African’s greatest drummer ever, has left the room. He is with the greats still doing big things, and for that and more, his music will live on. With Hugh Masakela, Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango and a few more, their music is the light. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Tony is not just one of the worls's greatest drummers, he is also a polite and gentle person! Ginger Baker describes in his book, "Hellraiser", how Tony took care for him when he came to live in Nigeria. Great man! Without him Afro Beat would never been created!
I'm a white guy who "discovered" Tony Allen(I hope I'm not a douchebag...ask my ex-wife). But I totally agree about TOny's drumming. It defies so many things...it defies categories....It isn't funk necessarily...it has some jazz influence(it really reminds me of some of the great stuff Jack Dejohnette played with Miles Davis in the lost quintet..same greasy improv style of playing), It defies quantification...its so personal too. Its so greasy. His touch is unbelievable! So light!
As a drummer of 40 years I’ve always been amazed by people who think what we do is easy and they can just sit at the kit and have a go. It takes a lifetime to internalize rhythm and dynamics.

Great drummer.
You can tell he thinks Tim Jonze is a pretentious Wayne Kerr!

RIP Tony, Great musician and a big inspiration!
his snare is almost perfect...when a drummer barely hits the head and it sings everything is balanced.
RIP, you will never been forgotten. What You have created will live on forever and keep on inspiring people.
Respect..Tony..thank you for your presence here on Earth.we love you!
the video editing in this piece sucks...he gets 2 grooving and u cut 2 the other camera and u miss the beat..tony is badd tho!
up there with Bonzo! A true special talent, nothing micky mouse about this King of the Drums!!!
He actually let him on his set.. nice...
Rest in peace greatest drummer and innovator of Africa.
I think he was just doing the best he could to pass on his technique/style in the English language. I don't think he sounded conceited.
