I haven't put this into practice, but I also heard that a good way to structure the midpoint is to juxtapose it against the climax. If your book will end in a defeat, then you want the midpoint to be a false victory. So your characters get a small taste of victory before they ultimately fail. But if the story will end in a victory, then you want your midpoint to be the false defeat so that your characters experience those true lows which will make the victory at the end more satisfying.

Interesting! I haven’t heard of that one but that does make sense to me? Though I feel like characters win at the end in so many books 🤔but I guess maybe that’s why midpoints are often tragic haha

Thank you so much for this video, I feel much clearer on the midpoint after hearing you talk about it. I've been having trouble with my plotting and I think this helped!

I loved this video so much! It's the so helpful that you talk about these beats through *your own filter* and what you change or remove. I'm looking forward to the next video, will be grabbing my popcorn! 😄

So happy you enjoyed it! And yeah I figured this was kind of the best way to present this because I really don’t always follow the rules haha and honestly the save the cat authors have a lot of their own videos explaining the strict structure, so I didn’t want to just do that again

19:38 I agree with you and have been writing like that, as well!

I think it’s a good method! And I do wonder if they meant it in a different way because it seems like that would be the ideal way to do it???

Love this series! I've just started re-reading "Save The Cat Writes A Novel" in preparation of drafting and the Midpoint is one of my favorite beats.

Thank you! And the midpoint is really fun so I get why it would be a fav beat for you. I do love the drama of it

Thank you for creating this series, Liselle! I came across your channel/this series after reading Save the Cat! Writes a Novel, imposing some much-needed structure on my pantser approach to writing, and realizing I still had questions. I saw the Debate video first, then watched the series in order plus a handful of your other videos, all in two days. Your content is excellent: informative, example-based, and so kind and patient. Can’t wait for the next video in July!

So helpful! You should check out screenwriter Michael Arndt's video on writing toy story 3's midpoint, it's a great example of what you're talking about.
