Have you tried brass plating? You'd copper plate them as normal, but then dip the copper coated item into Sodium Hydroxide with metallic zinc pellets. Allow the item to contact the metallic zinc to zinc plate them. Then heat up the item to allow the copper and zinc to merge and turn a beautiful gold colour.
Sorry to leave a reply like this my iPad wasn’t letting me leave my own comment. I wonder if placing the panels on the silicone mat and using UV resin just a tiny amount to leave a thin layer and flash cure it. Maybe it would help if there’s any leaking or spilling out, it’s clear and you can’t see it and this would avoid any color leaking into any other area and you wouldn’t fight the tape situation if it works! Another way using the same idea, is using a paint brush paint the inside walls while holding it then sitting it down and letting it sit for a moment to let the us resin flow and fill the cracks, reinforcing where needed, this will help you use the least amount possible. I’ve there is any leaking you can simply brush on more resin and coat the whole piece. This would also protecting it from turning green if that’s something you want!
Hey Peter, maybe already been suggested before, but consider laying a thin clear layer of resin and letting it set before any color. That will let you effectively seal all the compartments and then you can confidently move on to the color. Also lets you not have to worry about sealing to the back side of the frame if trimming any flashing is acceptable. Benefit there is you can use surfaces you know resin won't adhere to and will leave an excellent finish on the clear layer.
Genius idea, like down to the exact details too. Kudos, man. I hope he tries this!! I bet it would turn out absolutely perfect, plus that way you could see the colors without the background material messing with the view. You could just put something white under it after that clear layer cures and have a perfect blank canvas!
Who lives behind a red door? In my red-doored house, a firmware engineer. While I can't see myself ever getting into the resin game, all of your videos are must-watch Peter. Entertaining and I always learn something - thanks for the work. And to Mrs. Brown for her support of the adventure!
Factor is actually really nice. The meals feel healthy, feel good quality, and taste good. My grandma is going through chemo right now and the hospital gives her these meals to take home when she goes in for chemo.
About the tape, i just found out the perfect way to do this. Use the blue paper tape, spray or coat it with isopropyl alcohol before removing it. Let it soak through the paper and it will dissolve the glue underneath.
So glad you did the red door; it looked great! I'm very fond of red front doors; they look European to my eyes, and often look great with bright-coloured flowers in the front garden of a house. My parents' home was a crisp grey with white woodwork and a scarlet door and it looked AMAZING.
Makes me think of home. In Colonial New England rich people wanting to let other rich people know they could stop at your farm/ mansion for the night would put a guilded pineapple over the front door. If you weren’t rich you couldn’t afford it. So you would paint your front door bright red. A sign of welcome. I grew up in a dark chocolate brown house with semi gloss Irish green trim and shutters. With a fire engine gloss red front door. The door she repainted every 2 years herself. So that door on your planter says a traditional WELCOME! 😁
I should have mentioned that in those days hotels, restaurants, & taverns didn’t exist out in the country. Most travelers camped out. No fun in bad weather.
In my university class, we covered wax models with the conductive paint that we melted out later. The machine we used for electroforming made a much thicker shell though.
Over they years, I have lived behind several red doors. Most were a deep crimson red but one was a bright blood red. Now that I think about it, no one came soliciting anything when I lived there. We didn't even get any trick or treaters at that house either!
I really wanna see a tardis now... That'd be so freaking cool. I love when you do these copper plating projects, plus they work so well with the stained glass too.
I used electrical tape for resin once it worked really well. It kept it from leaking and came off super easy. The only downside I remember is the resin had that frosted glass look where it was touching the glue from the tape. They make really wide rolls of electrical tape these days but I used one of normal rolls.
Blue painters tape is a heckuva lot easier to remove if you remove it before the resin is 100% fully cured, but it will leave a sticky residue behind (I personally just cover the residue with UV resin and call it done) I find for a resin that says 48 hour total cure, removing the tape at 24 hours works; when it basically feels hard but still has a touch of give
I gotta go through your old videos to consider types of tape for resin. Have some of those black wire frame style lampshades and I was going to put resin in the gaps via tape and doing one side at a time. I might do a thin initial coat of UV resin before pouring any epoxy, which could be good for some effects.
Wow it is amazing how much this project reminds me of 80's themed things. I know Peter is a product of the 80's (my parents are even older). But it's beautifully done! I love the color choices and the different patterns. You make different choices to what I would have done but thats the beauty of seeing other makers make things.
I love how this one turned out. Going for the red door was the right call. And I was surprised how little I could differentiate between the two shades of blue until a light source was put behind it. A beautiful project!
Pretty lantern, and another great video! I love how you show us the mishaps along the way, and how you deal with them. This was a super cool project. I admit, if I try any stained glass resin, I'll be using paint-I know my limits. XD I can see it being a good technique for small jewelry pieces, which need to be lightweight anyway.
Consider placing different knobs on each facing to give a better indication that these are representative of doors. If you had not said, I'd have thought they're stained glass windows. Maybe even some small address numbers on the door/copper section of places you've lived.
You can try sealing the inside edges with UV resin to avoid leaking. Put down the tape and then seal with the UV. Test it first because some UV resin can get hot and make the tape curl. I love the lantern. It is so pretty.
Looks fantastic Peter! Couple of suggestions for the next time if you’re interested. I would add a thin base layer of clear resin first. That way it will seal up all the panels and you won’t have to worry about color leakage when you add the color layer. Second and this is purely cosmetic, traditional stained glass uses more transparent colors than opaque color. So instead of mica powder you might try some resin dye instead. Definitely stick with the mica though if you love that look the most. Excellent work!!
