it actually shocks me when i see a beautiful actress (ex. winona ryder, kate winslet, renee zellsweger) saying that they were considered fat or ugly, like it's insane! and then you get to realize that society is never satisified, and it's sad.
Those woman aren’t conventionally attractive. Winona is more average/girl next door, not insanely beautiful. The other two aren’t beautiful but good actors imo

nah i disagree. for example, nobody’s discrediting margo robbie’s or florence pugh’s or ryan gosling’s acting skills because it’s just obvious that they’re talented. people talk about their performances and skills all the time, not just their beauty. because there actually is something substantive to talk about there. but there are a ton of actors that are just kind of alright/meh or even kinda bad or always get cast in mediocre/superficial roles and there’s really not much to talk about apart from their beauty. just because someone is famous as an actor doesn’t necessarily mean they have some amazing talent. that’s not how that industry works, unfortunately. and there are a lot of actors like that in hollywood, whether we like them or not.

Beauty standards nowadays are insane thanks to social media and internet. The hottest stars in the 70s would now be seen as ugly, honestly i dont even know if the heart-throbs like Steve McQueen or Kevin Costner would even be considered conventionally attractive nowadays for audiences. Euphoria is the standard now, and thats an insane level to match. I prefer the days where you could see actually normal people on the big screen, when Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, George C Scott, Richard Harris, Anthony Quinn, were the sort guys you could see become famous and beloved and be a proper movie star. Nowadays you have to be Glen Powell, Ryan Gosling or Jacob fucking Elordi to get anywhere, ofc there’s many more diverse actors nowadays but to be a leading movie star you have to be a super-model. On the flip side, pre-2000s beauty standards for women were absolutely insane and thank god thats changed a lot
I do agree that social media has had a massive impact on beauty standards and like you said over the years the “normal look” of celebrities has become more distant from “everyday people” it’s a very interesting subject and I appreciate your take on it !
That’s the funny thing tho, there are so many people out there that say someone like Ryan gosling isn’t that attractive (pretty sure they’re blind tho) which just shows how even current leading men and women often aren’t seen as ‘attractive enough’
@@frances1227 he has close set eyes and they were never really a standard, beauty standards changed for sure throughout the history, but these were mainly weigth fluctuations and things like higher forehead or small lips, but the eye proportions (enough space between them to fit one more eye) were always there, even in "perfect man" sketch of da vinci, eyes are probably the most important part of your face, something you see first and something you cant change with surgery, you can have cheek, chin, jaw implants or filler but you cannot change the distance between your eyes
The thing that anyone getting into Hollywood or acting has to know from the very, very beginning is that most people have no idea what they are doing. Most people only know what is good when they are told by someone higher up the chain that something is good. The reason we have so many sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes is that the entertainment industry is FULL of people with no taste and no aesthetic values whatsoever. It is a fashion industry where people follow along the safest possible route. So if you get into a meeting and someone says you are ugly, laugh, laugh your ass off, and I bet you, the person saying it, ain't no prize either.
I think that people get over obsessed with lead parts. Like i think I'd legit prefer to be the side part. Longer career typically like JK Simmons or Alison Janney. I can age without worrying that I dont look like I did in Juno anymore.

as someone who grew up feeling ugly, i can say it really is all about learning not to care, no one will accept you if you can't accept yourself first, still working on that myself, feels like an endless battle sometimes, and in some way it is, cause you'll never be good enough for everyone, but you can always be good enough for you, if you're willing to try
I agree. There was a recent drama about a English theatre play. People didn't find teb glad attractive enough and guess what some stupid Americans were saying "this Hollywood movie is definitely going to flop." I mostly saw Americans complaining who didn't even know that this was a play not a movie and it was happening in a different continent
I only recently found out out the Winona wasn't considered pretty. I grew up in the 90's and 2000's and considered her and Angelina Jolie in the same category of unbelievable natural beauty. My queer little self had a folder dedicated to each of them on my PC 😅
I’m taking acting classes right now in LA and I have to admit… It is hard to tell if someone is a good actor if they’re very good looking. I did a scene with a fellow student and I couldn’t tell throughout our monologues and dialogue between each other if she was good or if she’s just ridiculously good looking. And this is coming from someone who is a hetero woman.
The way beauty standards work is still a mystery to me, not just in Hollywood but in other film industries as well. One of my favorite foreign actors was extremely conventionally handsome. He had the kind of face that both an 80-year-old grandma and a 20-year-old woman could find attractive. Even almost two decades after his passing, the younger generation in his country still finds him attractive. Heck, I’m not even from his country and I find him beautiful lmao. Yet, there was a time when he was considered unattractive because he had a gentle, softer look while the industry wanted a 'tough' look. At the same time, he was mocked by his contemporaries who claimed the only good thing about him was his beauty. It seems like the industry disliked him because they found him unattractive, and also disliked him because they found him attractive??? Like what?????

