In this video, I present 10 things we can do to prepare for the oral defense of a (doctoral) thesis / dissertation. I talk about how to deal with nervousness, how to best answer questions that we know the answers to, and how to tackle those questions to which we have no answers. I also share a few additional thoughts or reflections on the practice or oral defenses. You may agree or disagree, these are just my personal views, for the present time.

Thank you! It's my first time to defense a thesis.
In my fifty-plus years as a university professor, I have supervised and served as a committee member for hundreds of theses and dissertations. I never considered myself to be an "opponent" of the student at a defense and I believe this to be a misrepresentation of the faculty role. An examination is not a battle between the professor and the student. It should be an encounter that improves understanding -- not a contest to determine a winner and a loser.
😋Hi Frederic, thanks for the comment! And let me point out to the viewers that the 'opponent PhD defense format' and the 'examiner defense format' differ in some key aspects. The 'opponent format' is specifically set up as a debate in which the professors on the panel essentially function as opponents to the PhD candidate and challenge the candidate on different aspects of the research / dissertation. In this format, protocols would typically require that the PhD candidate addresses the professor as 'highly learned opponent' and engage in debate with these opponents during the defense. The opponents on the panel would generally consist of internal opponents (from within the university) and external opponents (from other universities, similar to external assessors). This format may sound a bit more confrontational because the opponents are indeed there to challenge. But I would not say that it is not set up to determine winners and losers though. 👍🏼

Thanks a lot for putting together these tips. I successfully defended my licentiate thesis early this week and your 10 tips and 100 sample questions were extremely helpful in preparing me for the discussion with my "Opponent", the examiner, and the general audience who were part of the seminar. I found the categorization into 3 types of questions super helpful and it helped build my confidence which shone through during the whole seminar!

(you're probably not surprised about me adding a little 'but' to your story), I tend to add a tip 0 that says: forget all the tips above and enjoy your defense! In fact, that might be the most effective attack strategy in your defense. You probably even will be able to use the force of improvisation when you enjoy your dissertation defense.

I will have my thesis defense in one week. Thank for your helpful suggestion and encourage.
I am prepping for an defense and have been really anxious. One of my examiners seemed ot have a massive chip on her shoulder as I think she viewed some of my content as her wheelhouse and therefore she alone is the authority. She made comments that were callous and made little sense in terms of my submission, to either my supervisor, the other examiner, myself or an editor i hired to proofread my work. I have no clue then how she will be when face to face and I'm in the hot seat. This helped, so thank you. Especially the end...lol. I'll enjoy it, and take all questions in my stride. Not try, will. 😃

I'll be right back tomorrow for my comment here, however, I would like to say to my group mates we acknowledge that we certainly pass our thesis, I'm just listening to the whole tips and it's very useful, it made me motivated and excited, this is not about we pass or not the genuine process is that we seize the moment and enjoy it that's my achievement without anger and regret this is about how we face the scenarios most importantly how we stood for the seriousness and panic. There is something I often wondered. What if someone doesn't pass their defense? Do they get time to go back and do what they need to do in order to try again? Seems strange that after that many years if you get tripped up that your hopes and dreams of a doctorate are suddenly slashed. Honestly that is a fear I have if I were to go back. I finished my masters in 2000 so being out of school for nearly 20 yrs would be rough as well as academia has changed somewhat (especially in regards to technology) since the late 1990s
To the best of my knowledge, in case of failure, which is rare, the candidate would need to Revise and Resubmit. The R&R would likely involve substantial work on the thesis, otherwise, the candidate would not have failed the defense. It would probably delay the graduation quite a bit. However, when the R&R is considered adequate, then one can graduate and celebrate! As the saying goes -- Failure is not a permanent condition.
