    It's funny how your tastes change. I remember this artist did a a two-part story I think it was called trains in legends of the dark Knight or maybe engines..... As a kid I hated that artwork but the same artist contributes to this run of Doom patrol which I have yet to read but picked up this omnibus for.... And casually flipping through I find that face value it looks like I'm going to really enjoy just seems to fit the vibe and storytelling

    My copy of the Morrison Omni also has the Vertigo label. I'm OCD enough that it bothers me that it's my only Omni with that logo, but oh well... It's not like all of my other DC Omnis have the most consistent logos anyway, so this will still look pretty cool on the shelf.

      I'm so ocd that I sold my Morrison Animal Man omni with the Vertigo label so that I could buy the new printing with the Black Label just so it would match my Morrison Doom Patrol omni. I think it was about a wash money wise but I do feel ridiculous... they look nice on the bookshelf though.

    Coagula is widely considered to be the first transgender superhero in comics due to the popularity of the run, but this is unfortunately inaccurate. Shvaughn Erin of the Legion Of Superheroes was revealed to be transgender a year prior (1992), and Masquerade of the Blood Syndicate a few months before the introduction of Coagula in September 1993. However, it is important to mention that DC Comics was the publisher of all of them, keeping with its tradition of being the first at breaking new ground. There were other characters before at Marvel, DC and other publishers, but none of them were superheroes.
    Just for final reference; Blood Syndicate was a collaboration between Milestone Comics (the company of Dwayne McDuffie ) and DC.

    • @jcoral1
      @jcoral1 2 года назад +2

      Coagula was the first trans superhero created by a trans woman though, which is why she stands out in particular as being of extra importance.

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri 2 года назад

      @@jcoral1 sure. However, that does not changes the fact that other writers before her saw the need for transgender or LGBT representation and introduced such characters. Pollack only gets more recognition for who she is.

    • @jcoral1
      @jcoral1 2 года назад

      @@jpsarri You know, since you're being technical, Erin isn't a superhero but a supporting character in Legion with the Science Police, and Masquerade isn't revealed to be trans until Blood Syndicate issue 10, months after Kate Godwin debuted, so there's nothing wrong with people saying she's the first trans superhero in mainstream comics. Masquerade is undoubtedly the first trans character of color in comics, and I've met Ivan and he's great and deserves many accolades in his own right. His Ghost Rider run needs collecting too. But yeah, Rachel doesn't just get those accolades because of who she is either.

    • @jpsarri
      @jpsarri 2 года назад

      @@jcoral1 this has been a recent debate, but in my opinion, it is just nitpicking for the sake of giving Rachel full credit. Don’t get me wrong, Pollack deserves to be noted for he achievements as a transgender writer inside and outside of comics but facts are facts.
      Now, I want to express that the lack of superpowers does not necessarily disqualify a character for being a superhero. If that was the case, then Batman and much of his sidekicks do not deserve to be labeled as such. However, the environment, the premises and the events surrounding these characters determine their status in the medium. Erin is as much a superhero as Batman or any other member of the Legion with or without “extraordinary superpowers”.
      It is true that Masquerade “did not came out of the closet” so to speak until issue 10, but his/her transgender powers were present from the start. Just because Ivan and Dwayne chose not to reveal it right away does not diminishes their intention. The hints were clear to those who were truly paying attention.
      Finally, I dare to say that Danny the Street deserves more credit than the characters aforementioned. Unfortunately, some disqualified him/her because he/she is technically a street and not human. However, Morrison knew what he was doing when he introduced the character. One of the reasons Rachel wanted to write for the book, even when she was not necessarily a fan or a writer of comics before.

    • @jcoral1
      @jcoral1 2 года назад

      @@jpsarri I understand what you're saying and you're entitled to your opinion. I'll agree that no one should necessarily get sole credit though, as ultimately the editors, publishers, and others involved helped in making this happen, and DC deserves overall credit for cultivating an environment where these things could happen in books like Doom Patrol, The Sandman, The Dreaming, The Milestone Line in not just Blood Syndicate but Deathwish, and so forth. I also agree with your point about Masquerade in so far as I think that's a perfectly acceptable conclusion to make, but I think it's also fair for people to say Kate Godwin was first for the reasons I provided. Danny certainly deserves credit and was a deeply personal character to Grant for sure. I do think the case you're making for Erin is stretched a bit thin, but I understand where you're coming from. I'm a huge Legion fan, and the series provided a number of groundbreaking moments in representation over the decades.
      I also happen to be good friends with Rachel who is a big fan of comics. She actually wanted to work at Marvel out of college, but had gotten rejected at the time. We'd talked at length about comics like Little Lulu as well as the works of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Gene Colan in just the last time I saw her. She had been a fan of Jack's 4th World in particular which is part of why she went to write that and to be the first out trans person to write for DC proper and not one of the imprints. And of course, she was a big fan of what Grant was doing. She felt her creating Kate Godwin was an extension of the groundwork that Grant had already laid, honored Grant's wishes by not using Crazy Jane or Danny the Street in any major ways in her run, kept Niles a disembodied head (which had been a wish of Grant's, though it's possible Grant was just joking) and even brought back old favorites of hers as a kid reading comics like the Fox and the Crow. In fact, when DC had asked her about writing comics, she told them the one book she really loved coming out at the time was Doom Patrol, and it just so happened that Grant was playing their exit at the time she had been introduced to Tom Peyer through Stuart Moore.
      All of that said, I really do think it's great that these sorts of things like representation and giving people proper credit are important to you, and I apologize if I came off like I was diminishing that in any way. It's great that you're passionate about it and I hope you talking about these things resonates with other people and you're able to get others to see the importance and the impact of all of these different works in the medium.