During the 1940s and 1950s when Stalin was in power, the USSR’s beauty standard for men was a tough, proletariat, masculine look, which suited the state’s ideology. Mr. Tikhonov, however, had a softer look. Ivan Pyryev, the director of Mosfilm, the biggest film studio in the USSR, outright called him unattractive and non-photogenic. Since Mr. Tikhonov couldn’t get big roles, he opted for small ones. Hence, his peers mockingly referred to him as a 'blue lover,' meaning actors who only got roles based on their looks and usually played romantic roles. (I don’t remember the exact term, but it was something like that.)
Can we also as a society take accountability for the role we play. The immense bullying i’ve seen towards that poor girl playing juliet is really insane. People have absolutely justified treating ppl bad bc their ugly and actors especially. And in the same breathe, when an actor is pretty somehow they’re too attractive and won’t be taken serious as an actor? Like nobody can make up their mind. Everyone just complains that everyone is too attractive or not attractive enough. Imagine if they denied you from doing your job as an engineer or a doctor or a cashier because ur attractiveness? Actors are working too and have a skill set. Looks aren’t the end all be all.
I feel context is needed Juliet is supposed to be the kind of girl you would risk it all for and let’s be honest is that actress the type of woman the average man would do that for? No. I feel bad for the actress just getting a gig but more people are irked at the fact its an obvious DEI hire more than anything

This is so true. I'm not sure I want to work as an actress anymore, at least in the main industry. The pressure to have always updated and good photos, to be good looking, have white teeth, be photogenic and slim, have nice hands etc... Every one considering every flaw you have, your accent... I never get hired in commercials bc I dont look like the typical italian girl, and as for the cinema you need to have a network of people you know or land a known agent who cares to make you work.

I sometimes dislike lead actors for being beautiful, especially if they are supposed to come from a poor family, be an addict, have poor working conditions etc. All characters looking amazing in a movie puts me off too. Whose world is this? Can I have movies made in real world?
Hollywood's obsession with beauty standards is as old as civilization and nothing new. Remember the Greek myth of Narcissius or the story of the ugly duckling. Anyhow speaking as a man who grew up in the 90s what really scares me when it comes to the beauty standards of the entertainment business goes back to the 90s is the dieting fads, dieting fads that led to anorexia becoming a major health issue young girls back then. I can't begin to tell you how many talk shows back then who were doing segments on the issue. It was heartbreaking just watching young women talk about their body issues because they wanted that supermodel body and sadly this issue is making a comeback.

