When I first started getting into menswear, I wanted to buy an outfit that was unique and I didn't really know how to match colour at the time, so I bought a black and navy blue check jacket with black pants... needless to say I wore it a few times but after that I just stoppd 😂
Raphael, if you ever come to Philly hit me up and Ill give you a tour of the Museum where I work, show you around the city, and I know all the best restaurants, and the ones that are worth the money.
AGREED on Room and Board furniture. Bought a rug, a sofa, and a chair from them. They all fell apart within a few years, and support from the store was terrible!
When you mentioned a Burberry scarf I thought to myself "Yeah, no, those are way too short for their purpose" - Sure enough, I wasn't the only one making that mistake.
Can’t say I have any major regrets as I’ve been able to work with some basics and get a good start to experiment with. Once I can afford more expensive pieces like shirts, and shoes, I’ll replace what I have, but I feel like what I have right now, works well for what it is, and is helping aid me in learning what works well, what doesn’t and how pair things together
Totally Brasilian looking. I get a kick out of him saying he is German. I know very stereotypical way of thinking but I lived in Germany in college... Reminds me of my nephew who is half German but luckily does not look it! 😜
Last year I bought a pair of your socks, and I've worn them at least twice a week, and they are superb and still hold up beautifully. Saving up for a pair of those gloves now.
You are right about appliances. Let’s say you want to get your stainless steel stove, range hood, microwave, fridge and dish washer to match. They are not going to match exactly when sold under the same name. With regard to crew neck sweaters, I believe that you need to look for ones that are not cut too high. When the collar is set lower, you can see the collar of the shirt underneath. I agree that most of the time, you can’t make out the tie when wearing a crew neck.
I love this channel so much, you speak with full heart and mind. Your videos are always so interesting and never get boring. you always have the best topics, keep up the good work!
I can't agree that a Rimowa is a bad investment. You should have bought the alloy version :). That is a classic piece that will last a life. I am super happy with mine :)
Small note: if you are going to go to a Michelin star chef's restaurant, if it is in any way an option, always, always, always get the tasting, chef's menu, 'chef's experience' or however they market it, with the wine pairings - indeed, one of the best one's I had in France was merely labeled the 'prix fixe'. Any given dish you might not be in love with, but a half dozen or 10 removes allows them to show off both real art and skill. The best experiences are very much like a Symphony, with a returning to themes and variations over courses, in color, flavor, textures. About the only caveat is generally the whole table are to be served the same, but they will usually (invariably in my experience, but who knows) let you split the wine pairing with your spouse/date. Also, allergies or strong distastes can be dealt with (almost invariably). If there is a wine you don't particularly like, you are free to ask for another - but beware! Things that seem a little questionable may very well bring out qualities when paired with the course that are the product of the insane genius that marks a world-class sommelier and chef team. Some of these people are out of their minds, using flavor and texture combinations that you think couldn't possibly work - and while _sometimes_ they don't, often times they really do. Depending on the number of courses, you should make sure to leave at least 2 hours, and often upwards of 3. I've had multiple meals where I literally had no idea that 3+ hours had passed. Also, starting with an early dinner is generally a little better, if that's an option.
You've used that green duffel coat in other videos as an example of something good! I remember seeing it and thinking that I would never buy something like that. Glad to see I was right! ;) My biggest examples of buyers remorse are a couple of suits that I got from a direct-to-consumer website called tweedmaker. They were having a sale, I liked the look of the suits, they were very inexpensive for custom suits, so I ordered two. When I got them, they didn't fit well, they draped horribly, and they were just really cheaply made. I could have bought one much nicer suit for the price that I bought those.
I just bought a very bright orange scarf and now i regret owning it to a degree...I wish I had gone with more of a rust color now...something more muted. Great Video! Ill definitely come back and watch this one, as i do with many of your videos. Big Fan!
Rafa, you're hilarious! I regret buying a 2001 Toyota 4Runner for $3,000. It looked to be in relatively good condition, and although the price seemed too good to be true, I disregarded my gut feeling and purchased it. Soon after buying it, it started giving me problems and I had to have the rear differential replaced. Over a couple years it just became a money pit. It's true, you get what you pay for.
Enjoyable video, as always. Here’s a tip, buy a larger size of crew neck jumper. Your jumpers are too small. That green duffle jacket is great, but you have to be the right person for the jacket. Wear it with attitude!
I regret buying a Prada suit when I was 20, naively thinking it would be an investment for life, not realizing how much I would grow in width over the years... wore the suit exactly once and it’s been sitting in my closet for the past 8 years...
