One of the better reviews of this lens because it nails the fact that this is an obvious upgrade from the 55-200mm. I have the 55-200 and it is GREAT but two other reasons I’m looking forward to picking it up is the focus limiter and the lens zoom lock for when you are walking around and the lens eventually extends due to gravity. Great review!
I agree with your analysis and I would add another reason to switch: the lock button, which I really miss on the 55-200mm. It is very practical when you walk, preventing the lens to extend due to your movements and it’s weight.
Thanks - nice preview. I have the 70-300 lens on order. I already have 100-400 + 1.4 teleconverter but the 70-300 will be much more convenient for travelling.
The 70-300mm is a much expected lens for all travel photographers, a great balance between portability and sacrifices. Even when fully extended the 70-300mm manages to remain nearly the same size as the 100-400mm when the 100-400mm is at 100mm only, so the 70-300mm got cleverly compact for the focal range taking fully advantage of being a aps-c lens. Paring this lens with the 16-80mm lens is the perfect match as the 16-80mm is slightly soft at 80mm therefore the 70-300mm at 80mm should be visibly sharper I assume. All great news, weather resistance, teleconverter compatible, and all other minor goodies. This should be a very successful lens for Fuji assuming they didn't cut too many corners to keep the price point below the 100-400mm. I've pre-ordered mine nonetheless, I expect it to become my workhorse for zoom while traveling and compact enough to come with me wherever I go to. And for those who really don't need 300mm or teleconverter compatibility the 55-200mm can be found for bargain prices, so everyone can find something that fits their financial needs. I do hope Fuji is truly working on a fast ultra wide like the rumors say about a possible 10mm prime. Would be awesome. But on the camera body side I really hope Fuji will improve autofocus on video, or at very least finish the 30min video recording, let the camera chop the file in every 30 minutes in the background, but let the camera keep on rolling in the foreground. And I hope these changes won't be exclusive to their newest bodies expected X-H2 and X-T5. These 2 issues is what makes the X-T4 nearly the perfect aps-c camera in the market today.
Totally agree with what you are saying. I recently sold my 16-80mm lens as I was not really satisfied with it but definitely a great lens for travel. I hope indeed that the lens will be sharp with a good AF. For the 10mm fast lens that would be interesting to see as it is something that they don’t have in their line up and I feel like lately they have been focused on redundant products
Je découvre ta petite chaîne qui a tout pour devenir une grande. J’aime beaucoup tes vidéos, les facecam comme les POV et autre, super travail. Hâte de la voir décoller :D
Thank you Thierry for your informative presentation of the Fuji 70-300mm . I have pre-ordered this lens and hoping it will arrive sometime soon. I am looking to use it for street and landscape photography I also have the Fuji 80mm Macro with the 1.4x TC so looking to use this with the 70-300mm.for longer focal length. I was a former Nikon photographer full frame but downsized 2 years ago to Fujifilm now owning the XT-4. Love Fujifilm :)
Glad that you enjoyed the video and that you Love Fujifilm too! Nice, I hope that you will enjoy it! I will rent it and try to make a hands on video once it is available
I agree with you, the size and teleconverter means that I too want to upgrade eventually... I'd loose about 1/2 a stop of light. I use my 55-200 for events and i would love to shoot more birds, but the 55-200 just doesn't keep up, the better focus on the 70-300 probably will... I'll wait till "kitamura" has used stock and then trade in my 55-200 for a used 70-300... by the way loved the fox video!
@@ThierryGibralta I use it for indoor events. Usually decently lit events. It’s a local church here in Okinawa. I hate surrendering that half stop of light, but at the same time that extra reach is impressive.
I have the fuji 55-200mm and the canon 70-200mm EF L IS f2.8 I am happy with both and the plus of canon 2.8 but more weight in the backpack and ring for the tripod. I notice that I need more focal mm and my doubts is whether the 70-300 with the TC 1.4 would give me what is necessary or think about the 100-400mm with the TC 1.4 (I also value the overweight)
I have the 55-200mm, and while I like it...I just wish it was sharper at the 200mm end. This 70-300mm with weather resistance and being able to take teleconverters is a game changer!
I'm a little on the fence. I own neither of them but am considering getting something like this. However, when I look in Flickr groups, the 55-200 is subjects are usually people and bigger animals, while the 70-300 are usually insects and birds. And for my personally, I'm just using the lens to take photos of my kids in a ball game for example, nothing professional. Which lens would you think I should get given this criteria? I'm having the feeling that the use cases are pretty different (maybe it's the photos people post on Flickr, not a good sample size?) I have done some insect photography with my kids, but I don't see myself doing this often, and bird photography isn't my thing just yet. I'm leaning towards the 55-200 but it's a much older lens, and the 70-300 seems to be a better value today.
I think that for this usecase both the 55-200 and 70-300 would work. But depending on where you stand during those games you might want the extra reach or not. The next consideration would be budget. The 70-300 is a little more expensive. And finally if you want WR or not. I would suggest you rent both and that way you can decided easily to see which fits your usecase
So this is true for all LM lenses. Because the focus motors are moved via electromagnetism, if the camera is not ON, you will hear some noise when moving the lens. It is a normal thing though
The 70-300 is a bit sharper as the 55-200... even till the long end of 300mm...I saw an online comparison. I am back zo Fuji and need a tele lens. For Years I had the 55-200 and was happy with it but now I will wait for the 70-300.
Superb ! very nice preview! but I wonder... I already have the 100-400, the 50-200 and the 1.4x tc so upgrading the 55-200 bought in June 2020 very unfortunate.... Hard choice.... I use a lot the 55-200 for family portrait outside in forest, park and garden .
If you have the 100-400mm I don’t think you need to get this one, in terms of need only. But hey we don’t only get what we need right? ^^ I will rent the 70-300mm this month and make a video to let you know if it is worth it
I use a variable ND filter for video (URTH ND2-400) and a polarizer for shooting landscapes/water or getting rid of refections in general (Kenko Pro 1D)
Thank you so much! The 55-200 is a great one honestly. It really depends on what you want to do with it. For me I fell short when I really wanted to zoom but the quality of the 55-200 is still great. I would suggest you rent it first and see if it fits your needs
you're making some interesting points of course but you're not all correct, since you will add more weight to your bag !!! The new lens will not only be bigger and heavier but you will be adding the Teleconverter which is a nice chunk of glass and you will spend a bunch more money doing so !!! and you'll have a hard time selling the 55 to 200mm (cause there will will be soooo many for sale !!! 😠) Sorry!