i dont think that beauty can hide bad acting, but good acting can hide bad looks, and as for "beauty", it changes, what is deemed beautiful, like having big forehead and no eyebrows was once considered beautiful, by the society, not at an individual level. i guess the definition of beauty is heavily influenced by movies, if theres a lead actress with a long nose and its a good movie and her character is good, people will start liking, women with long nose. So the beauty standards could change any time, and all of us are beautiful and ugly at the same time and i dont think anyone should be bothered by it. and as for normal people, beauty is subjective (can be influenced), so you're sure to be attractive for someone else, and personally i dont think beauty matters if theres love in relationship, cause if it did, it wont be love
I definitely feel that what’s presented in film’s whether that’s fashion,beauty or products have influenced society since the beginning of film. take for instance Rachel from friends her haircut starts to become viral, everyone wants that haircut! I love this one! I study, write, and present on topics, such as unconscious bias and social psychology. Your analysis of "pretty privilege" is spot on. Perception bias is a real thing for all of us. In a tenth of a second, we judge people we see with dozens of variables, simultaneously consciously and unconsciously. From attractiveness to goodness, mating potential, ideological assumptions, threat assessment, cleanliness, trustworthiness, and many more, all in the blink of an eye. Please keep creating content! Funny to think: Speaking as an American, New Yorker, and lover of poetry & prose, I almost can't help but to listen to your more English than not accent, and consider you as more erudite, intelligent and classy.
Having real skills, talent, intelligence, knowledge, work ethic, a good personality and stable mental health will always take you further in life if you make those things a priority too. Spending your whole life relying on your pretty privilege will fail you in the end because beauty fades as you age anyway. It’s sad that some people only have that going for them and nothing else because as you said beauty standards change. What’s wrong with simply using make up, skin care, wardrobe, aesthetics…..the gym if need be in order to enhance your beauty. The obsession with botox, filler, surgeries and looking like someone else is causing people to look so unattractive and age a lot faster than they should. It’s not worth it.
its just a theory, but maybe the actors who didn't grow up with the "pretty privilege" are sometimes more successful because when they finally get the opportunity for a bigger role, they are what is "refreshing" in a given time in Hollywood. What I mean by that is that in a sea of similar looking faces and bodies that none of the viewers can relate to or distinguish really because they are mostly the same and act the same in PR stuff because they were literally handpicked and crafted, sometimes with surgery, here comes someone who is different. It pulls the attention of the viewer because he or she doesn't fit the standards that are "in" right now. And it makes the viewer appreciate the performance more simply because "they are more like me" so there is a sense of familiarity, and that generates liking for the actor. It's like reversed pretty privilege, where they are on my side because they look normal. That, and the amazing performance of the actors results in them standing out in the best way possible. But it obviously doesn't work for all viewers, some people, as we can see by looking at celebrities of today, not just actors, are adored because they are beautiful. Not everyone wants to look deeper and appreciate the craft, they just want to look at pretty face, and the people behind the big shows like love island or the Kardashians know it, and use it for money.
I'm glad one the posters here ADMITTED that the 'beauty standards pre-2000 were insane.' The beauty standards in the 90's (Pamela Anderson and the "Baywatch" bodies/measurements; Victoria's Secret Angels; Supermodel faces) were super strict and ridged!! So if people in real-life thought you looked like a sex symbol from the 90's, or represented one of those media images, you were considered a knockout - better than average. But the term 'pretty privilege' didn't exist back then. And the focus was more on bodies and faces - an OVERALL bombshell appearance.
@@AbbieRee It's true. Thank you for acknowledging my post! I understand that young women today are "competing" with AI bots and digitalized art, and that's an impossible standard. But the difference is that you're more likely to be "competing" with the girls down the street from you or in your gym, INSTEAD of the TOP SUPERMODELS (including professional swimsuit models or Playboy Playmate centerfolds), which was a professional beauty standard in the global media. It's kind of strange to think that the "new" beauty standards are regular girls in every day life, imo. So, in a way, it's more personal social comparison, and may be tougher in a completely different way.. you may be constantly comparing yourself to your BFFs. I DON'T think that's good for genuine, trustworthy and lasting friendships.
It was also a lot more racist pre 2000s I'd say the good thing about this era is that ideals of beauty are a lot more diverse and accepting than it was back then
@@Model_Roe It depended more on where you lived, imo. I worked with people of all races and ethnicities, and as a result we ALL got along well together. We didn't care about the color of one's skin or what they looked like. As long as people we respectful and genuinely kind to us, that was all that mattered - especially during tough times. I agree that inclusivity and diversity gives people more opportunities in this era. That means it was extremely complimentary to have met many of the strict, harsh and rigid beauty standards of the 90's.

to be fair.... i mean... beauty is just what we go towards. i want to look at pretty people in movies. YES the standards are ridiculous!!! and of course i can watch movies, and do watch movies and love movies even if someone is "ugly" ..... but in general, beauty is part of the movie's package. it draws you in. even if you are not on screen - pretty people have it easier in life and we want to look at them. so in media, it is even more so. but there are also times when a persons beauty in a movie, ruins the part. sometimes i just can't buy the story, if someone is just gorgeous and they are supposed to be a mess. it's a weird weird thing. beauty standard and who has the "it" factor.....

I definitely agree that beauty presented in films has to go with the art they are trying to create so like you said the actor has to look a certain way to present that type of beauty but I do also agree that it goes both ways as in if a character in a movie is meant to be present as being grotesque then that’s how they should be portrayed! Fantastic video! I really appreciated that you were able to talk about how "pretty privileges" can become disadvantages as well. In reality, the problem isn't necessarily that a conventionally attractive actor has a lot of opportunities, it becomes a matter of whether or not we base our opinion on someone's acting skills or their looks. It's also important to remember that people (especially women) getting rejected by studios because they're deemed "ugly" are a way more common problem than people getting rejected because they look "beautiful." Loved the video! I recently found your channel and it inspired me to finally start making my own videos! So thank you for that! Also, to answer the question, I feel like it can depend on the project. Taking Transformers for example, Megan Fox isn't very good in it, and the way the camera looks at her is very "male-gazey". It feels clear they weren't asking much of her as an actor, and just wanted her to be there to be attractive. But like she's good in Jennifer's Body, so it feels like it really depends on who's making it and what they're asking out of them.

