It's always a good day when Nuclear Throne gets the recognition it deserves. You perfectly summarised why this game is so special. It's so simple but also extremely hard with deeper depths than most triple A games. Truly one of Vlambeer's greatest works.
Roguelikes are MY. GAMES. I have a serious issue with coming back and completing long term games, Elden Ring and Halo Infinite to give a couple examples, but roguelikes just always keep me invested! EtG's huge arsenal and amount of secrets, RoR2's constantly evolving runs and character selection, e.t.c. is why I have over 600 hours in all of the roguelikes I have
I absolutely love how roguelikes are trending towards the ending being “only the beginning.” Their endless replayability is what hooks most players, so offering more than double the content after initial completion is just so fitting and makes them an awesome ride whether it’s your first or millionth time playing.
I'm late to this video but I haven't seen anyone talk about this one: My favorite roguelike is HyperRogue. Very simple turn-based combat alternating between You and the environment/enemies. It plays like chess with a check/checkmate system to prevent you from dying easily but still makes it difficult as you die with one hit. What I like about it is that there is no real leveling system, there is only really strategy. You can find magic orbs to powerup (things like walking on water tiles and phasing through walls) but they are all temporary. There is no strict goal line, just keep getting treasures and avoid checkmates. There are several randomly generated lands (72+) that keep the strategy interesting. Oh and the chessboard is hyperbolic (funky geometry)
I have almost 200 hours in Binding Of Isaac and it's DLC's. I maxed out the shop got to multiple endings and have seen almost every item because of greed mode. And yet, I only have over 100 of the 600 achievements and or items the game has to really offer. I see videos every once in a while of a place or item I've never seen in game and I'm off to play it another 30 or so hours.

Noita is a pretty great roguelike. It has a bit of a learning curve and is slower paced at times, but really atmospheric and if you wanna get invested it's got tons of content and things to discover with some nordic lore behind it

It's really awesome when I see you upload a video about one of my favorite games, and it's also really awesome when you make a video about a game I've never played before, and I end up loving it! I had quite the battle with depression back in December and January. I stopped caring about everything, including video games, which have brought so much joy to me. I was scrolling through RUclips, making myself watch something, and I ended up seeing your Halo Infinite video in my recommended. It put me in such a better headspace, and inspired me to get better, play some good games again, and get creative! Now every time I watch one of your videos, I think of how much they helped me back when I needed it the most! You're the best!

Nuclear Throne was my Introduction to the rougelike genre and it was one of the games where I genuinely wanted to get good at it, and eventually defeated captain and it was one of the most satisfying moments I’ve ever experienced in video games. And rougelikes have quickly become one of my favorite video game genres.
I'll be the annoying guy who reminds everyone that rogue is not actually the biggest inspiration for recent roguelikes but the Mystery Dungeon series is. Specifically Shiren the Wanderer, it's a pillar of strategy roguelikes. And yes most action games called roguelikes are pretty much not roguelikes (and don't call themselves roguelikes). It's fun how everyone uses this name while the devs don't, because yes it's not grid based, not turn based, not always with a heavy inventory system... So it's pretty much 2 different genre of games. Real roguelikes that are strategy turn-based dungeon crawlers and the action run-based games that are more popular now. In the end I really recommend trying Shiren The Wanderer, the last one came out on switch and pc not too long ago and is an amazing adventure.
Something interesting about Roguelikes is that you really only covered Action Roguelikes in this video. The genre has proven to work well in many other types of games like card games, strategy games, platformers, sports, multiplayer party games, sim management, tower defense, rhythm, slot machines, and even diner dash.
There really is something satisfying about a game that demands your attention but only for what is ultimately a test of dexterity. Once you got the controls and gameplay down you can let your mind drift as you please while the muscle memory does most of the work up until the rise in challenge requires you "lean in" as mentioned in the vid. I've been playing Hollow Knight, and while not a roguelike it does have that sort of gameplay where you can bang your head against a particularly difficult challenge multiple times without any of that gamer rage frustration boiling up. It's all for the sheer enjoyment/rush of wanting that dub and made painless when there's no BS cutscene or other shit to wait through before each attempt. Just straight gameplay where your fingers can actually take the lead while your mind wanders a bit until shit gets serious. Having to sit and focus your entire being on a game can become a pain quick as hell if your having to retry something over and over again while listening and seeing the same old shit each time to get to what feels like such a short period of actual gameplay in those cases. Anyway, great vid, it really does make you think about the psychology behind it a bit! Most appreciated!

