This video was great. Here are a few bits of information about two of the songs: 1. Hallelujah is about love and loss; it isn't about religion. 2. Feelin' Good was written for the London show "The Roar of the Greasepaint; The Smell of the Crowd" by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, the two writers of Candy Man from the movie Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That song is about freedom and winning against the odds. The original version is much softer. Thanks for this video!
Moulin rouge, rhapsody in blue, literally anything by Chopin, Schindler’s list, phantom of the opera off the top of my head- I love them all but after the 5th program I’m a little tired
Would love to hear your thoughts on what music more skaters should listen to! I would die of happiness if someone did a (good) program to any of these: 1) Lord of the Rings movie soundtrack - there’ve been two programs that I know of, but the choreography/music editing were uninspired and didn’t tell the story 2) Star Wars - there’s more out there than the Cantina song! Across the Stars would make for the most exquisite, dramatic, romantic pairs/dance program 3) I want to see more popular music in other languages. For example, there was a super popular band called Beyond that was basically the Beatles of Hongkong/China - if we can have a dozen Queen programs, someone could do at least one Beyond program.
The most promising but untouched property as far as figure skating music goes is anime. And considering how dominant japan is, it is suprising that ghibli and sailor moon arent warhorses yet...
I've only been following figure skating closely for about a year, but these are my favorite original/original-ish programs: - Nathan Chen's Land of All (Woodkid) - Scherbakova's Forgiveness - Yuna's James Bond - Roman Sadovsky's Chasing Cars (not the most original song, but I love how he used it) - Shibutanis' Paradise - And of course Yuzu's Parisienne Walkways (I have more but I can't think of them off the top of my head) I would love to see people skate to pieces like: - The Breakfast Club soundtrack (but it would have to be someone who would do it right!) - Gymnopédie No. 1 (the Ray Chen quartet version) - Upbeat non-English songs like something by Veronica Maggio - The Piano Guys It's hard to think of pieces I would like to see because half of my playlist is literally straight from figure skating programs. :)
As a former competitive skater, occasional judge and now spectator - NEVER skate to piano music and NEVER, NEVER skate to lyrics!!!!! *There was GOOD reason that used to be illegal - it supplies FALSE emotion to the skate (making a judging conundrum) AND it can dilute the skate IF the singer reaches greater heights than the skater - AVOID LYRICS!!
I absolutely disagree about avoiding songs with lyrics. First, it really limits your choices. Second, I think a lot of instrumental music is boring. And why do you consider judging a conundrum? It's not any different than whether or not the skater can skate to the level of an instrumental piece. At least if there's lyrics with a boring skater, it's less boring than if the boring skater has boring instrumental music.
@@trylogic4084 - It would appear you've answered your own question and illustrated exactly my point: "at least if there's lyrics with a boring skater it's less boring"! ... you're referencing my point of ascribing false emotion, that you've felt made a boring skate less boring - you've given weight and credence to the "lift" of the lyrics v.s. the skate itself. This can subconsciously as well be prescribed to the judging/scoring which can make a conundrum in judging if ones not careful or expert. As I said, this was forbidden in the rules FAR longer than lyrics have been allowed ... with good reason. Look at the "quality" of programs of the past century compared to those of the present century, they illustrate this brilliantly. Let your skating shine and impress, NOT the singer or his lyrics. Look at the list and ranks of Olympic Gold medalists and denote which of them won Olympic Gold with lyrics ... I think that would be very telling for you.
It's a subject worth a two-part video. Although I love Les Miserables, Scheherazade, Hallelujah and Zorba (the other pieces not so much), it's about time to retire them and explore something different. Athletes could use a well known song just for its melody as one male athlete has skated to "Who Wants To Live Forever" not too long ago. That would be a refreshing option. If the audience are bored with the same music, imagine the judges... Good job, thank you.
Thanks for using two of my suggestions from the comments of the first video (Exogenesis and Hallelujah). If Asher gets to go to Montreal, there is a huge mural of Leonard Cohen on a building and I hope to be able to see it again post Covid as I am in NY. I found it hilarious that Dylan has skated to many war horses but I have not seen a Zorba program lately, which is probably a good thing!

Sweet disposition by the temper trap. There’s many Bon Iver songs that would be really nice to skate to as well.
People definitely need to stop skating to the hit song from the previous year's hit musical, because by the time the season comes around everyone is sick of it (Shallow, La La Land, etc.). I think that His Dark Materials TV show has a great opening credits score that would make an excellent short programme choice. Also, people shouldn't be afraid of digging deeper into catalogues. Yes, Prince has been done, but at least Tessa and Scott used one lesser-used song. Use the other songs from a musical, etc.

@@startblk101 Loves your show, but y’all did say, “Tessa and Scott crushed it ...” I wish Tessa and Scott had done something different in an Olympic year. Moulin Rouge had been overdone by 2018.
In terms of music that should be skated to more, I think that early-70's Prog Rock like Pink Floyd is a genre that seems to be waiting to be mined. Prog was heavily influenced by classical music and often has long instrumental sections so it would appear to be an ideal alternative.
I haven't watched Part 1 yet but how could you not mention Carmen? (You probably did in Part 1!) Bestemianova and Bukin killed it at the 1985 Worlds but Debi Thomas & Katarina Witt both skating to it in 1988 was just too much. I'm feeling the same way about Bolero. Hallelujah has become nauseating. There wasn't a season of X Factor or The Voice or American Idol or America's Got Talent where it wasn't performed - apparently because it is Simon Cowell's favorite song. Enough! Dylan, your coaches back in the day must have had one small box of records they carried around labeled "Music the Judges are Familiar With." One of my personal favorite programs when it comes to music was Elladj Balde skating to Blood Diamonds. I found it moving to see him tap into his African heritage and bring that to the ice.
Also, I'm still waiting for someone to skate again to Tonya Harding's 1991/92 Short Program choice, "People Are Still Having Sex", especially now that vocals are allowed.
What about Yanni? One US championship held in Providence, every other woman skated to a song by Yanni. Maybe this was before your time, but for a while Yanni was the rage to skate to. And he was not that great.☹️

I've never much liked Scheherazade anyway. At least Les Mis is good music, but even good music gets old and needs a rest after awhile. Hallelujah's saving grace if there is one is that there are so many different versions and at least some of them are rather different interpretations so there's at least some variety in the repetition. He's really great. His musical interpretations of classics are wonderful, but yeah, overdone. There's other great male singers out there! Je suis malade? and Muse? I guess I'm out of it because I don't remember ever hearing these used in skating routines. Titanic. Yeah. We can be done with that for awhile. Please. Zorba the Greek? This is not a good choice for figure skating to begin with... Just no. Dr. Zhivago. Done. Done. Done. And it's just a bit overweeningly melodramatic.
Stop giggling!
You’re my gyro.
Add Michael Jackson to your list.
Bolero and blues for klook need to go!!!
I actually enjoy these programs. But only from the best (i.e. Kostner and Sui/Han pair version).
Not Blues for Klook. I'm still dreaming about Olympic gold medal performance with this music, hope the music itself won't be butchered as today's skaters usually do
The Muse song was best by Ashley Wagner. Medvedeva, not so much.