Hollywood's obsession with the beauty standards of the time was what basically killed Judy Garland, forcing her to take pills to reduce weight and as such rekindling the addictions she had worked so hard to control. The thing is that when you look at her in her final film, the woman was in a perfectly normal shape, however the producers wanted a woman on her forties (post childbirth) to have a teen's body and forced her to take the pill in order to maintain the role. Sad, so sad....
I’m going to push back a little here. I think part of the point of movies is to present us with a kind of hyperreal subconscious dream world - it’s not necessarily an idealised world, but it’s close to the world we see in our dreams (auteur filmmakers like David Lynch or Wes Anderson will push this concept to its absolute limit, by giving us worlds that are aesthetically unrealistic but emotionally real). I think audiences want this kind of thing, whether they admit it or not. Every decade or so, there’s a movement that tries to reorientate films towards gritty aesthetic realism (Italian neorealism, kitchen sink dramas in Britain, etc), but audiences usually reject it within a few years. When asked why Cary Grant was such a great leading man, Alfred Hitchcock said, “women want to make love to him, while men look at him and see their brother”. It’s no surprise that Hollywood’s idea of a normal bloke is Ryan Gosling because he’s someone that the whole audience can fantasise about in different ways (not necessarily in sexual way).
Really interesting points! Thank you for sharing your opinion. I do believe like you said the portrayal of beauty in some media is almost a fantasy and unrealistic but is an escape.
One neglected aspect of this is that ugly actors may get hired if they settle for ugly roles. If you are talented enough for the lead but do not look the part you may just get the other roles in a job. The problem is usually the availability of parts, not the emphasis on beauty.
I think it’s more of an issue of type casting. People have certain looks that are attributed to certain types of characters. So although it’s true that being “unattractive” might mean u miss out on certain parts it equally can get you parts. And it’s the same with “pretty” people who won’t necessarily be able to get parts that require a more menacing, rugged or ugly look. I mean look at the new Furiosa film, they had to make Chris Hemsworth “ugly” for him to play a villain. Type casting affects both attractive and unattractive actors alike.
It will come eventually you just have to start caring about what you want to create rather than thinking about how others perceive you. I’m constantly learning! and like you said it is very hard! but good luck and remember to do it because you want to and try not to worry about what others think ☺️
i rarely think about this onto myself. i want to do acting, which already sounds, seems impossible. i never thought about my beauty until this video, not in a negative way but just in general. i dont know if i would be considered "beautiful" or "ugly" to others. maybe i am but again like you said, its all in someone's perspective. i think every actor goes through this, they all either been told theyre conventionally beautiful or not enough for the role, but that shouldn't stop them to keep going. like andrew garfield, meryl streep, ryan gosling... well those who are white actors. i think another struggle is ethnic diversity. there are high standards to POC looks. there are standards to latinos/as, asians, afro latinos/as, black people like if theyre "too dark" or "too light" etc. sorry for the rant but yeah lol. btw i love your videos and im new here :D

Now here is something where I have a bit more skin in the game. First off a lot of "ugly actors" are not even close to being visually unappealing. Are guys like Nicolas Cage or Adam Sandler drop-dead gorgeous? No, but they are at worst and I mean at worst average, and all the actors/actresses that you showed off in your video are even more attractive than them. So instead of actors struggling with not being pretty enough this comes off as they met an ass whole who said mean things rather than actually overcoming their physical appearance. It's like a guy who is 5'10 coming to my 5'4 ass and saying he knows what it's like to be small. Bitch, please. A better example of this is Danny Devito, I love the guy but I will be the first to admit, that he is not a good-looking guy in any way, but because of that when he has spoken about the issues of overcoming his appearance it means so much more to me. At the end of the day though we have no one to blame for this but ourselves. Going into the topic of video games its kind of similar, currently their is a back and forth of how attractive should female characters be in videos games, ones that are not very attractive getting lambasted but others that embrace incredibly beautiful character are also lambasted. I do think its good that we as a society embrace having characters that many would not consider good looking, but at the end of the day we are hardwired to like what we like. If you gave me the choice to watch a movie that started Scarlet Johanson or Rosie O'Donnell and everything else is exactly the same. I am going to pick SJ every single time

Some interesting points made, I definitely think that a lot of actors have had remarks made about their appearances that normally happen once they break into cinema and for people who are more in the comedic genre it may be more excepting for them to not be held to the beauty standard of others in Hollywood whether this is true or not I don’t know but sometimes it comes across this way which is interesting. But like you said when people like this speak about beauty standards it does mean a lot partly due to the fact that I expect they get a lot more remarks made about their appearance than what Hollywood typically deems as “attractive” Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion it’s greatly appreciated! 🥰
Beauty is a double edged sword yes it might help you get more likes and clicks and people pay attention to you but without talent you tend to get discarded perfect example of this would be Pamela Anderson Megan Fox Jessica Alba etc all of them in their day extremely hot women but because they did not have much acting range once they all got old Hollywood kinda threw them away which is sad

Jessica Alba had kids and left to start a kid product business. I think a lot of people forget that Megan Fox used to give really crazy interviews that turned people off her and had a falling out with at least one director (she also gave birth 3 times so busy being a mom).

