My cousin has NEVER cut hair before and she followed this video on my hair and I LOVE it sooo much, it was so easy to follow and this is gonna be my go to haircut now. A tutorial on how to do it on yourself would be amazing
I'm a recent Cosmetology student graduate and didn't get to practice this hair cut a lot. Now with the help of this video I can practice till I've got it down. Thank you for posting this!
I just used this tutorial because my sister wanted me to cut her hair. I found this video very simple to follow and her hair came out great!!! It was the best hair cut I've given considering I'm no professional. Her hair looked so refreshed, more volumized and bouncy with this style! Thank you for sharing!!! This video has definitely made me 100x better at cutting hair this style!!!
I like to leave more weight around the bottom keeping the length, my clients are mainly latinas with thick long hair and they would kill me if I texturized that much lol
Really appreciate all the time and effort you must put in for these videos. They are super helpful and great to watch. Thanks Matt. (watching from Sydney, Australia!)
I’m able to cut my hair at home now I’m so glad this exists. Thank you 🙏🏼. I would struggle going to hair stylists that didn’t understand what cut I wanted. I’m not perfect at it but I’ve been learning more from watching your videos. Makes the simple make sense.
So I really want to take a minute to thank you for help us so so so much into keeping learning every day new triks and becoming some close as amazing as you are. And you share ALL the tips and tricks keeping anything to yourself, what an amazing person and professional... congratulations and keep the hard work going, I really admire you!! greetings from Argentina 😊😙
I'd just like to thank you so much for this video! I'm a newer stylist. I just started my first salon job a couple months ago and was having a really hard time with this haircut but you just made it so simple for me! And for that I thank you!
Why in the world can't anyone do this haircut?? I have asked about 20 people to do this and they all chopped it up. Am I supposed to use certain key words???
so true!!!! i dont wanna potentially mess up my hair by cutting it myself but every hairdresser either gives me a choppy u shaped cut or tells me that this doesnt look good on thick hair!!
My brother is a barber for male cuts and since salons aren’t open he used this as his guide my hair looks perfect!!! I have long wavy hair and I had a ugly straight cut and now it looks so good !!
This is literally THE haircut that I’ve wanted for a long time. But I have to wait for about a year and a half until my hair’s long enough to actually make the V shape look good. 😭 But when I do, I’m going to have the layers be just a tad bit shorter than what you showed, combined with curtain bangs and a caramel ombré. It’s gonna be (chef’s kiss) awesome! 🥰
Thanks for the video! Followed it myself at home and my hair turned out fabulous :) I really like the layering, my hair looks great when I straighten it
In school for Cosmo right now. I love watching your videos! My mom wants this cut. I'm just scared cuz it's kind of difficult to understand given I'm in school still learning.
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I went to Sam Villa's site to look for the same thing, but the closest was a v cut that didn't really have any LAYERING per se, but just started short in the front and moved away from the face into a v in the back. I was about to give up and just do that haircut, but when I searched Google for it I saw this video and was like "Yeah! That one!" I'm watching this channel from now on, since I also like your style and how you put your videos together way better. Thanks! :)
When I was younger, the v-shaped style was never a problem. But in the last 10 years, I've had to argue with stylists for them to agree to even try to do this, only to end up with some rounded cut anyway. Thought I was losing my mind or not communicating right but now I see it's a common (though mysterious) problem. Maybe it's too much work for them or some trick to get you to come back sooner.
It's cuz the longest layer ends up being very thin, making it look like you only have 5 hairs at the bottom. It's just not a modern look. Some variation is still used, but it's just not a deep V anymore.
Dune137 if you don’t want your front short enough the back length will round so it also depends on how much length is in the back... so for instance if it goes to two inches below your neck in the back yoûd need a very short bang and it still wouldn’t work
Thank you. I like your videos. They are straight to the point. I am a hairstylist with 18 y. of experience. But still its nice to see other stylists work.
I'm cutting my daughters hair right now using this video as a guide line!!! I will post pictures when it is complete!!!!!! You are awesome at what you do...
Thank you!!! I was dreading someone asking for this cut! It's my least favorite shape, because I find it unflattering, but your execution is stellar. Thanks for teaching us!!!
Awesome, as always. This exact haircut was born by a certain Japanese pop star in the 80s-90s, and it was really popular. I love the light, wispy ends.
I've been DYING for a cut like this!!! but every salon I go to never does it that way and I don't like the way It looks lol ugh I haven't cut my hair in what it feels like years!!! I'm so scared lol
I thought I commented on this. I did this awhile ago to myself..maybe February. It came out beautiful. Exactly like it's shown. I do have fine, thin hair. Only problem was I couldn't go in and shape it better. Like he does at very end. But all in all great cut, great directions and I love that he puts the diagrams in. I also used one of his cuts for my brother and friend. Always on point!! 💜💜💜 Thx
I love doing the V shaped. My teachers make us call it a diagonal back increased layer. I love the increased layers and the uniform layers. I still have problems with the graduated cuts, not sure why.
I've been looking for a way to explain what I want to my stylist...this is perfect! After four years of unbecoming round bottomed haircuts, I finally feel like there might be a light at the end of the tunnel!
classes! all of you should hold a class. I'm sure you'd have a huge outcome. ( yes, these are technically an online class, but to have someone showing you exactly what your doing wrong, even if it's something so small, can make a huge difference in the overall shape. just food for thought, ...once again...:)
Again....❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!!! This is pretty much how my stylist does my hair with layers, a few razored spots, cuts into the ends like you did when holding the hair up, and I get that perfect V shape. EXCELLENT hair cut! Only difference between me and the mannequin is my hair is more coarse, thicker, and somewhat wavy which makes a perfect V cut for me!! Again....BEAUTIFUL 💇 💕👍!!!!!!!!!!
This was nice , simple and easy techniques of cutting a V shape layered hair . Thank you for sharing it . Hope you also have a video of cutting U shape.
@Free Salon Education How long is the mannequin's hair before you cut it? I'm getting my hair cut like this soon by I want to know how much length to add in order for it to be that long. Thanks!!
Question, if they want a SPECIFIC length in the back, how do you determine how much to cut since you start in the front? My guess would be to pull from the back section (longest point) and bring it forward to the front section and measure it then that'll determine how much to cut from the front? Thanks!!
For steps one and two, did you pull all the hair in the back to the front to cut it as well or did you leave some of it untouched and long? I can’t really tell
Omg I did this cut on my now deceased daughter 10 years ago with a razor because she had natural translucent blonde level 10. The only difference was I left a triangle shape in her nape to keep her thickness and it was the only cut she ever wanted me to recreate and I couldn’t. Thank you so much for sharing.😂
Wonderful demonstration and tutorial! Excellent video! Thank you for all of the tips and detailed explanations for each step. I really appreciate your artistic talent and that you kindly demonstrate and educate. Wishing you all the best! Sincerely, Mary Bass
Hi Matt first of all thanks you for share you knowledge with us, my question is the doll heads are 100% human hair???? Because i need them to do Updo's and idk if they are resistant to heat.
Ok, I am NOT a hairdresser, however, you showed me the exact style that I ever wanted for long hair! Thank you!!!!!
I just did this on my own hair and I have never been happier about a cut not even ones I’ve gotten done professionally! I love it