I love how roguelikes let you develop your character as well as yourself as a gamer. It brings a different type of immersion when you feel like getting better not because of your gear lvl, but also because you are more experienced with mechanics. Games like "Sifu" makes you develop muscle memory to the lvl you feel like learning a new martial art. Love those games and I appreciate my favourite youtuber explored this genre.
A few of my favorites that people might want to check out: Black Paradox, NeuroVoider, Rush Rover, and Ziggurat 2. Some of these might get overlooked for various reasons, e.g. I scrolled past Rush Rover for ages, thinking it was just more shovelware on PSN (apologies to the thumbnail artist!). Not sure what made me eventually buy it, but I love everything about it. There's a ton of upgrades/mods, and the feel of shots ripping through enemies is great.

As a player who has 500 hours in Enter the Gungeon, the primary reason why I keep coming back to it is that there's different stuff and different combos to get all the time. Also, indie devs usually are more consumer friendly and tend to make more polished games these days, which is another reason I love roguelites

Yea, Isaac's artstyle is a little bit of an acquired taste but it is still very well done and detailed And those 227 hours he talks about aren't even enough to scratch the surface of Isaac
Roguelike Card Games might just be my favorite genre. Slay the Spire and Monster Train are two of the most engaging, replayable games I’ve ever experienced. I have 800 hours in Slay the Spire over the last three years and still have only A20’d the Ironclad and Watcher. Game rules - there are STILL deck archetypes I haven’t explored.
I have watched a lot of RUclips video game think peices and essays and reviews, but somehow only recently stumbled onto your channel recently. And I have to say, there is something about the way you write, edit, deliver, or all the above that makes you a cut above the rest. Always stoked to see a new video from you! Keep it up! P.s. absolutely love roguelikes. You only mentioned a few, but shout out to moonlighter, curse of the dead gods, and slay the spire (if you count that)
I highly recommend Noita if you havne't already tried it. It's best with a good computer but I somehow beat it on a toaster after about 200 hours of not knowing what I was doing. The main draw of Noita is that you find wands and spells to put in the wands, and your goal is to understand the magic system to string together spells in a really overpowered combination (and inevitably die in 1-hit from contact with some potion or something). Lots of content and very difficult, and tons to explore.
Truly the best explanation for roguelikes, my interpretation is that roguelikes is like dark souls, but in arcade form. A game that forces you to adapt and learn the randomized enemies and environment is the like a new way to experience an arcade-style game. It gives endless gameplay replayability while also giving your brain a new mental workout for every run. Until you mastered it and can finally watch podcasts or videos in the background. Only problem is the patience and perseverance needed for more of the hardcore roguelike type of games, but all the more reason for you to master the game or waste your time getting better each run, and that's when the gameplay loop kicks in.
imo . The modern pillars of Roguelikes are : -Enter the Gungeon: being the most refined . (if you are a new developer in the genre . you must play ETG to see how they did it right) -Hades: the best game for new people in the genre . as also having great story. -Risk of Rain 2: One of the best example of 2d game converted to 3d in this genre . Honorable mentions : Going Under - Loop Hero - SYNTHETIK 1&2 - Bad North - The Swords of Dittio . etc....

