15:30 I had spent the last 13 years as an atheist. Now I can happily say that my wife, my kids, and myself were baptized into our local Orthodox parish 3 weeks ago this Saturday.
Where can you find Christ's body? Is it real and truly present in the Eucharist and in those who partake? Who did Christ give the command to "do this in remembrance"? Is there continuity between any institutions on Earth and the apostles who recieved Christ's commandments and the great commission? Does that institution still hold to the ideals, beliefs, and practice of the apostles? Would the apostles recognize it? Sounds like The Orthodox church.
I spent half of my life as a Muslim, and now I'm planning to become a catechumen next year. It was you, Mr. Pageau, that inspired me to learn about Orthodoxy. Please keep up the good work and God Bless.

As a life long agnostic the shutting down of churches during the lockdown was the first time I had ever stood in solidarity with any religious group. Now that has lead me down the path of exploring the faith in earnest.
What a wonderful thing to be celebrating. I'm a new Orthodox Catechumen. It wasn't COVID that brought me to the faith, though I'm sure it had an influence. If I had to pin it on one thing or person, it would be Jordan Peterson. Specifically his biblical lectures. For most of my life I was an atheist, God forgive me, and I was very anti-religious. But as I grew older, and found myself unable to cope with my life choices and the world I was participating in, Jordan Peterson's talks began to open my eyes. His talks on Genesis cracked open my heart and mind to God, and began to convince me that there was much MUCH more to God and Scripture than I ever knew. But, I only sought out Jordan Peterson because of the completely failed culture we live in. I couldn't explain why, but I began to hate the crass consumerism, the pathetic and passive aggressive politics (particularly of the left), and the worship of technology and science, which seemed to create more problems than it solved. I began to hate my own conduct and thoughts, knowing, somehow, that much of my life was going in the wrong direction. I'm still learning, but I'm ever so thankful for voices like Jonathan's and Father Josiah's, who, after Jordan Peterson, continued to build the bridge, so to speak. Online Orthodoxy, for all its pitfalls, is what finally convinced me to attend Liturgy and meet my spiritual father. Two months later I began catechism. While there are many questions that are still unanswered, many sins I have yet to fully grasp and repent for, I am glad to be on the path. God bless you both, and may God grant us many years and many more catechumens. Personally I'm hoping more women get in on it. haha I think the majority of us catechumens are single and male. XD
I, too, spent a few years in the "Jordan Peterson waiting room" on my way from atheism into Orthodoxy. As I've met more new converts, I've discovered that this phenomenon is actually quite common. Hopefully, our experience will continue to become less unique and pull more people into the church!

I'm Serbian Orthodox and I enjoy listening to Fr. Josiah. I'm happy to know that Orthodox Christianity is getting bigger and bigger in North America and that many people are converting. Us Serbs suffered so much from NATO bombing and West & American politics in previous years. Please keep us in your minds and prayers and don't let that repeat.
Bravo, real people. From my perspective, America experienced its greatest prosperity and became the 'promised land' when it had the strongest belief in God and adhered to moral principles. I am an Orthodox Christian from Serbia, and I would like to tell you about one of our cultural traditions connected to Christianity. In Serbia, every family celebrates a specific saint as the protector of their home on that saint's feast day. It's a family gathering where you can also invite friends to share a meal together. I would be interested to hear your opinion on this tradition in relation to biblical teachings in one of your upcoming shows. Today is my family's saint feast day, Saint Nicholas. God bless you.
I totally agree. Much of Protestantism is rationalism. The Protestant Reformation coincided with the so-called Age of Reason and matured during the Enlightenment.
Regarding how many Orthodox Bishops does it take to change a light bulb joke, I have been reading the Desert Fathers. And a fictional answer based on that would be, the answer given makes sense because they decided it was too luxurious to have a light bulb, and so they became grateful that the light bulb had been taken away from them, so that they could remember it is dark in the world, and that Christ is our light, and so they returned to their prayers.