Omg!! I want this haircut so bad. It's everything I ever wanted.
Eta L me too👸😍
I like to leave more weight around the bottom keeping the length, my clients are mainly latinas with thick long hair and they would kill me if I texturized that much lol
omg thanks for this number one most requested cut at Latino salons
Kenny Munoz for real. capas con el pico lol
Kenny Munoz Yeah our hair tends to be so thick that we want a haircut that takes out some of that weight and this one does just that!
Kenny Munoz
Yup lol, this is what I request every time I go
Si jaja
Hola Kenny! Será este el degrafilado? Ese me encanta!!
Hey Matt, so many girls coming in for this hair cut, thanks so much for getting around to this one. As always, luv your work!😜
Really appreciate all the time and effort you must put in for these videos. They are super helpful and great to watch. Thanks Matt. (watching from Sydney, Australia!)

Awesome. Never stop learning :)
You are by far, the best stylist I've ever seen. My goal as a new stylist is now to some day be on your level of cutting! This is amazing!
Wow!!! Can I do this to my own hair all by myself? I think this is the best I’ve seen here.
Did u do it?
Yes thank you so much! Here lately I've had a lot of clients requesting this damn haircut and I'm like 😳
My brother is a barber for male cuts and since salons aren’t open he used this as his guide my hair looks perfect!!! I have long wavy hair and I had a ugly straight cut and now it looks so good !!

i need you to cut my hair. for some reason, no one knows how to do this!
Samantha O most stylists know how to do this- they just don’t want to because it’s not modern
When I was younger, the v-shaped style was never a problem. But in the last 10 years, I've had to argue with stylists for them to agree to even try to do this, only to end up with some rounded cut anyway. We all know how to do this... maybe yoûre asking for it wrong
Dune137 if you don’t want your front short enough the back length will round so it also depends on how much length is in the back... so for instance if it goes to two inches below your neck in the back yoûd need a very short bang and it still wouldn’t work
Wow....you are the one of the few persons on RUclips who really explains a haircut....! I wish you would cut my hair !
Thank you. I like your videos. They are straight to the point. I am a hairstylist with 18 y. of experience. But still its nice to see other stylists work.