Weirdly, I have a Duffel coat from Burberry’s & it is a winter staple. I managed to find it in a charity shop nearby in town (London). It is, however, much longer.
I feel so bad for your terrible trip in China. These all-inclusive trip planning companies really try their best to squeeze every bit of profit and it almost never works well for the consumer.
I remember once u bought Full Brogued Black Wingtip shoes and donated it bcoz Black is too formal and brogues are too casual.....however i had same and i wore it very often with suits as those were my first leather quality shoes. 😊
In 1994, I finished my military service and with the demobilization money in my pocket I entered into a Church store in London, and ended up buying a pair of brown red oxford shoes, that were fashionable at the time. I paid 100 pounds for the shoes, which was really more than I could afford, and I needed a paid of black shoes, and these were too flashy for me. But I kept them, because of the princely price tag. Recently, I sat down and did some basic restoration. I occasionally wear them, having made a bit more peace - but it was not what I needed.
I like the duffle coat. Dark denim, boots and a grey sweater would look great with that. I know you said you don’t like crew neck sweaters, but one of those with no collared shirt would be a good look in my opinion. Cheers.
I actually like that pocket square and have similar ones. I am not a clean cut Euro suit guy, but rather a blazer / sport coat person with contrast pants or jeans and wingtip or monk strap shoes with colorful ascot and pocket squares. I love that way and I always get compliments for being unique in my way.
The problem for many of us is that we outgrew our fine clothing purchases. So when you figure the life of a purchase, consider the price of outgrowing it.
Regret buying my 2011 mustang without heated seats. I was only 20 at the time so money was somewhat tight but never go cheap when it comes to this option! The winters are a nightmare!!
One of your better vids. Thank you. On a trip to Mexico, I bought a pair of snakeskin boots for $400 that looked great but never fit right. I wore them all of three times before unloading them on eBay for a fraction of their cost.
9:40 belive me it would be the exact same thing, but they gave you a free Rimowa luggage. Honestly Im pretty sorry to hear about your little detour in China. Grey Flannel Eau de Toilette @ 9.95 - too sweet. Cross Titanium Townsend fountain pen @ $175 - works well, nice weight, beautiful wet 18K gold medium nib, but I still can't get over the slippery grip. Oh well, I have the RL dark green version of your duffle coat. The length is below my knees. It is the warmest coat that I have ever owned. Every time that I wear it I get compliments.
If I might make a polite suggestion. I have been watching your stuff for months now and really enjoy it. I haven't yet taken the plunge on these things in practice because frankly I am overwhelmed still by the idea of buying the "right" kind of pieces that will last, look great, and pair well with a lot of things. Anyway, I find that I almost always have to turn the volume to max and be in a quieter environment to hear your dialogue in the videos (not using headphones). This gets rather frustrating because you give a lot of great information that I want to hear. For what it's worth, no, I don't have hearing issues and I find that the music is fine, it just seems the dialogue needs to be better normalized to an appropriate level. Appreciate all the videos!
@@gentlemansgazette Yeah, can't say on that. I have a OnePlus 6T (Android). Like I said, it isn't that one can't hear the dialogue but overall it is fairly easily drowned out even at my max volume. I guess if it checks out with everyone else then maybe it's my problem. Just wanted to put it out there in case it wasn't just me. Thanks again!
I bought a blazer and only wore it once due to it being a poor fit. Terrible purchase BUT it was the night I met my partner so maybe it was just a different sort of investment? Have to agree about the crew neck jumpers, have had heaps and they're OK to wear with a crew neck T-shirt but a V-neck can be worn with crew or V-neck T-shirts, dress shirts, shirt and tie; much more versatile.
When I first starting buying Suits on eBay I made some huge mistakes. When they say "know your measurements" they mean it. I have some suits - new with tags - that I have had to return, sell, and some that I will end up giving away. Hard lesson to learn. Wish I had read Flusser on proportions prior to starting on that journey. It really takes the benefit out of a bargain when you can't wear it.
@@eyeheartsushi2212 Alan Flusser's book "Dressing The Man"- Great read that really helped me make sense of a lot of the so called "style rules". Get a used copy from ebay. Well worth having as a reference.
I can see buying the green duffle coat. I play it safe with overcoats in black or charcoal because they go with everything I own, and I am wearing them for business. If I had bought a bright green duffle coat, I would try to get some wear out of it on Sundays or when running errands during the week.
My cashmere polo socks are the best I’ve had comfort and quality wise. With the specific brand it is better to buy the limited run items the replenish items are the blended fabrics.
