In my fifty-plus years as a university professor, I have supervised and served as a committee member for hundreds of theses and dissertations. I never considered myself to be an "opponent" of the student at a defense and I believe this to be a misrepresentation of the faculty role. An examination is not a battle between the professor and the student. It should be an encounter that improves understanding -- not a contest to determine a winner and a loser.

The 'opponent format' is specifically set up as a debate in which the professors on the panel essentially function as opponents to the PhD candidate and challenge the candidate on different aspects of the research / dissertation. In this format, protocols would typically require that the PhD candidate addresses the professor as 'highly learned opponent' and engage in debate with these opponents during the defense. The opponents on the panel would generally consist of internal opponents (from within the university) and external opponents (from other universities, similar to external assessors). This format may sound a bit more confrontational because the opponents are indeed there to challenge. But I would not say that it is not set up to determine winners and losers though. 👍🏼

I am prepping for an defense and have been really anxious. One of my examiners seemed ot have a massive chip on her shoulder as I think she viewed some of my content as her wheelhouse and therefore she alone is the authority. She made comments that were callous and made little sense in terms of my submission, to either my supervisor, the other examiner, myself or an editor i hired to proofread my work. I have no clue then how she will be when face to face and I'm in the hot seat. This helped, so thank you. Especially the end...lol. I'll enjoy it, and take all questions in my stride. Not try, will. 😃
