holy cow I'm glad I heard that disclaimer at the end about the 40mp sensors. Thank you! I've got an XH2 and I was considering the two cheaper options. Guess I'll save up for the 70-300. Glad I'm not in a rush :) Thank you!

Interesting video Steve. I suppose your choice of lens depends on your “starting point”! My first DSLR camera was a 550D (which I still own). It came with a low budget short zoom (up to 55mm) but didn’t get any use at all as I soon purchased a Tamron 18 - 270 zoom….what a brilliant lens that is (still own that too!). I own a few low cost lenses, including the “nifty 50”😂. I then moved on to a Ricoh GRii for some “Street Photography”…a lovely little discreet camera. I later picked up a retro 40D for 50 quid. More recently I had been watching a few Fuji related videos and was drawn to an X-T1 in outstanding condition at a reasonable price…but then came the quest for some of their lenses!! To start with I went for a 55mm 7Artisan and a 23mm TTartisan. I then added a 12mm Samyang. The big “gap” for me was that I did not own a single weather sealed (or resistant!) lens of any brand! Not good for users shooting in our lovely British weather!! In the last couple of months I picked up a 35mm f2 WR and today, took delivery of a Fuji 16mm 1.4 WR (with square hood☺️). I’ve really got to stop now as my wife has no idea how much my hobby is costing, but only when I get my hands on a Fuji zoom. Since I’ve already got my primes, my choice will likely be an XF 16 - 80 f4 WR, as I anticipate using this for Street Photography in poor weather conditions when I can’t use the Tamron.….not quite as long in reach as the Fuji 135 but great reviews. Have you done a review on that lens Steve?

Super helpful. The only thing is it will not allow the pre-shots on electronic shutter.

The wieght of the 70-300 really makes me want tonset aside my sigma 100-400 and add this to my bag

Hello Dear Steve. Firstly ı really love your videos they are simple and honest 🙏🏻I would like to ask you do you still recommend this lens. I just got Fuji xs-20 with kit lens 15-45. I really love it. I also wanted to take bird pictures and other animals also from a distance and Also landscape I’m interested. Do you recommend it for this with xs-20

My new kit and love it Fuji XT30II + Fuji 16-80 and a couple ND filters + SIRUI AM-254 Carbon Fiber Camera Tripod, 47". Very happy and my shoulders appreciates after so many miles walking I'm back to the Fuji since I never sold a couple lens, I kept 100-400mm and 10-24 mm, Just got the 16-80 and XT30II because I don't want to spend a lot money for now but will rent XT5 first and compared the files to my XT30II. I just sold my A9, sold 200-600 nice lens but to heavy but I still have A7RIIIA but soon will go also. Needed a lighter system when I travel, I do hike a lot and after 3 to 4 miles it's heavy with my sony.

I've had a couple of XT-5's for events and concert photography, but decided although a great camera it's become more of a pain for me. When you're taking circa 800 + plus images per shoot the file size has become a pain, not to mention that buffer it's awful. The eye autofocus is still pretty rubbish, skipping from one person to another, pretty unusable. I also knew of the lack of grip but that also has become a bug bear as the ergonomics are not great. It's a great camera depending on what you're shooting and using it for, unfortunately it's not the tool for me.

I moved from Fuji to full frame Sony and this is the lens I miss the most! - I bought a Tamron 70-300mm which comes close in weight, but it's much longer in length and has no stabilisation at all which makes it unusable handheld. What would you say is the closest available alternative for Sony FE with good in lens stabilisation?

Hi Steve thanks for your excellent informative tips for birds in flight etc. I now have the Fuji X-T5 which also has Subject Detection Birds etc and Face/Eye detection. Do you think these settings should be on or off combined with the settings you suggested originally? Much appreciated. Gary.

Great advice and a great note to self, as I've been guilty of keeping my ISO as long as I can remember coming from a landscape photography background. It's just quite recently that I started to use higher ISO settings since I got my X-H2S. And it's such a relief.

