People nowadays usually miss the point of a music video, but I usually don't enjoy music videos at all. I like to visualize it on my own and think about how the music makes me feel and what I picture when I hear it, but this video is a great little slice of the Beach Boys.

If I remember right, they got told this song was gonna be on Top of the Pops, or whatever that old UK show was called, and they needed a video for this song.
So they just spent a lazy afternoon screwing around in Brian's backyard and this was the result.

One of the early videos I saw on MTV was "Life of Illusion" by Joe Walsh, which was just him and a camera crew goofing around in a junkyard. It's fun to watch, sort of like Little Rascals shorts. Sophistication gets tiring after you've seen it a few thousand times.

I can remember as a kid I was about 12 or 13 and I took some music course in school. This is the one of only two songs I remember the teach playing over and over. This and Winchester Cathedral. It was like 78 or 79 and I simply loved both songs big time. I had no idea who the artist’s were but I remember getting my allowance and having my pops help me find them. Being a DJ in the 60’s and early 70’s he had no problem finding them. I still love both too this day.

I was at a Boy Scout camp with my friends this past week. We all enjoy singing, and we all hated the food and the bugs there, so I thought it'd be fun for us all to sing this. I taught everyone the harmonies and whatnot. A week passes, and on the last night (barbeque night) the camped played this song. Well don't you know it, my five guys stood up on the benches and belted it out. It was awesome!

We come on the sloop John B
    My grandfather and me
Around Nassau town we did roam
    Drinking all night
    Got into a fight
Well I feel so broke up
    I want to go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
    See how the mainsail sets
    Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I wanna go home, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up
    I wanna go home
The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the Cap'n's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
    Sheriff John Stone
Why don't you leave me alone, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up I wanna go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
    See how the mainsail sets
    Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home

Why don't you let me go home

    Hoist up the John B
I feel so broke up I wanna go home
    Let me go home
The poor cook he caught the fits
And threw away all my grits
And then he took and he ate up all of my corn
    Let me go home
Why don't they let me go home
This is the worst trip I've ever been on
So hoist up the John B's sail

This song will always hold a special place in my heart. I just lost someone very special to me, and this song cheered me up. It allowed me to cry not with sorrow, but acceptance, motivation, and thankfulness for all he did for me in the year or so I knew him. He had a heart of gold and always looked at the positives. I miss him so much, but I know he's in a better place.

This song has an amazing bass part. It's not an exaggeration to say that Carol Kaye's bass on SLOOP JOHN B helped revolutionize electric bass playing in rock/pop music...

I'm going to have to disagree. Paul McCartney was moving bass way beyond this at the same period of time. Listen to Rain by the Beatles, Paperback Writer. As good as this is, the Beatles really were breaking ground by the mile compared to everyone else around at the time.

    • @lynnturman8157
      @lynnturman8157 10 лет назад +35

PFB1994 Both those Beatle songs you mentioned came after Pet Sounds. I will agree with you that McCartney was probably the most influential in bringing electric bass to the forefront. And I also agree that he came up with incredibly melodic lines. But what's great about Carol Kaye's bass on this & other songs on Pet Sounds (and I don't know if Kay came up with the bass lines or Brian Wilson) is that she wasn't just playing passing notes on her way to a root or a fifth. The bass parts were very melodic & very orchestral. And I also know that these bass parts are what inspired McCartney to think of bass playing in a different way. So it's probably more accurate to say that Carol Kaye influenced McCartney, McCartney influenced the rest of the world.
