Rocky Balboa is by far my favorite strong male character. He never loses the physically imposing masculine "archetype" for male leads of that period, while also being mature enough to admit his mistakes and grow as a person because of them. He's never written in such a way that he needs to rescue his wife, but instead relies on her for his inner strength and motivation. He is secure enough in his own sense of masculinity to regard her as his true partner in every sense of the word... acknowledging more than once that he couldn't have achieved what he has without her.

    It’s a cycle
At the beginning of Hollywood the character were normal everyday people
Then during golden age they became larger than life
Then Hollywood collapsed and 70s they focused on gritty life of normal people
Then 80s was return of big strong characters
    And that cycle continued…
Also the male character often reflect the period we are living so in times of unrest like 70s you are more likely to see character study movies rather than big budget movies

Honestly I want to see more male characters like Tommy Shelby or Wick who always seem to know what to do and don’t flinch in the face of hardship. But I wouldn’t really worry about lack of male characters like this, when the big mouse and other companies see that people have no interest in characters with the depth of a wet cardboard, and they are bleeding money from these kinds of projects, they hopefully will wise up and change their tune

    • @AbbieRee
      @AbbieRee  5 месяцев назад +2

Definitely! Tommy Shelby is one of my favourite characters of recent the depth he had to his character you couldn’t help but feel and understand him no matter how outrageous his actions could be the fact that he is also played by such an incredible actor really shows how a good written character can become so powerful when being played by someone who is so talented I think homelander is another example of this! I agree hopefully we can get some more characters like this in the future, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts ☺️

    • @RossPacino
      @RossPacino 5 месяцев назад +2

@@AbbieRee exactly. I don’t necessarily even want strong male characters, just ones that make sense and are not one note and always butt of the joke. Pardon the rant, but how do you take Thor Odinson a literal God and bring him down so much and bungle his character so bad and so comically(no pun intended) that another Thor in a game franchise becomes ten times better than a mcu Thor who has been in the movies for more than a decade, despite the fact that GoW Thor was in the games like a couple of hours at most. Honestly, at this point I just want writers who want to mix ideology in their writing, learn from masters of this shit and layer that ideology deeper and more subtly.

I think this is why I love Tarantinos characters because he doesn't write them as being stereotypically male or female. He's able to write a hyper masculine man such as Cliff Booth in once upon a time in Hollywood. In the same movie you have a man whos more in touch with his feelings like Rick Dalton who's a far more anxious character than his best friend. On the opposite side you have Jennifer Jason Leigh who is the only woman in the hateful eight but in the context of the film she's a psychopath in a room full of psychopaths.

Aragon and Sam from the Lord of the Rings are two of my favorites. They're both amazing examples of strong, well written characters, with Aragon being a tough hardened ranger who can let down his guard and show vulnerability, and Sam being almost the opposite, someone who may not necessarily be seen as the most "masculine" character but shows strength and pure determination when his moment comes.

I would suggest a large part of the issues with modern cinema and television (heck modern entertainment in general) is that the writers are portraying the characters as immature masculine and feminine, they act and behave like adults who have aged but not grown, and even then they are not what would be the ideal versions of the boy and girl archetypes, what would be called in the Jungian psychology as the incomplete versions.

I think my favorite male character is the one my girlfriend is developing for her animated show. I am helping her write it and he truly does strike the perfect balance between the male and female gaze thing. He is strong and capable and flawed and gets upset and apologizes and works on himself. If we get to release multiple episodes like we have discussed I truly hope men like me can have a great character to look up to that has realistic flaws and can change but still be everything we enjoy about men at the same time.

Although he’s in the thumbnail and in a few clips through the video, a great example of the “strong male character” who hasn’t been brought up in these comments is, in my opinion, Indiana Jones. Although most of Harrison Ford’s performances have been able to capture that balance of the “traditional hero” attributes we expect with a trademark sense of vulnerability and relatability at times, I feel like Dr. Jones has been his most successful performance in this regard.

@@AbbieReeCheers! I'm a big fan of Stoic philosophy but not the vernacular form (as in someone unemotional like Judge Dredd although Dredd is a guilty pleasure of mine), but more like someone who just thinks very positively and productively (like Mr. Miyagi, and similar to a Zen Buddhist).
They might not cry very often yet not because they repress their negative thoughts and emotions, but because they think very positively. They're very mature characters, so to speak, and mentors in their own right. I really like these types of characters a lot but I'm missing them a lot in recent media.
      Some quotes I really like:
      >> Never put passion before principle. Even if you win, you lose. -- Mr. Miyagi
      >> It's okay to lose to opponent. Must not lose to fear. -- Mr. Miyagi
      >> It's possible to make no mistakes and still lose. That's is not a weakness. That's life. -- Picard
      >> If we're going to be damned, let's be damned for who we really are. -- Picard
      >> Whatever comes out of these gates, we have a better chance of survival if we work together. -- Maximus
      >> What we do in life echoes for eternity. -- Maximus (but quoting Marcus Aurelius from Stoicism)
I dig this a lot. 😅 There are so few characters like this I find today, male or female.

