For the new turners out there - this is more of a Master Class than a how-to for new turners. Mr. Raffan is so skilled that he makes difficult (and catch-worthy) cuts look easy; Those shearing and pull-cuts with the spindle gouge on the outside of the bowl are (and I know from experience) very difficult to emulate. The man is amazing, but there are less demanding - less "fast and furious" - approaches to bowl-turning. (And he knew that bowl was perfect before he went to the bandsaw - he's that good. Wish I was.) As the youngsters say - Respect.
I always get a joint line when I glue the halves back together to give as a gift to friends. No one has said anything yet, but I fear it's just a matter of time. Enjoyed the videos!
The description should read - 'Richard Raffan wraps up his cherry bowl project with tips on final shaping, a natural beeswax finish, and then cuts it in HALF!'
question? when setting up the tool rest, is it level with the middle of the work or in the middle with the tool on it? That's the best way to describe my question sorry if its not clear :|
ok, so I was thinking this video is awesome right up until the point he went to the band saw, then I was screaming no don't do it no! That is a bowl I probably could never ever do and it hurt watching him cut it.
Thank you so much! So much fun watching you turn. Sharp tools! Steady sure grip! Hands are moving to the next step before the eye. I learned more in two minutes than years of making mistakes! By the way I still have all my fingers. I subscribed!
i like to rewatch this pair of videos...(but, I stop before you cut it! hurts too much to watch!) :-) great presentation. us newbies appreciate generosity of experienced woodworkers like yourself.
He truly is a master in wood turning, cutting it in half gives him the insight of the level his craftsmanship is at when he corrects his own mistakes by analytics reviews based on his pass work
The process was so beautiful, reminded me of my woodshop days at high School. The last part of cutting that beautiful bowl in half just bothered me! But it was necessary to see the quality, I know...
My shop teacher hasn’t taught us how to use the lathe yet, but I really want to make a bowl (and by that I mean my mom is begging me to) But thanks ma dude.
Hello Richard. I have made some spoons with a variety of wood including Cherry. I usually sand them ,wet them , sun dry them three times till they are nice and smooth. However I ground a block of Cherry into a shallow bowl, sanded it wet it and sun dried it and got a few cracks at one end. Any idea how this happened. as it has not happened before with any other wood spoons I have done.
Nice video. Shame though that it was more about sanding than hollowing out the bowl. Bevel placement, flute angle, and presenting your tool to the bowl properly is barely touched on. Thought this was an educational video.
"This bowl will outlast us", cuts it in half! 🤣🤣🤣 maybe not!!!

Simple but what a beautiful bowl.
I have seen many Bowl Turners and this Master puts them all to shame. Look no further for perfection cuz you've found it in this demonstration.
The cut in half part really painful to watch..
I love working with a lathe, but it seems like you waste sooooo much wood. Definitely requires shop cleaning afterwards as well.
When he cut that bowl in half I was like O.O noooooo!!!!!!
Anyone else feel their stomach drop when the bowl was cut in two? (Noooooo…).
Wonderful skill. Thank you for the demo.
The David Attenborough of lathes.

I'd need to see a photo of the splits, but most woods are subject to some splitting as they season.
That man just cut that bowl in half...
what is the rpm that you turned this bowl
As fast as a potter. Bravo.
What ... you cut it in half man? :-)
