i love how you use the colours in plants you find around you to alter the background, it's such a nice touch using natural colours instead of a premade backdrop c:
I’ve said in another video: “never change your style, cadence, or anything. These series are spectacular, relaxing, and eye opening of the nature right in our back yard.
Truly fabulous photographs as ever Alexis, you've really mastered the skills of macro photography in the field. I actually think that you've progressed to achieve world class images in this genre, you should put an exhibition together if you can. Enjoy Canada, Cheers, Robert.
Astonishing images, you make it look so simple (which I know isn’t the case at all, got to find the damn things for a start!). Images aside l love the peaceful ambience of your videos, along with your measured & calm manner they make for must see viewing….outstanding 👍👏👏👏👏
I have no idea how you get the insects to stay that still, but good job. Im pretty hyped to get an insect in focus. Meanwhile, you're like, " and heres a beetle giving the peace sign while sitting on its toilet, and i hope you like it." Bfffffferrttttt.. [ microscope image of a beetle taking a dump]
I'm always deeply impressed that you can get such deep macro focus stacks hand-held with this manual focus lens. Also I'm impressed that your flash can give such long bursts of flash without blacking out on some frames in the middle!
Nice video again! But when I get close to a Dragonfly, he is gone, to to touch the leaf is for me totally impossible also in the early morning!!!! How can you manage that? And when you lower the shuttterspeed when flashing (to 1/60 or so) your background will light up enormously!!!! Have a nice Holliday!!!
What kind of temperatures do you get overnight? In my experience dragonflies and damselflies usually won't be this still in the morning unless it's been under around 16 degrees.. I'm aware of the shutter speed technique (and have mentioned it in several videos), it wouldn't have made much difference here though since it was still fairly dark and you need quite a bit of ambient light for that to have a big effect.
mate. please please upload at least 1440p 😢 so much great content but not everybody watch on their phones but on a big 4k monitor. you are of course welcome to up that to 4k but no pressure. bought a new lens today just because your channel woke my interest for photography again. cheers
I would love to upload in higher resolution and my camera can do it, but I currently edit everything on a laptop which isn't powerful enough to deal with 4k files, so I'm limited to 1080p for now. As soon as I upgrade I will definitely upload in 4k though :)
I think your videos are very nice. Your soft voice makes them relaxing. The various shots are unique and interesting. I find the videos inspiring for me to get out more. Right now, it is near 100º for me so I’m mostly stuck inside. I’m curious what stacking software you use. I use Helicon Focus. Since you do a lot of hand held stacks, do you try and cull your images before stacking to get them in order or do you just trust the software to figure things out?
Thanks so much! I use Zerene Stacker, but Helicon is great as well. My method for handheld stacking is to move forward slowly in one motion while shooting a burst, so the frames are already in the correct order. I rarely cull images before stacking, other than sometimes removing frames off the front and back or the stack to not "overstack" and have the image end up looking flat.
Enjoyable vid. Impressive pics. Great the way you use “field expedient” backgrounds for color contrast - you could use a third hand😊. Black backgrounds also work. Did you ever ID the first camo beetle-like insect? Frog stole the scene😊. You sound a bit nasal - hope you are better by now (jet lag, perhaps??). Cheers!
Maybe I missed this in the video, can you share your flash and camera settings? I have a GODOX V1 and I think one limitation is the flash recharge time but am curious if you are using HSS, and what your other settings are.
wow what a job you do. Your pictures are out of this world!! I have a nikon Z6 and a Z 105mm 2.8 macro lens. I would like to know what is your flash and diffuser equipment and the light in the diffuser. Thank you and keep up the good work! Benoit from Quebec.
Thank you! I always put the equipment I use in the caption of each video, I have the Godox v860iii flash (which has a built in focusing light) and the Cygnustech diffuser
Welcome to NS! I always thought the insects were so much more attractive in YT videos by yourself and others taken elsewhere in the world. Thanks for showing the local insects can be just as photogenic... Now I just need more practise! Just wondering how early in the day are you out and have you first doused yourself in bug spray?
Thanks so much! I was out just before 6 here, no point trying to film a video before sunrise😅 The mosquitoes haven't been too bad for me, though I imagine earlier in the season bug spray would be a must for morning macro walks here.
Question - when you shoot a 67 image stack of the striped fishing spider, are you moving the focus ring? Or, are you moving in or out? to get all of the needed frames for the stack? I would love to see you do a video of your processing techniques.
I almost always move the camera forward to change focus during a stack, just because I'm able to get more consistent results that way. A post processing video is definitely on my list, hopefully in the next couple of months.
Rite Nature Dude, I love your pictures always so sharp and interesting subjects! I am just trying macro for the first time, Lumix G3 and extension tubes with a 14-42 and a 45-200 not great results but still trying, I will invest in a good macro lens and a flash when money allows! What software are you using to stack? Stay safe n well Dude. TFS, GB :)
Fantastic shots and really nice video. Thanks! I have seen that you are using the x-h2. Do you use this camera for other subjects that don't require a macro setup? If so, how have you found the autofocus?
Thank you! I actually have never used the autofocus on my X-H2 since I only have manual focus macro lenses, I'm quite curious as well once I eventually get an autofocus lens
First of all great video and pictures! i have a question, do you use the camera's focus bracketing feature for stacked images or do you use burst? and if you use burst how do you move the focus?, slight camera movement? Thank you
I don't use focus bracketing as it only works with autofocus lenses, so I have to stack manually shooting in burst mode. To change focus I just move the camera slowly forward.
Trading places! I live in Canada normally but ironically have just arrived in Berlin, visiting my daughter. I have brought my macro lens with me but keeping my gear light I have not brought a flash.

