From the title and thumbnail alone it seemed like a very interesting topic. I actually have never played BP and barely have any knowledge of it, but you hit the nail on the head discussing something I haven't heard elsewhere. Hey, honestly I prefer the game to be easy. That's the reward you get for maxing the potential of your build, embrace it. There will always be players that fail to do even that, and ends up needing to be carried by party members, that's the charm of a MMORPG.
I'm saying that there's enough hardcore games out there, from FF14 to Elden Ring, to the upcoming Thrones & Liberty.

    • @UsagiKuruzu
      @UsagiKuruzu 3 дня назад +1

@@tedkhoong Blowing thru everything in an MMO means there's less of a dopamine hit when you accomplish anything honestly. Why grind and or min-max your build when you can beat all the content without doing so? Why grind better weapons when you can beat the new content without them? Why party up when you can just solo everything? It's these things that are the reasons why MMOs that have a combat focus should have challenging content. If you want easy, play PSO2 NGS

  • @lunaticyoshi1

NGL, there were several red flags when it launched in Japan last summer:
    1. No simultaneous global release. If Mihoyo and Kuro games can do it, why couldn't an industry veteran?
    2. Boring combat. A streamer I watched basically called it a "left click simulator".
    3. Amazon
    4. Lack of ultra wide screen support. If Genshin and Wuthering Waves can do it, why can't Blue Protocol?
    5. Predatory pricing for cosmetics, etc.
Honestly, the management team needs to be fired and the game needs a hard reboot (similar to what FFXIV did). Also, all censorship demands made by Amazon need to be ignored.

There's a big difference between hosting a server for instanced solo games with limited co-op and hosting one for a game that's always syncing for all online players.
It's a lot less expensive for the former, which is why there's a lot more of those kinds of games than there are MMOs.

    • @lunaticyoshi1
      @lunaticyoshi1 4 дня назад +6

This is 2024, not 1990. They're not reinventing the wheel.
Not supporting ultra widescreen support was a purposeful decision admitted to by the devs. Not having a simultaneous global launch was initially done to localize (censor) the game for different regions. Having a battle system that is inferior to Tera (a 2011 action MMO) is simply bad design.

About the focus on hardcore players: I think this is a double-edged sword. While casual players are the majority of a game, those are also the ones that don't really care much about stats/doing well and have a much higher rate of just leaving and play something else, once they cleared the story. The hardcore players, who grind alot, care alot about the game and play frequently on the other hand, are also the majority of the people, who potentially spend money on things like battle passes, outfits ect. So I think trying to keep those players engaged and not get bored, makes sense since these are the most engaged players. The downside to that it will be harder to convert new casual players to core players since, like you said, endgame gameplay mechanics arent well explained and ruining other peoples runs or feeling useless is gonna discourage a casual player from playing that content. Combine that with little and low effort content updates and you loose player interest.
If you see those 5% and take those suggested 1000-2000 active players, that means only 50-100 players are actively playing difficult endgame content together. It's probably going to be hard as a new player to even find groups, who accept newbies and casuals and teach them.

Im surprised to see this, I thought since BP is mostly jp exclusive since the aggressive banning of overseas acounts, they would enjoy this exclusivity and keep on playing as a united playerbase.
I have been playing PSo2 and is feeling the content drought on our side of things, but the only thing keeping me there is the combat and character customization.
I hoped bp would be better since bamco had a solid mmo template with the SAO ggo game and its successors but i guess that system is SAO only now.

