    I am so happy, so many of you guys enjoyed the snippet of our show!!
    With the circumstances right now, the world needs Great music full of energy! So I came up with “TOKYO FUNK SESSIONS” which is the highest form of energy we could give back to encourage people. The song, as you know, is inspired by D’angelo’s “Chicken Grease” fused with my own "Love Is the Answer”. I was really helped and motivated by his show when he performed at Summer Sonic Festival in Japan. Also, I appreciate the band members who always put their pure spirit into the music and a big shoutout to Jun Miyakawa for the arrangement of the song. Finally, special thanks to Blue Note Tokyo for always giving me great opportunities!

So nice to see a real horn section; synthesized horns are just not the same. Incredible trombone solo. While this a great performance and song, it's not 'Japanese music', not even close. Most Japanese music is played with an shamisen (三味線), also known as sangen (三絃) or samisen (all meaning "three strings"), is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. Also, the riff and music is a take on D'Angelo's 'Chicken Grease' song from his Voodoo album. Even the way she sings some of the lyrics in the versus is in the same theme as his (especially the live performance version).

    Wow-I'm an old school funker(was there at the birth of the Funk movement, back in the mid-1970s-and let me tell you all-this rivals some of the best I've seen, coming from the great Funk groups of the 70s and 80s! This audio/video presentation confirms the prophecy back in the late 1970s, that "the Funk will never die"!
    It(Funk)died here in America, but it somehow, over the decades, took root and began to blossom and flourish in the hearts of those NOT YET BORN, back in the 1970s and 80s. This is a PHENOMENON I never thought was possible, until I saw the newer generation(mostly on youtube in the last 3 months or so)carrying on this wonderful music we(American Blacks)created back, over a HALF CENTURY ago!
    Through IGNORANCE and WILLFUL NEGLECT, we killed-or allowed our music to be killed off-and now we are left without a LEGACY to pass on to our progeny, here in America, some OVER FOUR DECADES LATER, after the Funk movement started; but it(the funk)has strangely enough SURVIVED-and is now in the more than capable hands of this new and younger generation-who somehow, SAW THE LIGHT-and are now the present-day torch carriers of this which we started(I am in my 60s now)back some five to five and a half decades ago! 3-15-22.

      Funk had a nice little period of mainstream relevance in Japan in the 80's. My mom was stationed in Okinawa at the time, and some of the popular music revolved around this kind of music that has come to be known as City Pop--popular music with lots of funk and R&B grooves, definitely smoother and cleaner than what you might find in the US, but still undeniably rooted in funk. City Pop became popular again within the past five years thanks to the internet rediscovering it, and it's probably that that has led to having these kinds of live shows. And you're right...I'd say it's definitely in good hands.

    • @lostsurferjames5

      I think music tends to cycle, it never truly dies but becomes more loved in niche circles. A genre can have a mainstream "death" but there are always people who will continue loving it. Tom Misch, who funny enough is signed under Blue Note, is a great example of the new generation of funk.

    • @rolandbush8463
      @rolandbush8463 2 года назад +2

      What killed funk was rap, Michael Jackson and Prince and the 10 member groups being reduced to 3 or 4 member groups. The horn sections were the first to go then drum machines became the thing lastly the synth bass came out. Funk had roughly a good twenty year run, and it went the way of jazz, blues, soul, r&b and so on. All these genres of music we made in the 19th and 20th centuries were made at a time when our heads were getting bashed in so anybody copying these genres will always be a pale imitation at best.

    • @charlesbrazell2136
      @charlesbrazell2136 2 года назад

      @@rolandbush8463 From what you've stated, I'll take it you're at least my age(I'm 64)-or close to it. And you are absolutely correct in your analysis/reply, Roland. You know all of it (eliminating the horns and replacing the bass player and drummers with synthesized bass lines and drum machines)was NOT BY ACCIDENT-BUT BY DELIBERATE DESIGN! Personally though, I liked the early Prince albums, and the Off The Wall lp, by Michael Jackson.
      Also-Disco, in addition to Rap, I believe were the two main forms of BASTARDIZED MUSIC which were responsible for the DEATH of our music(and everybody else's) here in America-which also allowed white folks to catch up to, and sing like us now. But it's nice to hear someone else has the correct analysis about the things which were responsible for the death our music-which was like no one else's on this entire planet.
      Just thought I'd mention also-both Rap and Disco, came out in the year 1979-which is when our creative Black funk and progressive R&B music, also began to wane and no longer be made. Coincidence? You be the judge. I appreciate your comments Mr. Bush; you are the only one, besides myself, it appears, who has not forgotten THE TRUE REASONS that led to our music being destroyed. I'm sure there are others who remember these things like you and I do, but you are the first to comment on it, I noticed, after I spoke on it. Thank you sir, and God bless you, for your "dead-on", or "spot-on" comments. 4-11-22.

THAT SAID, this performance, OMG, got me up and down my chair like a little boy, just soooo gooood! I grew up in the Philadelphia area. A bright day was riding my bike to the record store because I had heard that James Brown or some other hero had released a new album. That was a bright day, even if it was raining.
    I didn't witness the development of a new art -- Funk -- I was part of it. Supporting artists, and marveling at the creation of something from nothing. Sometimes, a magical thing happened. You put the needle down on the record, and the sound was so funky it made you laugh in astonishment.
    Laugh in astonishment.
    This music delivered joy, nourishment and healing, fascination, and pride. It was a uniquely American music created by Black Americans. In the milieu of the 60's and 70's as the movement for basic civil rights abraded away at the warts in the American psyche, this music slowly spread from insular home in the Black community.
    Bands learned the style, and Funk proceeded from its root-bound container and was planted in musical fields around the world.. Funk became here to stay.
    Kind of.
    Beginning in the 70's through the 80's, you couldn't find as many groups that played Funk. As Rap and Hip Hop emerged, these new artists sampled and quoted Funk and Soul artistry, but did not produce it in its native form. That included horns, country stroking guitars, basses, compelling lead singers, improvisational soloing, counterpoint, back beat, call and response, hits, dynamics and the conversation that only a band possessing instruments can make.
    I am overjoyed to have found this video. Nao Yoshioka is nothing less than a Soul Sister and Four Star General in The Army of Funk.
    Her instrument (voice) is refined. Strong, thick, tonally pleasing, and technically solid. Her stage presence is authentic and sincere.
    To put it another way, her singing, dancing and direction is her telling the truth.
    I sure do want to hear more from her.
    Funk is the hardest music to play, especially to improvise to. Any musician playing a solo is tasked with creating a story within melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic "constraints." But the additional rhythmic demands of Funk -- dancing with the instrument on and around The One raises the bar for the soloist.
    Eddie Harris
    Maceo Parker
    Fred Wesley
    Niles Landgren
    Kenny Garrett
    Victor Wooten
    Susanne Alt
    Marcus Miller
    Alex Han
    These are some of the people I listen to. And now, thank God, one more:
    Nao Yoshioka