How did it go?
You explain everything sooo well thank you.. I had to drop out of school for a little while due to health reasons but I want to keep learning
Thank you!!! I was dreading someone asking for this cut! It's my least favorite shape, because I find it unflattering, but your execution is stellar. Thanks for teaching us!!!
thanks you! as a redken based cosmo student I found this video so helpful!
Awesome, as always. This exact haircut was born by a certain Japanese pop star in the 80s-90s, and it was really popular. I love the light, wispy ends.

Quick question. If this is how I want my hair done what do I tell my stylist? Or should I just show them the video, when I go?
Again....❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!!! This is pretty much how my stylist does my hair with layers, a few razored spots, cuts into the ends like you did when holding the hair up, and I get that perfect V shape. EXCELLENT hair cut! You are why I have a full book at work!!! Thank you!,
I love this haircut for me I like the look of the point being more rounded. but this one came out great!!
Omg this is amazing, we need more hairstylists like you!!
@Free Salon Education How long is the mannequin's hair before you cut it? I'm getting my hair cut like this soon by I want to know how much length to add in order for it to be that long. Thanks!!
Love this. I get asked about V-Shape haircuts soooo much.
my go to haircut. I love it. Hopefully I can get this done with a hairstylist on Tuesday🙏🏼😄
The head diagrams are very helpful! Love your videos! Thank you.
Love it. Im wondering if i could cut my own hair cuz it long and thick
Love the cut, love Matt. Your generosity is amazing. Thank you.
How did you connect the top section to the rest of the hair? Did you use the shorter section of the front as a guide to the first top layers?
Question, if they want a SPECIFIC length in the back, how do you determine how much to cut since you start in the front? My guess would be to pull from the back section (longest point) and bring it forward to the front section and measure it then that'll determine how much to cut from the front? Thanks!!
Loved the video keep them comming! I like the way you teach! Much appreciated! can't wait to learn more.
I love this way to cut V... Exactly same way I cutted my daughters hair while ago and added bit layers..
P.s. Great video
On that top section, are you point cutting or notching? The part where you said you wanted to create volume. I didn't catch that.
Hey Matt, thanks for this, I totally needed it. I will try and see if it works for me. I would like to see a Razor haircut and a short layered.
Do you ever show how you blend extensions
I love all your hair cut👍 Matt, you are amazing 😉
Another Amazing Video from This Amazing Dude. Bravo.
Ahh I think this would look so nice paired with my front cowlick!! Love your vids man, you are very concise 💕
How would you explain this to a random hairdresser? This is exactly what I want but for my slightly shorter hair.
For steps one and two, did you pull all the hair in the back to the front to cut it as well or did you leave some of it untouched and long? I can’t really tell
Thanks so much!! It was very easy to follow your instructions, and the cut turned out super fabulous!!
I'm so sorry to hear that, sending prayers ❤️
This is exactly what I've been looking for! Can't wait to try this on my client. Thank you
Love it can we do this to hair to add extensions
Love the haircut 😊😊!!
Very nice! Clean sections and very easy to follow.
Thank you for sharing!
Awesome cutting tutorial as always. Can you please do a video on blind spots Jamie Alexander's haircut?
would you recommend this to someone with a lot of hair and thick?
Excellent job Matt
Thank you soooo so much. Total DIY kinda gal and this turned out great!!
This is amazing Matt!
Is there a way to create an initial guide to make sure I don't cut the front too short?
wow, thanks for sharing, so generous of you....helpful for me as i usually trim my own hair...
What hair spray do you use kindly mention it thank you
Wonderful demonstration and tutorial! Excellent video! Thank you for all of the tips and detailed explanations for each step. I really appreciate your artistic talent and that you kindly demonstrate and educate. Wishing you all the best! Sincerely, Mary Bass
I love the v shape haircut, that's the only shape i do in my hair.. Very informative video i will definitely be trying this the next time i do my hair
Hi Matt first of all thanks you for share you knowledge with us, my question is the doll heads are 100% human hair????
