This was the Omni I been waiting for. I have such fond memories of this event as a kid. Dan Jurgens could do no wrong in the 90s in my eyes. His art in the main title was so good. I still fondly remember when Ollie breaks his bow in grief over the death of Hal at the end and the price it cost him to set the world right. Lots of skippable tie ins but main story was 🔥🔥. Good review. Peace.
This was a great event series back in the day, DC trying to consolidate where all their characters were in the universe while trying to push forward their new characters...gonna have to pick this up. Great review, bro!
Finally OG Gem back with a recent reads review! Haha nah I know you’ve been busy with other stuff for the channel but I do miss these reviews. It can be a little convoluted but this is one of my favorite omni’s so far this year. Awesome job on the review.
I really liked how you highlighted your favourite issues in the omnibus, I'd love to see that more in future review videos. Maybe put some notes about what you liked next to the highlights, in case you forget when making a review.
Was great to hear your opinion on this, I absolutely loved this book and agree that some of the tie ins are passable but there’s also some unmissables too... great stuff
Great review as ever. I love how you really are able to distance yourself from being a comics fan and be critical. Uncanny Omar has a good site but he absolutely loves everything that it undermines the really good runs/stories. You are honest and placing tabs throughout the omnibus is a great idea when you're doing a review. I've seen you do that before.
I remember reading the miniseries and the Batman tie ins as a kid and thought it was a pointless mess...but I did like the art by Jurgens and Ordway and I still think it looks clean and classic now. Nice review.
Another interesting and very good review from you. Thanks for doing this. Dan Jurgens has written several good stories. This is definitely one of them.
I like the 90s artwork of this event but there's not much more I can say about it beyond nostalgia. I've read most of DC's Crisis series and imo the original one from 1985 has never been matched, both the art & story are of such an epic scope and satisfying conclusion. I wish we had some kind of animated adaptation instead of whatever the CW tried to do with it. I've heard Final Crisis (the one I didn't read) is very divisive: some people loved it and some hate it...maybe I'll read it someday since I prefer to read old runs. Good review !!
Looks like Death Row records, LMAO XD. last year I bought the single issues and funny I read them incorrect. the art work is amazing. love some 90s DC comics
Been on the fence on this for awhile. I remember having this on my pull list back then, but didn't get all the tie ins. I just got the tie ins that were on my pull list. I might have to get this now based on your review.
This event helped pave the way for the Starman series. Can't wait for you to read that series. It's a gem. It'll grab you the same way Gotham Central did, it's like a sleeper hit.
Waverider and Hawk becoming Monarch was from an event a year or two before between all the DC annuals called Apocalypse 2001. Some were pretty cool. Waverider showed up from the future trying to stop his reality from coming true. He'd show up in each annual to find the identity of Monarch by making contact with a hero, reading their future, which turned into Elseworld type stories. It was so so as far as events go.
I have waffled back and forth so many times about picking this up. Every time I see the interior, I'm blown away by the art, but everyone basically says if you weren't up to speed on Green Lantern in the 90s, then the story is basically incomprehensible. It keeps me torn. As far as next reads, definitely want you to read Sleeper next, you're going to love it.
This book in my opinion is an essential read... as far as being up to speed on Green Lantern all you really need before this is Emerald Twilight to fully appreciate it.
Still one of my all time favorite stories. I got my 90s paperback still and got it signrd by Jurgens. I'm on the fence with the Omni though. I always hear the most tie ins are Not necessary and some are even a chore
I'd recommend the Zero Hour story as required reading for anyone that wants to read Geoff Johns's JSA run as that series ties in sometimes very heavily with events in Zero Hour.
I think when they first started to digital colour and print on glossy paper the results were better. Liquid! over JoeMad or Kubert bros on the X-Men looked so nice, even if the stories were meh haha. DC took longer to catch up to it if I recall.
Off-topic, but I just ordered Uncanny X-force Omnibus by Rick Remender. My biggest whale. After years of waiting for the reprint and then waiting months to see it on stock here in Europe. So happy!
Since the umbrella academy has came out maybe you could do a review on the three graphic novels I don't think there are any omnibuses though. Great vid btw gem💎
Zero Hour is a bad story and the one good part of Zero Hour is the debut of Jack Knight to lead into that incredible Starman series. Zero Hour is not well thought of at all.
No, the artwork can elevate a series with bad writing and still be a bad series. The writing makes or breaks a series where no matter how good certain comics look, the writing will drag it down and it will be remembered as a bad story. Heroes in Crisis is a perfect example of that.
DanV900 okay I see your point, but I think that’s a very subjective example. I am just saying that in my experience, when I’m trying to look for a new book to pick up, the artwork is what jumps out to me the most
Ryan Mazzola I would agree that the artwork jumps out like my younger brother reading Ladykiller next due to the art. I would say that good stories with bad art are more difficult to get into since it’s distracting like the Uncanny X-Force Dark Angel Saga epilogue issue. That art was really bad and had such a big change in that series even if the story itself was good. The art is what catches your eye and draws in, but the writing makes or breaks it. I love James Stokoe as an artist and bought his Edge of Venomverse issue even though I knew the story would be terrible. Greg Smallwood is another great artist where I’ll just pick up an issue drawn by him no matter what story it is since even if those stories are bad, at least the art is good.
Buying this book was such a mistake. The artwork was good but other than the Batman and Superman tie ins and the main story ,it was mostly boring, unreadable and not connected outside of like 1 page.
Read this earlier in the year and i had a love hate relationship with the book. The MAIN story was dope, but there are some tie ins that were just. BORING lmao.
Gem : Talking about Zero year..
Me : looks at book saying Zero Hour..🤔