I’ll be honest because this is a very common mistake, a joke should be funny. It should reflect reality but with a twist of witty remark that’ll make you laugh. It shouldn’t be preachy. If not, you loose the audience. 😊
Yes, at minute 45 or so, is the same thing an elderly priest explained to me-that when we confess and repent (of a temptation or bad habit) repeatedly and all the while repenting or turning away from it-at some point God simply takes it away! Then we can go on with what God reveals to us. The more foundational sin we can repent of, the more outgrowths of it we’ll be free from.
I completely agree. Things will get better when they have to acknowledge God. You can’t meditate and pretend it’s science, there should always be complete understanding of the “diety” you are worshipping before you engage in spiritual practice.

Please set up a conversation with Jordan Peterson and Father Josiah Trenham. I feel two of my worlds are colliding right now. It would be really fun to see the father go on the Bible lectures as well.
They have met in the past just no recorded curated convo as far as I can see. Going to a Peterson show in Riverside in 2019(2018 🤔?) is when I took the opportunity to check out St Andrew, Fr Josiah’s church. I then became a catechumen and became baptized in 2022. My only advice to people is to avoid rigorism and focus on the useful parts of the rules and not get too bogged down in performative piety. Use th good parts of it; Fr Josiah is right, endure yourself. Some people are already prone to religious OCD so just be careful not to be too harsh on yourself, the good thing is that Orthodoxy does provide needed rigor compared to Protestantism. Just don’t burn out or forget Gods love and grace, that’s just my advice for what it’s worth 🤷♀️
I truly am extremely curious at how future Western Orthodoxy will be influenced by it's latter culture. Seeing testimonies of those that come from the Balkans, Russia and Greece, we see how these peoples have been influenced/affected externally by the politics or conquests by external powers. There's lots of works and advances done by great Western intellectuals, I suspect these advances won't get erased from common memory but adopted by these cultures, giving to them a new foundational pilar through which growth shall stem from.
Pre covid - we were dependent on the clergy to lead us to faith Post covid - we decide to take it onto ourselves to learn & find the faith ...There are 3 reasons for this I think: 1. Scandals of the clergy made us verify 1st before trusting them 2. Atheists forcing us to move from just feelings to using science & logic to find our faith 3. The years of fear & uncertainty that came from covid
I wonder if Jonathan Pageau was asking on the behalf of Jordan Peterson with that qurstion around 50:00. I think he was trying to ask what the common pattern is for getting people like Jordan into the Church
I converted to Orthodoxy in June of 2020 and am a member at a Greek Orthodox parish in Omaha,Nebraska. My cathechesis as a chatecuhman happened during covid. Before this, I was more of an inquirer from 2018-jan 2020. Fr. Josiah has been a blessing to me as I did a lot of solo reading my priest assigned me to do. We had some one on one in person before covid bans. I wish we could have catechism classes like what is happening at his parish. If I were any less committed as a Christian at the time of my conversion, I'm not sure I'd still be Orthodox. The support from clergy and parishoners is highly lacking. This doesn't seem to be an isolated issue in the Orthodox church due to the ethnic divisons and structure of authority among parishes. I was hesitant to commit to an Antiochian parish due to large amount of converts as I wanted to be around Orthodox Christians from birth to learn the way of life. Thank you for everything you two are doing to help bring awareness to Orthodox Christianity in America.
Most cradle Orthodox are not as devout as converts. They're the ones only coming during Holy Week and the ethnic festivals. Consider yourself blessed that you're with other converts who have the curiosity, energy, and drive to expand their faith inward. Not trying to put people in boxes here, but the ethnic dominated parish is not ideal.
Before the war, there were 2.5 million indigenous Christians living peacefully in Syria or 10% of the population. Since the US & its allies began funding and arming terrorists in Syria in 2011, the indigenous Christian population has fallen to less than 500,000.
I find it psychologically quite interesting that the youth in traditionally orthodox countries (Serbia, Greece, Russia etc.) isn't particularly fascinated by Orthodoxy and their religious participation is declining while the Eastern Orthodox Church in America is growing. There are also some funny trends like Buddhism declining in Asia while Christianity (Catholic and Protestant mostly) is growing and Iranians claiming they're Zoroastrian to protest the Shia regime.