Well said. Definitely true for lead roles. I found especially in the past, supporting roles were more flexible as they'd tend to cast a "type" or stereotype. ex. fat kid as bully, immigrants as bad guys, and poc as criminal's. hmm hollywood has always been awful? lol

Im an actress and tbh theres a small amount of truth to this as not all actors are trying to be hollywood celebrities. I think thats what most people think when they think of acting, they never consider theatre, and other areas in the performing arts and the status quo in different countries, the London scene is really quite different for example. You could say being attractive is advantageous in the way that it is in any profession, but theres pretty people everywhere in this industry, its really money and networking thats a bigger obstacle for actors.
I definitely agree that it is very different in the theatre setting, I mainly focus on the Hollywood film industry in this video But like you said when it comes to acting networking and a steady income is a bigger obstacle for actors. Just as an American Dream the Hollywood is dead. People all over the world and especially in USA were fed with some pretty images and ideas, which were completely severed from reality. And the thing is - people still believe these dreams.
it actually shocks me when i see a beautiful actress (ex. winona ryder, kate winslet, renee zellsweger) saying that they were considered fat or ugly, like it's insane! and then you get to realize that society is never satisified, and it's sad.

That's probably because many of these actors only get cast for their looks.
nah i disagree. for example, nobody’s discrediting margo robbie’s or florence pugh’s or ryan gosling’s acting skills because it’s just obvious that they’re talented. people talk about their performances and skills all the time, not just their beauty. because there actually is something substantive to talk about there.
but there are a ton of actors that are just kind of alright/meh or even kinda bad or always get cast in mediocre/superficial roles and there’s really not much to talk about apart from their beauty. just because someone is famous as an actor doesn’t necessarily mean they have some amazing talent. that’s not how that industry works, unfortunately. and there are a lot of actors like that in hollywood, whether we like them or not.

Beauty standards nowadays are insane thanks to social media and internet. The hottest stars in the 70s would now be seen as ugly, honestly i dont even know if the heart-throbs like Steve McQueen or Kevin Costner would even be considered conventionally attractive nowadays for audiences. Euphoria is the standard now, and thats an insane level to match. I prefer the days where you could see actually normal people on the big screen, when Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, George C Scott, Richard Harris, Anthony Quinn, were the sort guys you could see become famous and beloved and be a proper movie star. Nowadays you have to be Glen Powell, Ryan Gosling or Jacob fucking Elordi to get anywhere, ofc there’s many more diverse actors nowadays but to be a leading movie star you have to be a super-model. On the flip side, pre-2000s beauty standards for women were absolutely insane and thank god thats changed a lot

@@frances1227 he has close set eyes and they were never really a standard, beauty standards changed for sure throughout the history, but these were mainly weigth fluctuations and things like higher forehead or small lips, but the eye proportions (enough space between them to fit one more eye) were always there, even in "perfect man" sketch of da vinci, eyes are probably the most important part of your face, something you see first and something you cant change with surgery, you can have cheek, chin, jaw implants or filler but you cannot change the distance between your eyes

The thing that anyone getting into Hollywood or acting has to know from the very, very beginning is that most people have no idea what they are doing. Most people only know what is good when they are told by someone higher up the chain that something is good. The reason we have so many sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes is that the entertainment industry is FULL of people with no taste and no aesthetic values whatsoever. It is a fashion industry where people follow along the safest possible route. So if you get into a meeting and someone says you are ugly, laugh, laugh your ass off, and I bet you, the person saying it, ain't no prize either.

as someone who grew up feeling ugly, i can say it really is all about learning not to care, no one will accept you if you can't accept yourself first, still working on that myself, feels like an endless battle sometimes, and in some way it is, cause you'll never be good enough for everyone, but you can always be good enough for you, if you're willing to try
That's why Australia & UK tv/ film is great - they cast real looking people, while America casts beautiful people.

I agree. There was a recent drama about a English theatre play. People didn't find teb glad attractive enough and guess what some stupid Americans were saying "this Hollywood movie is definitely going to flop."

I’m taking acting classes right now in LA and I have to admit… It is hard to tell if someone is a good actor if they’re very good looking. I did a scene with a fellow student and I couldn’t tell throughout our monologues and dialogue between each other if she was good or if she’s just ridiculously good looking. And this is coming from someone who is a hetero woman.
The way beauty standards work is still a mystery to me, not just in Hollywood but in other film industries as well. One of my favorite foreign actors was extremely conventionally handsome. He had the kind of face that both an 80-year-old grandma and a 20-year-old woman could find attractive. Even almost two decades after his passing, the younger generation in his country still finds him attractive. Heck, I’m not even from his country and I find him beautiful lmao. Yet, there was a time when he was considered unattractive because he had a gentle, softer look while the industry wanted a 'tough' look. At the same time, he was mocked by his contemporaries who claimed the only good thing about him was his beauty. It seems like the industry disliked him because they found him unattractive, and also disliked him because they found him attractive??? Like what?????