Fantastic and amazing, as always!
Very informative and super chill. The Bob Ross of Macro, but without the hair.
your awesome

Thank you for a wonderful video. You are doing great. I hope to be able to take on what you have shown me, keep the videos coming we truly enjoy them
you're a talented photographer sharing good information... thank you.

The best photos and presentation. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your kind capture of the little creatures round about. Enjoy your stay in Canada.🕷🐌🐛🦗

Highly appreciated your latest video on macro photography, Alexis.
Greetings from Brandenburg to Nova Scotia.
You should get a gold medal at the photographer's Olympics.
I find your voice so soothing thank you.
Always enjoy your videos, thanks!
Exceptional work.
Excellent!
Very nice , top !!!
Another nice one Alexis! You make macro and stacking look like a breeze! Good luck with more "Canadian Bugs!" 🙂
excellent as always!
Amazing !! I would like to know whats your camera and macro lenses please. Thanks
what's the light you have inside your flash diffuser? Great video!
Мне очень нравятся Ваши видео! Спасибо Вам! Привет из России👋😊

Glad you're able to make awesome content even on the road (near me haha). Macro has always mystified me, so i love this
Would it be possible to show us some of your favorite shots and why in a later video?
Thanks a good idea, I'll keep it in mind maybe for a winter video when there aren't too many subjects around
Watch out for the hybrid Coy-Wolves!

Hi! I am a fan of your vidéos. I Have a technical question. Why do you stack most of the Time at f5.6 instead of shooting single Shots at F11 - F18?
I think your videos are very nice. Your soft voice makes them relaxing. The various shots are unique and interesting. I find the videos inspiring for me to get out more. Right now, it is near 100º for me so I’m mostly stuck inside.

Very interesting and informative - great images - thank you. QUESTION - what are your flash settings? are you TTL or manual?
Thanks! I use manual mode on the flash between 1/32 and 1/64 power, so that the recycle time is fast enough to keep up for 15fps burst shooting.

Nova Scotia. I'm just West of there in Maine. I've often wondered about their insects. They really are the same. I'll take the Ferry there eventually.
What size is your diffuser ? Small, medium, or large ? Thanks love your videos !
I got mine before the website was up, so the size is just based on my equipment.. I guess it would be a medium but I'm really not sure.
You have two Laowa lenses. Which do you use more often and does your diffuser work on both? I know they're custom.
A super interesting presentation. Thank you.
Which flash did you use?
Thanks :) I always put my equipment in the caption of each video, I use the Godox v860iii

Hi, excellent video, very informative. What settings do you use on your flash, i.e manual, 1/16, 1/8 etc? Thank you very much.

que lente usas para realizar esas fotografias macro?
