I was looking for a overview of this yesterday prior to yours being uploaded. The first one I clicked on showed this kid (to me) just hastily flipping through the book and talking absolute nonsense. I thank the youtube gods you exist and do what you do for all of us!
Ordered! Can't wait to check this out as It will be my first dive into The Question. I've wanted to read it for awhile now as Dennis O'Neil is a legend at grounded and gritty storytelling. RIP. Also, thanks for all of the great content Omar! You really have created a great community where we can learn more about these underappreciated stories!
This is one of my favorite comic book runs of all time. This creative team was never matched (with Jeff lemire being the closest). I'm really curious how they're going to map the next volume. Ie with maybe the Question Quarterly series being added
Great overview as always, Omar! I personally like the fact that they include a warning for offensive content, instead of censoring or removing it. Like in the case with Kitty Pryde's use of offensive words in UXM, which fit within that context, but they hid them behind black bars.
I agree 100%. What Marvel did is insulting to the target buyers of the omnis, which are mostly adults. It sends the message that they don’t trust readers to understand historical context even if the offensive words are used for the purpose of education rather than exploitation.
Agree. Or God Loves Man Kills Gallery, where they redacted the word. But had an explanation. I'd prefer when companies (DH+DC+Marvel) have the "product of its time" memo
It’s sad do know that Dennis O'Neil will never have the opportunity to sign any copies of this wonderful book, you can tell DC put actual effort into this omnibus.
It's so cool to see the letter pages collected! I hope this starts a new trend, although it would be kind of expensive because I would probably upgrade some of my books if they did that.
Thrilled this finally released! Since I started learning and reading about comic books, this run was always one of those that I wanted to have a physical copy of and it's finally here and in Omnibus form no less!
I've never read these stories yet I'm happy to add this book 2 my collection!!!! Danny was a great writer overall so I'm not worried about hating this run. There's no way that's happening.
I received mine copy last week, but haven't opened it yet. I do remember readingbthe first 5 or 6 issues, but that's all, so when I do get around to it, it will be a fresh read. Not keen about the letter pages being grouped at the end, and it would had been nice to see the question who's who entry. If this sells well, maybe we will get a ditko ohc or omni of his question. This gives me hope that we will see the Ted cord bb in omnibus format
@Ryan Wilson well there are 10 issues of the original series to be collected(including that blackest night issue), 1 more annual but also another green arrow annual as it was a two part story,5 question quarterly issues(which are double the size of normal ones) and O’Neil also had a ‘The question returns’ special. So there is still a fair bit. They might throw in a few more ive not aware of.
@Ryan Wilson I haven't read black hammer, but I loved sweet tooth, his justice league dark was really good, and definitely check out his green arrow run.
I have pre ordered this. The trade paperbacks have long been out of print. Great that Denny O'Neal's letter columns have been collected which help to give philosophical context for the issues. Denny O'Neal and Denys Cowan's storytelling examines institutional corruption and what an individual can do to overcome it. The story could be great material for a tv series adaptation.
I’m going to get this omnibus ( my first one). I’ve been wanting to get this run from the question for 3 years now coz of it being so expensive. I’m so happy.
It says right on the back just like the Green Arrow by Mike Grell omnibus that this is the first of 2 volumes. So I believe DC is intending on putting out a second Question omnibus :)
So I know from the Ditko days the character was pretty Randian (which is why Moore wrote Rorschach the way he did), but I also know from stuff like Green Lantern/Green Arrow that O'Neil would have had very different views than Ditko. Was O'Neil's Question different in terms of ideology from Ditko's? Because I think I'd be really interested in this book if he was, but not if he wasn't.
Never read this series. It's weird, I was buying almost everything DC at the time but for some reason I always passed it up back then. Can't wait to pick it up, I love being able to read a new, old comic these days, it's so rare now.
Definitely getting this, but won't be getting rid of my trades until Vol 2 is confirmed. Vol 2 would have to contain The Question 28-37 (37 was a Blackest Night tie-in), Question annual 2, Green Arrow annuals 2 & 3, and The Question Quarterly 1-5.
Agreed, but it still seems so pointless to include a disclosure. "People need to know its a product of its time!" That's immediately apparent when you see the art style/year it was originally published. It goes without saying. But whatever, I'm just glad this exists
Got my copy this week and I absolutely adore the pink text; reminds of the Drive title card, sweet, sweet noire goodness. Can't wait to dive into it and looking forward to the next volume.
DC is really doing well this year, so far we got the Gotham Central Omnibus reprint, The Death of Superman Omnibus reprint, Swamp Thing Absolue Vol. 3, The Long Halloween series of books, Catwoman of East End and now the Question Omnibus. Fingers crossed for the Phantom Stranger Omnibus in the fall. Keep it up DC!
Hey Omar, I noticed you holding down a lot of the pages. DC used the same printer for the Catwoman omni and even though I carefully stretched the spine on that one it still wants to close over a fair way into the book. It’s not too bad in the middle but hopefully will open up more as I get thru reading it.
I can't believe it's real, this has been delayed so many times! Timing couldn't be worse though, hopefully I'll get it later this summer. And I agree with you about the disclaimer, censor sucks so I'm glad they kept it intact. Blade of the Immortal had a disclaimer as well because of the swastika
This series was so SO good!! With Suicide squad it was one of my favourite series. I always thought reading this and vigilante with the mature readers only title I thought I was getting away with something lol Question: Do you think this title would be a vertigo title if it was around today? What I can't stand with these comics is the old-flat-coloring. For example I really liked the Adsolute Swamp Thing recolloring and I'd wish for more collected editions of older comics to receive the same treatment.
Quite possibly one of the most beautiful books DC has put out design-wise. I love Marvel’s uniformity in their omnis, but DC is on another level!
@@danielklos1 Totally agree, when DC gets it right their designs really pop and look great, but when they miss, boy oh boy do they ever miss.
I hope people don't sleep on this one. It's one of the best comics ever!