During the 1940s and 1950s when Stalin was in power, the USSR’s beauty standard for men was a tough, proletariat, masculine look, which suited the state’s ideology. Mr. Tikhonov, however, had a softer look. Ivan Pyryev, the director of Mosfilm, the biggest film studio in the USSR, outright called him unattractive and non-photogenic. Since Mr. Tikhonov couldn’t get big roles, he opted for small ones. Hence, his peers mockingly referred to him as a 'blue lover,' meaning actors who only got roles based on their looks and usually played romantic roles. (I don’t remember the exact term, but it was something like that.)
Can we also as a society take accountability for the role we play. The immense bullying i’ve seen towards that poor girl playing juliet is really insane. People have absolutely justified treating ppl bad bc their ugly and actors especially. And in the same breathe, when an actor is pretty somehow they’re too attractive and won’t be taken serious as an actor? Like nobody can make up their mind. Everyone just complains that everyone is too attractive or not attractive enough. Imagine if they denied you from doing your job as an engineer or a doctor or a cashier because ur attractiveness? Actors are working too and have a skill set. Looks aren’t the end all be all.
I feel context is needed Juliet is supposed to be the kind of girl you would risk it all for and let’s be honest is that actress the type of woman the average man would do that for? No. I feel bad for the actress just getting a gig but more people are irked at the fact its an obvious DEI hire more than anything

This is so true. I'm not sure I want to work as an actress anymore, at least in the main industry. The pressure to have always updated and good photos, to be good looking, have white teeth, be photogenic and slim, have nice hands etc... Every one considering every flaw you have, your accent... I never get hired in commercials bc I dont look like the typical italian girl, and as for the cinema you need to have a network of people you know or land a known agent who cares to make you work.

I sometimes dislike lead actors for being beautiful, especially if they are supposed to come from a poor family, be an addict, have poor working conditions etc. All characters looking amazing in a movie puts me off too. Whose world is this? Can I have movies made in real world?
Hollywood's obsession with beauty standards is as old as civilization and nothing new. Remember the Greek myth of Narcissius or the story of the ugly duckling.
Anyhow speaking as a man who grew up in the 90s what really scares me when it comes to the beauty standards of the entertainment business goes back to the 90s is the dieting fads, dieting fads that led to anorexia becoming a major health issue young girls back then. I can't begin to tell you how many talk shows back then who were doing segments on the issue. It was heartbreaking just watching young women talk about their body issues because they wanted that supermodel body and sadly this issue is making a comeback.

i dont think that beauty can hide bad acting, but good acting can hide bad looks,
and as for "beauty", it changes, what is deemed beautiful, like having big forehead and no eyebrows was once considered beautiful, by the society, not at an individual level. i guess the definition of beauty is heavily influenced by movies, if theres a lead actress with a long nose and its a good movie and her character is good, people will start liking, women with long nose. So the beauty standards could change any time, and all of us are beautiful and ugly at the same time and i dont think anyone should be bothered by it.
and as for normal people, beauty is subjective (can be influenced), so you're sure to be attractive for someone else, and personally i dont think beauty matters if theres love in relationship, cause if it did, it wont be love

I love this one! I study, write, and present on topics, such as unconscious bias and social psychology. Your analysis of "pretty privilege" is spot on. Perception bias is a real thing for all of us. In a tenth of a second, we judge people we see with dozens of variables, simultaneously consciously and unconsciously. From attractiveness to goodness, mating potential, ideological assumptions, threat assessment, cleanliness, trustworthiness, and many more, all in the blink of an eye.

Having real skills, talent, intelligence, knowledge, work ethic, a good personality and stable mental health will always take you further in life if you make those things a priority too. Spending your whole life relying on your pretty privilege will fail you in the end because beauty fades as you age anyway. It’s sad that some people only have that going for them and nothing else because as you said beauty standards change. What’s wrong with simply using make up, skin care, wardrobe, aesthetics…..the gym if need be in order to enhance your beauty. The obsession with botox, filler, surgeries and looking like someone else is causing people to look so unattractive and age a lot faster than they should. It’s not worth it.
its just a theory, but maybe the actors who didn't grow up with the "pretty privilege" are sometimes more successful because when they finally get the opportunity for a bigger role, they are what is "refreshing" in a given time in Hollywood. What I mean by that is that in a sea of similar looking faces and bodies that none of the viewers can relate to or distinguish really because they are mostly the same and act the same in PR stuff because they were literally handpicked and crafted, sometimes with surgery, here comes someone who is different. It pulls the attention of the viewer because he or she doesn't fit the standards that are "in" right now. And it makes the viewer appreciate the performance more simply because "they are more like me" so there is a sense of familiarity, and that generates liking for the actor. It's like reversed pretty privilege, where they are on my side because they look normal. That, and the amazing performance of the actors results in them standing out in the best way possible. But it obviously doesn't work for all viewers, some people, as we can see by looking at celebrities of today, not just actors, are adored because they are beautiful. Not everyone wants to look deeper and appreciate the craft, they just want to look at pretty face, and the people behind the big shows like love island or the Kardashians know it, and use it for money.
I'm glad one the posters here ADMITTED that the 'beauty standards pre-2000 were insane.' The beauty standards in the 90's (Pamela Anderson and the "Baywatch" bodies/measurements; Victoria's Secret Angels; Supermodel faces) were super strict and ridged!! So if people in real-life thought you looked like a sex symbol from the 90's, or represented one of those media images, you were considered a knockout - better than average. But the term 'pretty privilege' didn't exist back then. And the focus was more on bodies and faces - an OVERALL bombshell appearance.