elijah mikaelson's character arc in The Originals was one of the best ive ever seen, how his essence changed throughout the seasons. thomas shelby and joe from blade runner, these characters have such depth that many of us can connect to them, i mean certain aspects of their character like thomas shelby's thinking ,that he has "extra" time after they all survived in the war, this thinking makes him fearless but not immune to other emotions , i think thats beautiful.
idk if you've read the six of crows, the character of kaz brekker is somewhat similar to thomas, wont spoil it for you, but the will of this man, ambition, these things inspires me to do more.

Welcome back! This was a nice surprise to see in my YT recommends. I think the most important strong male character, apart from physical virtue, is a great degree of stoic self-control. Bond exemplifies that balance well, especially Daniel Craig's performances, so I'll pick him as a favorite. Within this spectrum would also be someone like Mr. Rogers, who - while not a fictional character - had a screen presentation of healthy masculinity that isn't an action hero.
A strong man, to me, isn't a violent one, but one who is capable of using violence in defense when called to. It's also a father who knows that a child can learn more from scratching a knee than from someone telling them to stop running before they hurt themselves. He is close enough to protect against real danger, but equips those around him to learn to protect themselves. These are my favorite archetypes of male characters.
    Cheers for now!

Interesting and well thought out video, Abbie, the reason why I like your channel and subscribed.
Answering today's topic, well, there are many interesting characters that I like, but right now I would say Joel Miller from The Last of Us (the game, not the TV show!) Joel in the game is such an interesting character because he has the perfect balance between being a strong survivor, a hardened killer and a sensible human being at the same time. He is tough when he has to be but very gentle with the people he trusts and love. His interactions with Sarah, Tess and Ellie are the most obvious cases, but also his relationship with his little brother Tommy was one I felt quite genuine and moving as a kid brother myself.... Also, the way he interacts with Bill after finding Bill's dead partner was very low key but surprisingly gentle from Joel's point of view.
Joel is a character that has suffered the same deconstructive treatment of most male characters in recent times, but only eleven years ago, when The Last of Us came out, he was a great character that had the perfect balance between strong masculinity and gentleness, the main reason why he is such a popular character for both male and female fans.
And Joel is not the only good character that came out during the first decade of the 2000. We have other characters like Daniel Craig's version of Bond, or Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones, or Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, or Maximus in The Gladiator, all of these characters that, in my opinion, had a good balance between strength and sensibility, because prior to that, many of these characters could lack sensibility and compassion, and today, almost all of them lack strength and conviction, but back at the beginning of the 2000s, novelists, movie makers and video game designers had achieved the perfect balance. We should look back to those characters and learn from them....

    Great video as always Abbie!
I’m actually having a hard time picking a favourite strong male character. I feel a lot of movies I’ve watched recently have been about men going through a struggle or trying to discover themselves in their world, whether in a Tarkovsky film by devoting themselves to religion in search of truth in the darkness or in a Bergman film devoting themselves to women for love and comfort against the worries of death and time, then seeing their folly, only falling apart with them knowing all the while they cannot worship their way out of being who they truly are by following another deity or giving themselves over entirely to another.
In that sense Chiron in Moonlight always felt that way, of not knowing and going through the pain and coming out the other side the exact representation of what he thought a strong man was from his childhood and became the very essence and embodiment of that in every way from physically to emotionally; only for the ending (SPOILERS) to say the truth of how he felt all along to the man he loves about when they were young and mean it, not hiding but standing by his words and actions.
I feel it is the small things we miss, especially nowadays in films where they are so big that such trifles and woes like that where one goes through are overshadowed by the need to save the world and conquer or kill another, compared to the need to do right by others in all the small ways of life.
Leading to the need for the embodiment of a strong man and to see it clearly and become a carbon copy of it or to follow the wrong path of a relationship to define who we are through the tropes and stereotypes, only to see that we become the opposite and sacrifice everything to be what we think is what a strong man is instead of seeing who we are inside, then to speak it without regret and love.
So, Geralt of Rivia is my favourite male character.
Thanks for taking the time to upload, looking forward to the next video!

I like my men a little on the darker side. Rust Cohle, Jim 'Gard' Gardener, Heathcliff, Winston Smith, Thomas Shelby, perhaps even Professor Snape. To name a few.
The more traditional masculine characters have never appealed to me. Why? Probably because I'm too narcissistic for my own good and need to relate to them somehow.
They tend to be simple, stoic, and very sure of themselves, traits which I have never possessed. Nor have I ever known men like this.
A modern example is Jack Reacher. I've watched some of the show and read a few of the novels.
I understand the appeal to an extent, as in it's pure entertainment. Pop corn fiction. But these characters are too far removed from reality for my personal tastes.
The percentage of men in Western society who are like Jack Reacher must be astronomically low.
Love the casual vibes of your content by the way.