Read this series a thousand times as a kid. My gateway to a lot of DC history. Loved that timeline in the back of issue 0.

Didn't even know this Omni existed. It does get lost among all the other big stories

The coloring on Zero Hour still blows me away.
I'm for defs getting zero hour on the back of your review my friend. Fantastic review and video as always GEMINT.
Nice to see that you are back to reading omnis. Problem is that now I have to buy this because after your positive review, this will go oop fast 😁
Awesome, Cable is in the prologue :))
i remember when i buy the comic of hal jordan killing every green lantern and the transformation to paralax. Great comic
Another interesting and very good review from you. Thanks for doing this. Dan Jurgens has written several good stories. This is definitely one of them.
Cool i didn't know this story, thanx Gem!!!
That omnibus is epic man. Been waiting on this =)
Parallax costume looks great, good review.
Great stuff man, would love to see you review some Vampirella!
I really like this one. For sure think I am going to pick this up. Thanks for the review Gem.
Great review. I'm loving that cover.
You’re killing me smalls!!!! Every time I watch your vids I’m simultaneously ordering an omni 😂🤣great vid man!!🤘🏻🇨🇦🤘🏻

Nice vid - enough that it makes me want to check out the book. I wish they'd do an Armageddon 2001 Omnibus too!
Nice thumbnail it's like Back to the Future when Marty McFly was disappearing from his photo with his family in it. Zero Future.
Zero hour is actually a short story written by Ray Bradbury. Really good too.
Regardless of the skippable tie ins, this looks like a must own cause that are work is sick

Get onto that Azzarello N52 Wonder Woman omnibus, man.
Solid artwork for most of it. Always love seeing Daryll Banks work on Kyle Rayner. Flash #0 was probably Waid’s best work on the title.

I love the video. Might look into picking this one up. Do you think you can do a Walking Dead review? Any format would be nice. Thank you!
Sounds like fun. Might pick this up. 😊
Didn’t like the miniseries itself but loved the Kyle Rayner stuff. Morbius Omni next!
Nice looking extras at the end of the omnibus. Can't say the story of Zero Hour looks quite as compelling as Crisis on Infinite Earths though.
90k here we come 👊

I have this omnibus need to do a read 😊👍
Cool review Gem, would you consider reviewing the Doom Patrol Bronze Age omnibus?
yea i was just saying i need to get into DP

reading the second library edition now

always put this omni in my cart on IST but never pull the trigger
I dig the pages on where all Batman timeline/version is in ..the book is to long to read but can skip it..
Hell blazer or did you drop that can’t remember?
✌️🧔
Didn’t read yet
maybe do a review of one of the Monsters omnis?...stay safe
Fun fact: the big bad was supposed to be Captain Atom, but because that info leaked they switched it to Hawk.
That was for Armageddon 2001, not Zero Hour. Yes Hawk becomes extant eventually, but Captain Atom was supposed to be the big Bad of Armageddon 2001.
@@roninprofessor Ow yeah! My bad.
Please review the new teen titans omnibuses next.
Finally he finished reading it
Man I really feel like the artwork is what makes or breaks a series

Can you make a review on a wonder woman omnibus, since the movie was suposed to came out this year
Zero Year boom!
Zero hour didn’t have the best tie ins compared to infinite crisis or final crisis but the main Story itself is really good
Please read Wonder Woman by George Perez it is so good
Exant looks like Onslaught
Will you ever be reading more of Vinland saga and vagabond

This event was weak. You'd think DC learned their lesson. Nope. They did something similar with Convergence. Still worth collecting though.
There was no reason to reveal that the main villain was Hawk. This is inexcusable.
90's art really is great. Though I've found a lot of the stories can be a slog to get through.

classic story
Can i just read the main event and be done? Do i need all tie ins?
you can just read the main...but i recommend the batman tie ins
Hell yeah
I didn't like this one. Some of the tie ins were agonizing. The whole book seemed like a rush job. And I'm a big DC fan.
Zero Hour is disappointing compared to events such as Infinite crisis, blackest night and crisis on infinite earths.
This one was ok

The crises no one remembers. Doesn't this recon Catwoman not being a prostitute? Idk, even her origin is a mess that's never explained clearly.
This event wasn't that great. I had expected a little more from DC