But the difference is that you're more likely to be "competing" with the girls down the street from you or in your gym, INSTEAD of the TOP SUPERMODELS (including professional swimsuit models or Playboy Playmate centerfolds), which was a professional beauty standard in the global media. It's kind of strange to think that the "new" beauty standards are regular girls in every day life, imo. So, in a way, it's more personal social comparison, and may be tougher in a completely different way.. you may be constantly comparing yourself to your BFFs. I DON'T think that's good for genuine, trustworthy and lasting friendships.
It was also a lot more racist pre 2000s I'd say the good thing about this era is that ideals of beauty are a lot more diverse and accepting than it was back then
@@Model_Roe It depended more on where you lived, imo. I worked with people of all races and ethnicities, and as a result we ALL got along well together. We didn't care about the color of one's skin or what they looked like. As long as people we respectful and genuinely kind to us, that was all that mattered - especially during tough times.
I agree that inclusivity and diversity gives people more opportunities in this era. That means it was extremely complimentary to have met many of the strict, harsh and rigid beauty standards of the 90's.

Fantastic video! I really appreciated that you were able to talk about how "pretty privileges" can become disadvantages as well. In reality, the problem isn't necessarily that a conventionally attractive actor has a lot of opportunities, it becomes a matter of whether or not we base our opinion on someone's acting skills or their looks. It's also important to remember that people (especially women) getting rejected by studios because they're deemed "ugly" are a way more common problem than people getting rejected because they look "beautiful."

Loved the video! I recently found your channel and it inspired me to finally start making my own videos! So thank you for that! Also, to answer the question, I feel like it can depend on the project. Taking Transformers for example, Megan Fox isn't very good in it, and the way the camera looks at her is very "male-gazey". It feels clear they weren't asking much of her as an actor, and just wanted her to be there to be attractive. But like she's good in Jennifer's Body, so it feels like it really depends on who's making it and what they're asking out of them.

Hollywood's obsession with the beauty standards of the time was what basically killed Judy Garland, forcing her to take pills to reduce weight and as such rekindling the addictions she had worked so hard to control. The thing is that when you look at her in her final film, the woman was in a perfectly normal shape, however the producers wanted a woman on her forties (post childbirth) to have a teen's body and forced her to take the pill in order to maintain the role. Sad, so sad....
Whoever told Winona she isnt pretty enough was a straight up hater. We all know shes gorgeous.

I’m going to push back a little here. I think part of the point of movies is to present us with a kind of hyperreal subconscious dream world - it’s not necessarily an idealised world, but it’s close to the world we see in our dreams (auteur filmmakers like David Lynch or Wes Anderson will push this concept to its absolute limit, by giving us worlds that are aesthetically unrealistic but emotionally real). I think audiences want this kind of thing, whether they admit it or not. Every decade or so, there’s a movement that tries to reorientate films towards gritty aesthetic realism (Italian neorealism, kitchen sink dramas in Britain, etc), but audiences usually reject it within a few years.
When asked why Cary Grant was such a great leading man, Alfred Hitchcock said, “women want to make love to him, while men look at him and see their brother”. It’s no surprise that Hollywood’s idea of a normal bloke is Ryan Gosling because he’s someone that the whole audience can fantasise about in different ways (not necessarily in sexual way).

One neglected aspect of this is that ugly actors may get hired if they settle for ugly roles. If you are talented enough for the lead but do not look the part you may just get the other roles in a job.
The problem is usually the availability of parts, not the emphasis on beauty.

I think it’s more of an issue of type casting. People have certain looks that are attributed to certain types of characters. So although it’s true that being “unattractive” might mean u miss out on certain parts it equally can get you parts. And it’s the same with “pretty” people who won’t necessarily be able to get parts that require a more menacing, rugged or ugly look. I mean look at the new Furiosa film, they had to make Chris Hemsworth “ugly” for him to play a villain. Type casting affects both attractive and unattractive actors alike.