Dont forget that we, Balkans and Russia were comunist country. The Church was forniden. The Prists were making fun of them. So 40 or 50 year of that does damage. But we still have young people in Church, we still have Monks, so we are not lost entiraly. Lots of love from Macedonian Ortodox !
30:15 Similarly to how the church makes us feel better, I have noticed how videos such as this one make me feel better, even though by any objective measure they should not be any more interesting than other RUclips discussions about more “interesting” things such as politics, science and technology. In fact, any analysis I could make of this video would tell me it is boring and does not provide any useful information. Yet I feel that it did me some good, whereas those other videos might grip my attention but then mostly just abandon me. Evidently, putting the cross first works in all domains (even though it’s only a low tech piece of dull ordinary wood…).
Even as a Protestant it always blew my mind when some…not all…but some would say, the church should not be elaborate or have “beauty”; Christ spoke out against showy rich people. My mind always went to how God wanted His temple adorned with gold and beauty. Apparently somewhere in the reformation He changed His mind…
1:14:57 interestingly it’s not the polytheistic Hinduism that’s rising. There are bridges to build here. Advaita Vedanta (Ramaswamy) emphasizes philosophical monotheism and unity with the divine. Vaishnavism (Usha Vance) focuses on devotion to Vishnu/Krishna as the Supreme Being. Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Gabbard) blends monotheistic devotion with ritualistic and meditative practices centered on Krishna.
Thanks for these vital tidbits-where can we read more in depth? On the Buddhist side, Fr Seraphim Rose’s book Christ the Eternal Tao explains that in Buddhist & Taoist temples is an altar before the main temple. It’s dedicated to Shang Ti, the one true God. This original monotheism predated polytheism & tradition, having begun in the Hsin, the first dynasty.
I’m Catholic but love the Orthodox Church . The Orthodox stick more to tradition and Catholics looks like are waved bit too much to the do call “progress “. The progress imply something better , positive but I think what really is I would call it “ change “ and not really for anything better . I’m attending Latin Traditional Mass in small Ontario community . The positive thing I see is …lot of young people attending! Thank you . God Bless !
No change in the Orthodox traditions or belief's? "The Church also understands that not everything is perfectly clear; therefore, it has always accepted a fair amount of contention about certain issues, arguments about certain points, as something that will always be present within the Church. It is this contention which, through time, clarifies the truth. The Church sees this as the action of the Holy Spirit on history to manifest truth to man."
Pageau is one of the few proposing more work in class, to obviate “CheatGPT”. I suggested to a college prof at a dinner, who decried students’ abuse of Ai, that he have all tests in-person, and no take-home projects for credit. I remember taking the Ordinary Level exams in England in late 1970’s and they were 2-3 hour epics! You either had the knowledge by then, or washed out.

So many strands of wisdom in here. Thank you
Wonderful talk, thank you!!☦️
Thank you gentlemen.
Great video, Jonathan. I love Fr. Josiah's videos.
Thank you so much for this discussion, Father and Jonathan !
Our church is within us in our home and Jesus , God we fear and love.
What an absolutely fantastic discussion!
Thank you for your leadership.
With love from a Serbian orthodox sinner :) Jovan !
Wow what a great and timely interview!
Greetings from Serbia.Wonderfull interview.Thank you.
Have more clergy on. This was brilliant as always.
Having to endure yourself was a great quote, I can relate.
God bless Fr. Josiah, his parish and family, and all those Jonathan is able to touch in his modern ministry! ☦️
Потрясающе. Отец Иосия выглядит совершенно, как классический русский священник.
Это ортодоксальная культура христаинства
This was an excellent watch! Love both of you ❤
Former Protestant now Orthodox. I found Christ in His Church, I found life, a living faith versus a rationalist faith.
I totally agree. Much of Protestantism is rationalism. The Protestant Reformation coincided with the so-called Age of Reason and matured during the Enlightenment.