I have a Burberry scarf and it’s very long and soft. I like my Rimowa suitcase as well... it’s been around the world and back with no damage and is the only suitcase I have that’s ever gotten a compliment from both a baggage handler, and a random passerby
Short sleeve dress shirts are a definite no, but short sleeve casual shirts are okay. If you might possibly where a blazer or a tie with it, or tuck it in, it should be long sleeve.
So I’ve been ruminating on this $557 online class I regret buying. So I clicked on this video and realized that I actually also hated paying for graduate school too. I feel better now 😩😂 great video
Try styling your green jacket with a longish black scarf draped behind the hood and wearing the jacket not all buttoned up. Wear the sweater with that shirt without a tie and with the top button unbuttoned. And take the pointed corners out and above the crew neck. A short scarf is worn crossed without knotting inside a jacket. It won't be bulky. All the best!
I would never buy the Rimowa polycarbonate models too. But I love my aluminum case. We should stick with the classics. I like your honesty about Michelin star restaurants. Great video!
Sometimes these one off purchases need to made just the once for whatever personal reasons. I got myself a bottle of 300 British pound champagne. And I’ll tell you what, never again! Just the once is enough.
When I was first getting into dressing better I bought a handful of button collar shirts without the exact neck size only because they were on sale. After buying them I quickly realized how important neck sizes were and have a bunch of shirts that I cannot really wear.
Great channel! Don't get me started on Rimowa. I bought one several years ago and had repeated problems with accidentally changing the lock combination. My style of packing and unpacking is the complete opposite of the "logical German" way, my mind being driven in a thousand directions with a thousand distractions. And somehow on more than one occasion I double-bumped that horrible little button and goodbye combination. That Rimowa is now collecting dust in my attic.
I completely agree with regards to bold accessories; I bought a Pink-Fuchsia knit tie from Drake's and I only wore it once. It's very nice but it's a bit too loud for my taste now.
Luggage-wise, I recommend Columbia Sportswear! They have some outlet stores around the US and it still wasn't super cheap, but was completely worth it, high quality.
Rimowa just when it’s aluminum😁👍🏻 Things I regret buying? Lloyd’s, there are the thing if you don’t know but than I started wearing Shoes from shoepassion and scarosso I never looked back. And that as well just the start. Another thing is ties, got into it but in the end I just wore the same every time. Nowadays I hurt wear chinos, Oxford shirts and a blazer. Most comfortable. Keep up the good work and cheers from Germany 👍🏻🙏🏻
Surprised you hated Cosme! I went with my wife recently as well, and we loved it. It completely changed the way I make margaritas (hint - the secret ingredient is Combier, not Cointreau, Grand Marnier, curacao, or any other triple sec. Only Combier will do. It should also be shaken and served up with only 3 ingredients - 2oz jose cuervo tradicional blanco, 3/4oz combier, 3/4oz lime juice. No salt rim!). Also, you probably don't get much regional Oaxacan food in Minnesota, but the reason that Cosme only serves it as a sauce is because it has such incredible depth of flavor, even more so than most other places' 20+ ingredient moles. Each batch has a little bit of the prior one going back (no joke) a thousand years. Why put such an amazing sauce over a dumb piece of chicken? An heirloom corn tortilla is all you need! My biggest regret purchase was a Penguin white dinner jacket made out of polyester that I only wore once - at a family New Years party at home. We didn't even leave the house.
My regrets mostly revolve around not knowing my size and how clothes should properly fit due to not wearing such before. These include some very illfitting waistcoats that got worn only once, a size too small bowlerhat, a too big overcoat, too short trousers and a pair of ranger boots that made my foot bleed after a short walk in them.

So far I've agreed with your 'what not to buy' and 'what not to wear' 100% spot on.
The other presenters should do this topic aswell.
D Max definitely
Preston just did.
Especially in NYC ten years ago it seemed like everyone and their dog were wearing Burberry scarves...
You looked awesome in high school, super Latin American!
Totally Brasilian looking. I get a kick out of him saying he is German. I know very stereotypical way of thinking but I lived in Germany in college... Reminds me of my nephew who is half German but luckily does not look it! 😜
Had me in stitches with the scarf! I replayed that part 5 times ... in tears. LOL
That Cosme main course is like the high-class version of Taco Bell chips with hot sauce packets.
I love this channel so much, you speak with full heart and mind. Your videos are always so interesting and never get boring. you always have the best topics, keep up the good work!
Thank you! We appreciate your kind words. :)
I can't agree that a Rimowa is a bad investment. You should have bought the alloy version :). That is a classic piece that will last a life. I am super happy with mine :)
You in that coat looks like my friend on assassin's creed unity
Sven "It's not easy being green"...Also Kermit
Jeans-flavoured condoms 🤣
Durex jeans condoms are very popular in Europe. They are branded jeans as easy to put on and off, theyre not jeans flavored.
