The Cartier Tank Must is part of my collection and gives me much pleasure. This piece is extremely versatile, whether you are attending a formal dinner or an afternoon with the family the Tank is always appropriate. In my view it is well worth the price.
I've had a must de Cartier for 40 years. Because of its age mine has a mechanical movement. The iconic tank is a wonderful timepiece and pairs with just about anything, anywhere, any time. Mine is especially important to me since it was a gift from my mother, a woman with not a lot of money but impeccable taste.
In the cascade of sport watches, Cartier and models like the Tank offer a refreshing elegant and classic option that is more versatile than many would expect especially if you change the strap.
It's THE definitive dress watch for it's price point. Don't be afraid to buy the quartz or solar models if you're tempted. If this is your dress piece, then it might stay in your watch box most of the time while you wear your other pieces
I'm definitely a fan of the look of a Cartier Tank, but I would much prefer a Jaeger Le Coultre Reverso. THOUGH, if I were to get a Tank, the Must would be the one. Great video and awesome breakdown!
Great video and highly informative. As a watch enthusiast for over 50 years, I agree, the Cartier Tank is an iconic timepiece and it is one of the rare models that can be worn almost everywhere, whether it be formal, informal, sport or simply daily all around wear. Fantastic choice! My favorite watch is a Piaget Protocole, which is very similar to the Cartier Tank, thin, simple, plain, gold, Roman numerals with a black leather strap. I've worn the same watch for 35 years. However, the secret to the watch's longevity is the manner an owner takes care of his/her watch. As a mechanical person, I keep my watch in a small leather pouch in my bag, when it is not on my wrist. That way I can work on cars, get rough, etc. without worrying if the watch can be damaged. Just a suggestion for any fine watch owner who wants to take care of his timepiece so it will last a lifetime.
The new Tank Must has become my daily wear. It goes with everything and with the quick change strap options, you can mix and match the look for any outfit. A timeless classic indeed.
I own three, the first was a Must in silver bought with the Christmas bonus of my first real job. Still impeccable today, with its slightly domed glass so characteristic of vintage Must❤
I own 4 Cartier watches, and while I don’t agree with your conclusion that buying a new Tank Louis is a bad decision, your video is surprisingly in depth and better with the detail of the Cartier history than almost any other RUclips video. All talk about the influence of the tank from ww1 or the Santos story but you went deeper, well done!
I saw an “Art Deco” inspired watch with a square face a few months ago at Walmart’s jewelry counter. I fell in love with that design. (I didn't buy it, as that particular watch looked very cheap.) I thought square-faced watches were a rare thing. Thank you for giving me something to save up for! Jess P.S. I'm a 21-year-old girl and I love your videos! I've learned a lot about belts, wallets, watches, etc. from you guys. Thank you so much!
It is an icon that transcends the watch world; it crosses over as a general dressing style icon. It is emblematic, ingrained in the mind of many people; it is immortal. As for buying it new…well, the second-hand market only exists because people originally bought them new; someone has to make the investment. Since the case is polished, even slight scratches on a gold version show very easily. Buying retail is, therefore, definitely worth it in my view.
Bought mine Tank Louis in rose gold new, and I think it’s absolutely worth it. I think it just depends on how you value things. I like watches more than clothing, so I spend more on watches and less on clothing.
Bought a tank XL in 2022 - haven’t regretted it. Gets lots of wrist time. Works with everything. I catch myself staring at it for a few minutes randomly throughout the day too 😅
In modern practice hand-winding is really nice. It is easy enough to change watches from day to day according to outfits, and wind whatever watch you want to wear. It will run until the next day, when you'll probably be winding a different one. But unless you're buying quartz watches, automatics will run down and need to be reset anyway, unless you wear the same watch every day.
The Cartier Tank is my favourite watch. Elegant, classic, and timeless. It is the only serious watch I’ve ever had. I’m saving up to buy a new one after my last one was stolen in a break-in.
I am not a gentleman but have just gotten my Cartier Tank Must extra-large with black leather strap today! Such clean lines and the automatic movement, date, ease of wearing and how lightweight the watch was really got me! Cannot wait to wear it everyday. 😄⌚️
I bought a Mus de Cartier in the 80s for $700. The alligator band broke after about a month and I replaced it with a leather band. What a chick magnet! Women look at your watch, my friends. It's a great investment. I have a fond memory of the salesman at CD Peacock in Chicago where I bought it. I tried it on and said, "I'll take it." To which he replied, "Let me get you a fresh one."
@@gentlemansgazette I even accept seiko donations. Lol. To me the appreciation of fine goods is more important than the desire to own them. I'd rather have 10 pairs of allen edmonds instead of one pair of crocodile shoes
I agree with your conclusions.. I have a large tank must in steel I got from cartier direct (total bargain - the best watch I own) and a used gold tank Louis which was 50% less than retail… Anyone considering either watch should just go for it!
My mom had a Cartier Lincoln Continental in the early 80's. It really was a nice riding car, wish it was still in the family. Never knew the name Cartier had such a long and interesting history...
I think the host has a point preferring the Tank Solo/Must. As of January 2023, you can for example get a Must with an automatic movement for €4‘500 in my native Germany and you get a lot for the money spent. I would prefer a Louis Cartier with a handwound movement, even if it means to spend €13‘100 for the large handwound Modell. Winding a watch is a great experience, the LC is very thin and easily fits under a sleeve.
Yes, its worth it. Particularly because with vintage models and even quartz alternatives with new ones, their are so many price points to choose from. Unlike other century old icons of the gentleman's world, like Burberry trench coats, everything Brooks Brothers and so many other things, quality has not suffered over the years. Contrary to modern popular sensibilities, it goes with virtually everything and is appropriate anywhere other than for rugged outdoors uses or a trip to the gym.
@@gentlemansgazette Right Now I believe a large Tank Americaine with a silver case and a black/blue leather band is right for me. I'm trying to expand my classic Men's wear collection, so I've been going on a GG marathon to get lots of inspiration.
Such a classy watch. Generally, i prefer a proper movement and the JLC Reverso is a much more elaborate mechanism but you just can't beat the class and aesthetic of the Cartier Tank collection. In this case, this is one of the few (if not only) quartz movement I'd pay luxury prices for.
If I have to choose just 1 watch collection, it would be Cartier Tank or JLC Reverso The simplicity, classy look of these square masterpieces are beautifull. You can wear them with casual dress, polo, or suit. Strap color can literally change watch. They are small, dont need toprove anything.
Did you know that Cartier has a buy back program. Also Cartier redesign the infamous Hope diamond into a necklace we know now from a bandeau Mrs Walsh wasn't really interested in the diamond at first but being the salesman that he was suggested that she take it for a weekend try and she was hooked, and the rest is history.
If you like these starting buying the Vintage Must De Tanks now while they're still affordable. The Must De Tank has just re-released at £3500 so vintage pieces are about to rocket.
I believe this kind of video has room for an alternatives section. Seiko Tanks are competitive options under $200 while providing quality and reliability.

Just a small footnote on, ironically, chronology: Edward VII died in 1910, so some time before Cartier started doing their most iconic pieces as discussed here. The insertion of his quote suggested he was around in the 1920s, which he definitely was not. Otherwise a really good video about a distinguished brand.