While I find him to be morally reprehensible, I think the written character of Lester Nygaard in Season 1 of Fargo to be really interesting to watch - he's a character that really covets the idea of traditional masculinity, but even as he gradually believes himself to have achieved it (albeit through psychopathic means), whenever actually confronted he quickly loses the facade.

@@AbbieRee I think Season one of Fargo in particular is an example of an extremely effective use of ensemble. The show handles cynical humor and delicate stakes really well, and presents this terrific tone of a snowballing butterfly effect to the extreme. I think the culture will shift before the decade is over because Hollywood can't keep hiring leftist activist instead of talented creators if they want to make money. Disney lost a lot of money with Dial of Destiny and even MCU movies/shows are losing money. I don't need my male characters to be perfect or tough in every situation, but I don't like the trend of making them all look like punchlines. It was hard to watch Indiana Jones in Dial being told what piece of s@it he was for over 2 hours and Ford at 80 was just too damn old anyway. My favorite male characters would be Chief Brody from Jaws 1 and 2, Indy from the original trilogy, Doc Brown from Back to the Future, Dirty Harry and John McClane from Die Hard.

Maybe I am to optomistic but I don't think we are lacking in strong male characters more so that Strong Female character lead movies feel the need to not have any strong male characters along with them which is something strong male lead character movies in recent years don't seem to suffer from.
Mad Max Furry, Black Panther, Logan, and many many others have decent strong male leads with strong supporting female character.
Yet with female lead movies its harder to say, while there are still plenty of great movies staring strong female leads with strong male supporting characters such as Alita, Wonder Woman, Blue Eye Samurai, and Arcane. There are also a lot of movies that seem to need to demonize or embarrass male characters in one way or another such as She Hulk, Captian Marvel, Black Widow and many others.
Thats where I think the "Decline" is coming from, not from a lack of strong male characters but active hostility to that type of characters and Hostility gathers more attention in discussion. On my channel the better performing videos are the ones where I complain about something instead of complimenting, I assume this is because conflict is more interesting.
As to your final question though I would say my favorite Male character is Stannis Baratheon, a cold hard unflinching man who will stay to his values no matter what even if its objectively the wrong thing to do. Though if I need to pick someone more recent then I will go with honestly Puss in boots in the Last wish. Loved the character when I was younger and that movie just lit a fire under me.

I need to challenge your position on this, there were tons of silly male characters in rom coms where women are the lead in the 80s and 90s. Also the public has had a massive outcry for relatable characters both male and female, then you also have to keep in mind that leading actors dont push ticket sales anymore Franchises do. Fast Five has a ton of side female leads but the whole show is bad but it still makes money and many actions films from the past were scene this way. Also , Cavil is a massive hypocrite he talks about the witcher moving from the books while at the same time acting in Man of Steel a movie where Superman fans made clear the cynical take on Superman has nothing to do with the books. There's also a few female RUclipsrs who examine these kinds of cultural trends in media, including NerdWorld, Vex Electronica and Baggage Claim, the latter of whom recently posted a great little video on the current state of masculinity in our culture today that you might find interesting: ruclips.net/video/000EIZ7k-qk/видео.html
Myself, I like a mix of masculine characters, and ideally, they should be somewhere in the middle between the extremes - a man who is confident, masculine and decisive, but also thoughtful and not afraid of softer feelings. The character of Aragorn from Lord of the Rings is a perfect example of 'non-toxic masculinity' - the alpha male as father, husband, brother, son, provider and protector. Here's a great video on why he's ideal for the role: ruclips.net/video/GruFzUsKddI/видео.html

Favorite male character could be literally almost any movie with Alain Delon or Charles Bronson. Both were actors that relied almost entirely on physical presence and acted like guy like Clint Eastwood talked too much. Ryan Gosling in Drive is just Nicolas Winding Refn doing a hipster version of those guys, specifically Delon in Le Samourai, and selling Gosling before revealing him as a monster.
The thing with male characters is not that they were more realistic back when. Nothing is realistic about Sylvester Stallone or Harrison Ford. The difference was that it was understood those movies were not going to bring in female film watchers. They were written as male power fantasies. The new Daniel Craig Bond films are an example of this failure. He's technically more realistic in that he fails in every movie and women even turn him down. No man is going to see James Bond for that. Making him look like a British Essex club bouncer is also equally miscalculated. Hollywood is running on the idea that women have more disposable income but that doesnt mean that you abandon half the human population in search of an audience.