I have the xf 100-400 mm + xf 1.4X wf teleconverter for about 3 years. I've rarely taken it on my trips because it's too heavy and too big. Now I have decided to buy the XF 70-300 mm and ditch the 100-400 mm. I hope I will be happier with it. I will definitely keep the teleconverter. Baba from Austria.

Am in same dilemma, having shoulder issues. My big FF camera & lens weighs over 2kg. Looked at M4/3 options, around 1700gr, then compare old Xt2 with 70-300+ 1.4tc, 1227gr. Interesting. Images hold up well with latter lens. Now wondering whether need newer Xt model but don’t like Xt5 due to noise & q menu. Hope the tendonitis eases soon, look after yourself and thanks for this video

I had two xt3 cameras so changed one of those for the xt5. Must say that the xt3 feels more solid in my hand.

I've been watching Fuji gear reviews thinking of going back to this system after I sold X-T2 and lenses a few years ago. Thanks for reminding me how shitty the IQ is, foliage looks like a one huge poop smudge, I'll stick to my current gear.

Thanks for the info and test. I've just bought a X T5 and it came with the XF 18mm TO 55mm. Was looking at the55mm to 200mm. But think I'll get the 70mm to 300mm now. Thanks for the review.

Great review Steve. I’ve owned the 100-400, 55-200mm and immediately sold them when I got the amazing 70-300 which surpasses these other two lenses in all sorts of ways. I particularly like its portability and its lovely bokeh which is amazing considering it’s f5.6. Get the -xt5 and crop like crazy for super long shots!!

Had tons of Nikon, Canon and Fuji lenses. Now, the Fuji 18-135 is my only lens. Great for landscapes, portraits and some wildlife, including macro. Great sharpness. Not so good for astro or bird photography. But then again, no need to change lenses, sensor clean. That`s it. Simple, light, easy.

Bought mine for travel ..no complaints

Hugh Brownstone, in a recent video about a Fuji camera, spent half of his video to "ask" Fuji to stop all this "evolution". To my opinion all this is consumerism. Nothing more.

70-300 it’s one of the best lens I ever had , it’s unbelievable good also for portrait and sports . It’s so sharp , crisp , nice bokeh even if the aperture is high ! It’s really amazing . I have the 18-55 , 56 prime , and 70-300

Removing distractions is simply amazing - the 'add' feature is a bit of a gimmick which I probably won't use much.

I would also add health insurance cost. If I travel to unsafe destinations and photograph sports which represent a danger to my wellbeing, I'd definitely increase my profit margin.

Hi Steve Happy New Year I've got the X-S10 and was wondering if it was worth upgrading to the X-T5. I shoot mostly bird and wildlife with some landscape thrown in?

The 50-230mm is outstanding value and the difference between it and the 70-300 is far less than the price suggests- owning both and shooting in sunlight at f8 negligible difference

Steve, really enjoyed this video, thank you. Have got a Fujifilm XS 10 which came with a 15-45 lens but I think I will invest in a 18-135 because, as you say, it will be multi purpose. I love landscape photography but like a bit of nature stuff too, is it ok for birds etc too? Thanks again

Hi Steve, I hope you will fully recover from the tendinitis conditions soon! Thanks for this review. I got bot the 70-300mm and the 100-400mm, mainly for surf photography. Not only does the extra reach matter in my case but the focus accuracy with the 100-400mm is really amazing. I hardly miss a shot even when I have to quickly zoom in or out, which is a well documented problem with the 70-300mm. For occasional sports photographers the 100-400mm might still be the best Fuji option as you can get used copies for 900-1000€. This actually made me decide to go with the Fuji lens as opposed to the new Sigma or Tamron options.

Thanks for the video. I know that you mentioned that the 50-230 MK1 does not have OIS, though the MK II does and apparently that made some slight enhancements to the glass?

Having invested in the GFX system, and the XT5, Ill tell you Fujifilm needs to really invest in new sensor tech. The images have ZERO punch. not sharp at all. My 10 year old A7r2 blows away my GFX 100s with the 100 F2. I get it that Fuji people love the film sims, but the sharpness and detail is awful. The sensors are 10+ years old.

70-300 on XT5 & sigma 18-50 f2.8 on Xpro