@@gplusgplus2286 hey if my girls not gagging on denim then im not interested
You have to try a aluminium Rimowa, mine has held up fantastically over the past decade.
Cheers.
I bet SRS will sell it to you
It's a real statement piece. I think it could work. Yellow/creme is what I would work with. Light grey trousers.
Finally....my dose of classy content......I.. frankly... adore your videos...and so you.
9:40 belive me it would be the exact same thing, but they gave you a free Rimowa luggage. Honestly Im pretty sorry to hear about your little detour in China. I've just back from there and only spent 1000 dollars (tickets included) I was there in a month and live like a king. Altough I did for myself the trip not related on a shifty company.
Oh man, I loved you in the movie "Elf"! Cheers!
Grey Flannel Eau de Toilette @ 9.95 - too sweet. Cross Titanium Townsend fountain pen @ $175 - works well, nice weight, beautiful wet 18K gold medium nib, but I still can't get over the slippery grip. (But I think I'll take it out for the holiday season.) Nook ebook reader $100 and HP Stream 8 (Windows) tablet $90 - I just don't enjoy the reading experience, and the touch interface is too cumbersome for my computing needs. A beautiful Queen reverse wormgrove sowbelly stockman with satin finish 1095 blsdes that felt great in the hand @ $95 - one of the springs broke. Happy Holidays Gentleman's Gazette.
Strange, I have zero issues and we tried tons of devices and browsers
Robert Pearson Should I google “Flusser?”
@@eyeheartsushi2212 Alan Flusser's book "Dressing The Man"- Great read that really helped me make sense of a lot of the so called "style rules". Get a used copy from ebay. Well worth having as a reference.
Robert Pearson Thanks. I *have* heard of the book but didn’t remember the author’s name. Good tip about eBay. Thanks.
I was cracking up at the restaurant story. A plate of sauce! Lol
They'd have taken that saucy plate off of my bill!!!
I saw you in that green coat with the hood up and thought "Hmmmm. Kermit the Frog has upped his style game...."
I'm a huge whiskey collector, for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to buy a £1500 bottle of limited edition tequila.
He he. Auch
I’ll come and help you drink it.
Well if you need some help finishing it ...
Sometimes these one off purchases need to made just the once for whatever personal reasons. I got myself a bottle of 300 British pound champagne. And I’ll tell you what, never again! Just the once is enough.
You gotta teach people to appreciate that! Otherwise they'll just chug it all when you die.
I like crew neck sweaters. When you're wearing a shirt and tie a crew neck looks more sprezzatura than a V-neck. Casual nonchalance!
It's not casual nonchalance if it looks contrived. Crew neck sweaters with tie look neither elegant nor functional.
@Horang Pungryuga wonderfully put. 🙌
Now, err, what language is that? And , more to the point, what does it mean? 🤔
@Horang Pungryuga and I agree with you. Do you mind my asking which language is that?
When I was first getting into dressing better I bought a handful of button collar shirts without the exact neck size only because they were on sale. After buying them I quickly realized how important neck sizes were and have a bunch of shirts that I cannot really wear.
Unfortunately I regret buying a black fedora hat.
Why black..?
I wish it was at least grey and I would've worn it more.
I think this is the best video I've seen in a long time. Thanks! So honest!!!
I completely agree with regards to bold accessories; I bought a Pink-Fuchsia knit tie from Drake's and I only wore it once. It's very nice but it's a bit too loud for my taste now.
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I am a new sub to the channel, but have been all over the catalogue these past few days. Happy to be here!
Welcome
Not gonna lie that fit is fire, i really like that duffle coat. Tbh the entire ensemble is nice in my eyes at least. Love your content, keep it up!👍🏼
Luggage-wise, I recommend Columbia Sportswear! They have some outlet stores around the US and it still wasn't super cheap, but was completely worth it, high quality.
I really like that blue pocket square with the orange piping/trim.
Rimowa just when it’s aluminum😁👍🏻
Things I regret buying?
Yeah
My regrets mostly revolve around not knowing my size and how clothes should properly fit due to not wearing such before. These include some very illfitting waistcoats that got worn only once, a size too small bowlerhat, a too big overcoat, too short trousers and a pair of ranger boots that made my foot bleed after a short walk in them.
I feel better knowing I'm not the only one who has made regrettable purchases.
I actually think that if you find a way to darken the green duffle coat, it could be a pretty nice coat to wear in the fall