This is absolutely stunning! The copper plating process looks so straightforward too! I don't know if I have anything to plate... but I might just have to find something... I don't know that it works great as a lamp sadly, I think it would be good to do a few panels of pigment tests to see how well they transmit light and keep their color. Might be a fun way to revisit the Dye Trying winners too!
Well done!! 2 thumbs up!!! Here is a suggestion. pour a thin layer of clear resin into a small tray and then lay the panels in. You then don't have to worry about leaks and it preserves the copper on the inside. You would only have to trim up the edges as far as post processing. A crazy notion is to drill a vertical hole on the corner and insert a 14GA solid copper wire as a hinge pin and then you have a swinging door that you can access the interior of the lantern and glue the top on. (On 3 sides)
It turned out really nice! I have an idea for the tape :) What about two silicone mats sandwiching the stained glass while it cures with some heavy weight on top to seal the edges with pressure?
Song lyrics that popped into my head at various times during this video: "I see a red door and i want to paint it black" "There's an old piano and they play it hot behind the green door "
Hi Peter, Love these copper plating projects 😀 Suggestion: Could you maybe use mold release somewhere in the process? On the tape before applying it perhaps (Not sure how it may effect the stickyness)
Honestly, it's stunning. Totally something I would buy. I do prefer however when it's the ones in non shimmer and more see-through, to me that looks and feels more like stained glass❤
Well done! You can also use spray adhesive on things and apply copper leaf which is dirt cheap. It in turn can be copper plated as well or left as is. It may help with some of the coverage issues when you don't have time to leave it in solution long enough.
You could use a resin printer and white resin to print the lettering for the Tardis, and embed it into the frame before you pour the blue. As someone already mentioned, a thin layer of clear first would ensure the lettering stays in place while you pour the surrounding resin. Maybe include a jig in the print that holds the letters in place but can be cut off once fixed in place, so it self aligns.
What about a thin layer of wax melted onto a baking sheet? Warm to set frames into, let harden to seal, do your pour, warm to dislodge frames. Similar idea to how pine rosin was once used.
check with your local stained glass shop. If you're wanting the green verdigris look, there is a patina treatment intended for copper plated stuff that you can get it there very quickly....
Gonna have to show Mrs WnW this as she had suggested I try a lantern with my laser also... I hadn't thought about the epoxy infill though. I wonder about trying it with two different coloured sheets of acrylic, so the positive space is one sheet and the negative is another. Great results, Peter! Too bad about the Tuck tape, but that stuff is SO STICKY, not sure what the person was thinking to suggest that.
I love it!! The tulip doors my fave, but i love them all & the 2 diff blues came out looking great with the light on inside. I really like the green patina (not sure of spelling?) it gives it a real antique-ie kinda vibe. Id absolutely use this in my house, would be great on a coffee table as a dim light at night to watch a movie by or would look fab on a mantelpiece in the winter with the fire going!
This is awesome! The adult coloring books have some really good stained glass pages . Someone else suggested a thin layer of clear resin and once that thin layer has cured remove the tape. It could be the resin gets too hot curing reaction with the adhesive on the tape making it ridiculous to remove.
Now that you have some more experience with the process, a Tardis themes project would be interesting to see. And I agree with the thin layer of clear resin instead of tape.
Mr Brown, thank you for this video. I also would like to bring your attention to colored acrylic and textured acrylic sheets both of which can be laser cut and laser etched. We used to laser etch and then use black paint to fill in the small score lines on the acrylic sheets to give us very intricate detail lines on flat materials. You can make the same effect as the lantern without all the cure time and time to copper plate. Good luck in future projects, may you have fewer critical failures along your way. Thank you for always inspiring.
Would spraying the tape with mold release help? For this you could build an outer frame for building the "tape wall", then spray and place your coated object on top.
Hey Peter quick question, could you possibly do the copper plating after you pour the resin? I wouldn't think the solution would bother the resin and the copper would then only stick where the conductive paint is exposed.
@@peterbrownwastaken Might be a fun test, I wouldn't think the copper sulphate would be much more harsh than just water as far as the resin is concerned. I would think if the plating could be done after the resin it would simplify the process of making these a great deal.

I need to get up I’ve just watched three or four of your videos back to back - wanting to watch another 😄 (UK and I’ve been watching for a couple of hours ..... it’s now 09:30!)
I really like how you go about creating things, very inspiring. I have not tried it, but it would be interesting to see if for this type of project, if you could use a transparent backing and just leave in place, like rice paper or a sheet of accertate?
When I was a kid (in the 80s), you could buy kits to make “stained glass” window decorations. It consisted of some metal (I guess steel) shape and coloured plastic beads. You put the metal shape on some flat surface covered in aluminium foil, filled the open parts with the plastic beads and then put it in the oven. The heat would make the beads melt and level and if you had put in the right quantity of beads you ended up with some fairly nice looking decoration. Too little beads and you’ld have small holes, too many abd it would overflow in the adjacent space. No idea if they still sell them...
I know they sold them as recently as the '90s, because I remember doing quite a few of them. All they seem to have nowadays are those paint ones, which aren't nearly as cool.
In my opinion putting a loop on the top like the old lanterns would be cool. That would be a neat like table piece or just hanging somewhere like outside to get more patina over time. Awesome work and I'm glad you tested the different methods and even showed the failures to help people understand what could happen. Thanks for all your hard work, looks amazing! And yes....I was shouting purple at the screen. :P
For getting the tape off, I've had good results in the past by warming the tape a bit with a hair dryer so it softens/loosens the glue enough to get it off. Not a heat gun, that gets too hot. You want to warm the glue, not scorch the tape/resin.

Your projects are always interesting, but this one is stellar.
i love your story telling, i follow you for a while now peter. thank you for sharing your experience with creativity :)
That red door is beautiful!
Maybe try clear transfer tape. The kind used crafters use for transferring vinyl to resin.
