  • I've mentioned the Fujifilm XF 70-300mm on this channel a few times. We knew it was coming but we now know it's going to be available in March and it's already available for pre-order at several stores.
    Here are the main features:
    • 107-457mm full-frame equivalent
    • Weather Resistant
    • "A" Position Lock
    • Linear Motor
    • Minimum Focus 0.83M (.33x)
    • 5.5 Stops OIS
    • Filter thread: 67mm
    • 580g
    • Compatible with XF1.4X WR TC and XF 2x WR TC
    • $799.99 USD / $1050 CAD / £729 GBP
    In this video, I take a look at what we know so far and how the lens fits in with the current lenses already available from Fuji. Should you buy this instead of the 50-200 or replace your old lenses? How will it hold up as a wildlife lens? Whatever your shooting style, the addition of this lens is a rather exciting prospect for Fuji X shooters.

    I can not justify any camera or lens purchase.
    Meanwhile I placed a pre-order for the 70-300😎

      I know that feeling. I haven’t yet (I’m eyeing up the new 10-24 as I’ve not got a wide yet) but it’s ever so tempting. Let me know how you get on with it :)

    Very nice Steve. I am excited to try it and consider to purchase it. I have no tele lens yet. I currently have lenses in the range from wide angle 16mm f/1.4 and other fixt focus lenses up to 50 mm f/2. I want to extend my options for landscape and want to try wildlife. It would be my first Fuji zoom lens.The size is very appealing.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +2

      The size and weight is just about perfect, I think. Don’t forget, you can use it with the 1.4 teleconverter and it’s worth giving that a go if you find the reach a problem.

  • @simonandhelenb

    For me the biggest thing about this lens is the 83cm minimum focus distance as this will allow you to get really close to flowers etc for subject separation compared to the 100-400.
    If this lens had be released a couple of years ago before I switched to Fuji I might well have ended up buying it instead of the 100-400. (Or, more likely, I'd still be trying to decide between the two). As things stand now I'm not sure if it'll find its way into my camera bag or not... Maybe if I can pick up a used bargain in a few years.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +1

      I’d not thought of the minimum focusing distance. That’s a great benefit of the lens there.
      There are 3 of us with X-T3s and it’s likely one of us will buy it. I suspect Dad will get it first.
      But, yes, if you have the 100-400, it’s a tougher sell. I think it might replace many people’s 55-200mm. I’ve seen some shots from it now and the quality really is there. I’d love to do a comparison... but it gives you extra reach and the ability to use the teleconverters, so that’s another consideration.

    Thank you for pointing out the option of cropping vs. a larger telephoto reach. For some people (including me) this is probably good enough. That said some of the lucky reviewers' demo pictures didn't look very sharp to me. It varied, I don't know why?

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +1

      It’s likely they weren’t as sharp because they were rushing to do the reviews. Of the ones I’ve seen, the 70-300 looks to perform as well (in some cases better) as the 50-200.

    This sounds like a great lens to have, but I already have three zooms, the 16-80, 55-200 and the monster (heavy) 100-400 which I use on a monopod 95 percent of the time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Steve. Stay safe.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography

      I think some will get rid of their 55-200 lenses so they can get the 70-300.
      Thanks for the comment ;)

    Yep, I would like one for airshows and to dabble with wildlife during woodland walks...just a shame it's a slow lens, but then again it will be easy to carry about. 👍📷🇬🇧

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +2

      Slow, perhaps, but I looked at the Tameron we had before and it’s the same Aperture range. We got some great images with that, so I suspect this will be the same 😊

    Nice to hear your thoughts on it Steve. I placed my pre-order for the 70-300 yesterday evening as soon as I could, I couldn’t get over the price - definitely expected this to be much closer to £1k. It will replace my 55-200 as I just don’t see the need to have both. Slightly slower (and a slow lens overall) however when I need something faster that’s when the f2 primes come out! I have tried the 50-140 twice and I just don’t get it. Yes it’s versatile however as I mentioned when I need pin sharp images/shallow DOF/in low light I wheel out the primes. Really looking forward to this lens and your future thoughts on it.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +1

      I think our 55-200s might go the same way 😊 we’ll have to see. I was expecting a £1k price point as well and having primes for the specific focal ranges you need is a great idea.
      I did talk about the 50-140 in a previous video. It’s best use is for portraiture, it’s a nice fast lens, 2.8 give you the right depth of field and the 80-105 focal range is slap bang in it’s sweet spot. So, really it’s all about having a zoom that professionals could use for portraits. I’m not sure why so many landscape photographers seem to use it.
      Anyway, I’m thrilled you’ve put your order in for a 70-300. I hope you get many amazing shots with it 😁

    Looking forward to this lens, but disappointed at the 67mm filter size. Consistency with the 16-80 and 10-24 of 72mm would have been ideal. Canon gets this right with it's professional lens why can't Fujifilm.