One of my favorite rogue-likes/lites is this little indie game called Colt Canyon. In many respects it is like enter the gungeon but with a much more minimalist style art style, western theme, much more brutal and quick combat, and an interesting stealth mechanic. Definitely worth the few bucks it costs if you like rogue likes and it is one of the few I can actually play a lot without getting bored or frustrated.
Man I love this channel, Jack, you're simply a RUclips hidden gem. What I wanted to mention too, is that one of the hardest rogue-like games I've played was a game inside a game, called Demontower inside a lil cutesy (not so cute) indie called Night In The Woods. Finishing the mini-game with it's secret ending is required for the platinum of Night In The Woods and oh boy it doesn't forgive; it was strangely super well put together, but man it was intense. If you ever need a challenge, try that, also Night In The Woods is a fantastic title and it actually teaches you lots of things!
Roguelikes are 100% my favorite type of game hands down, and I love em in all forms. My favorite is Spelunky 2 (still chipping away at CO), but I absolutely love Slay the Spire, Gungeon, Into the Breach, Hades etc. Really just a sucker for the genre as a whole, no matter what else it may be mixed with. Love the video, happy so many people share my passion for these games!
Rogue likes are by far my favorite genre. Simple concept, but so addicting that you have to do just one more run. Next thing you know you’ve spent way more time playing than you ever expected to
Roguelikes/lites seems to represent the majority of games in my library. I was kind of in denial about liking them but gradually it seems like they took over my collection. I guess it's mostly because I don't have time to really dump into a really long single storyline, but it's easy to kill half an hour with something like Hades.
Risk of rain 2 was my gate to Roguelikes. I knew I was addicted when one of my monsoon runs lasted 5 hours and I only stopped because I was starting to get headaches from all the flashing projectiles lol.
my favorite rougelike is the bozak horde dlc from dl1. its a series of parkour, combat, race against time trials. and its multiplayer 4 player co-op is great
Yep definitely one of my favourite genres, they're just so mindlessly fun. To me they're like the new version of arcade games except not so limited to a singular experience, because all the characters you can play as and all the abilities you can unlock shape each run so much. Risk of Rain 2 is my favourite so far, that game is just insane. The way you can stack all the upgrades almost endlessly is amazing, I don't think I've ever played a game that got quite as crazy. You can be so powerful to the point where firing a single shot creates this massive chain reaction of other effects that kills everything on the map. But at the same time enemies endlessly scale with you so it will eventually get to a point where your God status can be wiped away in an instant when you get far too overconfident. AND THEN THERE'S MORE since you get those modifiers to customize each run even more, such as doubling the enemy count, making enemies get random upgrades each round(which can be ANY upgrade, even the legendary stuff) to having a doppleganger of you spawn in every so often to attack you. Incredible game.
I have grown up playing Binding of Isaac Rebirth and that game is so fun for me that I played it from the beginning 5 times and still had fun. Also, Cult of the Lamb came out recently and it's so fun to play that I spent 6 hours playing it first time I launched it. However, although it's easy to make a game in this genre it's also easy to make it boring by not introducing anything new
Currently playing Rogue Legacy 2 after beating the first one, and just having a blast. The progression loop is highly addictive. That's what makes the good roguelikes so good, is that they constantly make you say "one more run" even when you keep dying.
Hell,there is even more to rougelikes,there are rougelites,which some kind of progression system,the rougelike deckbuilder genre has been really rising up in popularity,also having a ton of variety in gameplay and visuals,there is just a lot to the genre you can enjoy and you can make a channel just about those types of games.
I can't tell you how much did I feel like im a 7th grader again when all I did the last summer for college break is play the game 10 Hours a day. I love EVERYTHING about hades.
I have to thank you Jack. I like roguelikes and saw Nuclear Throne a while back. I neglected it because I expected it to be too basic and not substantial enough compared to other roguelikes I've played. However after watching this I bought Nuclear Throne and now it's my 4th favorite behind Gungeon, Spelunky 2, and Streets of Rogue. Really a quality game that deserves more attention.
Try caves of qud… one of the most difficult and complex games I’ve ever played. Endless build variety, intense lore if you want to get into it, mountains of loot and enemies. Just all around the best traditional rougelike I’ve ever played. Took me almost 300 hours to complete a full run for the first time and the game isn’t even finished yet lol

Risk of rain 2 has been this experience for me, it’s nice to throw on a podcast and just go for a few loops.
I have watched a lot of RUclips video game think peices and essays and reviews, but somehow only recently stumbled onto your channel recently. And I have to say, there is something about the way you write, edit, deliver, or all the above that makes you a cut above the rest. Always stoked to see a new video from you! Keep it up!
P.s. absolutely love roguelikes. You only mentioned a few, but shout out to moonlighter, curse of the dead gods, and slay the spire (if you count that)

the amount of care and quality that is put into these videos is amazing
I highly recommend Noita if you havne't already tried it. It's best with a good computer but I somehow beat it on a toaster after about 200 hours of not knowing what I was doing.
The main draw of Noita is that you find wands and spells to put in the wands, and your goal is to understand the magic system to string together spells in a really overpowered combination (and inevitably die in 1-hit from contact with some potion or something). Lots of content and very difficult, and tons to explore.

Truly the best explanation for roguelikes, my interpretation is that roguelikes is like dark souls, but in arcade form.
A game that forces you to adapt and learn the randomized enemies and environment is the like a new way to experience an arcade-style game. It gives endless gameplay replayability while also giving your brain a new mental workout for every run. Until you mastered it and can finally watch podcasts or videos in the background.
Only problem is the patience and perseverance needed for more of the hardcore roguelike type of games, but all the more reason for you to master the game or waste your time getting better each run, and that's when the gameplay loop kicks in.
imo . The modern pillars of Roguelikes are :
-Enter the Gungeon: being the most refined . (if you are a new developer in the genre . you must play ETG to see how they did it right)
-Hades: the best game for new people in the genre . as also having great story.
-Risk of Rain 2: One of the best example of 2d game converted to 3d in this genre .
Honorable mentions : Going Under - Loop Hero - SYNTHETIK 1&2 - Bad North - The Swords of Dittio . etc....

