WD-40 stands for "water displacing". The "40" is the 40th formulation that was tried during its development. Fun fact - WD-40 was never patented so the formulation did not have to be published and thus their competitors could not copy them and sell a knock off product.

I work in a chemical plant. The main thing about it is a constant flow of water. There is water in pipes, water on pipes, water on the ground, water in the ground, water in the air, water frozen into literally tons of ice every day, and even water here you don't want it.
Chemicals don't need a lot of water probably, but the people who work around them need lots and lots of flushing and flow in order to dillute and minimize the hazards inherent to the various other fluids.
As a result, everything made of steel is rusted. Stainless won't hold up to some stuff and is too expensive to other stuff, so that's limited too.
We use a product called Knocker Loose, and it blasts down into the rust and onto the metal beneath, saving countless hours and knuckles.
It's not infallible, but it's pretty great.

my mother used to work at a factory where they made WD-40 here in wisconsin years ago... it's closed down now. but we used to get that stuff by the cases because she could get it extremely cheap. not that it's expensive stuff... but any discount on a good product is a plus in my book. also i love that you explained how it disperses water since many people claim it's good for lubing chains and another metal products. the product was never created to actually lubricate... the WD literally stands for "water displacement".... but their silicone spray is really nice stuff as well. good knowledgeable video scotty... also... i'm a scotty as well. also have a couple friends to this day that still call me scooter. lol

I don't subscribe very often, but I subscribed to you a long time ago. I am not an auto mechanic, but I have been working on automotive for almost 50 years. I enjoy it when you teach me something that I didn't know or confirm something I did.
This time I have something for you. By trade I am a Journeyman Wireman IBEW, a Certified Safe Technician, and a Certified Professional Locksmith. You showed to use WD-40 in an automotive lock. Where you are, it is not a bad idea. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, a hot dry dusty desert. WD-40 has an oil base that collects dust and drys to a sticky laquery film. I will use WD-40 as a cheap cleaning solvent, but then rinse it out with a greaseless lubricant like LPS1, or dry graphite, depending on what the application is. Some automotive locks use a light grease.
Thanks for all the videos, have a Happy New Year, and keep your engine reved.

Like the guy on Greek Wedding-he used Windex on EVERYTHING!!! : ) Thanks Scotty. I have a 2004 Ford Freestar 4.2 running rough, Check engine light started flashing-got all sorts of error codes! . Changed Spark plugs and wires, car ran better but check engine light stayed on and I kept getting P02196,P0172 and P0174 Error codes-rich and lean. Changed all four O2 Sensors. MAF, EGR, reset ECU, Air filter, fuel filter, Oil and oil filter after a motor flush, fuel pressure regulator and cleaned PCV valve. Also put Sea Foam in gas tank. Car runs 100% better but still has a hard idle, check engine light with codes P02196, 172&174? So I'm thinking a vacuum leak somewhere? Can't wait to try the WD40! Thank you!!!

Love the vid! The reason you would not want to use WD-40 in door locks is that once it has dried, it leaves a residue that tends to gum up the locks' cylinder pins, causing dust to and dirt to accumulate. Far better to use either powdered graphite or dry silicone spray. One time as an experiment, I sprayed a section of steel plate with a generous amount WD and let it set for a week. When I came back to it, it had mostly dried but was still tacky with dust clinging to it. After a month it was fully dried and indeed was doing a good job of protecting the metal. However, it took a rag soaked with lacquer thinner and some vigorous scrubbing to remove it. I found that while not quite as good as battery terminal spray, WD makes a nice substitute.

WD-40 is basically kerosene and makes rubber break down and crumble over time. I wouldn't spray it all over my vacuum hoses or suspension parts. Sometimes heavy duty silicone spray is a better choice. WD-40 is great for wiping off oil, tar, sticker residue, and grease.

I enjoy watching and learning from someone with experience and your videos are no exception, however I do have an issue with suggesting people spray WD-40 on rubber parts, suspension or otherwise. Rubber and lubricants are not compatible unless the lubricant is silicone. I keep silicone spray around for specifically spraying on rubber components. Not only am I not a fan of WD-40 I as well as a lot of mechanics I know have a preference to ZEP 45 for rusted and corroded components!