      Yeah I agree. But I think doing that would have made it heavier.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +1

      I do agree and yes, it was probably a weight thing. The 18-135 is 67mm IIRC. The major benefit of it, though, is how light it is compared to other options.

    I would perhaps be interested in something like an X-E4 if it would be weather-resistant and had at least a teeny bit of a grip built in instead of as an add-on!
    Now the X-E4 at its current price just doesn't make sense! You want something a little bit grippy or somewhere to place your thumb and the X-E4 becomes more expensive than the X-S10 which has IBIS!
    Either way, as I said, I would like a weather sealed camera as a 2nd body, if possible, and neither the X-E4 nor the X-S10 is.

      If it’s a second body, would you consider an X-T2?

    • @TimvanderLeeuw
      @TimvanderLeeuw 3 года назад +1

      @@SteveMellorPhotography Well that would be as capable as my X-H1 AF-wise.
      I would prefer to be able to advantage of AF improvements made since then. ;)
      However if an X-H2 materialises that might become my primarybody and the X-H1 could take the role of secondary body then... :D
      (I like the X-H1 formfactor, for the good grip and good position of the shutter button. The X-S10 would be a perfect 2nd body if if was weather sealed!)

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +2

      Or, of course, there’s the X-T3... depends if you want a smaller body or not but the price is comparable to the others now.

    Seriously, there’s nothing exciting about a variable zoom lens made of plastic, not weather resistant, and overpriced! A lens that gives you 300mm is not good enough for bird, or any sport photography, 300 (1.5/450) is not enough. Fuji knew this and allowed us to use the teles. Well now the lens will cost $500 more bcs Fuji also overprice the fracking teles! So this lens is like 80% of Fuji zoom lenses weak, and overpriced! Guys the message is clear Fuji want us to shoot prime.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography  3 года назад +4

      There is something exciting about a variable zoom like this. Perhaps it's not for you, that's fine, but don't disparage others who are interested in this.
      Frankly, the thought of seeing my elderly father able to take the sorts of wildlife shots he used to absolutely fills me with excitement, especially as he can't handle the heavy 100-400mm and the 200mm is too short a range for what he wants.
      He's only ever had a 300mm lens, max, and has got some phenomenal wildlife shots. It's nonsense to suggest you can't do ANY sort of wildlife or sports photography with this. After all, people have been using the 55-200mm and the 50-140mm to do both with, and have been happy with their results. As with other lenses, you have to pick the right tool for the job. There are some jobs this lens will do very well and some sports/wildlife shots that will work perfectly with this.
      The lens is only around £100 more than the 50-200mm (a well-loved lens in its own right) and it's at a focal range that has been incredibly popular on APS-C cameras for many years. Also, they don't have a prime that would come close to the focal range of this without spending £6k. It's not overpriced. It's at a similar price point for other Fuji lenses and likely to be very popular because of that. Could you get a Sigma or Tameron cheaper, of course... but that doesn't come without its own set of problems until they start releasing glass for the X systems.
      You're also erroneously claiming the lens is not weather resistant, which it is.

      @@SteveMellorPhotography Be as it may, this lens is subpar I rather keep using my Canon 100-400 L. Fuji zooms are not there and they are overpriced! The only good zooms are the 16-55 f2.8 and the 50-140 f2.8 in the medium and medium long and the 10-24 f4. My friend I tell you this, time never lies, and as soon fuji open the mount we will see Fuji bringing better zoom lenses, because sigma, tamron, Zeiss (which are expensive but great) and Laowa will kick current weak fuji zooms. I'm just not a fan each system has its flaws, Fuji's is overpricing and weak zooms. I rather stay prime, I own the 16, 23, 35 (f1.4), the 56 f1.2, 80 f2.8 and the 200 f2 (won in an event). I also own the GF 110 f2 and the 45 f2.8. So yep I love Fuji but I wont say something is wright if is NOT, specially if is overpriced.