One of my favorite rogue-likes/lites is this little indie game called Colt Canyon. In many respects it is like enter the gungeon but with a much more minimalist style art style, western theme, much more brutal and quick combat, and an interesting stealth mechanic. Definitely worth the few bucks it costs if you like rogue likes and it is one of the few I can actually play a lot without getting bored or frustrated.
Man I love this channel, Jack, you're simply a RUclips hidden gem.
What I wanted to mention too, is that one of the hardest rogue-like games I've played was a game inside a game, called Demontower inside a lil cutesy (not so cute) indie called Night In The Woods. Finishing the mini-game with it's secret ending is required for the platinum of Night In The Woods and oh boy it doesn't forgive; it was strangely super well put together, but man it was intense. If you ever need a challenge, try that, also Night In The Woods is a fantastic title and it actually teaches you lots of things!
Roguelikes are 100% my favorite type of game hands down, and I love em in all forms. My favorite is Spelunky 2 (still chipping away at CO), but I absolutely love Slay the Spire, Gungeon, Into the Breach, Hades etc. Really just a sucker for the genre as a whole, no matter what else it may be mixed with. Love the video, happy so many people share my passion for these games!
I played Hades because of the story!-I loved the surprise when I noticed that the story can even change the game loop.

Rogue likes are by far my favorite genre. Simple concept, but so addicting that you have to do just one more run. Next thing you know you’ve spent way more time playing than you ever expected to

Roguelikes/lites seems to represent the majority of games in my library. I was kind of in denial about liking them but gradually it seems like they took over my collection. I guess it's mostly because I don't have time to really dump into a really long single storyline, but it's easy to kill half an hour with something like Hades.
I feel like rougelikes in many ways are a more modern incarnation of arcade design philosophy.
Risk of rain 2 was my gate to Roguelikes. I knew I was addicted when one of my monsoon runs lasted 5 hours and I only stopped because I was starting to get headaches from all the flashing projectiles lol.
my favorite rougelike is the bozak horde dlc from dl1. its a series of parkour, combat, race against time trials. and its multiplayer 4 player co-op is great

Yep definitely one of my favourite genres, they're just so mindlessly fun. To me they're like the new version of arcade games except not so limited to a singular experience, because all the characters you can play as and all the abilities you can unlock shape each run so much.
Risk of Rain 2 is my favourite so far, that game is just insane. The way you can stack all the upgrades almost endlessly is amazing, I don't think I've ever played a game that got quite as crazy. You can be so powerful to the point where firing a single shot creates this massive chain reaction of other effects that kills everything on the map.
But at the same time enemies endlessly scale with you so it will eventually get to a point where your God status can be wiped away in an instant when you get far too overconfident.
AND THEN THERE'S MORE since you get those modifiers to customize each run even more, such as doubling the enemy count, making enemies get random upgrades each round(which can be ANY upgrade, even the legendary stuff) to having a doppleganger of you spawn in every so often to attack you.
Incredible game.

I have grown up playing Binding of Isaac Rebirth and that game is so fun for me that I played it from the beginning 5 times and still had fun. Also, Cult of the Lamb came out recently and it's so fun to play that I spent 6 hours playing it first time I launched it. However, although it's easy to make a game in this genre it's also easy to make it boring by not introducing anything new

Currently playing Rogue Legacy 2 after beating the first one, and just having a blast. The progression loop is highly addictive. That's what makes the good roguelikes so good, is that they constantly make you say "one more run" even when you keep dying.
I literally played Ancient Domains of Mystery (classic version) for 20 years. When I beat it, I got a tattoo and am never touching it again.

Hell,there is even more to rougelikes,there are rougelites,which some kind of progression system,the rougelike deckbuilder genre has been really rising up in popularity,also having a ton of variety in gameplay and visuals,there is just a lot to the genre you can enjoy and you can make a channel just about those types of games.
nuclear throne was one of the first games i have ever bought and i still play it when I'm at school or when I'm bored.

I have to thank you Jack. I like roguelikes and saw Nuclear Throne a while back. I neglected it because I expected it to be too basic and not substantial enough compared to other roguelikes I've played. However after watching this I bought Nuclear Throne and now it's my 4th favorite behind Gungeon, Spelunky 2, and Streets of Rogue. Really a quality game that deserves more attention.
Try caves of qud… one of the most difficult and complex games I’ve ever played. Endless build variety, intense lore if you want to get into it, mountains of loot and enemies. Just all around the best traditional rougelike I’ve ever played. Took me almost 300 hours to complete a full run for the first time and the game isn’t even finished yet lol