  • @tyrant3191
    @tyrant3191 3 дня назад +3

ima be honest, this is just another case of "the game should've been released gloabally".
JP MMOs are pretty notorious for failing in JP, there's just not enough people to support an MMO in the country, especially when mobile games and consoles rule the market over there.
the one successful MMO they had, besides FF14, was PSO2 and the second it released globally it basically failed because they didn't get a global publisher. The only reason FF14 is doing well globally is because after the failure and closure of the OG FF14, A Realm Reborn released globally, all at once. That and the strong brand recognition that is Final Fantasy. If 14 was only released in JP and didn't launch global for 3-5 years, I promise you it wouldn't be as popular as it is today. It probably wouldn't be around today. And developing for the Global audience absolutely changes their gameplan and mindset of how to release content and manage expectations. Though FF has pretty much been recycling the same events over and over for the past 10 years, they sprinkle enough new ones in to keep player interest, and with housing systems, RP and various other player focused features, people have pretty given their lives to FF14 so it's close to impossible for it to ever fail now.
What makes a good JP MMO doesn't make a good Global MMO, PSO2 learned this the hard way and they'll never recover from it. And now, JP players have been exposed to a lot more Western/Global MMOs that what makes a good JP MMO isn't working in JP anymore. The signs were there when Monster Hunter Online shut down. When Dragon's Dogma Online shut down. As their own statistics show. JP is not a MMO market. They love consoles and mobiles. Why would you release a PC game, optimized for PC to a console audience??

yeah no i disagree thats not at all why pso2 NGS failed and pso2 base never really spiraled the main problem came with the release of NGS which happened two years after base's global release (base's replacement basically)
and NGS problem had nothing to do with global the problem was that the game was nowhere near ready as shown by basic features available in the last game (REALLY BASIC features) where missing just so they could reach a internal release date the player base didn't even know until around 2 months before its release
the retem update which already was much better then the original launch release that only featured the tutorial in terms of story and content released later that same year showcasing even more that the release date should have been then if not even later
pso2 base itself was doing fine before NGS's release and could have easily extended its active lifespan if needed for better results and overall player retention
yeah, no i disagree that’s not at all why pso2 NGS “failed”, and pso2 base never really spiraled. The main problem came with the release of NGS which happened two years after base's global release.
Besides SEGA is large enough to be able to handle the publishing themselves, even more so with help from azure to do the hosting of the global servers.
And NGS’s problem had nothing to do with global. The reason was because the game was nowhere near ready to release, as shown by basic features available in base (REALLY BASIC features) were missing. Just so they could reach an internal release date the playerbase didn't even know until about 1-2 months before its release.
The retem update which was already in a much better state than the original launch version, came out December 2021 meanwhile NGS itself came out June 2021 that same year showcasing even more that the release date should have been then, if not even later to allow more content and systems to be made for the game.
For context the original release only featured the tutorial in terms of story and content in the game.
pso2 base itself was doing fine before NGS's release and could have easily extended its active lifespan if needed, for better results and overall player retention.
Getting into “conspiracy mode” a likely answer to these issues is funnily enough a healthy mix of covid related issues, and sonic frontiers cross development. (which clearly uses the same engine and very likely borrowed people from pso2)
Of course, the games current state is VERY different now and current opinions on it will very strongly depending on who you ask.
But it’s still not in a state where you can play it hardcore and nolife it since there simply isn't enough enjoyable long term content for that making the game better enjoyed more casually and socially instead.
Which is primarily the ones who still play besides some more hardcore veterans who refuse to give up (I don’t blame them even if unrewarding)
(i had fun writing this so whether you care to read all this or not i don't really mind have a nice day (genuinely))