I too get very self conscious appearing on camera when I make videos and even put off making any if I don't feel I look good. Sad really.
It will come eventually you just have to start caring about what you want to create rather than thinking about how others perceive you.

i rarely think about this onto myself. i want to do acting, which already sounds, seems impossible. i never thought about my beauty until this video, not in a negative way but just in general. i dont know if i would be considered "beautiful" or "ugly" to others. maybe i am but again like you said, its all in someone's perspective. i think every actor goes through this, they all either been told theyre conventionally beautiful or not enough for the role, but that shouldn't stop them to keep going. like andrew garfield, meryl streep, ryan gosling... well those who are white actors. i think another struggle is ethnic diversity. there are high standards to POC looks. there are standards to latinos/as, asians, afro latinos/as, black people like if theyre "too dark" or "too light" etc. sorry for the rant but yeah lol. btw i love your videos and im new here :D

100% when it comes to ethnic diversity it’s becomes even more deep. When researching for this video I saw a lot of actors who struggled with getting jobs because of their ethnicity but I thought it’s a much bigger topic for discussion and I myself am not sure I’m qualified enough to touch on. but it’s definitely something that needs to be talked about ❤️

Now here is something where I have a bit more skin in the game. First off a lot of "ugly actors" are not even close to being visually unappealing. Are guys like Nicolas Cage or Adam Sandler drop-dead gorgeous? No, but they are at worst and I mean at worst average, and all the actors/actresses that you showed off in your video are even more attractive than them. So instead of actors struggling with not being pretty enough this comes off as they met an ass whole who said mean things rather than actually overcoming their physical appearance. It's like a guy who is 5'10 coming to my 5'4 ass and saying he knows what it's like to be small. Bitch, please.
A better example of this is Danny Devito, I love the guy but I will be the first to admit, that he is not a good-looking guy in any way, but because of that when he has spoken about the issues of overcoming his appearance it means so much more to me.
At the end of the day though we have no one to blame for this but ourselves. Going into the topic of video games its kind of similar, currently their is a back and forth of how attractive should female characters be in videos games, ones that are not very attractive getting lambasted but others that embrace incredibly beautiful character are also lambasted. I do think its good that we as a society embrace having characters that many would not consider good looking, but at the end of the day we are hardwired to like what we like. If you gave me the choice to watch a movie that started Scarlet Johanson or Rosie O'Donnell and everything else is exactly the same. I am going to pick SJ every single time

Some interesting points made, I definitely think that a lot of actors have had remarks made about their appearances that normally happen once they break into cinema and for people who are more in the comedic genre it may be more excepting for them to not be held to the beauty standard of others in Hollywood whether this is true or not I don’t know but sometimes it comes across this way which is interesting. But like you said when people like this speak about beauty standards it does mean a lot partly due to the fact that I expect they get a lot more remarks made about their appearance than what Hollywood typically deems as “attractive”

Beauty is a double edged sword yes it might help you get more likes and clicks and people pay attention to you but without talent you tend to get discarded perfect example of this would be Pamela Anderson Megan Fox Jessica Alba etc all of them in their day extremely hot women but because they did not have much acting range once they all got old Hollywood kinda threw them away which is sad
I definitely agree that beauty can be a double edged sword you’ve given some great examples of this, but I do think that sometimes your acting ability can be overlooked by your beauty.

Jessica Alba had kids and left to start a kid product business. I think a lot of people forget that Megan Fox used to give really crazy interviews that turned people off her and had a falling out with at least one director (she also gave birth 3 times so busy being a mom).
@@kyliefire5008 Megan and Jessica both got old so had to turn to other ventures to make money Megan even said this herself once she got to a certain age men did not see her as sexy the same way they did when she was 21 so she had to reinvent herself or get into a PR relationship with a gen z celebrity eg MGK same thing with Jessica and i feel bad for both of them because Hollywood never really gave either of them a chance it is like they were typecasted as the "hot chick" in every movie and that was that once they aged out of that role they had to reinvent themselves into something else very few women escape this eg Halle Berry Charlize Theron come to mind but even they got old and its like Hollywood does not know how to use them anymore if they are not eye candy to the opposite sex sad

And here is the ugly truth that no one likes to accept... there is nothing wrong with wanting to see pretty things... it is natural, we are biologically wired to look for symmetry, beauty, because usually beauty is a sign of health, soft and healthy skin, an athletic and healthy physique.....a green landscape with a lot of nature, it is understood that it is a healthy and prosperous place....etc. It's okay people if you want to see pretty people...😊

Well said. Definitely true for lead roles. I found especially in the past, supporting roles were more flexible as they'd tend to cast a "type" or stereotype. ex. fat kid as bully, immigrants as bad guys, and poc as criminal's. hmm hollywood has always been awful? lol

Im an actress and tbh theres a small amount of truth to this as not all actors are trying to be hollywood celebrities. I think thats what most people think when they think of acting, they never consider theatre, and other areas in the performing arts and the status quo in different countries, the London scene is really quite different for example. You could say being attractive is advantageous in the way that it is in any profession, but theres pretty people everywhere in this industry, its really money and networking thats a bigger obstacle for actors.
I definitely agree that it is very different in the theatre setting, I mainly focus on the Hollywood film industry in this video
But like you said when it comes to acting networking and a steady income is a bigger obstacle for actors.
