a live stream if you lost the facility's connection and went to your mobile as a backup using the Atem's setup vs. a fully bonded internet solution such as a standalone box or Speedify on a Raspberry PI.
    Also can you use this same type of direct to computer ethernet connection to get the Atem on a local WiFi network, for example if you're at a church or event space that has WiFi but no ethernet access? I had no idea you could connect two devices this way without a special ethernet crossover cable, which are difficult to find these days.

      By the way, you might want to let your viewers know - apparently Blackmagic in their latest software update changed the RUclips preset in the ATEM Control Software from "RUclips" to "RUclips RTMP" - when I selected "RUclips" I couldn't choose from Streaming Low, Medium or High. It drove me bonkers, until I saw a Blackmagic forum post from a user who said that you have to select the *new* preset "RUclips RTMP" and *then* you can see the streaming low, medium or high settings. Literally the only settings I could select before was "Hyperdeck High" "Hyperdeck Low" or "Hyperdeck Medium".

    That is not a private ip range. It risks part of the internet being unavailable. I would have used 192.168.100.x with a subnet of 255.255.255.0.