Yeah, I just wait for Omar. I learned my lesson. heh.
Glad it was not censored!! Marvel should learn from DC in this aspect.
Has Marvel edited omnibus collected works?
@@REEE_Larson yes.

I know they did that with Miracleman, even if they manage to let one particularly intense seen go through unscathed.

Lmao. My preorder copy arrived within 30min of me writing this!
loved the Lemire black label series
Great overview Omar! Good to see DC taking a risk releasing some of their content in Omnibus form and not censoring it.
Great overview as always, Omar!
I personally like the fact that they include a warning for offensive content, instead of censoring or removing it.
Like in the case with Kitty Pryde's use of offensive words in UXM, which fit within that context, but they hid them behind black bars.

Beautiful Cover. Excited to jump in. Thanks again for these overviews, gets me pumped on getting these books.

Sooo stoked D.C. put this Omni out! I received my copy yesterday and an stoked to re-read these great stories again in this format!

I wasn't planning on picking this up but I can feel my willpower crumbling after your review, Omar
That art on page 1 of issue 1 is great, and has me interested right away. I’m definitely gonna enjoy this
I’m so happy to see this ha finally been released. I hope this sells really well so we get a second volume. 🤞🤞

I used to have all 36 issues of this series they were my prized possessions lol
I haven’t read this run since I was a kid so I’m excited to dig in. I always got Grell’s Green Arrow vibes from this run of The Question.
Makes sense, they happened at the same time and even had a crossover, so the editorial clearly saw compatibility between the two runs.
I received mine copy last week, but haven't opened it yet.

They could throw in the Jeff lemmire stuff too
@Ryan Wilson I really like Jeff lemmire so idk I hope they do, you can just skip that section of the omnibus if you don't like something. 🤷
@Ryan Wilson I haven't read black hammer, but I loved sweet tooth, his justice league dark was really good, and definitely check out his green arrow run.
Already got The Question omni on order. This will be a great atmospheric companion to "Catwoman of East End" and "Moon Knight" vol. 1 and 2.

This run is easily on par with Alan Moore's swamp thing
Denys Cowan is one of my favorite artists, his work is phenomenal! I haven't bought this yet but plan to get it soon.
Hopefully Marvel won't censor the upcoming Miracleman Omnibus. They should do what DC did with this Omnibus and just have an inner label/disclaimer
So I know from the Ditko days the character was pretty Randian (which is why Moore wrote Rorschach the way he did), but I also know from stuff like Green Lantern/Green Arrow that O'Neil would have had very different views than Ditko. I feel like with how much he did for the character, a couple Batman by Dennis O'Neil omnis would be warranted.
Next: Phantom Stranger omni!
I didn’t read the Question at the time except the annual crossover and #26 featuring the riddler which was one of my favourite stories of the era.
Definitely going to pick this up. Ive been interested in this character ever since I sae film in justice league unlimited animated series