first off, looks like your comment repeats itself so I ended up reading the same thing twice. secondly, I don't mind reading arguments from differing perspective, conversations are good.
      on to the topic:
everything you're mentioning is pretty much the result of the JPs design philosophy when it comes to games and especially live service games. even their successful ones follow a similar pattern and achieve success purely based on how addictive or enjoyable the game itself is. take monster hunter for example. when a new title firsts releases, there is no end game, for months you go through a monotonous grind of the same 6 or 7 monsters, not getting any better gear or weapons, just grinding for the sake of grinding. then, almost a year or 2 later, a massive dlc drops that adds 100-200 hours of endgame grinding. and it works, because even by itself, monster hunter is just that good of a game but also because it's not an MMO, there's no pressure or fomo to force you to play everyday for 2 years. beat the game, wait for dlc while playing something else.
for pso2, that same strategy doesn't work for a number of reasons:
      1. by the time it released, it was a 10 year old game. everyone who was interested in playing pso2, already did so via jp servers and unofficial translation patches. which is why the game launched in 2021 to a meager audience of 20,000 concurrent players on steam. most of the global players who were still playing pso2, stuck with the server they were already on because they didn't want to start over. not to mention they decided to drip feed 10 years of content that already existed. to the point where bugs that existed and were patched out 7 years ago, now existed in global. features that fixed problems from old patches weren't there in global, forcing players to deal with problems the jp server hasn't seen in 5 years. THIS is why, shortly before NGS, the playercount dropped to 5k daily concurrent.
      2. yes the NGS launch was handled terribly with no end game, but again, this is why jp devs always do. they want you to play the game normally and wait months for another update that finally adds an end game grind. just look at the personal series, they do the same thing since p3. release the game then a year later release the same game with a bunch of changes to get people to play again. FES, Golden and Royal all did this. it was their version of NGS. despite that, the interest in NGS wasn't that high. it launched to 60,000 concurrent players and has dwindled to 1,000 today.
      3. when it comes down to it. pso2 is outdated, it's a game from 2012 that uses a lobby instance system that has mostly gone out of style. but jp loves lobbies. street fighter 6, Tekken 8, Granblu fantasy versus, guilty gear strive all have lobbies that people only use because they're kinda forced to. a majority of ff14 is just one big lobby, all the real content is in dungeons and raids, the over world content is just story and events.
so I reiterate again. jp doesn't know what makes a good MMO, good. or rather, the jp audience don't want to play mmos. ff14 is more of a social hangout than anything and you can tackle it's massive story the same way you'd play a single player RPG. try googling Japanese mmos, they're all dead or dying besides FF.
one site even ranked them. 1 was FF, 2 was blue protocol, which we already know is dying. 3 was FF 11 which I don't think is around anymore. 4 was dragon quest which never launched globally, 5 was pso2 NGS, which is also dying. 6 is Uncharted Waters which I've never even heard of and doubt it's playerbase numbers above 10k. 7 is Craftopia which I question if it's even an MMO. 8 is Dragons Dogma Online, easily the best MMO ever that got shafted like 2 years after launching for the exact same reason as I'm saying, not releasing globally day one. 9 is onigiri, who is playing that, let's be real, since being added to steam it's had an all time peak of 368 players in 5 years.. from 2019. and finally wizardry online at 10, which is dead.
JP isn't a MMO society, their only good MMOs are the ones they release globally. PSO2 died because it released globally too late and NGS wasn't good enough to get interest back.

my big issue with bp (played jp for 8 months or so), was as you mentioned lack of meaningful things to do, but beyond that social aspects of game were lacking.
Monetization was way to aggressive, gasha's were just very expensive, entirely rng which outfits you got, pity system was basically only for whales, and the pity currency expires! (I lost like 9k BPP lol when was saving for new years stuff and planned to maybe pull)
To cap that off, there's no trading, no economy, which makes skins and customization even worse, combining outfit pieces to make fits you want to wear is a huge part of games like PSO2, and social mmo's. Having virtually no way to do that besides 'collect everything and horde' is just a horrible model.
imo should have been a auction house using premium currency for outfits and pieces, mounts etc so could recoop loses or even sell goods that are rare from several banners ago, or just even a specific pair of shoes from few banners ago etc. Its completely ridiculous and anti-player way the game was designed.
That was one of the big sticking points for me, its sad cuz i loved the enviroment, and was engaged with story but they really fell down live service slop rabbit hole :(