What, specifically, makes your faith living now that you didn’t have before? Thanks
@@cre8509reread my original post you responded to, there lies the answer
God bless you all
Regarding how many Orthodox Bishops does it take to change a light bulb joke, I have been reading the Desert Fathers. And a fictional answer based on that would be, the answer given makes sense because they decided it was too luxurious to have a light bulb, and so they became grateful that the light bulb had been taken away from them, so that they could remember it is dark in the world, and that Christ is our light, and so they returned to their prayers.
I love this.
Glory to God
Amin
Perfect answer 😂
I’ll be honest because this is a very common mistake, a joke should be funny. It should reflect reality but with a twist of witty remark that’ll make you laugh. It shouldn’t be preachy. If not, you loose the audience. 😊
The growth we have seen is just amazing! We now have 125 Orthodox in USA. Soon we may have 130!
So awesome....many interesting and important topics.
Absolutely wonderful guidance for me personally
I needed to hear this today. Thank you both so much! God bless! 🙏
Wow this was so good. I would love more discussions with you two! Thank you ❤🙏
Yes, at minute 45 or so, is the same thing an elderly priest explained to me-that when we confess and repent (of a temptation or bad habit) repeatedly and all the while repenting or turning away from it-at some point God simply takes it away!
Pray for the Orthodox Church of Finland. Our new archbishop wants to expand discussion on female priesthood and other progressive topics.
The goal is to find pretext to outlaw Orthodoxy in Finland, I guess. They see it as a Russian cultural influence.
What?!? Oh, good grief! The other bishops need to issue a statement to shut it down!
@@mamafortuin
The Orthodox church of Finland belongs to the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Bart plans to reunite with Pope Francis at the Council of Nicea in 2025.
@@mamafortuin We have a good bishop, Metropolitan Arseni, who has opposed these progressive efforts and the previous archbishop issued harassment complaints against him.
Then they won’t be orthodox for long
God bless you all!
Impressive conversation. 🙏
Cheers from a fellow Roman Orthodox Syrian.
It makes me so happy to see the church flourishing in America.
Brother is everything good there i read here in Greece that turkish backed jihadists just took over Syria.
Lord have mercy on the suffering Christians in Syria. I hope it doesn't get worse. 😢
Father Turbo from The Royal Path touched on exactly the same point regarding the Hindus being appointed right now
Time stamp?
It's late for me tonight, it's a long video, & I'll probably forget about it tomorrow... what did they mean by that?
Yes! I'd love to hear him in conversation with Jonathan as well. I think they could go down some interesting paths.
Found it, it’s by the end : 1:14:40
@PaulaODowd Thank you!
Father Josiah's parish is over flowing with young men I am there and one of them haha
I totally enjoyed this chat. Looking for a spiritual home. Will be seeking out my local orthodoxy community.
Looking forward to the American Orthodox film.
Glory to The God The Savior our Lord Jesus Christ!
Very insightful, good to know people are coming from darkness to the light of the Truth.
As a practical matter, beauty ennobles-and a homeless man can come into a church and have his life lifted.
Mery Christmas to you both wonderful people🙏✨️✨️ Love from Greece 🇬🇷 🩵
God has blessed two great minds. Thank you.
Pre covid - we were dependent on the clergy to lead us to faith
Post covid - we decide to take it onto ourselves to learn & find the faith
...There are 3 reasons for this I think:
1. Scandals of the clergy made us verify 1st before trusting them
2. Atheists forcing us to move from just feelings to using science & logic to find our faith
They will be back. Orthodoxy does not offer too much for teenagers or young adults.
I cant wait for a telsabot :D
The late Father Gordon Walker of Tennessee used to say: “Keep walking toward the altar. … Keep going to confession.”
In my opinion, as a 2021 convert, 2016-2020 primed the pump of the people who ended up showing up in Orthodoxy once covid hit.
You two are favored folk - thank you for letting us into your conversation & dialogue 🙏🏼
❤ showing love from Ethiopia orthodox!
I was also an atheist before becoming Christian
Thank you . God Bless !
Thanks so much for your generosity jonathan. Could you recommend a book about memory?
I read a good book on memory but I forgot the name of it