Sounds like the game is missing content for midcore players, a sort of middle ground between the hardcore and casual players. With such a big gap between the content meant for hardcore raiders and the rest of the playerbase there should be some sort of content that requires a bit more than mashing all your abilities mindlessly but not so much skill as having a full understanding of buff timers and class rotations, kind of like how FF14 does normal raids and trials that require paying attention to boss mechanics and doing enough damage but that are lenient enough that someone without too much knowledge can still queue it and have fun. Content like that gives players that aren't super sweaty something that is still engaging/requires more thought than most of the game without requiring them to be at the most hardcore level to enjoy it while also giving players that might be interested in more hardcore content an easier to digest gateway.
I also think it'd give the people that find the casual content way too easy and the people that wish the game wasn't catered to the hardcore playerbase so much something they could both enjoy since it's not so hard that a casual can't beat it and not so easy that someone who wants something intense isn't bored to death.
Or maybe I'm completely off base, I just wanted to give my two cents on what I took away from the video and give you a comment for the algorithm, I really enjoyed this video/perspective and wanted to boost it a little ^^ wishing you the best

The problem with Blue Protocol is that while the gacha is only cosmetics, the price of the gacha is a bit expensive for a mechanism that won't give you the outfit you want. It should have been a cosmetics shop instead, that and the lack of Endgame is what was hurting the game.

It's kinda sad because not forcing gacha or paywalling strengh is very player friendly and the game really deserves more success for not going that route. "Pointless" activities and grinding is the crux of older MMOs, like it is not just there for the battles, it is also supposed to be a social experience, where you find friends and log in to hang out with people or doing mindless fishing while chatting with your people on voice call.
But I guess seeing how the action rpg market shifts more and more towards single player, gacha, doing dailies in 5 minutes types of game, I guess players might simply feel like not having enough time for a grindy game, that requires some proper time investment and interacting and forming social communities with other players. I mean just look how much hate multiplayer content gets every time someone even dares to suggest it for games like genshin.
I personally don't play Blue Protocol because I don't speak japanese and I don't like Amazon Games as a publisher for the western version with their censorship, so there is currently simply no version of it I can properly play, but I want to see more games like this being made with more social features, high production value and no paywalling characters or strengh.

I think them deciding to delay this game until everyone is dead so nobody can enjoy it outside of japan was WILD! This game was peak hype in 2023, now that the JP servers have basically spoiled/leaked basically everything and have data sheets to show how to play the game. I don't see how this game survives in the west unless they make it another Pay 2 win mess. . . Not to mention the state of the game in Japan isn't the best from what I heard in the community, can someone explain WHY would I as a consumer see a failing product and decide to give it a chance? It's failing for a reason and I am sure it's only gonna be same in the west, since I doubt we are gonna get the game in the current state. This game went from the only game I've ever to play, to Blue what? Damn I can't even remember this game exists. Tbh this is coming from someone who hasn't played the game yet and is waiting for the EU release.
But my biggest gripe with the game just looking at gameplay it just looks (nothing about the systems & the content) is how combat while having a very nice core, looks like it's just spam left click maybe right click sometimes and just spamming skills off cooldown without much thought behind it.
It just looks like there's either no timing required on skills or any sorty of rotation or combos.
If you have played it and i'm just flat out wrong about it, fair enough. This is just what it looks like to me.

I still really want to play it! And I'm sure even in it's current state, the localization would pay off enough (if combined with good advertising) that they'd at least have more resources and feedback to improve what they need to.
At this point, I'm really just scared we NEVER get it, because they keep not releasing it out of fear, running themselves into a corner where it's eventually too late and some higher up pulls the plug. I've waited for this game for at least 6 years now!
Genshin also had little content at the ebginning, and it still runs. It's way too easy for like 70% of the player base too. There are tons of games that are lackluster and repetitive, and they still become decently successful enough. I mean, it's also not like we're talking about delaying the games release outright - we're talking about delaying the localization!

I know exactly how you feel. As a top-tier player in many games that turned to shit being ignored (not just me but an entire community) feels like a slap to the face.
I spent time testing a shitty game to help it turn into a gem i know it can be for a menager to have a Joe Biden moment lasting for MONTHS and ruin it all.

I really hope this game succeeds and pops off. I played Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, Wuthering Waves and Blue Protocol is the next game I'm looking forward to, alongside Azur Promilia and Zenless Zone Zero. I just like good open world games with beautiful stylized graphics. Bought both Tears of the Kingdom and Palworld as well and enjoyed it, along with my host of gacha games I've been on a hunt for these types of games and enjoying it since.
